EDITOR’S NOTE
Hello Moto Rider World fans. I’ve just
finished watching the opening round of
the 2021 WSBK championship at Aragon
in Spain and what a weekend for Steven
Odendaal who picked up not only his first
podium in the World Supersport class, but
his first win and then went and backed it up
by doing the double.
There is no doubt that Steven got himself in
the best team for this season and is well set
up to go for the world title and if he carries
on like that we will have another SA rider
being crowned world champion.
It was a great weekend for all SA riders’
racing in championships around the world.
Mathew Scholtz picked up 2 more podium
finishes in the MotoAmerica SBK class with
Cam Petersen grabbing a solid 5th in race
1 and 7th in race 2. We have a full round-up
of that action in this issue in the Dunlop
Racing Pages section.
Dino Iozzo, racing over in the German
Supersport championship picked up a 3rd
place finish, while Dorren Loureiro scored
some solid points in the World Supersport
300 class. Another young star, Sam Lochoff,
picked up 7th and 5th respectively in the
MotoAmerica Supersport class.
Brilliant stuff and in next months issue we
will have a full round-up of all the SA riders’
racing abroad and in what championships.
These guys are true heroes pursuing their
dreams despite no support from SA, other
than the fans.
Staying with racing and we feature round
3 of the WOM Racing Series from East
London in this issue including a feature on
our own Ducati/Hustle Energy Drink team.
Finding sponsors and funds to go racing
these days is not easy, but we are lucky to
have some support that allows both me and
my brother to go racing. The new series is
growing by the day and it was great to see
over 100 bikes at the East London round.
As I type this we are only 2 weeks away
from round 3 at RSR, I am both very excited
and very scared as there are some seriously
fast riders’ around the Delams based track.
Taking a look at this MONSTEROUS issue
and we have so many great exclusives
featured - a first test ride on the new BMW
M1000RR, Kawasaki’s ZX10R and Triumph’s
Speed Triple 1200 RS. You won’t read about
these bikes anywhere else in SA, so enjoy!
We also have a great feature where we
take my little big brother, a MotoGP star
in the form of Brad Binder, and let them
loose around RSR on RAD KTM’s demo
1290 SD R and 890 Duke R. Very much a
big vs small feature...
I also test Triumph’s new Trident 660
machine for the first time right here in SA
and tell you all about my Ducati Mystery
Ride 2 experience where I literally went cliff
diving. Sad but true...
Then, when you have done reading the over
200 pages that is MRW, we have issue 2
of The Dirty Side of MRW for all you dirty
bastards to enjoy. Well worth R500 for 12
issues I would say, hey?
On that subject, I ask you to please
continue spreading the word of MRW as
far and wide as possible. It’s tough times
out there at the moment for all but the SA
motorcycle market is taking big strain. We
as MRW will continue to bring you all the
exclusive features, tests, rider interviews
and Talking MotoGP, but, unfortunately, like
everything these days, we need money to
continue doing this so I beg you to tell your
mates about MRW and please make sure
you support all the advertisers you see in
this issue and on our social pages. They
are the ones backing us and making all this
possible, so please, take note and support!!!
I hope you enjoy this latest issue. I’m sure it
will keep you occupied for a while with over
260 pages to enjoy. Until then, stay safe.
Suzuki’s New
GSX-S1000
The New Suzuki GSX-S1000
Is More Aggressive and
More High Tech Than Ever
Suzuki has decided to finally spoil us
with a redesigned GSX-S1000 model.
Launched on April 26th, the 2021 naked
is tuned for the street with an increased
engine power output and new tech, all
wrapped in a renewed aggressive look.
It certainly does live by the name of
“The Beauty of Naked Aggression.”
Its upgraded face is characterized
by the newly developed, vertically
stacked pair of mono-focus type LED
headlights, which give it its sharp look.
There is also a new rear LED light,
flanked by LED indicators.
The twin-spar aluminum chassis
remains the same as the previous
model. What’s new is the handlebar
that’s 23 mm wider and 20 mm closer
to the rider to improve comfort without
compromising handling.
The suspension is provided by
fully adjustable KYB front forks and
a preload and rebound damping
adjustable rear shock, all with
revamped settings from the previous
version. Its front 310 mm discs are
fitted with Brembo monobloc calipers.
The 999 cm3 four-cylinder engine
has been retained, but it got some
work done, thus achieving compliance
with the demanding Euro 5 standard.
According to the Japanese brand, the

Yamaha brings
back R7 - but in a
diffrent way
Yamaha’s brand new, streetfriendly
2022 R7 is a far cry from
the original laser-focused race
homologation bike that first wore
the R7 nameplate in 1999 – but
this looks like a brilliant sporty
option for new riders.
You knew it was coming... Yamaha has
stuck its peppy 689cc CP2 parallel twin
engine into a supersport chassis that looks
like a proper racebike, but will be much more
approachable and accessible for road riders.
The problem is, they called it the R7.
The original R7, also known as the
OW-02, was a thoroughbred racebike,
a homologation special produced in the
minimum possible numbers to allow it to
run in the 1999 World Superbike series. It
had the best of everything, from its top-spec
Ohlins suspension to its titanium valves and
conrods, and just 500 were sold worldwide at
a stratospheric price around US$32,000 – on
top of which racers had to spend thousands
more to de-restrict its engine and make the
thing competitive on track. It remains one of
the most exotic and hallowed machines you
can trot out in a modern-era collection.

MotoGP inspired
Ducati Hypermotard
It seems to have been a busy last few
weeks for motorcycle makers, as a
number of them have released versions
of some of their most sought-after
products revised for the 2022 model
year. The latest name to join the party is
Ducati, which has just announced some
changes for the Hypermotard line.
These changes are not all that extensive. First of
all, the family continues to have three members,
namely the 950, 950 RVE, and 950 SP. All
continue to be powered by the same 937cc Ducati
Testastretta 11° twin-cylinder engine as before,
rated at 114 hp. All three models in the range
now comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard,
without that change taking its toll on output levels.
The difference is how the engine is worked
through a revised gearbox that allows for easier
shifts to neutral when the bikes are standing still.
Ducati says the solution chosen for the gearbox
is the same one already deployed on the Monster
and SuperSport 950.
Just one member of the small family received
a more comprehensive upgrade. Already at
the head of the Hypermotard table, the SP is
now gifted with a special livery meant to be

MV Agusta update
the Rush 1000
Looking it it leapt off the page of a
Japanese manga, the 2021 MV Agusta
Rush 1000 will be available in a limited
production run on just 300 units. Styling
on the Rush follows a very militaryindustrial
look favoured by Japanese
illustrators like Masamune Shirow and
Yoshihisa Tagami, with MV Agusta’s
newest naked sports sporting an almost
brutal styling ethos.
MV Agusta introduced the Rush 1000 to fanfare
in 2020. The limited-edition model leveraged
the same 998cc inline-four and tubular trellis
frame found in the brand’s Brutale 1000RR,
but added refined touches such as a round
LED headlight, trimmed tail section, and rear
disc wheel. MV Agusta limited the exclusive
hypernaked to 300 units, and the Rush 1000 is
back for round two in 2021.
Rocking the same liquid-cooled, DOHC, inlinefour,
the 2021 Rush 1000 is still good for 208
horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 85.9 lb-ft at
11,000 rpm. However, MV introduces new
camshaft timing to increase torque in the
low-end and mid-range. The addition of DLCcoated
valve guides also reduces friction and
improves reliability. To help the power get to
the back wheel, the engineers strengthened
the 6-speed transmission. The revised
quickshifter also contributes to the more
precise gear changes, thanks in part to a new
shift sensor.
MV leaves the Chromoly trellis frame
intact, but recalibrates the fully-adjustable
Ohlins suspension for improved handling and
response. The braking system also reinforces
the Rush 1000’s pedigree, consisting of
Brembo Sylema calipers, twin 320mm discs,
and steel-braided lines up front. The rear
benefits from a single 220mm rotor and twopot
binder. While MV tactfully tweaks the
hypernaked’s hardware, the software update
may represent the biggest difference.

When you feel the need to breathe, you will often find
yourself reaching for your helmet. And when you want
to know where you are really going, you may well set off
with no real destination. Travelling is always a cure-all.
It clears the mind and lightens the spirit. And to travel
with the Multistrada V4 is even more enjoyable because
it takes you to another dimension, a dream world in
which anything is possible.
In distancing yourself from everyone and everything,
you have the space to focus on your thoughts. Or
perhaps you push on towards unexplored places,
broadening your outlook and homing in on the true
essence of things. With its all-in-one character, the
fourth generation of Multstrada is now more advanced
SuperSport 950
Pure
Ducati
DNA
With its single-sided swingarm,
trellis frame affixed to the engine,
hydraulic clutch, adjustable
suspension and Pirelli Diablo
Rosso III tyres, the genetic code
of the SuperSport 950 is that of a
real Ducati sport bike.
The road-going Ducati sports
bike gets a name change and
becomes SuperSport 950, while
also updating its aesthetics,
electronics package, and
extensive range of equipment.
YOUR
WAY TO
SPORT
The new full-LED headlight and
side air vents are reminiscent of
the sharp look and profile of the
Panigale V4, but it is with its new
fairings that the SuperSport 950
really shows off its new, more
sports-oriented nature. With the
elegant hot air vents, for example,
similar to the double extractor
of Panigale V4 models, and the
lower fairing, which now extends
as far as the lateral silencer,
concealing the mechanics and
giving it the look of a real race
bike. The fairings are connected
to the sculpted tank with
muscular ‘shoulders’ that envelop
the trellis frame, while the front
sections are integrated with
the headlight thanks to a pair
of winglets that direct fresh air
towards two side vents to improve
the rider’s thermal comfort.
And speaking of comfort… With
the new SuperSport 950, great
attention is paid to the ergonomic
triangle, aerodynamic protection
and the rider’s freedom of
movement. This results in more
comfortable every-day riding and
more enjoyable sports riding.
The crème de la crème of road-legal BMW sportsbikes gets a
“M stands for power”, say the BMW marketeers. It’s true too, look
at the M cars. They been offering sack-fulls more than their non-M
equivalents ever since the M1 debuted back in the late 70’s. A quick
glance at the BMW car website and there are currently 12 M models
listed. How many on the ‘Motorrad’ or ‘motorcycle’ website? One. This
one. The new one. The M 1000 RR. And what a looker it is. Decadent
in the customary M sport colour scheme and based heavily on the S
1000 RR which his hardly outdated or slow but that 2019 model hasn’t
quite cut the mustard in the racing world and that’s hurt the German
marque’s pride. It’s been too long since fortune favoured them on the
racetrack, well away from the TT and with a certain Mr Hickman at the
helm anyway, so now is the time for the sleeves to be rolled up and a
homologation special to be the way forward.
Designed to meet FIM World Superbike and Superstock regulations,
the new M is built around the S 1000 RR and revisions to its 999cc
Triumph’s new Speed Triple get’s more speed,
more triple, and, well, more awesomeness.
Words by Adam Child ‘Chad’ | Pics by Kingdom create/Chippy Wood
When a manufacturer launches a new model, it’s normally a
slight improvement over the existing model. Power may be up a
fraction, weight down perhaps one or two kilos, suspension lightly
tweaked, with 3% more frame flex… But Triumph has smashed
that tradition out of the park and, in the process, has produced
something mighty impressive.
The new Speed Triple 1200 RS has a 26% improved power-toweight
ratio over the now old 1050 model. That is exceptional.
Here are some more headline-grabbing figures. Peak power from
the new 1160cc triple is up 29.5bhp to 177.5bhp. Peak torque is up
8Nm to 125Nm, and now the engine spins another 650rpm higher.
Weight is sliced by a claimed 10kg from the previous model,
making that power-to-weight figure twice as good as that of the
original 1994 model, remember that one?. And, as you may have
guessed by now, the 1200 RS is the fastest, most powerful triplepowered
Triumph have ever produced.

Last year’s Ducati Mystery Ride was such a hit that people begged
Jos from Ducati SA to host another one, and that’s exactly what he
did. But, would he be able to make it anywhere near as good as the
first one? Over 45 bikes and 60 people in total were about to find
out as we joined in for the Ducati Mystery Ride 2.
Just as with the first one we all met at sparrows fart at the World
of Motorcycles dealership in Centurion for some coffee and a snack
before heading off. Where were we going? No idea, all we had to
do was follow the only man on the trip who knew, Mr Jos himself.

Mitchell Boyes lives with BMW’s new F900XR for
a week in beautiful Cape Town.
Words by Mitchell Boyes | Pics Kristen Tubb (Precious Event Imagery)
Earlier this month I had the chance to ride the BMW F900XR.
Not only did I get to ride it, I got to keep it, but only for a
week… The reason I wanted to ride this bike was to see what
all the hype was about. Now at this point, you’re probably
thinking “but you guys tested this last year” Well, you wouldn’t
be wrong, but this isn’t the same type of test. This test aimed
to see what the F900XR was like to own, so for the 7 days I
had the bike, that was my transport unless I absolutely had no
choice but to take the car.
The specific model I was given was the sport style edition
in racing red which means it has a sport-style screen and
gold forks. And while it does look very similar to the other
two models the sporty screen just makes me like this model a
touch more.
My first encounter with the XR was when I picked it up (not
off of the ground but at the warehouse). When I threw my
leg over, I immediately felt comfortable. The seated position
feels very ergonomic. When you sit on the XR you sit in the
bike and it feels as though the bodywork wraps itself around
you. I had heard from some people that the clutch on the XR
was difficult to use and not very friendly to new riders, I must
however disagree. I found the clutch on the XR to be one of
the easiest clutches I’ve ever used.

I am certain opinions on the bike’s aesthetics won’t bother Jonathan
to August 2019 and briefly earlier, when at the age of 33, I
decided I want to take up riding bikes.
I have always loved bikes, fast superbike type machines.
Growing up next to Zwartkops raceway, first as a track
marshal and later starting my career as a paramedic, I
had seen enough big names and machines to utterly
fall in love with the speed, sound, emotion, danger and
excitement of these machines. I spent weekends at World
superbike events, the last MotoGP event in South Africa in
2004, and of course, what I see as the heyday of national
superbike racing in the early 2000s.

Raceway track out in Delmas, and when I say big
vs small, I am not only talking about the bikes. We
invited along a certain Mr Brad Binder to come
and put these two beasts to the test. So that’s
the small rider sorted but where would we find a
bigger rider? Yes, not to worry as I would step in
for the big boys and see what I could do against
the best of the best and on the best of the best.
We have been very lucky to ride both the
have never ridden them on the same day, for

CHATTING TO
THE CHAMP
J O N A T H A N R E A
The day before the start of the 2021 World SBK
season, we sat down for an exclusive interview with
the 6-times superbike champion.
Words by Mitchell Boyes | Pics www.jonathan-rea.com
Last year after Jonathan Rea won his sixth championship
in a row, I wrote an article about his success. Recently I got
the opportunity to have chat with 6-time World Superbike
Champion ahead of the start of the 2021 season opener in
Aragon. Although I didn’t have much time to speak to him, I
tried to ask as many questions as I could.
Jonathan had a very successful winter testing program and
ended up showing just how fast the new ZX-10RR is. I asked
Rea how he felt going into Aragon as it’s a track he has gone
well at in the past. It is also however a track where the top
speed advantage of the Ducati’s plays a big role.
Johnny replied saying that he is feeling confident going
into the season as they have a stronger engine and a better
aerodynamic package this year, so they’ve made a step. He said
they’ve also made small changes to the electronics and the
chassis. He ended off his answer by saying that he is ready and
excited to get the season going.

WHEELIE
GOOD RACING
Round 2 of the new WOM Racing Series headed to
the fastest track in the land down in East London
and as usual the racing action was “Wheelie”
good in all classes with riders’ fighting to keep the
front wheel on the ground on the bumpy road
circuit with the extra 17% costal power.
Words by Robert Portman | Pics by Beam Productions
Just over 100 bikes entered for round 2 of the
WOM Racing Series, with most coming from out
of town but there was a great turn out from the
local riders who always love showing how fast
one can go around the East London circuit.
For those who don’t know, the East London
track is actually a public main road used by
locals everyday. When racing happens, the road
is closed off. This means track conditions always
vary and on the Friday practice this was very
much the case.
Having said that, a big pat on the back
must go out to all at Border Motorsport for
maintaining the track and keeping it alive. Ten
years ago I thought the historic track would be
gone and replaced by housing, but thanks to the
never ending pursuit by the local racing fanatics
they’ve managed to keep the track going
despite no support from the local municipality.
Overall the racing weekend was brilliant - great
racing action in all classes with riders’ loving the
challenge that is the fastest track in the land.
Speeds over close on 290kph were reached
by some riders’ down the 1km long front
straight and those lucky enough to watch the
action through Potters Pass and Rifle Range
witnessed knee down at 220kph plus. They
would have also witnessed the biggest incident
of the weekend involving two local stars in the
combined SBK1000 and Supersport 600 race.
There was a coming together between Wade
Wright and Chris Webster through Rifle Range
- that’s flat out at 230kph plus on a Yamaha
R6 Supersport machine. Wade managed to
keep his bike upright but Chris lost control and
crashed in a big way. Luckily the rider made it to
the hospital and was awake.
There were a few crashes of the two days with
most walking away with no injuries while some
were not so lucky and will be spending the next
few weeks recovering.
It was great to see over 100 bikes enter and
support the series in these tough times. All
riders were treated to safe, fun racing and that’s
what the series is all about.
You will see I’ve used a big main pic of the
Classics riders’ and some of their machines. I
did this to say thank you to them. Again, they
come out in numbers, 23 this time out to be
exact, and show their support and put on great
racing action on their classic bikes. Without their
support, putting on a motorcycle only series
like this would not be possible, so from me, and
everyone involved with the series we say thank
you so much!
We here at MRW are very proud to be the
official media partner to the series and over the
next 10 pages have some amazing pictures from
the team from Beam Productions showing off
the racing action. Enjoy!

BACK WITH A
BANG!
Former SA SBK champion Michael White is back
and racing with the Aprilia brand who also
makes a welcomed return to SA racing.
Words by Robert Portman | Pics by Beam Productions
Magic Mike, as he is known, is back on track
having been out of SA superbike racing for a
few years now. The former SA SBK champion
has teamed up with the Aprilia brand here
in SA racing in the BOTTS class in the WOM
Racing Series. Ducati has dominated/owned
the BOTTS class for years now but Aprilia SA
are determined to upset the apple cart and with
Magic Mike in the saddle they are set to do so.
So far, after 2 rounds of racing, Mike and his
Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory have taken a clean
sweep - 4 out 4 wins and pole positions.
Mike has managed this on what is basically a
stock motorcycle. His aim with the racing season
was not only to try to put himself and the Aprilia
back on top spot but also highlight that one
does not have to throw millions at a race bike to
make it competitive. Plus, the fact that he does
not have millions to throw at his racebike.
Modern-day bikes are more than good
enough to go racing as is and Mike and Aprilia
are proving just that. Rob and his Ducati are
also proving this point, read more on that after
this feature.
Mike has taken a stock, off the showroom
floor Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory model and
gone to round one of the WOM Racing Series at
Phakisa and won both races there - headlights,
hooter and all.

It was a bittersweet outing for our race team at the
recent WOM Racing Series event down in East London.
Words by Robert Portman | Pics by Beam Productions
As most of you might already know, my brother and I are racing
in the WOM Racing Series for 2021. I am competing in the
BOTTS class while my brother has the tough task of racing in the
Superbike category.
Ducati SA and World of Motorcycles supplied us with a
gorgeous 2017 Ducati Panigale 1299 S for the racing season. We
would be sharing the bike in both classes, on the same day, so
plenty for the bike and tyres to handle.
While we are very, very lucky, this did mean we had to go out
and find some money to pay for all the tyres, entry fees, brake
pads etc needed for the racing season ahead. Luckily, apart from
all the support we get from Ducati SA, NPL came onboard as a

8 HOUR
Racing small bikes around the short track at Redstar
Raceway for 8 hours - now that sounds like fun!
ENDURANCE
Words by Shaun Portman | Pics Beam Productions
The very stylish Daniella Kerby
from BEAM Productions.
Lady rider Nicole
first time out on a
150 machine with
the King Price
Xtreme team.
Redstar Raceway came up with the brilliant
idea of hosting an 8hr Endurance race. This time
it wouldn’t be on 600 or 1000cc superbikes
but rather on bikes 400cc or less, with no
motards allowed and 500cc twins allowed.
(Like Honda’s CBR500R). There would also be
lap time restrictions in each class which would
allow absolute novice riders to race along with
the likes of Clinton Seller who was there in full
force, running a two-bike team in the King Price
Extreme colours. So basically how it would
work was that there would be 4, 30-minute
groups so each team needed to have 4 riders.
A group would be the fastest with no restriction
on lap times. B group would have restrictions
of no faster than a 58sec lap time. C group, you
couldn’t go quicker than a 1.05 and D group
not quicker than a 1.15. If you broke out of your
restricted time it would cost your team a 2 lap
penalty which was deducted from your team’s
total laps completed at the end of the race.
These kinds of races are generally won in
the C and D classes rather than A and B due to
penalties. And this race was no different. I was
invited to replace my brother riding for Team
Master Class onboard a Kawasaki 250 Ninja,
consisting of myself as the A rider, Joao Cruz
in B, Wayne Morgan in C and finally Stephen
Galgoczy in D. I recently also purchased a stock
CBR150 race bike and thought it would be a
good idea to enter a team with Lekka Racing
Shop kindly sponsoring a set of Dunlop Moto3
Slick tyres. Their name would be Team Limitless
and would consist of A rider Kyran De Lange,
Adriaan Van Dalen in B, Michael Powell in C and
an absolute novice in D, Daniella Kerby who with
Gerrit Erasmas would be pulling double duties
for the day. They would be riding and taking
photo’s out on track during the day so a huge
round of applause must go out to them.
There would also be a full lady team consisting
of four riders who have never raced before
onboard a Honda CBR250R sponsored by Honda
South Africa. A total of 13 teams entered the race
which would be split up into 3 classes. A 150cc,
250cc and 300 and above class.
As most of you all know I love riding small
bikes. They are just so easy to ride and help
hone your skills on bigger bikes. You are pretty
much flat out all of the time. They use hardly
any fuel and a set of tyres will easily last the 8hrs
and some as we proved on the day.
After a successful Friday practice for our
team, the bike was taken home by Joao for
some last-minute prep work before the race
the next day. Come race day and qualifying

LIGHTS UP VIR
Round 2 of the MotoAmerica championship headed to the
Virginia Raceway in scorching hot conditions and our SA
boys shone bright once again. By Paul Carruthers
Jake Gagne turned in a very Cameron
Beaubier-esque performance in the first
of two MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike
races at VIRginia International Raceway,
the Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance
Yamaha rider leading from start to finish
to earn his second win of the season and
his second in a row.
Gagne, who broke five-time
MotoAmerica Superbike Champion
Beaubier’s lap record earlier in the day
during final qualifying, shot from pole
position to the lead and was never
headed, topping Westby Racing’s
Mathew Scholtz by 11.8 seconds.
“Everybody likes to get a win every
now and again,” Gagne said. “I’m just
thankful for the Fresh N’ Lean Attack
Performance team. Having a year under
you on the same bike with the same
team coming back the next year, I just
feel really comfortable. I worked a lot
in the off-season on my riding and my
thought process when I’m out there.
Like I said, hats off to my team because
these guys work so hard. They were up
late swapping another motor last night.
It seemed like one thing after another,
but to make it and pull it off here today
is awesome. Obviously, I wanted to get
off to a good start. I’ve been struggling
with my starts and I think that was one
of my better starts. I was surprised that
I didn’t see Mat (Scholtz) or Loris (Baz)
or Josh (Herrin) or somebody come up
the inside. I just wanted to get out front
and try to throw down consistent laps. I
knew this would be a long, hard race on
these tyres. These Dunlops are holding
up well for how hot it is out there. Hats
off to the team. Hats off to all these boys
again. We’ve got a Yamaha and a sweep

With the 2022 EXC line-up, KTM reconfirms
its status as the provider of the most
comprehensive and exciting set of offroad
bikes on the market. Whether riders are
searching for a peerless motorcycle to
ace any terrain or equipment to find those
think anything but ‘orange’. The key to this
bar-setting versatility is the high standards
and the quality that is injected through the
Across the new line-up there are two key
upgrades to boost performance. All new
models receive updated WP suspension
settings aimed at offering a firmer and even
more planted feel while riding across the
gnarliest terrain. The second key upgrade is
the addition of new MAXXIS MaxxEnduro
tyres. After extensive testing, the new tyre
combo showed improved durability and
puncture-resistance and will provide even
comfort for extended hours across a myriad
of surfaces.
Innovative Transfer Port Injection (TPI)
engineering means KTM EXC 2-Strokes are
perfectly meeting the increased demands of
the modern offroad rider. The three motor
capacities guarantee the best choice of
horsepower and torque capabilities to suit
the rider’s preferences. With the KTM 300
any Hard Enduro ambition, it is the 2022 KTM
FLYING HIGH
SIX QUESTIONS WITH COOPER WEBB ABOUT ANOTHER
SUPERLATIVE SUPERCROSS SEASON.
Words by Adam Wheeler (KTM Blog) Pics by ktm images
2021 AMA Supercross has been typically tight
around the seven venues of the series and
in the points standings where Red Bull KTM
Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb has again
clasped his hands on the red plate. We spoke
with the 450SX championship leader as the
clock ticked down on the 17-round campaign.
25-year-old Cooper Webb hasn’t always been
the strongest in the practice or Heat races of a
2021 AMA Supercross meeting…but the KTM
450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION athlete warms
up considerably when the pyrotechnics begin
to fire right before the Main Event gatedrop.
Competitive starts and ruthless stalking of high
calibre rivals like Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac have
been familiar sights.
Webb opened his first term with the team
in the best possible way with the 2019 AMA
450SX championship: the second winner after
Ryan Dungey and the fourth title in five years for
the Murrieta-based crew. Illness, and struggling
from a hefty crash at the start of 2020 still didn’t
stop a run of 10 podiums from 11 finishes to be
runner-up.
Houston ‘1’ on January 16th 2021 delivered
an underwhelming 9th position but Webb
then charged to seize the red plate before
the decisive three-week run-in to the Atlanta
Speedway and Salt Lake City finale.
A hungry, fearless and competitive animal,
Webb nevertheless cracks a boyish grin when
talking about his profession and his progression.
True to cliché his pleasant demeanour is at odds
with the roaming presence he carries on the
stadium dirt, particularly through the whoops
section, which has been a particular zone of his
improvement for ‘21.
Regardless of how the final frantic laps of the
season turn out Webb has again shown that
he is not only a leader for KTM in the second
highest profile motorcycle racing series in the
world but also one of the indispensable names
and performers in supercross, so, is he…
…better than you were in 2019? Or are things
just coming a bit easier now?
“I’d like to think so! 2019 was a great year.
2020 was just a solid year as we got 2nd in
the championship but I feel I’m at my best so
far. I’m maturing a little bit and I’ve gotten to
know the team and the bike a lot better and my
competitors more. Importantly, [I know] what it
takes to win at this level. This has been my best
year so far.”
Your Team Manager, Ian Harrison, said he was
impressed by the fact that you always ‘had
a plan’ for the races. It was one of your main
strengths. Would you agree?
“Yeah, I think so. The preparation off the bike
has been the same but I think knowing my
