Fifteen Years 

of Lunches 

Tale 

Fifteen years sharing an office (and lunch time) with 

these girls – what can I say? What goes on (or gets 

eaten) in the office stays in the office…or it did until 

now. 

Looking back at the last fifteen years a lot has 

changed. Babies have been born, pets have come 

(and gone), houses have been bought and sold, kids 

have flown the nest and then come back (grrrrr) but 

one thing has remained a constant. Our collective 

obsession with food and, no coincidence, but also our 

weight. 

Lunchtime at NG mags HQ is always midday. It’s the 

absolute earliest we can get away with, although Cat 

has been known to crack at 11.45. Then it becomes 

like feeding time at Twycross. Heads pop over desks 

like meerkats to see what everyone else is eating. The 

envy is palpable if you have a soggy, limp salad while 

across the desk someone is tucking into a cheese and 

ham toastie. 

Over the years our customers and contributors have 

treated us to burgers, pork pies, pizza, graze boxes, 

samosas, Indian wraps, cream cakes, cup cakes, 

strawberry cakes and the list goes on, but you get the 

picture. Food is a big part of our day. 

There was a point about eleven years ago when Cat 

was on maternity leave and Sarah and I totally lost the 

plot, creating huge lunches for each other every day. 

Toasted bagels, half a sharing pack of crisps each, 

salad, piles of couscous and hummus. At the time I 

genuinely couldn’t understand how I had managed to 

put a stone on in six months. It was all healthy stuff 

– apart from the crisps – but we had absolutely no 

portion control whatsoever. 

We finally came to our senses when neither of us could 

do our jeans up. But then, typical of us girls, we went 

completely the other way and jumped feet first into the 

5:2 diet. That was fun…not. 

For those not familiar with this diet, you eat normally 

5 days a week and on 2 days you limit your calorie 

intake to 500. That’s 500. For the whole day. Just a 

note about the definition of “normally”- for Gary (who 

I persuaded to join in as well) this meant a full-on fry 

up on “normal” days and a bottle of wine, although 

not at the same time. All in the name of research, you 

understand, to see if the diet would still work (it did). 

The novelty of trying to find anything tasty and filling 

with virtually no calories soon wore off. Even now, if I 

dare to mention cauliflower rice to Gary, he breaks out 

in a cold sweat and reaches for the takeaway menu. 

Not content with starving ourselves, we had to prove it. 

After watching a programme on the telly that showed 

us how to check whether our bodies were burning fat, 

we were straight on to Amazon ordering ketone sticks. 

You had to wee on the stick (a messy business) and 

wait to see what colour it went. That particular craze 

lasted about a week. I still have a pack of these sticks 

- a lasting reminder of how ridiculous we were! 

The next fad was a detox and sugar free diet. Sarah 

gave up after 35 minutes, complaining of a headache. 

The rest of us limped on for another few days before 

we all cracked, the sweet bag was ripped open and 

another diet bit the dust. 

The best idea we have ever had was our Wednesday 

lunch club. No fat free nonsense. No sugar free. No 

low calorie. Just homemade, healthy food. 

Although I have to say, even now we can tell you the 

calories in a double dipped chocolate toffee - and mild 

panic rippled through the office yesterday when we 

realised Sainsbury’s rice cakes had 10 more calories 

that the Asda ones. Old habits die hard!!

In the Pink 

I love rhubarb. As a kid I remember being given 

a stick along with a cup of sugar and happily 

dipping and munching my way through it. 

Luckily for me it is very easy to grow and I 

have two decent plants in the garden that are 

already looking good with absolutely no eff ort 

on my part. 

Botanically rhubarb is a vegetable but the 

beautiful pink stems are treated as a fruit. For 

years I didn’t know what forced rhubarb was, 

however now as a rhubarb farmer myself I 

have discovered that it refers to rhubarb that 

is grown in warm, dark conditions from late 

December until the end of March. The stalks 

grow up in the hope of fi nding light. This 

variety is less fi brous than the outdoor variety 

and has a more delicate fl avour. 

I cannot wait to start harvesting my crop. 

The gin recipe opposite is so easy and tastes 

absolutely lovely. I have mine with tonic and 

ice. It also makes a lovely gift (not that I give 

much away!). The cake is a bit more of a 

challenge but so worth it. Enjoy!

Rhubarb Crumble 

Cake 

Rhubarb Gin 

1kg pink rhubarb stalks 

400g white caster sugar 

800ml gin 

Method 

Wash and trim the rhubarb stalks. Cut 

into 3cm lengths. Put into a large kilner 

jar and add the sugar. Give it a good 

mix round and leave it for 24 hours so 

the sugar can draw the juice out of the 

rhubarb. Then add the gin. Seal the lid 

and give it a good shake. Put it away for 

4 weeks. When ready to drink – strain 

the gin through a sieve lined with muslin 

into a jug and then bottle. 

Rhubarb and Ginger 

Chutney 

250ml cider vinegar 

100g golden caster sugar 

300g chopped rhubarb stalks 

40g pitted dates 

2 tsp ginger – grated 

1 cardamon pod 

Method 

Heat the cider vinegar and sugar in a 

heavy bottomed pan until the sugar has 

dissolved. Then add the rhubarb, dates, 

ginger and cardamon. Cook for about 20 

mins until the rhubarb has broken down 

and the mixture has turned into a thick 

chutney. Season with salt. Place into a 

sterilised jar. Will keep for up to 3 months 

– if it lasts that long! Delicious served with 

cheese and crackers. 

This is more of a pudding than a cake. 

Delicious served with custard or cream. 

For the roast rhubarb filling 

400g rhubarb – chopped into 1” 

slices 

150g sugar 

1 x orange (zest & juice) 

For the cake 

175g unsalted butter (softened) 

300g ground almonds 

170g soft brown sugar 

1tsp vanilla extract 

2 x eggs 

For the crumble topping 

70g unsalted butter 

70g plain flour 

70g soft brown sugar 

70g oats 

50g chopped walnuts 

Method 

First, roast the rhubarb. Heat oven 

to 200°C. In a small roasting tin mix 

rhubarb, sugar, zest & juice of the 

orange. Roast for 10 mins until soft and 

smelling delicious. Leave to cool. 

Next, make the cake. Grease and line a 

deep 20cm spring form cake tin. Heat 

oven to 180°C. Beat butter and sugar 

until light and fl uffy. Mix in eggs and 

vanilla extract. Add ground almonds and 

mix thoroughly. Gently fold in the roasted 

rhubarb (not the juice) and pour mixture 

into tin. 

For the topping, rub the fl our and butter 

together between your fi ngers until you 

have clumps. Rub in all other ingredients 

and cover the top of the cake. Bake for 

60 mins. It should be a very moist cake, 

almost like a pudding.

Based on the title of this piece, you may be 

rolling your eyes and thinking “Great, another 

young person preaching about the environment.” 

However, as a young person I still don’t feel like 

we are being listened to. It would be great if you 

could spare 5 minutes to read this article. If we all 

do our bit it will make a difference. 

Plastic pollution. What is it? By definition, it is 

determined as the accumulation in the environment 

of synthetic plastic products to the point where they 

create problems for wildlife and their habitats as well 

as for human populations. Interestingly however, 

plastic waste reflects humanities lack of recycling, 

highlighted by the fact that the UK only recycle one 

quarter of plastic (the remaining three quarters are 

what go on to destroy wildlife). 

This is such a massive issue, due to the 

degradability of the material itself. The composition 

of plastic is chemically formulated in such a way 

that it can take over 400 years to fully degrade. 

Within this time, it gradually collects and gathers 

- eventually consuming our oceans. The largest 

recorded plastic gyre (plastic garbage patch) in 

the ocean is situated in the North Pacific (between 

Hawaii and California) and is 1.6 million square 

kilometeres. 

Facing these sorts of statistics, though shocking, is 

necessary. The prevention of any further, alarming 

facts is also immensely important. That is why, 

even the smallest of measures, can help to reduce 

the global plastic pollution crisis. From carrying 

your own, reusable metal water bottle, to venturing 

into the world of second-hand furniture: minimal 

changes can add up to produce a big difference. 

Currently, only 4% of British households get a milk 

delivery service. By finding a milkman who uses 

glass bottles that can be reused and recycled you 

are doing your bit. 

Globally however, the management of plastic 

waste must be more strictly controlled. Recycling 

sorting facilities need to increase the specificity 

within sorting plastics in order to ensure maximum 

efficiency. This will prevent more unnecessary 

plastic waste. A conscious effort to actively avoid 

environmental ignorance can be the catalyst to a 

better, less polluted ocean. 

The occurrence of pollution not only greatly 

threatens the survival of wildlife; but also threatens 

food safety, human health, coastal tourism, and 

climate change. That is why, now more than ever, 

it is crucial we address the plastic pollution crisis 

while there is still time to do so. As a young person, I 

am desperately fearful of the world I will grow old in. 

I am anxious for my future children - for the places 

they will play and the water they will drink. It is easy 

to dismiss these concerns, hide them away as they 

are “too far off”, yet time flies. 

Educate yourself on recycling. Small changes make 

a BIG difference.

Golf is the perfect socially-distanced sport – there’s 

no physical contact necessary and you’re out in the 

fresh air. The governing body for the game, England 

Golf, say the activity associated with playing a round 

of golf can help mental wellbeing by raising mood and 

lowering anxiety. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that 

last year, in the months when activity was permitted, 

that golf saw a big upswing in those taking up the 

hobby. 

As a sociable outdoor activity, it has got a lot going for 

it. According to England Golf, walking and playing 18 

holes will take around 15,000 steps and burn around 

1,200 calories. They also say golf has been proven to 

extend life expectancy – on average golfers live five 

years longer than non-golfers! 

We are lucky to have some really attractive golf 

courses in our area and now that spring is here and 

the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions is on the horizon, 

what better time to take up golf?

of a professional coach. Group lessons are a great 

way to meet other beginners, make new friends and 

have a laugh! And, with a bit of practice, you’ll soon be 

hitting the ball into holes with ease and really enjoying 

the game. Anyone can do it, children included.

These are often free of charge. England Golf has an 

online ‘Find and Play’ service to help beginners find a 

friendly local club that offers a Get into Golf scheme.

A campaign called Girls Golf Rocks 2021 will be 

introducing golf to a new generation of beginner girl 

golfers aged between seven and 14. It’s all part of a 

drive to encourage more women to get out onto golf 

courses. Girls are invited to register their interest by

England Golf say currently only 15% of club members 

are female, meaning our country is lagging far behind 

many European countries. Their aim is to increase the 

proportion of women golfers to 20% this year. 

England Golf is the national governing body for the 

amateur game. The organisation looks after the

Are you getting enough protein? 

So many people who come to us for health 

coaching aren’t consuming anywhere near 

enough protein in their daily diet. 

Through the media and clever marketing, protein 

gets linked to building muscle, which for a lot of 

people, particularly women, worries them. They 

don’t want to get too big or muscular. So protein is 

avoided and calories made up elsewhere, often with 

carbs (which are not the devils work, stick with me…) 

Let me explain… 

We need carbs and fats in our diet, this is 100% fact 

and neither should be considered ‘bad’. BUT… we 

do need to be mindful of how much we consume. 

Effectively, carbs are sugars once they are broken 

down into fuel, and we only need so much fuel to 

actually use as energy. The overspill we consume 

will need to be stored, EVEN IF YOU ARE WITHIN 

YOUR CALORIES (now read this again before 

moving on). 

So, this is the first part. Calories consumed need to 

be a healthy combination of ALL macronutrients. 

Having too much fuel can still lead to seeing little to 

no effect on body fat loss. 

NOW, let’s talk protein and its many key benefits - 

which aren’t just for building muscle. 

Protein is made up of amino acids (the building 

blocks of muscle). It repairs torn and broken-down 

muscle fibre. So essentially, you have to be creating 

damage to muscle, like resistance training in the 

gym, for muscle to repair and grow. Consuming 

protein alone will not make muscle grow. 

Next, protein helps with food satiety - it keeps you 

fuller for longer. 

AND it helps with hormone regulation and aids 

recovery of the body. 

It’s important to remember that our bodies don’t 

store protein, so we need to eat it every day. So 

how much protein should we be consuming daily to 

unlock these key benefits? 

Around 1g of protein per 1lb of bodyweight. So, 

180lb in weight = 180g of protein. A scale of 0.6- 

1.5g of protein per 1lb of body weight is used when 

working out your intake needs. 

My mini challenge for you: 

At your next meal, see how much protein you are 

actually consuming. Protein can come into your 

diet in many ways, not just from meat and protein 

shakes. Think eggs, tofu, beans and seafood. Assess 

your daily protein intake for a week. Remember you 

need to spread the consumption out over the day. 

Are you close to 1g per 1lb of body weight per day? 

Main Meal Idea 

KOREAN PORK BOWL (Serves 1) 

Ingredients 

½ tbsp coconut oil 

180g lean pork thinly sliced 

1 small carrot 

½ courgette 

4 mushrooms – sliced 

½ red pepper 

175g cooked basmati rice 

For the sauce 

1 tsp hot chilli sauce 

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 

1 tsp honey 

1 clove garlic – crushed 

½ thumb size piece ginger – finely chopped 

1 tbsp dark soy sauce 

Method 

1. Melt half the coconut oil in a large pan/wok 

2. Add the pork in single layers and cook for 1-2 

mins each side. Then set aside 

3. Peel the carrot into thin strips and slice the 

courgette into matchsticks 

4. Melt remaining oil in the pan, stir fry the carrot, 

courgette and mushrooms for 2 mins. 

5. Remove from heat and allow to sit for 2-3 mins. 

6. For the sauce, mix together all of the ingredients 

and set aside. 

7. Place the cooked rice in a bowl and place the 

pork and veg on top. 

8. Drizzle the sauce over the top and serve

Amidst all the chaos of the past year we are able to 

resume outdoor bowls . 

Complying with all the Covid rules and the 

government roadmap has meant a stuttering start 

for many clubs with rules changing at each stage. 

For many senior players the vaccine programme 

has bought much relief, but we must always remain 

mindful of the safety rules. 

The club has experienced a surge in recruitment as 

other summer holiday pursuits have been curtailed 

and we hope this leads to a resurgence of our 

sport. We certainly all need to get out and enjoy the 

outdoors. 

With a full league programme and county 

competitions to fulfil, all we now need is help from 

the British weather! 

Coronation Park green is open again daily from 12 

noon to 7pm and car parking is available.

A local retired couple have used lockdown to 

publish a new walking book celebrating a world 

famous author’s love of the countryside. 

Martin and Chris Perry, who have lived in Watnall for 

42 years, were inspired by Eastwood’s D H Lawrence. 

The book, entitled ‘D H Lawrence Country - 10 

Circular Walks’ encourages readers to explore the 

area where Lawrence grew up and compare the 

scenery to how it would have looked when Lawrence 

was alive. All of the walks are centred around famous 

landmarks referred to in Lawrence’s books including: 

Cossall (Cossethay in The Rainbow) 

Brinsley Colliery (Beggarlee in Sons and Lovers) 

Haggs Farm (Miriams Farm in Sons and Lovers) 

Martin said; “We’ve concentrated on the beautiful 

countryside, the ‘country of his heart’. We’ve included 

a map of how it would have looked when D H 

Lawrence was alive.” 

Martin added; “We are not being paid any royalties 

whatsoever. We hold these walks very dearly and just 

want to share them with as many people as possible.”

Vaccinating your pet is a 

key step in protecting your 

pet against life threatening 

diseases. 

Vaccinations boost your 

pet’s immunity and act as 

the first line of defence 

against some very nasty 

and potentially fatal 

diseases. 

Puppies get protection initially in life from their mother’s 

milk and then as they are weaned this protection wanes 

and thus vaccinations are required to maintain it. 

Typically, we vaccinate puppies at 8, 10 and 12 weeks of 

age, to allow for early socialisation at 11 weeks of age. 

The primary puppy course acts to stimulate the body’s 

immune system to produce a protective response then 

the yearly booster afterwards maintains this immunity. 

Cat vaccinations 

Vaccinating your cat is very important for their health 

and for the control of infectious disease, not only for 

your cat but for the cat population as a whole. Kittens 

can typically be vaccinated from 9 and 12 weeks of 

age. The greater the proportion of the population that 

is vaccinated the lower the risk for your cat, even when 

they themselves are vaccinated. 

Rabbit vaccinations 

Rabbit vaccination is available against two fatal 

diseases – Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic 

Disease. Rabbits can typically be vaccinated from 7 

weeks of age. We strongly recommend that all pet 

rabbits be vaccinated on an annual basis with the 

combined vaccination for Myxomatosis and Viral 

Haemorrhagic Disease. 

Booster vaccination after an initial course is vital for all 

rabbits. Remember Scarsdale Vets always combines

One other result of 

the pandemic in the 

workplace 

Hasn’t it been uplifting hearing about the random 

acts of kindness and compassionate interactions 

experienced by some over the past year? 

Not just individuals but businesses stepping up to 

support their workers or benefit local charities to help 

those in need. Some days it’s been so inspiring seeing 

the best of humanity on the news or on social media. 

My Instagram feed is full of these feel good accounts. 

However it’s disturbing to also read and hear about 

the not so nice effect of the pandemic on some. Not 

everyone has felt the need to carry on with the Be Kind 

campaign which was everywhere just before lockdown. 

In the workplace Covid seems to have brought 

out the worst in some bosses and intensified poor 

leadership that was already there. Manipulative and 

passive-aggressive behaviours have got worse in 

many instances where the pressures of managing a 

workforce through the pandemic has been challenging 

to say the least. ACAS report that their coronavirus web 

advice portal has seen 3.6 million visitors and the ACAS 

helpline experienced a three-fold increase in calls. Their 

dispute resolution service also saw higher demand. It 

seems that there’s a lot of unhappy people out there. 

The challenges of working from home have included not 

only isolation and anxiety in many but also stress in the 

form of surveillance 24/7. According to a Gallup survey 

less than half (45%) felt strongly that their employer 

cares about their wellbeing. Add to that an employer 

arrogance that people who ‘need’ their jobs will just 

have to put up with it and it’s a recipe for stressful 

workplace relations. 

What to do? Maintain your own values – just because 

your boss is behaving badly doesn’t mean you have 

to reciprocate. Respectfully confront your manager 

– challenge the behaviour. As the economy begins to 

reopen and recover bad managers will inevitably be 

exposed as employees choose to find themselves a 

better boss.

Hardy sages for 

the flower garden 

Most people’s introduction to 

the wonderful world of salvias 

is either courtesy of sage, the 

well-loved herb grown from 

time immemorial for its culinary 

and medicinal value or perhaps 

the bright red bedding plant 

Salvia splendens traditionally 

planted with blue lobelia and 

white alyssum for a truly patriotic 

display. However, hardy, 

perennial salvias are becoming 

increasingly popular as great 

garden plants for people and 

bees. These are not all edible 

but make a wonderful, longlasting 

display in the garden. 

There is a vast array of perennial 

salvias to choose from including 

many tender types, but this 

time I’m focusing on the hardy, 

perennial European types that 

are great for most gardens. 

Of the European species, the 

best for general garden use are 

the wood sages and these are 

varieties of Salvia nemorosa, 

sylvestris and superba. They 

grow in dry or moist soils and 

can be grown in light shade or 

a sunny spot. They grow well in 

alkaline (chalky), neutral or mildly 

acid soils. Add lime annually if 

planting in extremely acid soils. 

They have rough leaves and 

short spikes of fl owers from 

June through July. If you cut 

them back hard after fl owering, 

they will normally oblige with 

more fl owers in late August into 

September. The planting distance 

for these is about 12-18in / 30- 

45cm apart. 

They come in many shades of 

blue, pink, violet and white and 

vary in height from 1ft / 30cm 

through to 3ft 6in / 105cm. 

Snow Hill and Blue Hill (properly 

called by their German names 

Schneehügel and Blauhügel) 

are the shortest ones I grow 

and are snow-white and skyblue 

respectively. Among my 

favourites are the slightly taller 

May Night (indigo blue) and 

East Friesland (blue) and the 

lovely Rose Queen (pink). 

The newer variety Caradonna 

grows to about 2ft / 60cm tall 

and has lovely blue fl owers and 

black stems in summer adding to 

their drama. 

One of the tallest is the aptly 

named Amethyst which grows to 

3ft / 90cm or slightly more. This 

one has a long fl owering period 

from June to September or even 

October without the need to be 

cut back at all. 

Of course, there are also many 

ornamental varieties of the 

herb sage for growing in a 

free-draining, sunny spot and 

you can fi nd types with purple, 

golden and variegated leaves.

Knife Crime Team Doubles In Size 

A specialist police team committed 

to driving down knife crime in 

Nottinghamshire now has even more 

teeth after doubling in size. 

An extra sergeant and six police 

constables have beefed up the numbers 

on Nottinghamshire Police’s successful 

Knife Crime Team, increasing its capacity 

to tackle violence and crime, remove 

dangerous weapons and drugs from the 

streets and keep people safe. 

It’s a welcome boost to the force’s 

ongoing work to further reduce knife 

crime by working closely with partners, 

including Nottinghamshire’s enterprising 

Violence Reduction Unit, and by using a 

combination of engagement, education 

and enforcement. 

The boost in numbers comes after 

latest official figures by the Office for 

National Statistics show that knife crime 

in Nottinghamshire reduced by 4% in the 

year end to September 2020, compared 

to the previous year. 

Nottinghamshire’s fall in knife crime 

was in stark contrast to the regional and 

national picture (East Midlands regional 

average rise of 2% and nationwide fall of 

3% across England and Wales). 

The new Knife Crime Team recruits are 

based in Mansfield but can be deployed 

anywhere in the county, acting on 

intelligence and targeting those involved 

in criminality. 

They will also work closely with fellow 

Knife Crime Team members in the city, 

combining their resources effectively to 

help keep communities safe. 

The force has been able to swell the ranks 

of the Knife Crime Team due to being 

at the forefront of the national police 

recruitment drive through Operation Uplift,

• 450 weapons seized since team’s 

inception in 2016 

• Over 35,000 miles patrolled across 

Nottinghamshire 

As well as strong enforcement 

action to crack down on knife crime, 

Nottinghamshire Police has also 

reintroduced schools and early 

intervention officers who are dedicated to 

working with children across the county 

as part of its prevention work. 

The force also continues to work closely 

with its local partners and communities 

to help tackle what is a societal issue 

through education as well as diversionary 

and intensive preventative intervention 

work. A key driver helping to steer young 

people away from knife crime and 

violence is the Violence Reduction Unit 

which continues to work with vulnerable 

individuals and families to help make a 

difference to young lives and put them 

on the road to a safer and more positive 

future. 

Street outreach workers, a custody 

diversion scheme and other initiatives 

including the Ben Kinsella Trust at the 

National Justice Museum also serve to 

educate young people and help them to 

make positive life choices.

True to VW design it is smart, 

sleek and clinical both inside

it is the Black Edition so what

Football in a time of Covid 

For many years I have had a long standing love of 

football. Despite only watching the odd game on TV 

in my formative years (back when you were lucky if 

there was one game a month on the telly and the 

FA Cup final really was the biggest football event of 

the year) I blundered into a sport which still holds me 

in its thrall. And in the last few years it has become 

even more important to me as my son is absolutely 

obsessed with the game. 

It started a few years ago when one of our local teams 

was looking for a goalkeeper. Apparently at that age 

goalkeepers are hard to find as kids just want to belt 

the ball into the net. Fortunately my lad enjoyed the 

idea of flinging himself around in muddy goalmouths 

so he got the gig. Over time he decided he wanted to 

have a bit more involvement in games as the team he 

played for were pretty good and there’s only so many 

wet Sundays that you want to be shivering in goal. So 

he became a defender, and then a midfielder. Now 

he plays for two teams so our Saturday and Sunday 

mornings are completely accounted for, as well as 

two evenings a week training. So you’d think there 

was no more time for football right? Well, you’d be 

quite wrong there... 

Rewind back to March last year and his Sunday team 

needed a coach. As parents, we wanted the team 

to continue and I was asked to take on the team. 

In hindsight I think this was mostly due to the fact 

that I loved a bit of admin and appeared organised, 

but to be honest I was really looking forward to the 

challenge. 

Running a Sunday League team was a complete 

mystery to me, as a parent I normally just paid the 

subs and turned up to watch the games. Now I was 

responsible for getting the team organised, running 

training, liaising with other teams, getting the players 

registered, making sure subs were paid, pumping up 

the footballs and understanding how to work with the 

club that my team were part of. 

And then there was Covid. 

If you ever wanted to pick a time to start running a 

football team, doing it as a global pandemic ripped 

through youth sports may not have been the ideal 

scenario. As well as working out how to run a team I 

now had to understand all of the various paperwork 

and rules that accompanied Covid. No doubt the 

same as every other youth coach in the country this 

meant a huge change in how teams and leagues 

would be run. Everything changed, games were 

postponed, we had no idea when we were able to 

play again, and the kids went months without seeing 

each other. I can only speak for my club, but the 

support that Arnold Town FC offered was fantastic. 

They bent over backwards to help all of us navigate 

the new rules and keep us going when we didn’t 

know what was happening next. 

And then we got the news that we could start training 

again. Everyone was delighted to be back, we’d 

all had different experiences of lockdown but once 

the first football was kicked we got our own bit of 

normality back. 

We’ve been really lucky that most of our kids have 

played together for a few years, and the new ones 

that have come in have settled really quickly. And this 

goes for the parents too. It’s common to only hear the 

negative side of overly competitive parents in Sunday 

League but my experience has been one of total 

support. They’ve all helped out with training, running 

the line, or even refereeing the odd game. 

And the team are doing okay on the pitch too. I’m 

no tactical mastermind but we win our fair share and 

compete even when we lose. More importantly we all 

enjoy it together. The kids are all learning and seeing 

them develop is amazing and the parents are all on 

board with the philosophy that everyone gets to play, 

no matter their ability. 

So, in hindsight I couldn’t have picked a worse time to 

start coaching a football team. But on the other hand 

it’s been a phenomenal experience and probably 

stopped me from going insane in the last year or so. 

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me 

eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood 

and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

I moved to Kimberley at the end of 1986, so I have 

lived here for thirty-four happy years. 

Before that, I was leading the sophisticated life down 

south – commuting daily into central London to work; 

travelling round on the tube; shopping in the West End; 

seeing the latest shows at the theatre on Shaftesbury 

Avenue; going to the proms at the Royal Albert Hall. 

The other day I was at home, sitting on the lawn 

reading my book in the warm sunshine. It was 

perfectly quiet and peaceful. The spring blossom was 

out. Everything smelled sweet and fresh. 

one of the ‘volunteers’ drafted in by George to help 

with the manoeuvre. He remembers that the sow 

weighed a ton, and she fought and kicked frantically 

as the chaps tried to lift her up. Eventually, in a heroic 

effort, they managed to hoist her up above head 

height, and heave her over the wall. 

What he remembers most of all is the racket she 

made – squealing and shrieking at the top of her 

voice as she squirmed and struggled. He said the din 

must have been heard all over Kimberley. And she 

kept it up throughout the whole undignified procedure 

until she was at last deposited back on her trotters. 

The next day, on the way back from my daily dog walk, 

I bumped into an old friend I hadn’t seen for a while. 

He belongs to an old-established Kimberley family. 

His grandfather built my house, in 1875. 

My friend hadn’t met my dog before so there was a 

mutually enthusiastic introduction. Then we got to 

talking about making a garden suitably secure for a 

dog. I pointed out that I have the original 6ft high brick 

wall at the end of my garden (which is now topped 

with a 2ft fence). 

My friend laughed and launched into a story about 

George Topley, a former resident of my house. George 

kept pigs. 

I had always associated the piggeries in my garden 

with the original owners of the house in the 19th 

century. Shades of Thomas Hardy’s “Jude the 

Obscure” (published in 1895) always came to mind 

with that graphically gruesome description of 

slaughtering the pig. 

But George and his pig handlers were not living in 

the 19th century. We’re talking about 60 years ago. It 

amuses and amazes me to think that my friend can 

remember when there were actually pigs in residence 

here in my garden, stinking the place out, producing 

litters, and being manhandled noisily over 6ft walls. 

The distance between London and Kimberley in the 

1960’s was not measured only in miles. 

My house was bought in 1986 as “cottage with 

piggeries”. My garden shed and greenhouse and a 

bigger out-building were all originally pigsties. 

My friend could remember the occasion when George 

had a pregnant sow that needed to be got out of the 

garden. For reasons best known to George, it was 

decided that the preferred method was to lift her over 

the back wall where, presumably, there was a vehicle 

waiting to transport her.

boosters when the WI 

started during the First 

World War, but the WI 

has always been more than that” says Helen. 

From its conception in Canada the WI has always 

been about improving the lives of women through 

education. Which fits perfectly with Helen’s doctorate 

in Education. During the pandemic Helen played a 

key role in helping Notts Federation to continue to 

support members through monthly newsletters, and 

a wide variety of Zoom events. 

A member of Watnall WI for over 25 years where 

she has been president, secretary and treasurer at 

different times, she is also a WI Adviser a role that 

starts new WIs and supports many others. Helen was 

honoured when asked to join the Federation Board of 

Trustees and even more so when elected Chair at a 

recent meeting. 

Education and campaigns are at the heart of the WI. 

Notts Federation supports action on climate change 

and women’s issues. “However,” says Helen, “It’s the 

social side of the WI that is so important, and for that 

you really do need to be able to make [or buy] a cake.”

people no longer in full time employment who are 

looking for a friendly group to meet up with to 

develop existing or new interests. 

We have over 300 members and 40 interest groups 

ranging from board games, creative writing, pub 

pals, Spanish, family history, skittles, theatre group, 

war babies and boomers. All groups are run by our 

members for our members. 

We meet once a month at St Mary’s Church 

Eastwood or via Zoom. 

At our monthly ‘face to face’ meetings we have a 

speaker plus up to date information on groups and 

the chance to have a chat and a cup of tea or coffee 

with a friendly crowd.

from some minor meeting room costs this covers

Inflatable Family Fun Days 

take place at Mellish Rugby Club 

(3-6 Jun). Advanced tickets will

For something a little more 

serene, join Belvoir Castle as 

they celebrate horticulture by 

hosting a Flower and Garden

The story of Zack Snyder’s Justice League is one of 

the most peculiar in recent memory. After a family 

tragedy, Snyder left production on Justice League in 

2017 and Warner Brothers brought in Joss Whedon 

to reshoot and re-edit the film. This resulted in a 

choppy mess that felt incoherent and very mixed in 

its tone and overall sense of storytelling. After years 

of fan outcry for a ‘Snyder cut’ of the film, we were 

finally given what we wanted almost 4 years after the 

film’s initial theatrical release. 

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a triumphant 

comeback for the controversial director. He rounds 

off his trilogy of DC films in an appropriately epic 

way that will leave fans of DC satisfied and begging 

for more. This is truly Snyder’s vision come to life and 

it doesn’t feel bogged down by studio interference. 

It’s a love letter to fans of the comics and serves 

as a powerful testament to what can be achieved 

through passion for the craft. Despite the film having 

a few issues here and there, mostly regarding the 

script, the 4-hour runtime is utilised very well to craft 

likeable characters and an engaging story, allowing 

it to become a far superior film to what we got in 

2017.

FULL METAL JACKET 

Stanley Kubrick is ultimately known for mastering the 

cinematic art of screwing with your head, whether it 

be in a claustrophobic hotel complex or the vacuum 

of space. Nearly 35 years after he captured the 

psychedelic and moral hell of the Vietnam War, how 

does Full Metal Jacket’s screaming war-face stand? 

This film can essentially be considered in two separate 

halves. The first, centring on the brutal process of recruit 

training, focusing on ruthless drill sergeant Hartman 

(played astoundingly by R. Lee Ermey) ordering each 

private through backbreaking training, and villainously 

punishing anyone with a hair out of place, to transform 

these trainee ‘maggots’ into war-thirsty killers. The nonstylised 

cinematography, unlike Kubrick’s other famous 

works, plays well into the training-montage element, 

creating a claustrophobic feel as you’re arrested into the 

paranoid perspectives of the privates with the complete 

absence of sound except the barking of orders and 

responses. The sudden shift in cinematic tone in the 

first half’s finale shows more of Kubrick’s auteur touch 

still-present in an unfamiliar environment. 

Full Metal Jacket’s second half, however, doesn’t quite 

hold up as well. Our now-hardened recruits move onto 

an all-out war montage in their Vietnam outposts. While 

the concrete jungle violence and moral questioning 

faced by the wise-cracking military journalist, Joker, 

certainly entertain, the tropes seem quite overly-familiar 

even before the film’s release. 

While not the milestone in war films to the extent of 

previous achievements, Full Metal Jacket remains 

an iconic classic filled with some of cinema’s 

most brilliantly-colourful dialogue and arresting 

performances, though its quality in terms of uniqueness 

condenses mostly into its first hour. Now before you let 

those eyes wander off the page, answer me this! You 

got a war face?

notinghamshire libraries are now open after the national 

lockdown

We were delighted to have reopened 

Nottinghamshire County Libraries and Archives 

following national lockdown and are pleased to see 

so many of you again at Eastwood Library. Whilst 

many libraries are still operating on a temporary 

timetable of reduced hours, customers are able 

to visit us to browse, borrow, return and reserve, 

with advance booking required to use PCs, study 

space and to visit Nottinghamshire Archives to view 

archival documents. In addition, until the end of 

June, we are offering an overdue charges amnesty 

where we invite customers to return library books 

and we’ll waive charges due, welcome you back 

and even give you a new library card if yours has 

disappeared. 

With the priority on staff and customer safety, 

measures currently include; limited capacity in 

buildings, additional cleaning routines, reorganized 

layouts to aid social distancing and quarantine 

arrangements for books. Face coverings for staff 

and customers continue to be mandatory, unless 

exempt, including if you are seated at a computer. 

Many Inspire staff were busy during lockdown 

helping put together books for our Click & Collect 

service, taking part in Reading Friends – our 

telephone befriending service or helping with Home 

Delivery collections. 

In addition to borrowing books you might like to 

join us and take part in the Innocent Big Knit 

and help raise money for Age UK by knitting or 

crocheting a mini Robin Hood hat. Full details and

Finally, we’re really looking forward to summer 

when the annual Summer Reading Challenge will 

be back in libraries. Developed in partnership with 

World Wildlife Fund, the world’s leading independent 

conservation organisation, Wild World Heroes will 

be a celebration of reading, nature and action for the 

environment. 

The Summer Reading Challenge is produced by The 

Reading Agency and runs in libraries all over the 

country. The challenge, aimed at children aged 4 to 

11 years, is to read six or more library books over 

the summer. There are stickers and other rewards 

for every book read. Children who complete the 

challenge receive a medal and a certificate. So do 

keep a look out on our website or visit us for more 

details in the weeks to come!

GEM CONNECTION - the Gems returned to live rehearsals 

from May 20th in Kirk Hallam Social Club. This is to be our 

brand-new rehearsal venue following the devastating fire 

which gutted Harrington Junior School in May last year. 

The Chorus have been working hard on health and safety 

and safeguarding, putting things in place so we can return to 

live rehearsals safely, although numbers will be reduced until 

the release of restrictions that will allow us to meet normally. 

The Gems have continued to meet weekly over the past year 

via Zoom sessions run expertly by Karen Searson who was 

voted Barber Shopper Of The Year. 

Unfortunately, we are unable to welcome any prospective 

new members at present but anyone wishing to make 

enquiries about the chorus can visit our web site at

EASTWOOD COLLIERIES’ MALE VOICE CHOIR - despite 

having our centenary celebrations interrupted by the 

Covid-19 pandemic, ECMVC has not been idle. We have 

been holding weekly online practice sessions for almost a 

year and have produced six virtual choir videos, featuring 

those members who wished to participate (and who could 

manage the technology!) These videos have enabled us 

to keep in touch with our friends and supporters and have 

demonstrated that we are still alive and kicking! And we’ve 

received some great feedback, for which we’re extremely 

grateful – makes us feel loved and wanted! 

We’re in the process of planning our return to singing 

together but, in the meantime, you can view all our virtual 

choir videos and much, much more on our YouTube channel 

(the latest one is a Gareth Malone arrangement of the highly 

appropriate ‘We Shall Overcome’). You can either Google

ROCK ‘N’ SOUL SINGERS - Our plans to meet up for
