The satellite
Improved imaging and data transmission performance:
• Improved imaging quality, with a significant rise in the number of observation channels, radiometric
performance and data quantification, plus an increase in the number of repeat cycles.
This capacity makes a substantial contribution to real-time weather forecasting and to digital
forecasting models, without forgetting the environmental and climatology watch.
• The meteorological telecommunications payload, which transmits the images acquired by the
MSG’s optical instrumentation, offers greater data transmission capacity and is more efficient
than that of the first generation of satellites.
These satellites provide two additional missions: relaying of distress signals for the Search &
Rescue (S&R) system and the GERB (Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget) instrument.
