your size by walking across a room, be split into an infinite
number of reflections, stand on the ceiling, defy gravity, or
be taller than your 6ft dad? Maybe it is! Definitely worth a
visit this month, this meticulously produced installation of
six ‘rooms’ features classic optical illusions which appear to
alter reality in ways that simply cannot be true. Entrance is
Half a dozen reads and a (big) bottle of wine
A kidnapped heiress, a robbery, an escape. And a 20-year-old cold case – the FBI
has no leads, no clues, no success. Until two decades later, when a murdered
man is found in his apartment, along with one of the stolen items and a suitcase
with the initials WHL3. Windsor Horne Lockwood III. Or Win, as he’s called by his
few friends. And what Win has, and the FBI doesn’t, is a personal connection to
the case, a large fortune, and his own unique brand of justice. Harlan Coben,
with his signature twists and turns, keeps the adrenaline going in Win, his latest,
massively gripping thriller. Century. Available at exclusivebooks.co.za • A five-yearold
child missing in the woods, his nine-year-old sister who’s known to stretch
the truth. An imaginary friend, deceitful husband, and a best-selling author
… all come together in a thriller that keeps you guessing from start to finish.
To Tell You The Truth by Gilly Macmillan is another unputdownable read … one
boasting a final page that leaves you desperate for more. Penguin.
Win a magnum of The Old Man’s Blend
There are some big, bold, gripping reads this June. Which call for a big, bold wine.
A big, bold magnum of wine. Hello Groote Post’s The Old Man’s Blend Red
2019. This wine is a blend of 50 per cent Merlot and 25 per cent each Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz. ‘This is a fantastic vintage. The three varietals all reached
optimal ripeness in perfect timing for the harvest’, says winemaker Lukas Wentzel.
This is a down-to-earth, ripe-fruit-driven blend. Captivating red fruit notes delight
the senses, most notably cherry, raspberry and cranberry, with soft tannins giving
a smooth finish. R215 from groote-post-wines.myshopify.com/collections/all.
Fancy a magnum for your next book club (or nick it for your dad … you’ll be his
favourite). Simply pop over to GetItNatinalMagazines on Facebook, find our post
Twisted. Dark. Suspenseful (oh, so suspenseful). Lisa Jewell’s books are always
edge-of-your-seat, and The Night She Disappeared is a tremendous
psychological thriller. From the very first page, you’re enveloped in a sense of
doom … you just know there’s going to be no happy-ever-after ending. There’s a
young couple who disappears after a night partying at a massive country estate,
leaving a much-adored baby behind with his gran, a group of not-so-desirable
youngsters who are meant to be their friends but are not terribly concerned
or helpful, and two awful mothers who leave a lot to be desired. There are
drugs and love, secrets and lies, cryptic clues and many, many twists and turns.
Honestly, don’t start it at bedtime … you will not be able to put it down. Penguin
• An isolated, luxury hotel high up in the Swiss Alps, recently converted from an
abandoned sanatorium where, years before, patients were treated (not always
terribly humanely), is the setting of The Sanatorium. An uneasy atmosphere, an
engagement party, a blizzard … and a missing fiancée. It appears someone is
killing off guests, and his – or her – sadistic methods are similar to those used
on the sanatorium patients years before. Fortunately, one of the guests
happens to be a detective, but she’s got demons of her own to deal with.
Dark, sinister, creepy … Sarah Pearse’s debut novel is a Gothic thriller that
will scare the bejesus out of you. Penguin, available from Exclusive Books.
For a feel-good hedonistic read, you
can’t beat Catherine Alliott … her
books are always a treat. In Behind
Closed Doors, she writes the story
of Lisa Palmer … who has the perfect
life with loving children, a dashing
husband and a gorgeous home. But
suddenly it’s all broken marriages,
swopping snazzy London living for a
rural farmhouse retreat, parents who
are growing old disgracefully, and an
old flame popping up unexpectedly.
Great fun, really witty, a brilliant book
for a lazy weekend. Michael Joseph /
Penguin, available from Exclusive Books.
A small town in America, just filled with hate and secrets and abuse
and despair. Tall Bones is Anna Bailey’s debut novel, and she writes
like a dream …. sucking you into the lives of the characters, some
indescribably awful, others who’ll break your heart. The story revolves
around the mystery of a teenager who disappears after a party in the
woods. There are unhappy families with appalling secrets, a fire-andbrimstone
preacher who lords over his flock of God-fearing religious
fanatics, a sheriff ‘who looks like he’s been carved from wood and
then left out in the rain’, who’s also missing a few fingers on his
bear-trap-mangled hand (he pretty much sums up the town, to be
honest). You read with bated breath, as desperate as the townsfolk to
discover what happened in the woods that night, a discovery that’s
going to be the spark that sets this tinder box of small-town rage
alight. An agonising ending for readers who like everything tied
up in a neat little bow! Brilliant. Penguin.
Beat the winter blues and WIN!
Collagen, we know, is good for our bodies all year around, but especially so in winter.
Why? Well, it is a great way to give your immune system a boost and make you feel
better about yourself by easing the signs of ageing. So, why exactly do we need
collagen? Well, as you age your body produces less and less collagen, resulting in
fine lines and wrinkles, dry, brittle hair, weak nails and aching joints. Durban-based Be
Bright has a range of pure collagen powder (starting from R290 for a small jar), which
makes it easy for your body to absorb it quickly. Only one tablespoon is needed every
day to make a difference and you can add it to your breakfast, coffee, yoghurt or a
smoothie – easy as that! Details: www.bebright.co.za or at Woolworths stores.

Natural Gold … keep dad healthy
Health is at the forefront of our minds these days –
for men as well - and that’s just one of the reasons
we love Natural Gold homemade tonic. The
perfect addition to dad’s gift this year, this refined,
tasty, affordable and convenient drink contains a
world of goodness and is even endorsed by the
Heart and Stroke Foundation. From it’s humble
beginnings in 1980, this yummy tonic brings
together a sensational combination of strong,
potent, natural ingredients, including: turmeric,
ginger, garlic, cinnamon, apple cider vinegar, raw
honey, lemon juice, purified water and Himalayan
salts. Known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties,
Liquid Gold also aids with cholesterol, blood
pressure, digestion, detox, weight loss, immune
boosting and energizing - a must for every home.
The recently launched Moringa Magic has similar
properties with a completely different flavour and
both are available in 500ml bottles. Details: www.
naturalgold.co.za, Lynne@naturalgold.co.za (email
Port for the win
A superb meal. Exceptional family and
friends. And a fine port. All the ticks for a
perfect Father’s Day. And while we can’t take
care of the first two, we can help out with
the third. We’ve a three-bottle carry pack
of some jolly splendid port from De Krans
to give away. What’s in the pack? De Krans
Premium Cape Ruby … a dark ruby port full
of the rich flavours of cherries and ripe plum
fruit with hints of chocolate and spice (it’s
best enjoyed at room temperature during
these chilly winters days, and is great paired
with most cheeses and chocolate desserts)
• De Krans Cape Vintage … a rich, deep,
almost inky purple-red port, which has
beautiful aromas of violets, red berries, vanilla
and dark chocolate, and full and rich flavours
… think red fruits, dried prunes, cocoa and
spice (it’s lovely with almost all baked desserts
or served as a sauce over ice cream, and is
excellent on its own or with well-matured
cheese) • De Krans Cape Pink … a rose petal
pink port that has the smooth elegant taste
of cherries, plums and a hint of candyfloss
(this is perfect to have after a lazy al fresco
lunch in the winter sun). One - or all - of these
would make the perfect gift for dad … you’ll
find them from R66 to R118 at dekrans.co.za.
Love and health
It was while she was living in Japan with her professional rugby playing
husband that Megan Pietersen’s passion for traditional health and wellness
was ignited. This was also where her dream of starting her own range of
natural supplements started becoming a reality.
Text: Leah Shone | Photographs: Chris Allan Photo | Hair and makeup: Volenti Laurentina
“I’ve always, since I was young, felt a strange connection to Japan. In a weird way, I think I always knew I was going to live
there at some point. When JP was offered a three-year contract with a rugby team there, it felt like it was meant to be.”
Seated in the kitchen of their beautiful new Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate home, Megan is the picture of contentment.
Her nine-month-old baby girl, Aria, is asleep upstairs and three-year-old Maia is at playschool. Megan’s husband is former
Springbok and Sharks rugby player JP Pietersen, who is now coaching the Sharks team. Having only moved into their newly
built home a few months ago, the couple are finally settling into their space and life on the North Coast.
“We love it here. JP bought this piece of land a few years ago, before even seeing it! We loved the fact that we are facing a
green belt and no one will ever build in front of us.”
10 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga June 2021

Apart from being a busy mom of
two small children and wife to an
international sporting star, Megan
is also a successful self-made
entrepreneur. We met up with her to
find out about her business, Noa &
Co, which comprises a range of allnatural,
dairy and gluten free collagen
creamers and plant protein powders.
Megan is a born and bred Durban girl
who went to school in Durban North
and completed an honours degree in
business communication. She worked
in marketing for Mr Price before
she and JP moved to Japan in 2013.
The couple spent three years there,
followed by the UK and finally France,
where they had their first daughter.
They moved back to South Africa in
2019.
Although she has always loved sports
and been interested in nutrition,
Megan says her passion for health
and wellness was truly sparked while
living in Japan. “It was honestly the
best three years of my life. I learned
so much about Eastern wellness and
nutrition – and about myself. I was
really lucky to have JP, who was still
also playing for the Springboks at the
time, as my ‘lab rat’,” she laughs. “Not
everyone has a professional, high
performance contact sport athlete
to try and test all their theories on! I
would cut things out of his diet and
add in super foods and collagen and
see how it all worked for him.”
Megan and JP have been together
since they started dating in 2007
when she was just 19 years old. “We
got married in Cape Town in 2015
and I planned our entire wedding
from Japan. It was actually really
easy to choose a date because JP
only had three Saturdays off that
entire year – so we just had to pick
one of them,” she laughs. The couple
spent a number of years travelling
and living together before they
were married. Megan completed
her studies in Japan (flying home
to write exams) and while there she
befriended a nutritionist and together,
they attended wellness talks and
cooking classes. She subsequently
collaborated with her on some of the
formulas that Megan has used for Noa
& Co.
It was JP who encouraged Megan
to realise her dream and start her
own business. “I was always ordering
The Noa & Co products are all natural
and dairy and gluten free
supplements online and became obsessed with clean, healthy eating. JP, who
is also really keen on eating healthily, suggested I start making my own. We had
seen the benefits of collagen while we were in Japan (where it is readily available
almost everywhere), and I thought it would be great to find a way to make it
more accessible and easily incorporate it in to a Western diet. JP had cut out
dairy and so I thought a collagen creamer (dairy alternative) would be a good
idea.”
Megan registered her company in 2017, but only officially launched it when they
moved back to South Africa in 2019. “I tried and tested products from all over the
world and was determined to take the best from each and make a better version,
locally.”
After doing lots of homework and working closely in labs with pharmacists and
doctors, Megan launched her Noa & Co range of three products: a collagen
creamer (dairy replacement) and two multi-source plant-based protein powders
(vanilla and chocolate) with potent probiotics.
She developed and packaged all three products locally and designed everything
herself. Last year when Covid hit, Megan says the product really took off. “I
think people just became more aware of their health and started paying more
attention to what they were putting into their bodies. The most important thing
to me was ensuring that our products are one hundred percent clean, with no
hidden nasties. It’s not easy to make plants taste good without added flavours!”
Megan has kept the range small because she wanted to ensure that everything
was all natural. The chocolate flavour comes from cacao and the vanilla from
vanilla pods.
Mostly, Megan says, the products are there to help out where needed without
replacing ‘real food’ in any way. “I strongly believe in eating real food and not
cutting things out. If you do want to eliminate dairy though, the collagen
creamer is a good alternative, and if you need a boost, miss a meal or need some
added protein in your diet, the protein powders are great.”
Asked what kind of diet she and JP follow, Megan says they try to keep it as
balanced and sustainable as possible. “We keep things simple, try not to have too
much dairy and gluten and eat as many plants as possible.”
Creative collaboration
Life is so full of challenges and hardships these days, one could argue that art and
storytelling are more important to society than ever before. Award-winning North
Coast author Dianne Stewart recently launched a short story collection and used a
painting by acclaimed Ballito artist Jane Digby for the cover.
rt, they say, influences
society by changing
opinions, instilling
values and translating
experiences. It’s
a means of
communication,
allowing people from different
cultures to connect through images
and stories.
How fortunate we are then, to have
a wide array of skilled and talented
artists, ranging from painters and
sculptors to writers, dancers, singers
and actors, living right here on the
North Coast.
In her newly released book, Nuances
(a collection of short stories), Dianne
combines her skills and expertise with
artist Jane’s in a beautiful, meaningful
way.
An author, lecturer and academic,
Dianne has written over 40 books for
both adults and children. Not only
have her short stories been included
in a literary journal, but one of them,
Ballito artist Jane Digby (left)
and author Dianne Stewart
The Crash, has been prescribed in the education system in
both South Africa and Namibia.
It was during lockdown last year that she compiled her
collection of short stories for Nuances.
“A book is a collaborative effort. When I needed to source
a cover, I remembered a beautiful abstract oil painting I
saw at Jane’s solo exhibition at Simbithi Estate in 2019. The
painting was called Abstract Thorns 11.”
Jane has been an artist for over 24 years and is well
known both locally and internationally for her exquisite
portraiture and atmospheric landscapes. She prides herself
on creating works that she says ‘begin a dialogue between
artist, painting and viewer’. “My artworks are a cultural
dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks
such as personal and cultural identity, family, community,
nationality and a journey with my own physicality and
spirituality,” says Jane.
Having exhibited in the UK and around South Africa for a
number of years, Jane participated in the XIIth Florence
Biennale in Italy and hosted two solo exhibitions in 2019.
Both her solo exhibitions, she says, were about celebrating
life and ‘living in the now’.
Last year was an exciting one for Jane, when she got
the opportunity to own, manage and curate the 800m²
pop-up gallery at the Lifestyle Centre Ballito over a threemonth
period. Here Jane exhibited over 30 of her own
artworks as well as work from over 120 other artists.
According to Dianne, the book cover designer skilfully
adapted Jane’s painting to form the front cover and back
cover for Nuances. “It’s such a privilege to have Jane’s
superb oil painting as a cover for this short story collection.
It also synchronizes well with the title and content of the
short stories.”
Dianne says she especially loves writing short stories,
because they can be read in one sitting. Nuances is a
collection of stories reflecting significant moments and
events in the character’s lives.
The introduction was written by Professor Lindy Stiebel
of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. “I first met Prof Stiebel
when she co-authored a definitive work on literary trails,
including one for the North Coast, called A Literary Guide
to KwaZulu-Natal. When the short story text was complete,
I asked Professor Stiebel to write the introduction for
Nuances. It’s such an honour to have collaborated with
these two amazing experts, academic Lindy and talented
artist, Jane,” says Dianne.
Creating immortal art
Former Ballito artist Jacqui
Scheffer has been chosen
as one of 60 artists from
around the world to take
part in a remarkable one-ofa-kind
project in Italy called
‘Timeless Immortal Art’.
Text: Leah Shone
The concept is really quite wonderful.
A group of artists are collaborating to
create a type of ‘open-air’ museum in a
small city in Sicily. There will no longer
be plaques on the walls indicating the
street names, but rather sixty works
of art painted on terracotta tiles by
artists from around the world.
Mother of two and former Ballito
resident Jacqui is one of these artists.
“This has been like an unexpected gift
from the universe. What a beautiful
concept, immortality of an artist and
how, during these tough times, art
can reunite. It is an absolute privilege
and I am so humbled and honoured
to be a part of this project.”
Born in Limpopo, 40-year-old Jacqui
has two children and recently
relocated to Cape Town. She and her
family spent more than 10 years living
in Ballito. A self-dubbed ‘dreamer with
her head in the clouds most of the
time’, Jacqui first discovered her love
for art when she found her mother’s
oil paint in the garage at the age of
10. “Not really knowing how to use
the oil paint, I made more of mess
than a piece of art, but I loved every
moment of it. A few years later, my
art teacher at school taught me a
valuable lesson I have never forgotten.
I had been painting a piece for a few
days and she walked past me and
pushed my arm forward while I was
painting! Swish went the brush over
the canvas! I was so upset. She just
smiled at me and said, ‘stop being so
afraid of making a mistake, you can
never be wrong in art, let it flow’. It
was an absolutely freeing experience
for me that changed my perception
of art forever.”
After studying photography and graphic design at Stellenbosch
Jacqui became involved in the teaching side of things, writing a
photography curriculum to be used as an extra curriculum subject at
schools. While living in Ballito she opened an art shop, which she had
to close down because it was too quiet out of season, and then learnt
how to do tattoos and opened a tattoo studio in her home town of
Bela Bela. “My shop burned down though and it was a hard place to
stand up from. I got a job teaching in Beijing and during this time
I met my partner, Gianluca, who encouraged me to start painting
again. Soon I had my first exhibition in Cape Town, where I sold only
two or three paintings and a few photographs. We started marketing
my paintings in Italy and I sold all of them.”
While in Italy Jacqui meet renowned artist Walter Tacchini who
subsequently invited her to exhibit some of her work with his in Italy
in July this year. It’s not easy to exhibit your work in South Africa,
Jacqui says, and she’s had to learn to be adaptable. “I started printing
my paintings on fabric, making handbags, pillows and lampshades.
My first commission came from Brett, Mozambik restaurant owner in
Ballito. He ordered lampshades and pillows for one of his shops from
me. I have also learned to market myself and make connections in
the art industry online, which is how I ended up being invited to join
the Sicily project.”
Jacqui tells us a bit about the painting she has submitted to the
project, called ‘Eclipse of the Soul’. “It articulates the moon and sun,
representing time, hope and dreams. The moon affects our emotional
tides like the sea, but it also creates time to dream, meditate, moralize
and philosophize about life. The sun represents hope - every day is
a new beginning and a blessing. The woman looking up for answers
is trying to understand what this short period of life is all about. We
are all too unique and our conscious minds too fast to just struggle,
hurt, learn, dream, love, create and then die. We
are all connected on this earth. Life is such a crazy
thing, filled with the unexpected. There is so much
beauty, if you can change your mindset. We tend
to focus on pain and negative things. I guess it is
human nature.”
We asked Jacqui what advice she would give to
other aspiring artists. “You are stronger than you
think. Life is moulding you into the best that you
can be. It is not easy but it’s worth it. Like Andy
Warhol said, ‘Don’t think about making art, just get
it done. Let everyone else decided if it’s good or
bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are
deciding, make even more art. It’s your soul’s song.’”
Paddling duo!
It’s not every day that a father and son are crowned national champions simultaneously.
Mount Edgecombe resident Herman and his 83-year-old Umhlanga father Paul Chalupsky
were recently named national surf ski champions in their respective age groups, qualifying
for the surfski world champs set to take place in Spain this month.
Text: Leah Shone
The Chalupskys are a remarkable
family and certainly no strangers to
the surfski world. Paul was the very
first Springbok team captain in the
early 1960’s and has been the SA
canoeing champion on numerous
occasions over the years in all three
disciplines – marathon, sprint and
downriver paddling.
Herman followed suit, getting
Springbok colours for canoeing, surf
lifesaving, surfski paddling and was
a junior water polo Springbok. His
brother Oscar is also one of the top
surfski paddlers in the world.
In their most recent challenge, Paul
and Herman took on the 28 km
paddle in a 10-knot easterly wind,
which, apparently, was a breeze for
the duo! “The stronger the wind the better we go. I just love the excitement of
paddling with a big swell sometimes 3km out to sea. Then it’s just you and the
vast ocean,” says Herman, who finished in the top 20 overall on the day.
Paul (who still trains in the open ocean on most mornings at the age of 83!) lives
in the Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate where he and Herman do a lot
of training in the dam. They have even initiated an ‘informal dice’ once a week,
where paddlers of all strengths come and train.
“We are really lucky to have such great facilities on our doorstep to help with
training. Pani Dam is the ideal paddling venue as it is just down the road. I also
run on the golf course, but not too often as my legs are made for paddling,”
laughs Herman.
Asked what their top paddling highlights over the years are, Herman says, “we
both won the Berg River marathon in the Cape (about 20 years apart) and my
father and his partner won the Sella marathon in Spain, which is the biggest,
most prestigious canoe race in the world. Twenty years later my brother Oscar
and I won the race as well.”
It is clear that Paul has inspired his sons to strive towards greatness and to
continue training hard throughout their lives. And, of course, to make sure they
are having fun while they are doing it!
LUCKY dad!
Let’s be honest. He does so much for us … and we don’t always show
our appreciation as much as we should. So this year we’re going all
Whiskey to travel bags to softest ever after-shower towels … here’s
We’re giving away everything on this page to one lucky dad.
Raise your glass to dad with Bannermans Scotch Whisky. Beautifully fruity flavours to enjoy neat,
on the rocks or mixed. It’s made using older, more aged malt whisky, with a blend of exceptional five
to six-year-old whiskies, which gives it a bolder, more complex flavour than other blends and helps
create its wonderfully smooth, rich character. R199. Details: takealot.com
Sexton Irish Whiskey is a new and unexpected single malt. Rich in hue, approachable in taste and
memorable in character, it’s made from 100 per cent Irish malted barley that is triple distilled in
copper pot stills for smoothness. The finish is a perfect balance of dried fruits and subtle oak notes
and aromas of nuts and dark chocolate followed by marzipan, spice and fruit with a mellow honeyed
taste of malt and oils. The rich, sophisticated liquid is matched by its striking, hexagonal dark bottle.
Dad may not make it to The Med this year, but he can take in the very essenza dell’ Italia with Ginato
Italian Gin. A sunshine-drenched way of life distilled in a bottle. It combines the finest quality
produce from world-renowned terroir … think juniper berries from Tuscany, citrus bursting with
Southern Italy’s unique Mediterranean sweetness, and Italian grapes grown alongside northern Italy’s
idyllic lakes. Mix these and you get the very spirito d’Italia. Details: takealot.com. To mix … we use
TOP TIPS
for those starting their running journey
In 1976, Bruce Fordyce was a young
student at Wits University in Joburg,
and against a background of the
country being in the grip of apartheid,
isolated from the rest of the world
and with revolution in the air, decided
he needed to take control of his
life and give himself a purpose. He
challenged himself to run SA’s most
famous long-distance race, the 90km
Comrades Marathon. A gruelling race,
and one he would go on to win five
years later, and eight more times after
that, too, arguably making him one of
the greatest Comrades runners in the
history of the race.
He went on to win so much more …
the famous London to Brighton three
times, setting the world record in 1983
which stood for more than 30 years, the
100km Challenge race in Stellenbosch
in 1989 (another world record!), the
State President’s Gold Award for Sport
from Nelson Mandela in 1997. He’s also
launched the Parkrun concept in SA
– with close on 200 Saturday morning
5km free timed runs and more than
one million registered members.
Bruce still runs – although now with
a dodgy knee, saying he estimates
he’s run well over 200 000km in his
life. His latest achievement … Winged
Messenger – a guide, written in the
first person, aimed at other keen
runners, but specifically novices, which
includes his personal 1976/77 training
diary (right from his very first jog
around the Wits rugby field on June
8, 1976) as well as anecdotes from the
time he spent training for that first race.
10 tips from the king of Comrades, Bruce Fordyce
1 CONSISTENCY: Nothing improves our running more than consistent regular
running. Regular running, (more than four times a week) builds a wonderful
foundation from which to build even greater fitness.
2 QUALITY: Always choose quality over quantity. While (L.S.D) long slow distance
still helps, really sharp fitness is improved by running faster or by running hilly
courses. Try and run a speed or hill session at least once a week.
3 LOGBOOK: Keep a logbook/training diary. I started recording my running
from the first day (a 10-minute jog around the Wits university rugby fields, June
8th 1976). Logbooks serve as a wonderful source of reference, and a source of
guidance for the future.
4 COACH: Once we start to get serious, it is advisable to find a reliable and
trustworthy coach. I have one regret from my early running days and that is that I
was self-coached. I made too many mistakes. A coach would have helped a lot.
5 INJURIES: Every runner gets injured from time to time. It takes great maturity
to admit that we are injured and that our aching calf muscle is not just a minor
niggle. Confront an injury head-on and find a good doctor or physiotherapist to
help correct the problem.
6 DESPERATELYKEENTITIS: Understand that injuries are not mysterious ‘acts of
God’. They don’t just happen. We get injured because we push our bodies too
hard. We catch an enthusiasm disease which I have named ‘desperatelykeentitis’.
This enthusiasm drives us to do too much, too soon, too fast and too frequently.
The only cure for desperatelykeentitis is to try and blunt the enthusiasm. Creating
a fit runner takes time and patience, rather like the process of creating a really
fine wine.
7 REST: For many runners, rest is a four-letter swear word. But rest and recovery
are the stepping stones to increased fitness. Never be afraid to have an easy day
or even to take a day off running
8 GOOD SHOES: We runners are fortunate in that our sport is relatively cheap.
However, it is worth investing in a good pair of running shoes. For the correct
advice I always go to a specialist running store. I may pay a little extra but
the advice I receive is invaluable.
9 TRAIN WITH FRIENDS: Our sport is a social sport and we need the company of
friends. And besides, shared discipline is a lot easier than individual discipline.
10 DON’T OVERRACE: Training builds our fitness, racing breaks us down. Too
many of us want to run marathons and long-distance races as often as possible.
The world’s most successful champions are very selective in their racing. They
choose two or three major races a year and peak specifically for those events.
Go getter dads
The juggle between balancing a successful career and spending quality time with your
family (while finding the odd moment to catch some fish or play a round of golf!) is a
real one. We’ve rounded up some of the hardest-working go getter North Coast dads!
GRANT GAVIN - RE/MAX Panache
Grant is the owner of RE/MAX Panache, a real estate agency with 65
estate agents selling over R1 Billion residential homes North of Durban
annually. He is also a speaker and an NLP Coach. “I help people remove
their own limiting beliefs so that they can get on with fulfilling their
potential in life.” How do you balance fatherhood and work? When
my kids are with me they are my priority and everyone in my business
is aware of this. When your priorities are clear, your time planning
becomes easier because you plan everything else around your priority.
Having a great support team at the office helps massively in this regard.
What is the best piece of fathering advice you’ve received? Children
are meant to be seen and heard. Quite the opposite to the old belief.
Kids are incredible teachers if you just allow them to speak. They have no
filters when they are young and see things exactly as they are. Observe
wisely. Details: www.grantgavin.com, 082 458 4083, info@grantgavin.com
NIC JORDAN – Fairview Estates
Nic Jordan is the owner and founder of Holla Trails, Living Earth Compost and
Instant Lawn and Nyathi Sugar (a sugar farm operation). He is more recently, one
of the founding farmers at Fairview Estates (a pioneering secure farming and living
estate just outside Ballito). How do you balance fatherhood and work? It’s an
ongoing challenge. I am generally strict about booking slots in my diary that are
non-negotiable and I prioritise quality time with my children over work. That and
only employing exceptionally capable staff who run my businesses with me give
me the benefit of flexi time, which is one of the special perks of running one’s own
business. What is the best piece of fathering advice you’ve received? To never
criticise or judge my children, or tell my children not to do something when they
have revealed they are doing things which I would rather they did not. I rather
share experiences I have had with similar situations as well as the risks and what to
Barbering’s new-found popularity, and an appreciation for traditional
grooming products, has seen the revival of hair tonics … a product
that’s been associated with old-school barbering for more than a
century. For a while, they’ve been overlooked for more modern
alternatives … but they’re back. And for good reason. These
no-gimmick, energising elixirs help to reinvigorate the scalp, provide
vigour and freshness, promote a natural shine and offer a light hold
to help set and define simple styles. They help to protect your hair
from heat during blow-dry styling and, when massaged intensely into
the scalp, help to condition and moisturise the hair while stimulating
circulation. The effects of this pampering session are sleek and healthy
locks, less dandruff, and repaired split ends. The light hold created by
these luscious liquids also makes hair easier to work with for
professionals and can create the vital foundation needed to build
extravagant hairstyles. The Bluebeards Revenge Hair Tonics,
available in the brand’s iconic Classic and Cuban scents, also grant
their users with hair that smells irresistible … the classic has a sweet,
modern, barbershop-inspired fragrance, the Cuban packs a punchy
exotic scent – the perfect combo of British barbering and Caribbean
cheer. R310 from Sorbet MAN stores.
A sporting inspiration
We love celebrating North Coasters who have been recognised on a national platform!
Ballito netball star and teacher Danelle (Dani) van der Linde was recently named the
KZN netball sportswoman of the year. We found out a bit more about her.
Ambitious, driven and always super
active, Dani does not have an ‘off’ button.
Even when she’s relaxing, she says, she’s
usually doing something physical.
“My family and friends will tell you the
words ‘downtime’ and Dani do not go
together,” she laughs. “My downtime still
includes being as active as possible. I
enjoy trail running and mountain biking
at Holla Trails and you will find me most
content when I am visiting my aunt and
uncle on their farm, where I’m usually
horse riding, swimming in the waterfall
and doing more mountain biking and
running ... with the occasional sleep-in!
Originally from Wartburg in the KZN
Midlands, 23-year-old Dani moved to
the North Coast with her family in 2007.
She attended Umhlali Preparatory and
matriculated from Ashton International
College in Ballito. She is currently
completing a degree in foundation
phase teaching while working full time
as a Grade R teacher’s assistant and
coach at Ashton.
Dani has always been sporty. “I have a competitive nature and
have always strived to do and be better in sport.
I enjoy being outdoors and being part of a team and sport
offers me both of those.”
When we asked her to share some of her top sporting
achievements thus far, Dani says, “that’s a hard question to
answer because my father would say that if it didn’t happen in
the last three months it’s immaterial!”
Throughout school she was part of the KZN Outdoor Netball,
KZN Action Netball and KZN Outdoor Hockey teams. Her high
point during this time, she says, was being chosen to be part
of the SA U17 and U18 Mixed Action Netball Team, where she
travelled to Australia on two separate occasions to compete in
the Tri Nations.
Since completing high school in 2016, she has been on the
KZN Netball team in various age groups and her highlight was
being selected for the Kingdom Stars Netball Team.
“It was such a great honour to receive KZN Netball
Sportswoman of the year award, especially after a tough few
months of no sport due to Covid. It was a great reminder that
with hard work and dedication nothing is impossible.”
Despite her busy schedule, Dani still manages to train twice a
day, mornings and evenings. My ‘happy hour’ since 2011 has
been training at Ringside Boxing Gym with Tyron Koen and the
team who have played a major role in keeping me in shape
and at peak performance. I am also being looked after by Prime
Human Performance Institute at the Moses Mabhiba Stadium
as part of the Elite Athletes Development Program. They have
played an essential role in my rehabilitation from injuries and
overall conditioning.”
Dani is also currently part of the Impis Ladies Club Hockey
Team and Gilbert Netball Stars Club Team, adding to her overall
training.
Her ultimate current sporting goal, Dani says, is to represent her
country one day. And her advice to young, aspiring athletes is
simple: “You don’t have to be extreme, just be consistent. Like
Craig Groeschel said, ‘successful people do consistently what
normal people do occasionally.’ Most importantly, the quote I
live by is, “Winners never quit and quitters never win.’”
Winning styles!
There is no better feeling
than being recognized
and awarded for your
hard work and skill,
especially when it’s for
doing something you love.
Ballito hair stylist Justen
Laubscher recently won a
prestigious national award
and is sharing this season’s
tips and trends with us.
Text: Leah Shone
Despite only living in the area for
four years, Justen, or Jay as he’s
affectionately known, has become a
well-known, popular hair stylist in the
Dolphin Coast community.
The bubbly and full-of-fun stylist, who
has been doing hair since he was
16 years old, recently took first place
in the Game of Wella 2020 Balayage
Colour competition, beating over
5000 other entrants and winning the
title of Wella Colour Specialist 2020.
Clearly passionate about what he
does, Justen has worked around the
world in places like in Ireland and
Spain and on international cruise
liners, and spent a large part of his life
in England where he worked with top
stylists like TONI&GUY, Keith Graham
and Zico Yarney, among others. His
older brother Jimmi, who lives in Cape
Town, is also a hair stylist. He inspired
Justen to follow the same career and
contributed a great deal to the stylist
he is today.
Justen made the decision to move to
KZN from Johannesburg eight years
ago and has been living in Ballito for
the last four years.
“It was a big change and starting from
scratch wasn’t easy, but the people of
Ballito were friendly and welcoming
and embraced us. I knew this was the
perfect family town to raise my daughter Jagger who is 3 years old.”
Justen opened The Hair Shack at The Sage Centre when fellow stylist Charles
Coelho (who has been in the hair industry for over 40 years) suggested they
team up. The salon opened in September 2020.
It was a brave move opening a salon during level 3 lockdown, just two months
after restrictions on the trading in salons had been lifted, but the veteran stylists
decided to give it a go anyway. And it paid off! “The people in Ballito are truly
genuine, caring and supportive and many of my clients have become good
friends. The Dolphin Coast is an awesome place and the sense of community
here is fantastic.”
The national colour competition was open to any and all stylists and salons,
including non-Wella salons, who were provided with Wella professional products
to level the playing field so they could enter the competition. Justen’s prizes
include a trip worth R35 000 to Grand Canaria off the coast of Spain, and
R15 000 worth of Wella professional stock for The Hair Shack. While the
competition usually sees all the stylists gathering at a large convention centre
with judges monitoring their work on models, last year’s competition was a little
different due to Covid. Instead, the competition was run online and entrants had
to submit one ‘before’ and one ‘after’ photo.
Justen is elated to have been chosen as the overall winner. “It hasn’t been the
easiest road, considering Covid and the usual teething problems when opening
a new business, but it wouldn’t be possible without our phenomenal clients who
make every bit of hard work worth it and remind you why you love what you do.”
Justen’s winter 2021 hair trends
Colour:
* Rich copper and rose gold browns
* Pink and peach tones and pastel shades
* Golden blondes
* For the daring – cool ash tones (think silver and
purple)
* Balayage and root smudges are still a firm favourite
* Recycling colour (working with a client’s existing
colour and incorporating just a little bit of new
colour to create a new look!)
Cut trends:
* Pixie cuts which are soft on the outline
* Solid lines with lots of texture throughout
* Strong fringes and soft Russian (aka curtain or
French) bangs
* Bobs and lobs
* Natural locks, curls and waves
General trends:
Natural is a winner! Clients are giving their hair a
break from intense chemical processes and rather
opting for demi-permanent toners and rinses
and/or rich, nourishing treatments to combat the
feeling of dry hair which naturally happens as we
transition from summer to autumn and winter.
Clients are also embracing the natural texture
and curl of their hair rather than straightening it
chemically or mechanically. Rather use leave-in
curling or smoothing product to allow your hair to
set naturally (much easier to do on the coast now
that it’s less humid!).
Brave little fighter
Finding out at that your child has a life-threatening disease is undoubtedly every
parent’s biggest fear. This month, in honour of Cancer Survivor’s Day on 6 June, we
spoke to a Ballito mom whose brave little three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with
leukaemia just nine months ago.
Text: Leah Shone
Like for most of us, the Bam family’s
life was turned upside down when
hard lockdown was implemented in
March last year. A month later though,
mom and dad Alichia and Hennie
started noticing something usual
about their two-and-a-half-year-old
daughter Payton.
She was always tired and lethargic
and started getting unexplained
fevers with no other symptoms.
Around June last year she started
developing blue bruises in unusual
places, like on her back. Worried, they
took her to their family doctor. “He
did routine blood tests and phoned
us as soon as he got the results. He
said something was not right and her
haemoglobin levels were very low.”
The couple were immediately referred
to a haematologist and oncologist.
The doctor told them over the phone
that he suspected she may have
leukaemia. “It was very surreal and I
honestly thought they had made a
mistake and were just reading the
blood results wrong. There was no
way my child could have cancer.”
Mom and daughter arrived at
Parklands hospital that day (a
Saturday) and Alichia says it was a
mad rush. “It was all so rushed and
I had no idea what was going on.
Everyone was talking around me and
they were poking and testing Payton.
It was chaotic.” It was only later that
night that they understood what was
actually going on. “They told us that
Payton had been going into heart
failure. Her heart was beating much
too fast and her haemoglobin levels
were dangerously low. She could’ve
died that day.”
Little Payton received her first blood
transfusion that night and Alichia
says there was an almost immediate
improvement. Two days later she
started chemotherapy. “Those
first days were hard. She was going through so much and, because of Covid
regulations, my husband couldn’t be with us, so I was all alone. I cried for four
days, but I knew I had to be strong for her. Then I prayed, found my strength and
didn’t cry again.”
At the end of August Payton underwent a bone marrow aspiration and her
cancer is now officially in remission. She started a ‘maintenance programme’ in
April this year, which sees her going for a chemotherapy injection once a month
and a lumbar puncture every three months for two years.
“Payton is incredibly strong and has handled everything so bravely,” says proud
Alichia. “Our son, Nathan, is eight years old. It’s been really hard for him too, but
he’s also been incredibly strong and brave.”
As if fighting cancer isn’t hard enough, it’s been even more challenging for the
Bam family because of Covid. “I’m very lucky to work for my husband, otherwise
I think I definitely would’ve lost my job by now. I’ve been in the hospital more in
the last nine months than I’ve been at home. When I look back though, this past
year seems to have gone really quickly. I think it’s because we’ve gone through
so much in such a short time. We have our hard days, but we have been blessed
with lots of support.”
Alichia says both the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer and Happy Bundles
organisations have been incredible with giving little Payton gifts and bringing a
smile to her face and their friends and family have offered them lots of love and
support.
Kids with Cancer
“Anyone can get leukaemia, but it does affect a lot of children. Generally, the
younger they are the better their chance of recovery. Kids under 10 years old
have about an 85% recovery rate. I would encourage parents to keep an eye
on their kids and have them checked out if they notice any of the warning
signs, like tiredness and lack of energy, unexplained fevers and unusual
bruising. Just a simple blood test can clear up any concern. To other parents
going through something similar, I would just encourage you to pray, have
faith and be strong for your child. If you are sad, they can feel it. You have to be
brave for them.”
Flavours of Italy
If the quaint, red and white checked tablecloths and handwritten chalkboard menus
don’t give it away, the name of this beautiful new restaurant and deli certainly will…
When you say it out loud, you can’t
help but do so with a hint of an
accent. It’s a beautiful Italian word that
flows off your tongue … Abbiocco.
The word, which is also the name
of Burnedale Farm’s delightful new,
alfresco pasta bar and deli, means
‘the sleepy feeling you get after a big
meal’. Owner Coenie Kruger describes
it as ‘a carb coma’. This may be our
new favourite word.
With more than 20 years of restaurant
experience behind them, Coenie
and partner Johan Hurter opened
Abbiocco just over a month ago after
moving to Ballito from Cape Town.
Coenie, who takes on the role of head
chef, is passionate about serving
authentic Italian food. He started
his culinary career working for and
learning from an Italian chef at a small
restaurant in Wynberg in Cape Town.
Coenie and Johan eventually bought
the restaurant and ran it for the next
eight years, with Johan overseeing the
front of house (and whipping up the
odd delicious desert!).
From there they took on a slightly
bigger challenge, opening a guest
house and restaurant in Riebeeck
Kasteel, north of Cape Town. This
became their passion project, which
they lovingly owned and ran for the
next 13 years. When they took a trip to
Thailand on holiday at the beginning
of last year though, they had no idea
what would unfold. Lockdown was
imposed while they were away and
they ended up being stuck in Thailand
for the next nine weeks. They had to
close the restaurant and guest house.
“We’ve been coming to Ballito on holiday for a few years now, and every time we
came, we fell more in love with it. When we came down in November last year
we decided to stay. The area has grown, the climate here is wonderful and we’ve
always wanted to live near the ocean.”
While looking for a premises to open a restaurant, someone suggested they have
a look at Burnedale. There were two shop spaces available next to each other
and it was perfect for what they were looking for.
Abbiocco is all about classic, Italian flavours and ingredients. The alfresco seating
area, surrounded by trees and greenery, provides the perfect backdrop to enjoy a
delicious bowl of homemade pasta and a good glass of wine. The menu, which is
written up on the chalkboards daily, usually comprises an Antipasti Platter (which
allows you to taste a variety of authentic Italian items) and a selection of pasta
dishes (think tagliatelle with pulled short rib, gnocchi with spinach and ricotta
and traditional beef lasagne – all made from scratch each day). Their signature
Osso Buco and Melanzane dishes are both must-tries! They even make their own
ice cream, with fabulous flavours like Blueberry and Peanut Butter (and you can
buy tubs to take home!).
traditional Italian deli goods and decorated with
beautiful pieces they’ve collected over the years. The
cold deli range, which Coenie says has been very
popular has a selection of cold cuts (sourced from a
local charcuterie), cheeses and homemade pestos
and mayos. They also have fabulous to-go pastas and
salads, artichokes in olive oil and an assortment of hand
selected condiments, pastas, truffle oils, cordials and
coffee.
Another exciting (and already very popular) offering is
their ‘Long Table Feasts’. This is a dining concept where
a group of people can come together to celebrate a
special occasion (or just enjoy a foodie evening out)
and enjoy a four-course classic Italian meal. Tables are
limited to 12 in winter, but will able to be bigger in
summer when you sit outside, and the evening includes
canapes on arrival and Groote Post wine on the table.
The best part is that the entire menu is a secret – so you
don’t know what you are getting until each course is
served! The Long Table Feast is R495 per person.
Artichoke Pasta in a Creamy
Napoletana and Basil Pesto Sauce
Serves 2
You’ll need: 200g fresh tagliatelle or spaghetti
(available fresh from the Abbiocco deli or your
own dried pasta); 400ml cooked napoletana
sauce, 200ml fresh cream, 2 tablespoons
basil pesto, salt and pepper to taste, 6 whole
artichokes (3 sliced), 50g - 80g freshly grated
parmesan, Italian parsley for garnish.
To make: Cook your tomato sauce and add
the pesto and cream. Cook your fresh pasta
in salty water until ready. Add the sliced-up
artichokes to the sauce and mix through. Your
pasta can now be added (after you strained it)
and mixed through your sauce delicately. Plate
your pasta and top with a whole artichoke,
grated parmesan and chopped Italian parsley.
What’s cooking
good looking ...
Annatjie Melck, foodie
legend and chatelaine of
Muratie, has a treasure
trove of her own very
special recipes and loves
to explore the very best
pairings with Muratie’s
wines. This one, for us,
is a winner.
Every wine tells a story
at Muratie, the historic
Stellenbosch Estate that dates
back to 1685. In the case of
Muratie Mr May Grenache
Noir 2018, the story is of
Cornelius, or Mr May as he
was affectionately called,
who planted and pruned
many a vine at the estate,
and whose attention
to detail and ability to
predict the weather, long
before technology, is
legendary. ‘He taught us
that whenever we saw a
silver cloud lying on the
south-west-facing side of
Simonsberg mountain,
it would rain in two
days' time. Today still,
in memoriam, we have
yet to prove him wrong',
says Rijk Melck. The wine,
aged in French Oak
barrels for 18 months,
is all raspberries and
pomegranate rubies, and
a hint of white pepper
spice. It’s R230 and you
can order online from
Annatjie’s marrow bones on toast
So easy, so quick, and amazingly tasty. This works as well for a
dinner party starter as it does for snacks around the braai or a
Sunday night don’t-feel-like-cooking dinner.
Ingredients:
You need the middle sections of the long bones (ask your
butcher for 5cm lengths); salt and freshly ground black
pepper to taste; toast
To make:
Preheat the oven to 230˚C
Rinse the marrow bones thoroughly under cold water, and
dry well with kitchen paper towel. Cover an oven pan with
foil and place marrow bones on top.
Sprinkle salt and pepper over the bones and bake for 15 to
20 minutes.
Marrow bones are cooked when the marrow starts pulling
away from the bone and the clear fat starts to drip from
the bone.
Remove pan from the oven and let it cool down slightly.
Use a knife to remove the marrow from the bones and
spread on the toast. Add a little salt according to your
liking and serve immediately, with a glass of Muratie’s
Mr May Grenache Noir.
down through the generations and
hold special pride of place in our
homes. We have inherited furniture,
antiques and china from countries
around the world and especially
the East. The inheritance of these
beautiful pieces comes with a
responsibility to showcase them in a
meaningful way and to also merge
them with the contemporary design
focus of our times. Our own travels
to the East combined with our family
heirlooms ignited our love of mixing
vintage art and Eastern influence into
our décor.
Tell us about your inspiration behind
starting Malabar Hill Collections,
especially during a pandemic.
We realised with the onset of
Covid and lockdown that people’s
homes were going to take on more
importance in terms of creating a
sanctuary. It was during the lockdown
that we began sourcing products
and fell in love with our vintage
collection of Japanese geisha and
Chinese ancestor paintings. Our
print collection dates back to the
12th to 19th century and the original
paintings are found in museums and
art galleries around the world. Our
brand speaks of the appreciation of
classical art and unusual décor pieces
and honouring them by integrating
them into modern or contemporary
décor.
Tell us a bit about your very popular print collections.
We were very excited when we sourced our Oriental Art Collection. Our aim
was to reinvent and honour these paintings by printing them onto high quality
oversized canvas in floating frames or on archival paper framed under glass and
juxtapose them in the modern décor context. After sourcing our Japanese and
Chinese collections, we added a vintage Birds of a Feather collection and a Parrot
collection. The idea is to combine these classical artworks with contemporary
furniture to achieve a modern look that could be both edgy or classical
depending on styling.
Please share your top tips on how to achieve this look:
• Juxtapose vintage art with a Le Corbusier chaise longue or a mid-century sofa.
• Place an oversize canvas of a beautiful Japanese Geisha over a bathtub to add
drama and personality to an otherwise cold empty space.
• Create a balance between old and new by adding a vintage painting to a very
contemporary setting so it jolts the eye.
• The colours of the artwork can become the inspiration for the colour scheme of
the room.
• An intricately painted vintage print in a neutral backdrop adds drama.
Veggie of the month
Kale Storm is a Winter superfood that is rich in vitamin C and iron. A colourful
mix of three different kale varieties with purple, green and blue leaves, each
with different textures, it really is almost too pretty to eat. The ready-to-eat
mix comes in a 17cm pot and doesn’t need to be planted out. Simply keep
the kale in its pot, place it in a position that receives at least four hours of sun
a day, water daily and feed with a nitrogen-rich liquid fertiliser at half strength
every two weeks. Plants grow up to 60cm and can be treated like spinach by
harvesting the outer leaves. Kale ‘Storm’ lasts longer in your patio planter than
lettuce and it won’t bolt, and can also be planted in the ground for all-season
harvesting. To prepare kale for cooking, cut out the midrib, shred the leaves and
cook like spinach. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Garden tasks for June
• Feed Winter flowering annuals with liquid fertiliser. • Remove dead
blooms of calendulas, sweet peas, pansies, and Iceland poppies to
encourage new flowers. • Tidy up perennials, shrubs, and trees by
removing dead leaves and old flowers. • Do not let daffodils and other
Spring-flowering bulbs or shrubs, like azaleas, camellias or magnolias dry
out otherwise they will not flower. • Water Winter pot plants like cyclamen,
pot primulas, cineraria, and spring bulbs
every two to three days and feed with a
liquid fertiliser. • This is the best month
for transplanting roses, other perennials,
shrubs and even trees that are in the
wrong position. • Use all your
garden waste to make compost
Indoor plant
of the month
Monstera adansonii –
also known as monkey
mask – is a smaller, and
slower-growing version of
the traditional delicious
monster (Monstera
deliciosa). The unusually
lobed leaves gave rise to
its common name and, although
smaller in size, it certainly makes a big
impact. It trails or climbs, being suitable for
hanging baskets, to fill a corner or cascade
down from a shelf. Being a tropical plant,
it needs a warm, humid room, and bright
indirect light but not sun on its leaves.
Place it a metre or so from a north or eastfacing
window. Water once a week, don’t
let the soil dry out but keep it slightly
moist. A drench and drain once a week
will flush out any salts that build up. Feed
with a liquid fertiliser at half strength once
a month in Spring and Summer to maintain
the bright green, healthy leaves. Yellowing
leaves is a sign that the plant lacks nutrients.
Young super star
She’s passionate about wildlife, photography and travelling and was recently
announced as the top student in the world for two of her subjects. Meet Grade 11
Ashton International College pupil Danielle Boshoff.
It’s one thing being named as the
top student in your school, or even
the province, but it’s pretty amazing
being named as the top student in
the world!
Danielle, who achieved a remarkable
99% for Afrikaans as a second
language and 98% for Physical
Science, was recently announced as
one of the top 2020 Cambridge IGCSE
students and first in the world for
these two subjects. Pretty impressive,
especially considering over 140
countries and 4500 schools wrote the
examinations. We caught up with this
ambitious, driven Grade 11 pupil.
Please tell us a bit about yourself
and your family.
I grew up in Johannesburg and
currently live with my father and
have three much older half-brothers.
Growing up we spent a lot of time
travelling as a family and spent many
weekends and holidays on our private
game farm. We relocated to Ballito in
2016.
Have you always been a high
achiever at school? And how does
it feel to achieved first place in the
world?
I’ve always been academically
inclined. From a young age I’ve always
put a lot of effort into my school
work and I have been awarded many
prizes and accolades. It’s honestly
unbelievable and I was so shocked
when I found out. It’s amazing
knowing that all my hard work paid
off.
What do you put your excellent
results down to?
Working hard consistently throughout
the year and never procrastinating.
For every task I have to do or test I
have to write, I put in my best effort.
I also put in a lot of extra time in
preparation before exams, doing
countless past papers and studying
hard. I am very fortunate that Ashton has excellent, specialized Cambridge
teachers who were available to teach me, to guide me and to prepare me for the
exams.
What is your career dream?
I’m still not completely sure but I really like the idea of becoming a wildlife
veterinarian. I grew up surrounded by animals and I have developed a passion for
them.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I really enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking and being in nature. I love wildlife
photography and travelling is another thing I really enjoy! I enjoy cooking,
dancing and reading.
What would your advice be to kids who are about to start their exams?
It is crucial to revise the morning before the exam. Waking up early and going
over all the content after studying really helps you to remember the work and
maybe pick up on small details you might have missed. The information will be
fresh in your mind when you start writing.
First moments captured
One of the biggest trends across the globe is birth photography. Parents all over the
world are hiring professional photographers to capture those precious moments during
childbirth so that they can focus on the important tasks at hand. We sat down with
Durban’s first accredited birth photographer, Darian Ryan, to learn more about how it
works and what it’s like to document the moment a new life enters the world.
“As a mom to the most amazing
human, birth photography makes
perfect sense to me. I only wish that
I could go back in time 23 years
ago to when I was pregnant so that
I could hire a birth photographer.
Sadly, I cannot, and even if I could,
birth photography was not a genre
back then but, today it is a once-ina-lifetime
chance to document the
birth story. It’s about the moments
before your life changes forever. It’s
about the expressions and emotions
of seeing and holding your baby for
the first time.”
Chasing a dream…
A professional photographer
specialising in black and white portrait
photography, Darian first came
across birth photography a few years
ago, and back then it evoked such
emotion in her that she immediately
knew it was something she wanted
to pursue. When the pandemic
rendered her unable to travel, she
returned to SA and did just that. “I
chased my dream, passed my exams
with flying colours and joined the
South African Birth Photographers
Association becoming the first birth
photographer in Durban.”
The value of a birth photographer…
“One of the biggest milestones in a
parent’s life is the moment that their
baby enters the world. With all that
is going on, there are details that
you forget. Babies change quickly
in their first few hours. The father
should be able to relax and give
the mom support instead of having
to worry about taking photos. A
birth photographer captures those
priceless expressions and emotions
and the details that you miss.”
A typical day…
“I keep my phone on me at all times when I am on call. All my gear and scrubs
are prepared so that I can grab it at a moment’s notice. I try to blend into the
background once I get to the birth. It’s important to be quiet and not disturb
mom. Being a mom, I know how sacred the birth space is and am totally
respectful of that during a birth session. I understand the flow of birth so I
know exactly how to position myself so that I am not in the way but still able to
capture the important images. A birth session with me is not posed or staged
and is totally non-invasive. After the birth, I get home and immediately edit a
few photos to send to mom and dad so that they can use them for the birth
announcement. As time goes by and memories start to fade, these photos will
be treasured for a lifetime.”
Most beautiful moments…
“Seeing a baby take its first breath is such an emotional experience for me.”
Tough times…
“Birth can be very unpredictable. There is typically no predetermined time for
when it will happen or how long it will last. It may be a few hours or it may be
days. I am on call for 24 hours a day, every day for sometimes up to a month. I
would rather wake up for a false start than miss the birth.”
Things pregnant mothers should
know…
“SABPA accredited photographers have an
oath of conduct to adhere to. Mom and babies
safety is of the utmost importance to us. Book
a photographer that you are comfortable with.
This is one of the most important moments
of your life so your photographer needs to be
someone that you can trust.”
How graphic will the photos be…
“That is up to you. I only capture images
parents are comfortable with. I can shoot from
behind mom’s shoulder or from the doctor/
midwife’s perspective. This is discussed when
Hooked on screens
We all know that too much screen time is bad for our kids. But we don’t always fully
understand the implications, how to detect if our child has a problem and what steps
to put in place to keep it under control.
The time our children spend on
screens is an important topic and an
issue almost all ‘millennial parents’ are
currently facing. We caught up with
author of the book, #wellconnected:
How to be Safe, Wise and Kind Online,
Christy Herselman.
Christy founded a movement called
The Chat six years ago and her first
book, called The Chat: Birds Bees
and Destinies, helps parents explain
the purpose and mechanics of sex
to seven to nine year old children.
Christy works closely with parents,
schools, children and teens. “Big topics
like sex, social media and screen time
are sometimes hard to talk about.
As parents we can feel awkward,
overwhelmed or just plain clueless!”
We asked Christy to share some
current stats. “Depending on socioeconomic
influences, children aged
four to 12 are spending more than
four hours online daily. Teenagers
spend between six and half and
nine hours (and on multiple screens
simultaneously!). The American
Association of Paediatricians
WIN!
Win one of
two copies of
Christy’s
book
54 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga June 2021
recommends the following: under 2 years old - no screen time, two to five years
old – no more than one hour per day and five to 17 years old – no more than two
hours per day.”
It’s important to consider how your children are spending their time online as
well, as not all screen time carries the same potential negative impact. “Girls
spending excessive time on comparative social media is detrimental to their
self-esteem and relationships and gaming is one of the most addictive forms of
screen time and needs careful monitoring.”
So what makes screens addictive? “Gaming is designed to appeal to the mastery
curve and spike dopamine in our brains, making it highly addictive. The mastery
curve makes us want to ‘pass one more level’ or ‘play one more round’ to see if we
can do better. While the rush of dopamine to the pleasure centre of our brains
caused by gaming makes us feel great but also drops very quickly and leaves us
craving more.” Christy says these repeated highs and lows are incredibly bad for
the brain and make children distracted and unable to pay attention for a long
time. “The normal, gradual release of dopamine from activities like hanging out
with our friends, playing sport and natural beauty are no longer enough and
these experiences begin to feel boring and mundane compared to their online
activities. Their brains can easily become addicted to these dopamine highs and
can result in gaming and screen dependencies and addictions.”
There are other factors too. Teachers report that children who spend excessive

time on screens are less schoolready,
inattentive and have poor
short-term memory and too
much time on screens, especially
gaming, can cause children to be
emotionally unstable, prone to
melt-downs, rudeness and antisocial
behaviour. Their physical
health is also impacted.
We asked Christy what warning
parents should look out for. “In
terms of screen addictions, look
out for increased and persistent
use of the game/app, social
withdrawal, frequent requests for
the device, tantrums when refused,
disengaging from other activities
and excessive preoccupation with
the game. In terms of screens in
general, look out for changes in
behaviour, secrecy, withdrawal
from friendships and family,
increased anxiety, issues around
body and food, lying and sneaking
around to get time on a device,
mood swings and irrational
behaviour. This is not an exhaustive
list but these may indicate that
their online interactions are having
a negative impact on your child.”
TWC_PRINT-BALLITO-BUS-MAY2021-PRINT.pdf 5 2021/05/18 15:06
Christy’s tips for creating a healthy digital culture in the home:
• Set pre-agreed time limits and stick to them. Use a timer for very young kids. For
older kids, have pre-agreed limits for different things like Facetiming friends and
family, connecting with friends, gaming, school work, family, movies etc. Train
them in self-managing and self-regulating. No more than two hours a day, even on
weekends.
• Only use devices at home, NEVER in restaurants or other public places. Moms,
delete all those games off your phone to avoid the temptation of handing your
phone to your whining child in the supermarket queue! Patience is a life skill.
• Never use cellphones or tablets at the table, during family activities or social
gatherings.
• All phones and devices only used in communal areas. When not in use they
should be stored where you are in control of them. I have a charging station in the
kitchen where all devices (including phones) live when not in use.
• No phones at bedtime. All devices plugged into a communal charging station
one hour before bedtime. Read before bed. Children should never have devices in
their bedrooms overnight. You would be shocked at how many kids game while
their parents are asleep!
• Avoid screen in the morning before school work.
• Make sure that all homework, chores, packing of school bags, etc, are done before
you allow screen time during the week. Better yet, keep it for the weekend.
• Eat meals together at the table (at least once a day), schedule family activities
and be intentional about one-on-one moments of connection through the day.
Screens often disconnect family members from one another.
• Make sure they get enough regular exercise and uninterrupted sleep. Prioritize
face-to-face interactions and relationships.
• Stick to the boundaries you have set.
• Get help if you feel you aren’t able to get a handle on this yourself.

An underwater adventure
It’s an incredible experience, exploring and getting up close and personal with the
beautiful wilderness that lies beneath and alongside our ocean. A snorkelling safari
is a great way to discover the wonderland that exists right here on our doorstep,
and our year-round warm water means it’s something you can even do in winter!
Text: Leah Shone
It truly is remarkable what lies
beneath our ocean and on our rocky
shores. Even in just waist-deep water
and in easy-to-access tidal pools, you
can discover hundreds of fascinating
creatures. All you have to do is pop
on a snorkel and mask and submerge
yourself into the treasure trove.
We were recently invited to join Tidal
Tao Snorkelling Safaris founder Michy
Morris on a snorkel in the beautiful,
protected Shaka’s Rock tidal pool and
were absolutely blown away by the
number of incredible fish, corals and
sea life we saw.
Michy, who is passionate (one might
even say obsessed) with the ocean
and our coastline, started Tidal Tao
in 2013. Her goal was (and still is) to
expose people to the wide array of
intertidal life along the KZN coast,
with the hopes of educating and
ultimately encouraging us to protect
and save the shores.
On the morning of our snorkelling
safari we met Michy on the beach
road in Shaka’s Rock before the sun
was up. After following all the Covid
60 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga June 2021

protocols, we headed down to the tidal pool where we were given wetsuits (if
you wanted one), fins, a snorkel and a mask. Before walking into the tidal pool,
Michy gave us a quick briefing about what to expect and what not to do. And
then it was into the water we went.
There is no skill involved and as long as you know how to swim, you can snorkel.
The kids were delighted when Michy offered them pool noodles to float on,
making it really easy for them to focus on the world below.
Within moments we were transported into an underwater wonderland, coming
face-to-face with a surprising array of fish species. The Dolphin Coast is home
to over 150 fish species found in less than waist deep water, over 100 species of
Nudibranchs and some of the southern most shallow water corals in the world.
We saw everything from beautiful Parrotfish to fascinating Devil Firefish and
many wonderful corals. Michy stayed alongside us the whole time, feeding us
with interesting information and facts and finding and pointing out the good
stuff! She was especially good with the kids.
After our snorkel, while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate alongside the water, we
shared what we had seen. We were all in agreement at how amazed we were
and couldn’t believe that we had had this right on our doorstep all these years
without even realising how wonderful it is.
If you already know how to snorkel and have your own equipment, what are
you waiting for? Get it out and get exploring! Booking a snorkelling safari with
Michy is great for both beginners and those who have snorkelled before – her
knowledge of the ocean and its critters is remarkable and you know you are in
for an adventure.
Michy shares some rules for
everyone to remember when
visiting the rocky shores:
• Treat the ocean the same way you
would a nature reserve
• Take only photos. Never touch or
disturb marine life
• Many marine animals look like rocks
and plants (especially corals and
sponges), but they are living creatures.
• Be quiet and patient. Fish usually
dive for cover when they see humans,
so be quiet and avoid splashing too
much. Move slowly and you’ll see lots
more!
• Look, appreciate and be amazed at
what our stretch of the coast has to
offer.
Two-wheel ride
Take to the road and explore local on your bike
Local road trips and holidays are on the up, and with our beautiful scenery,
cultural history and unique flora, biking holidays and exploring on two wheels are fast
becoming a popular choice as a way for families to enjoy the great outdoors together.
Once you’ve done the research and found the perfect destination for your next family bike
vacation, the hardest part is out the way. Next is to line up all your family’s gear and get packing!
Packing for your bike adventure
It starts with the helmets, rain jackets, shoes and then, next thing you know, you’ve packed way
too many outfits and loads of stuff that your kids will never need. Let’s be honest, packing for a
week away or just one night with your family often means the same number of bags.
Fortunately, the team from Thule is here to help trim down your packing list and,
more importantly, make a checklist that’s right for your family.
Start with a duffel for essentials. A bike trip can go downhill fast – and not in a
good way – by forgetting to pack helmets and riding gear. Stick to the basics
and set aside one go-to duffel for all the gear you can’t live without.
Then you can use other bags, like rolling suitcases or backpacks, for clothes,
shoes, and activities for the kids. But you can’t have a great bike trip
without the essentials, so find a spacious, durable duffel bag to store
all your must-have items.
Giving the kids a great ride
When you’re away with your family, making sure you
can explore everything on your list means pedalling for
plenty of miles. For the little ones, just coming along for
the ride can be fun for them and you’ll be happy knowing
they are safe, cosy and not missing a moment while
riding around in a new place. A multisport bike trailer is
the perfect addition to any young family’s vacation with
bikes and is the best way to ensure you see all the sights
with the kids on board. They will be happy and comfy in
their spacious cockpit … plenty of windows, pockets for
snacks, and a five-point harness to keep them safe. Bonus
… some trailers conveniently convert from a bike trailer to
a stroller, perfect for when you reach your destination.
An alternative is to invest in a good child bike seat that
will allow you and your treasured cargo an opportunity to
enjoy the everyday bike rides – safely, easily and in style.
With front and rear seats available, it’s a great choice for
letting your child see the world from your bike.
Keep hydrated
A good pack is not only a great way to stay hydrated,
but it’s also an easy way to carry many of the
essential items on this list. A hip belt is also a really
convenient way to access phones safely and is
added storage for essential tools or nutrition.
62 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga June 2021

Most importantly … getting the bikes there!
The final step on the packing list is the most important and the one thing you really can’t do without on
the trip. The bikes, of course! But before you just strap any bike rack to your trunk, you need to choose
the correct bike rack for your car and your requirements. From hitch-mounted bike racks that tilt out of
the way for easy access to your trunk to easy-to-use platform racks that grab onto the wheels for simple
loading and unloading, there is bound to be a perfect option for you and your family. The new Thule
OutWay 2 and 3 Bike Carriers are premium rear-door mounted bike racks (no tow bar required) for an
easy getaway. These carriers can be mounted to a variety of vehicles and not only do they lock to your
vehicle, they also include locks that lock your bike to the rack. There has also been a huge growth in sales
of e-bikes for those who want to enjoy biking without doing too much hard work. The Thule EasyFold
XT Bike Rack (now also available in a black version) is a fully foldable, compact, and easy-to-use towbarmounted
bike rack for all types of bikes, including e-bikes. No matter how far away you plan to take that
next bike vacation, making sure your bikes make it to and from your destination safely is the only way you
can drive with confidence, knowing you and your family are on the perfect trip! Details: thulestore.co.za
