Marion Mosman Scott Larivee, Teacher Mary Lyon K-8 School Hi, my name is Marion and I am going to tell you about a time I showed courage. The type of courage called fortitude, to be more specific. To me courage is standing up for what is right even if you are afraid. A quote from Chris Gardner reminds me of my story, “Strong people stand up for themselves. But the strongest people stand up for others.” I want to teach people to stand up to bullies and that bullying is not okay. My courage moment took place at my former school. The day started out normal. I woke up early and went to school not knowing this would be the day I showed courage. A little later in the day things started to change. I knew there had been bullying going on at my school. I had experienced it myself, but I did not realize how bad it would get. My ELA teacher had been out of school for a while and we had a substitute. There was a lot of bullying going on, but the substitute teacher didn’t really do anything about it. I was sitting near one of my friends and she always wore a hijab (a hijab is a head covering worn by Muslim woman and girls). A girl in my class had bullied me and my friend earlier that year, but I thought it was over. I was doing my work and heard fighting, so I turned around and the bully was saying very mean things. I couldn’t believe what I saw. My heart started to beat super fast and my eyes opened wider. The bully had pulled off my friend’s hijab. I knew it wasn’t right! I immediately stood up and moved quickly over to them. I was very scared that she would start being mean to me, but I knew I had to help my friend. So I said, “Put her hijab down and leave my friend alone!!” She put it down, but she was still saying mean things. In my head I was thinking about what else I could do to help. I decided it would be best to get another teacher to help. I went and got my Math teacher from the classroom next door and she helped end the fight. After the incident my friend and I became much closer. The Courage of Children: Boston and Beyond 14
“This is how I live my life now.” I am proud of the courage I showed while standing up to the bully. I hope this teaches people that bullying is not okay and that if you see someone being bullied, you should stand up for them even if you are scared. This is how I live my life now. Volume XXX 15
