Sarah Olamokun Thomas Savas, Teacher Mother Caroline Academy My definition of courage is the ability to do something even though it may be frightening. Some examples of courage are physical, social, creative, and moral courage. The type of courage I’m going to talk about in my essay is social courage. I believe that people are courageous when they passionately fight for a cause. When people stand up for a cause, they show social courage because they are standing up in public to fight for what they believe. For example, people with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement stood up against police brutality and racism while the entire world watched. As they fought to bring justice after the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and many more innocent people, many people publicly threatened them. LGBTQ+ and immigration advocacy groups also showed courage when they marched and protested in public even though many people disagreed with their ideas. In June, my mom and I were driving past a Stop & Shop when we saw people protesting in the streets. They were marching and holding signs that said things like “no justice, no peace.” We honked our horn as a show of support. I remember wanting to join the protest with them. I wanted to show support and stand with them because I felt the same passion they showed while protesting. I had watched the news to see the stories about the many people who wanted change, and I wanted to walk with them and feel powerful— like I could be part of this change. In this hard and cruel world, we can still support each other. We still have what it takes to be a peaceful world. It is not easy to fight for peace and change. There are some dangers when doing this. Some people may treat you differently because of what you believe. But with courage, you can be who you want to be and fight for what you believe.
