Champion of Courage Award The Champion of Courage Award is given annually in recognition for outstanding volunteerism at MAXCourage. Past recipients have been board members and long-time volunteers who have given their time, treasure, and talent to the organization. Awardees go beyond the call of duty, and we could not do the work we do without them. We honor ALL OF OUR COURAGEOUS TEACHERS as the 2021 recipients of the Champion of Courage of Award. Elsie Wilmerding Award for Excellence in Teaching The MAXCourage Board of Trustees is honored to present the Elsie Wilmerding Award for Excellence in Teaching. Named in honor of our late and long-time board member, this award celebrates Elsie’s talent and passion for teaching, and the tremendous impact teachers can have in the lives of young people. Elsie spent thirteen years as a learning specialist at the Fenn School where she was known for her patience, kindness, and creativity with her students. She authored workbooks and the young adult historical novel, This Land is Mine!. This beautiful book tells the story of Crazy Horse and General Custer and the contested expansion of the Western United States, through the perspective of those two important historical figures. The recipient of the 2021 Elsie Wilmerding Award for Excellence in Teaching is THU-HANG TRAN-PEOU, of Josiah Quincy Upper School, for embodying the qualities that Elsie championed. Volume XXX ix
