UN NUEVO Y ESPECIAL ENCUENTRO DE LAS ENERGÍAS
RENOVABLES
orientadas a levantar esas limitaciones.

In 2021, the Cerro Dominador solar complex reached a new
milestone, successfully synchronizing to the Chilean electricity
system, which is the first step towards accelerating Chile's
decarbonization. The plant will deliver renewable energy to the
SEN in stages until it reaches full load. The complex combines a
photovoltaic plant (100 MW) and a concentrating solar power
plant (110MW), the first of its kind in Latin America.
"We are proud of this new milestone in the development of our
project. Having started to deliver electricity to the National Electric
System shows the reality and benefits of CSP technology. We
know that the entry of a new technology into the country is a
great responsibility, so from the beginning we have taken every
measure to ensure the successful integration of this new plant
into the country's power grid," said Fernando Gonzalez, CEO of
RIAL
A NEW AND SPECIAL MEETING ON RENEWABLE
ENERGIES
After a hard work of preparation and coordination, during April we managed to carry out the eighth version of
the Annual Meeting of Renewable Energies, this year called Summit ACERA. Undoubtedly, this version was an
adventure. We had to give ourselves completely to digital and trust that everything would go well. And so it
did. Between both days we had more than 1700 people connected, in addition to having luxury guests in each
of the presentations and panel discussions, as was the Director General of IRENA, Francesco La Camera, who,
in addition to highlighting the Chilean wine, made an interesting review of the state of renewable energy in
the world and how it contributes to the battle against the climate crisis.
Another of the great guests was the Biminister of Energy and Mining, Juan Carlos Jobet, who accompanied
us in person in the impressive television studio set up in the Riesco space, where he delivered a close and
direct message to the renewable energy industry. "Today we are developing more renewable energy than
ever before in history. Our estimate is that more than 6 GW of capacity will come on line in 2021 alone. We
also project that, by the end of this year, the installed renewable capacity will reach more than 60%, a situation
that has not occurred since 1998," he said at the beginning of his speech.
The Minister's words are very much in line with those of ACERA's spokespersons, who reinforced the
industry's commitment and resilience despite the adversity of recent years. In the first instance the social
outbreak, followed by the pandemic caused by Covid-19, which have affected the renewable energy sector.
However, the NCRE industry continued to advance, closing 2020 with more than 8,000 MW of installed
capacity. In addition, 242 MW of coal were removed from the energy matrix, with the closure of Bocamina 1
and Ventanas 1, a very significant step in the total decarbonization of our electricity matrix.
"All of the above also made it possible to achieve the desired NCRE 20/25 goal, five years earlier than
expected, and by far, closing the year with a 22% share of NCRE in Chile's energy matrix. Now, with the same
conviction, we have upped the ante with a redoubled commitment, and more convinced than ever that we
can achieve a 100% renewable matrix for Chile", said the President of ACERA, José Ignacio Escobar.
In order to continue advancing at this pace, it is key to maintain regulatory certainty in the industry, which is
what has made Chile a pioneer in renewable energies and an example of energy transition. And it is not that
we seek to avoid regulatory changes, but that any modification is made with clear objectives and duly justified
from the technical, environmental, economic and social points of view. "Especially thinking about the near
challenges ahead, such as the development of green hydrogen, energy storage and the real explosion in the
installation of NCRE plants that is in process, how do we transport all that clean energy if transmission
planning is slower than generation?" said ACERA's Executive Director, Carlos Finat, in his speech.
In this regard, at the ACERA Summit, Minister Jobet lit a light of hope. "We have the enormous challenge of
developing in time the necessary transmission capacity to safely incorporate renewables. On this front, the
ministry is executing a plan to strengthen transmission that considers long-term planning, expansion plans,
tariffs, tenders, project monitoring and new technologies, and for which a special unit dedicated solely to
transmission has been created," he said.
During the event, ACERA also reinforced its commitment to society and communities. In this regard, Escobar
said that "we are aware of some problems that have arisen in the construction of renewable energy projects
and from ACERA we are working, together with our member companies, and supported by the experience of
the international associations of the Ibero-American Renewable Energy Network (RedREN), to avoid such
situations in the future, promoting good and best practices in the entire value chain of a renewable energy
project". The fact is that being sustainable goes far beyond producing clean energy; it means doing so in
harmony and respect for the social and environmental surroundings in which the project is inserted. It is not
an easy equation to solve, but we are sure that there is a real commitment and conviction to always improve
these processes. Especially because our matrix will continue to grow, and the only way is through renewable
energies.
NEWS
ACERA held a workshop
on new technologies for
the network of the
future in Chile
In this decade, the incorporation of non-conventional renewables could reach
60% or 70% of our country's energy generation. For this to be possible, the
technical and economic signals that allow for the necessary operational
resources to adequately take advantage of the low price advantages of NCRE
with these penetration levels are fundamental.
That is why ACERA held a workshop entitled "New renewable technologies
and the grid of the future in Chile", sponsored by the member company
Puente Sur, which included presentations by David Perrone, coordinator of
studies at Estudios Eléctricos, who presented on stability aspects of the National
Electric System (SEN) with high penetration of renewable energies; Thorsten
Buelo, SMA Innovation & Technology Lab, who spoke about the contribution of
inverters to system stability; and Eckard Quitmann, head of ENERCON's sales
grid integration department, who focused on the challenges of the energy
transition and the steps to solve them from the point of view of wind
technology. The activity was also moderated by Ana Lía Rojas, director and
founding partner of EnerConnex.
The event ended with a plenary session in which the opinions of the attendees
were collected and a space for reflection on the Future Network for Chile was
opened. "This activity was a new step in the indicated direction. We learned
about the limitations of the current system and presented the 'state of the art' of
new technologies aimed at overcoming these limitations. With this we seek to
inspire the authorities, academia, consultants and companies to advance
rapidly in the application of new technologies for the electricity system of the
future," commented ACERA's executive director, Carlos Finat.
The first full-scale marine energy
converter is installed in Chile
With its 6,435 km of coastline, Chile is undoubtedly an attractive place
for marine energy developers. In addition to its powerful waves and
the currents generated by the tides in the south of the country, it is
estimated to generate more than 160 GW of exploitable tidal energy
resource, equivalent to more than ten times the installed electrical
capacity.
This is why the Marine Energy Research and Innovation Center
(MERIC) installed equipment that will allow the country to lead
research on marine energy, becoming the first of its kind in Latin
America and the fifth in the world. The device was acquired by Enel
Green Power, a member company of ACERA, and is installed two
kilometers off the coast of Las Cruces, in the Valparaíso region.
The wave converter is part of the "Open Sea Lab" platform of the
MERIC center, which provides information on ocean conditions not
only for research on marine energy, but also on many other relevant
areas of the coastal ocean, such as climate change, currents and
swells. For this, the energy generated by the buoy will be harnessed
on site to power submerged sensors, which will collect real-time data
that will be made available to the public through a website specially
designed for this purpose.
ACERA adds new engineer to its
Research Team
One of ACERA's purposes is sustainability in all areas, which also
includes working for gender equity and breaking down the barriers that
still exist for women to enter masculinized industries, such as energy.
It is in this line that the association is an active part of the public-private
roundtable Energía +Mujer, which, among its objectives, seeks to
increase the percentage (23%) of women in the sector.
Despite the fact that the staff of the renewable energy association has
more than 50% female participation, one of the challenges was to
increase this participation in the area of studies, and for this reason,
and after a selection process, María Jesús Mancilla joined as the new
studies engineer, who complements the team composed of the
studies director, Darío Morales, and the studies engineer, Felipe
Gallardo.
María Jesús studied Mechanical Civil Engineering at the Universidad
Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), developed her memory work
focused on the use of green hydrogen as energy for public transport
buses in Santiago and, in parallel, participated in the development of a
detailed study on hydrogen fuel cell technology applied to public
transport buses during her internship at the German agency GIZ
(specifically in the Decarbonization project of the Renewable Energy
and Energy Efficiency Program). Within the university she also worked
as a collaborator in the second phase of the electromobility web
platform of the Ministry of Energy, generating content associated with
the use of green hydrogen in transport and the V2G system.
Government presented new agreement
to promote electromobility
More than 36% of Chile's energy consumption is used by the
transportation sector, 99% of which corresponds to imported and
polluting fossil fuels, for which electromobility is a key solution. This is
why the government promoted the signing of the Public-Private
Agreement for Electromobility, led by the Ministry of Energy.
This year, in its 4th version, it brought together 68 companies and
public institutions to declare their actions in favor of electromobility,
presenting actions and projects that in the short term will contribute to
disseminate the advantages of electric mobility in Chile and promote
this technological change in national transportation. The signing was
headed by the biminister of Energy and Mining, Juan Carlos Jobet, the
minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Gloria Hutt, and the
minister of Environment, Carolina Schmidt.
The agreement groups the actions committed to in five goals: Double
the number of electric vehicle models available with respect to those
approved the previous year; Incorporate electric vehicles in at least 15
public and private organizations; Double the number of chargers in
the public network with respect to the previous year; Achieve at least
1,500 people trained in electromobility during 2021; and Promote new
uses of electromobility.
MEET OUR
MEMBERS
Andrea is a civil engineer, specialized in renewable energy and innovation. She is married and
has two children. "I dream of a 100% renewable Chile and I am convinced that thanks to
disruptive technologies we will achieve it before 2040", she assures. In the contribution to
this path, she co-founded in 2018 an engineering, energy and innovation consulting firm,
with a focus on the decarbonization of the energy matrix.
She says that in times of pandemic, she misses field trips and vacations, but says that today
more than ever, she enjoys her family, her dog and her cats. She also enjoys bike rides and
swimming when she can.
Gender equity is also one of the focuses of Andrea's development. Six years ago she started
leading "Mujeres Programadoras" (“Women Programmers”), at Fundación Kodea, and today she
leads the strategic alliances in "Talento Digital para Chile" (“Digital Talen for Chile”), a
public-private initiative, which is a great opportunity for people to make a labor reconversion and
redesign their lives towards the digital world. She is also an ambassador for Her Global Impact,
an innovation academy for women. "I believe that women need more space in technology and
engineering-related fields, so I am motivated by inclusion in the broadest sense," she says.
What are the products or services you offer or engage in and towards what type(s) of NCRE?
Andrea
Armillo
CEO y co-founder of INGENOVO
Natural Partner
aarmijo@ingenovo.cl
In our consulting firm we have three lines of service. First, PMGD project development and
co-development of Utility Scale projects. Also consulting to connect generators, investors and
developers with owners of land with potential for renewable energy development (solar and
wind). In this service, a long-term lease for the development of a wind farm over 100MW in the
IV Region with one of the most important generators in the country stands out. And finally, IT
and Telecommunications services for renewable energy plants in construction phase, where we
are currently working for a German generator that has three wind farms in Chile.
What are your latest developments related to the development of NCRE?
A Green Hydrogen Turbine. We are raising funds to develop this R&D pilot, which consists of a
wind turbine that uses the winds of the mountainous relief of Chile and Patagonia to generate
energy and produce green hydrogen.
What elements characterize and/or differentiate your work?
I have been fortunate to lead projects that have been pioneers in energy and technology in Chile,
and I put that seal at the service of my clients to make "things happen". We provide them with a
strategic vision and a holistic view of integration and sustainability to contribute together to the
acceleration of decarbonization in Chile. We are a "boutique" consulting firm and our
stakeholders see us as such and appreciate the difference that this model gives them, especially
in the very personal and committed relationship that we assume.
Why would you recommend being and ACERA member?
For me, ACERA marked a before and after in my career. It showed me where I wanted to focus
my contribution to the country and that is why I am proud to be a member of this association.
And I take this opportunity to call on SMEs in the industry, independent professionals and
especially women and people from the regions, to consider joining ACERA. I am convinced that
the vision of those who are part of this association will contribute to the decentralization of the
market, uniting, benefiting and bringing energy closer to users.

Juan is Chilean, married and has five children. He is a lawyer from Pontificia
Universidad Católica, with an LL.M. from the University of Chicago, USA. He has worked
at Prieto Abogados since 1998 and became a partner in 2005, actively participating in
the areas of Energy and Natural Resources; and Mergers and Acquisitions. In addition,
since 2010, he has been a member of the board of Cruzados SADP, being its president
from 2016 to date.
He says that his hobbies include watching and playing soccer and tennis, going on long
walks through different neighborhoods with his wife, spending time with family and
friends, reading novels, cycling with his youngest daughter, going to the south of Chile
and taking family trips.
Why did you decide to focus your career on the energy industry?
Juan
Tagle
Partner
prieto@prieto.cl
It was something that came naturally. Since I joined Prieto I have had to work intensively with
various relevant actors in the energy sector. First in financing issues, then directly in
construction and maintenance contracts of large thermal and hydraulic power plants, as well
as in negotiations and conflicts between principals and contractors or between generators. I
have also worked extensively in the natural gas and LNG industry. As a law firm we have always
been heavily involved in the energy industry and, certainly, in recent years, linked to the
development of many renewable energy projects.
Prieto is a law firm with 43 years of experience, where we advise domestic and foreign clients
with a team of lawyers who are trained to provide legal advice in all areas of law. "Our firm is
full-service, we advise clients in all areas of law. Particularly in energy matters, we have a
recognized and solid experience. We actively advise the main players in this market and we
have participated in the most important energy and natural resources projects of the last
decades", says Juan.
What are the novelties or changes in your company in the last time?
After a tremendously challenging 2020, both for us and for the world in general, at Prieto we
started this year with good news. The Energy and Natural Resources team has grown with the
arrival of Federico Rodríguez (lawyer from Universidad Diego Portales (UDP) and Master from
the London School of Economics, UK) as new Director in the area, accompanied by two senior
associates: Andrés Maldini (lawyer UDP and Master from the University of Melbourne,
Australia), and Jorge Echeverría (lawyer from Universidad Católica and Diploma in Energy and
Natural Resources from Universidad de Los Andes). Their objective is to strengthen the area
and meet the increased demand for clean and sustainable energy in the country. This new
team has extensive experience in the development of electricity generation projects (solar,
thermal and hydroelectric), as well as in the PMGD sector, the salmon industry and the mining
industry. Also, the head of the environmental area of the firm, Agustín Martorell, was appointed
Director, who will strengthen the area with his experience, thus responding to the client's
needs.
Regarding the projects they are currently working on, Juan highlights that they are providing
legal advice to Engie Energía Chile in its transition process from assets that use fossil fuels to
renewable energies. This has involved participating in the development of several larger-scale
renewable energy projects, such as the 162 MW Calama Wind Farm, located in the Calama
district, the Sol de Vallenar project, which is a 308.7 MW photovoltaic plant located in the
Vallenar district, among several others totaling 1,000 MW.
On the other hand, Juan says that they are advising several PMGD projects, including the Tralka
Energías Renovables Private Investment Fund, which today has an 80 MW wind farm in
operation, and the Rockville Energy I Investment Fund, which they are advising on the
acquisition of projects under development, under construction or already built for more than
140 MW, which will make it the largest public investment fund of its kind.
Why would you recommend being a partner of ACERA?
ACERA allows us to be up to date with what is happening in the renewable energy sector, its
members are relevant actors in the area and allows all of them to interact with each other in
order to better contribute to its development.

Outstanding Event
ACERA held its annual meeting highlighting
the great progress of renewable energies in
Chile and the world
The activity was attended by the biminister of Energy and
Mining, Juan Carlos Jobet, who highlighted the positive figures
of renewable energy projects in the Chilean matrix.
Renewable energies have been consolidated in the country's matrix by leaps
and bounds, and months after meeting the 20/25 NCRE goal, five years before
stipulated by law, they continue to position themselves as the protagonists of
the energy transition. Under this premise, the "ACERA Summit, The Annual
Renewable Energy Meeting 2021" was held, becoming the eighth version of
the event.
The event was divided into two days, the first being inaugurated by the
president of ACERA, José Ignacio Escobar, followed by the presentation by
Francesco La Camera, general director of IRENA, who spoke about the status
and projections of renewable energies around the world and their relevance in
mitigating climate change. Then a panel discussion was held that delved into
the importance of new trends in clean energy for sustainable development.
The second day opened with the delivery of the "ACERA Forest", a special gift
prepared for those present, which included the planting of 800 native trees
through the Reforestemos Foundation. The activity continued with the
participation of the executive director of ACERA, Carlos Finat, and a message
from the biminister of Energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, which gave way to the panel
focused on the existing energy consensus on the feasibility and relevance of
clean energy for sustainable development. The conversation was followed by
the awarding of the Outstanding Partner of ACERA, which went to Evelyn
Stevens, manager of sustainability and climate change at PwC.
The summit counted with the participation of the Chilean Hydrogen
Association (H2Chile) and the Chilean Transmission Companies Association as
collaborating entities, in addition to the platinum sponsorship of Acciona, AES
Gener, Engie, Huawei, ISA Interchile, Santerno, Siemens Energy, Siemens
Gamesa and SMA and the gold sponsorship of Goldwind, Mainstream
Renewable Power and Transelec, while Aela Energía and Huawei joined as
supporting sponsors.
