Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille on the beachfront. It’s 

also a part of the Montreal Beach Resort, where you’ll also find the 

Wine Cellar. 

The bartender: Lauren is entering her third summer with Harry’s. 

She’s made the rounds in her roles, including bartender, a server 

upstairs and downstairs as well as takeout. She told us how happy 

she and the rest of the Harry’s team is to be back. Indoor and outdoor 

seating is available this summer as well as takeout for as long as they 

can keep it going. Lauren loves the vibe of Harry’s and said it’s one of 

the best spots to work in the summer. “The people, the crushes and 

working across from the beach — you can’t beat it.” 

The crushes: Harry’s is known for their wide variety of crushes — 

they hold Crush Wednesday every week with $5 orange crushes and 

$6 for all other flavors. It was the middle of the work day, so as much 

as we would’ve liked to, we held off on the crushes with lunch. We did 

find out they introduced a new watermelon crush for the summer. Our 

favorite new addition is the Crush Covid. A percentage of all proceeds 

from this signature crush go to charity — a cool way to give back while 

having a great summer. 

The food: It was a full house for lunch this week, a rarity in the EZ 

office. Jack picked up a summer in Cape May salad and sesame ginger 

salad for him and his wife Diane to enjoy — they have new baby Oban 

keeping them busy. Cathrine enjoyed a Caesar salad with shrimp 

while Kayla and Nicole both decided to treat themselves to a burger. 

Kayla enjoyed the Harry’s burger while Nicole opted for the prime rib 

burger. We only wish we had a crush on that sunny Friday. 

The takeaway: Harry’s is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on 

a first-come, first-served basis — visit their website for current hours. 

After Memorial Day, they will be open seven days a week. Enjoy live 

music up on the deck and a perfect view of the beach right from your 

table. And make sure to enjoy a crush when you have the chance!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

Iwrite to you only recently emerged from 

two-week quarantine and the morning 

after my first TNT gig in a while, which 

is another way of saying that I am hungover. 

I blame Skip Schwester, longtime 

karaoke friend and Colorado mountain owner, 

who bought me that 6pm Jameson. It all kind of 

went downhill from there. 

(This is where I’d normally make a Covid- 

19 joke, but 99.87% of you won’t get it.) 

Weekly Beard & Weight Watch: While I 

didn’t quite reach my goal of swelling up to 250 

during my personal shutdown, topping out at 

242, I did give it the old college try. Alas, if only 

I’d known those daily games of basketball and 

mowing my lawn every other day because there 

was nothing else to do would burn valuable 

calories, I would have laid down more. And 

believe me, I laid down a lot. My beard is just 

a regular old salt-and-pepper (mostly salt) 

Vandyke that’s getting a little scruffy because 

nobody in my house seems to know what happened 

to my brand new yellow beard trimmer. I 

guess it just walked out of the house on its own. 

(I’ve been a dad too long…) 

Quarantine Diet Suggestion of the Week: 

The ol’ #26 at Uncle Bill’s in North Cape May 

never lets me down. Three sausages wrapped 

in three fluffy pancakes or Three Little Pigs in 

a Blanket. Because sometimes you just want 

some stuff that tastes awesome. Plus, if you eat 

it before noon, you can convince yourself that 

“these will be my carbs for the day.” Morgan 

Freeman: Those were not Terry’s carbs for the 

day. 

Quarantine Movie Review of the Week: I 

read the book Live By Night by Dennis LeHane 

about a decade ago and really loved it, and was 

super-excited about the Ben Affleck film version 

that came out in 2016. I remember liking 

it, but when I recently rewatched it on HBO 

(along with about 7,000 other movies) I loved 

it, which makes it that much more puzzling why 

it was such a critical and commercial bomb. 

Anyway, check it out if you have a chance. 

Quarantine Recommendation of the 

Week: If you find yourself stuck at home for 

an extended period and swiftly running out of 

food (which happens anywhere I’m stuck for 

more than an hour or two) InstaCart can get 

you restocked in a couple hours. I’m not really 

a Door Dasher or Grub Hubber, but InstaCart 

is legit. 

Quarantine sucked, but the one silver lining 

was having everyone in the house together 

for two weeks. You know how they say you 

never know when’s the last time you’re going to 

pick up your kid or hold his hand while crossing 

the street? Yeah. That. Now, if you’ll excuse me, 

I have to go ugly cry in the corner for an hour.

porch, weather permitting. We’re 

trading Thursdays with the brilliant 

Sage Thomas this summer 

and yes, Sage, Nancy, Camille 

Peruto, Amy Faden and Robin 

Madeline bring a distinctly XX 

vibe to the place (uh, that’s the 

female chromosome symbol, not, 

you know, the other thing). People 

said I was crazy booking so many 

beautiful, talented women this 

summer, but with the amount of 

testosterone Tim Joyce and I bring 

three nights a week (Tuesday, 

Friday, Saturday) I figured I better 

balance it out. Anyway, Nancy is 

awesome, as you may have heard 

me say about 10,000 times before, 

and I can’t wait to sing with her. 

(I have The Office on in the 

background and if you don’t choke 

up when “Forever” starts playing 

at Jim and Pam’s wedding I’m 

afraid there’s no hope for you.) 

Errol O’Donnell Shout-Out of 

the Week: I don’t often let non- 

Terry O’Brien people tell me what 

to put in my column, but when 

they’re as cool as Exit Zero Delivery 

Minion Errol O’Donnell, I’ll make 

an exception. He wants to thank 

Debbie from Cape May Peanut 

Butter Co. for the chocolate chip 

cookies, which helped tide him 

over until his mid-morning Wawa 

break. Sounds to me like Erroll 

eats like a hobbit — three breakfasts, 

multiple lunches, copious 

snacks. I like his style. 

I’m not much of a Burt 

Bacharach fan, I find his compositions 

to be needlessly, overly complicated, 

but “This Guy’s in Love 

With You” is an absolute gem and 

my new favorite song to sing. 

My latest batch of Larry 

Crinkle commercials should be 

hitting the air some time this 

month (if you’re curious, just 

YouTube “Larry Crinkle Davis 

Honda”), in the meantime, I’ve 

become something of the Nic Cage 

of pharmaceutical industrial films, 

waxing poetic about such diverse 

topics as cholesterol medications 

and contact lens solutions ( you 

can tell I’m a really good actor 

because I was able to talk convincingly 

about contact lens solutions 

and I DON’T EVEN WEAR 

CONTACTS). These training 

films highlight my two greatest 

strengths as an actor; standing 

still and memorizing large chunks 

of dialogue in a short period of 

time. 

Quarantine Magic Trick of 

the Week: I can accurately predict, 

within 30 seconds, when a member 

of my household will need to 

use the bathroom because it will 

be within 30 seconds of my going 

into the bathroom. 

I knew we were living through 

the Dumbest Era, but I had no idea 

we’d reached Spiral: From the Book of 

Saw levels of stupidity. 

If you find Trevor Noah funny, 

may I humbly suggest that you are 

a big dummy. 

Almost 20 years in our house 

now and we’ve yet to be able to 

keep a functioning drain stopper 

in our bathroom sink for longer 

than a week. You’d be shocked 

what my shooting percentage is 

in swishing my toothbrush right 

down the drain when I toss it from 

the shower. (Yes, I brush my teeth 

in the shower. It’s warm in there.) 

That’s Hilarious of the Week: I 

just noticed the packaging on Scott 

Tissue toilet paper brags “One Roll 

Lasts A Week!” Ha! Clearly the 

Scott Tissue family never spent a 

week in my house. 

As soon as my son Owen 

was old enough to start absorbing 

my fatherly wisdom (about six 

months ago), I began sharing the 

lessons and stories of my childhood. 

After one of these sessions 

he looked at me with wide, terrified 

eyes and asked, “Dad, how are 

you not a super villain?” I laughed, 

then I thought about it. And he’s 

right; you’re all lucky I’ve used my 

powers for good. But it feels like 

I could turn at any second. “Zack 

Snyder’s Terry O’Brien” has a nice 

ring to it.

Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops 

learning is old, whether at 20 or 

80.” Or as Diane from the TV show 

Cheers said about the barflies all 

around her, “If ignorance is bliss, 

this is Eden.” Or as I like to say, “The only 

failure is failing to learn.” Taking in good 

information and trying to expand our minds is 

essential to a healthy society. Put another way, 

if everyone gives up on growing and understanding, 

this country is doomed. 

So, you could say lifelong learning is... 

well... patriotic. Hasan Minhaj is a comedian 

turned writer/producer/host for the Netflix 

series Patriot Act. The show ran for nearly 

two years and 39 episodes before the plug 

was pulled June 2020. What Minhaj has left 

behind is nothing short of a video encyclopedia 

of unsurpassed exploration. Each episode 

is focused on one subject, and he examines 

every crevice of that topic. It’s like 60 minutes 

on steroids. No wonder each episode is about 

20 minutes.

dives with his quick wit, hysterical jabs, a little 

cussing, and indisputable facts. One episode 

was about public transportation. I thought, 

“Do I really want to watch an entire show 

about public transportation?” It was riveting! 

He has an uncanny way to get into the details, 

then gives a view from 30,000 feet — it’s 

amazing. Suffice it to say public transportation 

is an issue on several fronts. How about 

local newspapers? He covered that too. Turns 

out, we need local news to (for one) keep local 

elected officials in check — but these papers 

are going away... and fast. 

My favorite was the episode when he covered 

the way philanthropy works. I’ve worked 

in fundraising my whole life, and many of my 

beliefs were not only explored but taken in 

directions I didn’t anticipate. He discussed 

how we treat the elderly, racial tensions, the 

video game industry, and dozens of topics — 

and you don’t want to skip any of them. They 

are all relevant. Minaj is essential viewing for 

those of us who care about knowing. 

There are moments on the show where 

he asks viewers to hit pause so you can read 

something on the giant screens behind him. 

That’s how quickly he’s covering ground. 

It’s like he’s covering material as if he’s running 

out of time. And he was. When Netflix 

announced they were cutting his show, nearly 

21,000 people signed on to a petition asking 

to bring it back. And people are still signing 

it. Google it and sign it. It’s the patriotic thing 

to do!

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

The other day I went into a Barnes 

and Noble store ( yes, they still exist) 

and found the main traffic area paved 

with bird books. While not personally 

surprised that birds constitute an 

appealing subject, I was surprised that you, 

Mr. and Ms. Buying public were so oriented. 

Having started watching birds when it 

was a quaint closet avocation, I find birding’s 

current mainstream popularity almost 

disconcerting. While engaging and easy to 

do, bird watching is not for everyone. First 

you need to like going outside. This means 

that you are sometimes cold, sometimes hot, 

sometimes wet. Weather doesn’t determine 

whether there will be birds but where and in 

what numbers. 

Some of your greatest birding moments 

may result from inclement weather. Migrating 

birds, running into a wall of water, often land 

and wait for more favorable conditions. The 

late, great Harold Atell once told me about 

a grounding he witnessed at Point Pelee in 

Ontario. It’s celebrated for its Spring bird 

concentrations — Cape May is famous for Fall 

bird concentrations. Harold, who spent his 

falls in Cape May, allowed that on that Spring 

day in Point Pelee, he came upon an exhausted 

Magnolia Warbler, asleep in a puddle. So 

spent was the bird after what must have been 

a harrowing night of travel over open water, 

it did not even waken as Harold set it on a 

branch. So inclement weather is bad for birds, 

but a bonus for birders. 

Cape May gets short shrift and our Spring 

bird fallouts can be as substantial as anywhere 

in North America. 

Not every day of birding is so exciting, 

but all are engaging, and Cape May is certainly 

the place to be. Every season offers its 

own special blend of birds and opportunities. 

So, if you are ready to join North America’s 

fastest growing outdoor activity. Why not 

now? Spring migration runs into June and fall 

migration begins on the first day of Summer 

when the first southbound shorebirds begin 

flooding Cape May’s wetlands. Check out

me binoculars are flying off the shelves but

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, rent a surrey! 

Take a surrey bike ride on the first day 

of your Cape May vacation. 

Surrey bikes are a way for the 

whole family to see the town. Think 

of them as the descendants of the 

bath chairs that Victorian-era tourists used. 

Chairs that looked like wicker baskets were 

invented in 1750 by a man named James 

Heath, who modified wheelchairs for use 

by wealthy visitors to health spas. Victorian 

doctors advocated trips to the sea to cure 

all kinds of ailments, asserting that “activated 

oxygen” was the key to health. Patients 

with difficulty walking found Heath’s “rolling 

chairs” useful. The early chairs were private, 

and stylish users personalized them, sometimes 

matching their clothing, and the livery 

of the servant pushing, to the chair. Demand 

for the chairs by non-disabled people led to 

a robust rental market, and they were soon 

available at campgrounds and other resorts in 

addition to seaside towns. Hiring a chair let 

tourists “take the air” in their finest clothes, 

allowing them to see and be seen, even if they 

couldn’t “promenade.” Chaperones in chairs 

followed strolling couples and grandparents 

used them to keep up with grandchildren. 

Rolling chairs let a Victorian-era family take 

an outing together, just as a modern family 

can in a surrey bike. 

Rent a surrey to get your bearings if you’re 

a newcomer to Cape May. If you’re returning 

after a year, take a ride and discover the 

changes in town. Choose your restaurants for 

the week, the mini-golf course the kids like, 

and the beach that meets your needs. Kids 

who are too little to pedal can come along for 

the ride, and older family members can take a 

break now and then. You’ll get some exercise 

and protection from the sun. 

Surreys can be heavy to pedal, so keep 

a balance between the pedalers and the 

non-pedalers. Take your pictures at the beginning 

of the ride before you start sweating. 

Have a general destination, but be flexible. 

Stop for a moment if someone wants to look at 

the dolphins or a pretty garden. Pay attention 

to the wind — it’s only about two miles from 

the Cove Beach to Poverty Beach, but it feels a 

lot longer when the wind is against you. One 

person, who can follow the rules of the road, 

will have control of the brakes and steering 

— they should NOT be the videographer. Stop 

and switch if everyone wants a turn. Bring 

water and a backpack — not every surrey has a 

basket. You will attract waves and other attention 

in your cheerful conveyance — wave back 

at little kids and ring the bell for them.

polite, we try to ignore his bad behavior and 

make the best of things. That’s fine with just 

the immediate family, but what do we do when 

out-of-town guests arrive? I feel it will reflect 

badly on my wife and I as hosts. But what to do

at the new plants and buy yourself something 

special that will grow and remind you of this 

reunion and dispel any unpleasantries.

I have a friend who is not from this country. 

When I meet her and ask how she is, she tells 

me in explicit detail. She volunteers personal 

information I have no right or desire to know, 

and she drones on in a monotonous manner. 

I want to explain to her in explicit detail that 

we, as Americans, are a superficial people and 

when we ask politely, “How are you?” We don’t 

expect anything except a perfunctory answer. 

As in, “I’m fine. How are you?” I’m guessing 

this is unacceptable. — Mr. Superficiality

You charmer you. One suggestion would 

be to simply say, “Hello,” and begin your own 

lament or excitement about something, ending 

with “Good to see you.” Then leave. One 

thing you should not do is ASK HER HOW 

SHE IS. There are many conversation intros 

that can avoid this slippery slope because silly 

her thinking if you ask the question, you actually 

want her to answer it. Or offer to buy her a 

café mocha at Coffee Tyme or Ostara’s. Hard to 

complain while drinking.
