Nationalism and Universalism in Italian and European Historybeen a positive or negative one?Hard to answer such a questionin the light of what we have justexplored above. What remainsparadoxical in all this is thatEurope now claims to haveabandoned nationalism foreverfor a sort of unifying federalismcalled the EU. Some no longerspeak of the European Union butof the United States of Europewhere nations govern themselvesinternally but contribute toa unified political goal and acommon cultural identity and inthe ideal spirit of solidarity andbrotherhood, equality and liberty. But is this a reality as we speak? What about the rabid regionalismof an Umberto Bossi out to declareindependence from Italy. Is thatuniversalism or parochialism ofthe worst kind? Were not egalitè, fraternitè,libertè also the ideals of theFrench revolution? When thingswere going well economically, this seemed indeed to be the casein the EU. Now that hard financialtimes are upon us in the West as awhole, words like solidarity seemto have suddenly disappearedfrom the vocabulary. Whatone ears is the cold utilitarianlanguage of the bureaucrat, thebanker and the venture capitalistdevoid of humanistic criteria, euphemistically characterizing hiscapitalistic activity, based on socialDarwinism, as entrepreneurship, abysmally ignorant of the genuineheritage of European civilization.Which leads one to suspect thatonce again, just as with Italianunification, the cart has been putbefore the horse and the Europeancultural identity remains elusiveat best. Indeed, we live in a BraveNew World.12
