Our Mother’s Cry
For my creative project assignment I decided to compose and produce an instrumental
piece. At first, I did not know exactly what I wanted the piece to be about, but that did not take
long. At the beginning of the semester we watched a Bill Moyers documentary. One of the
people being interviewed was Sallie McFague, an American feminist Christian theologian. She
stated, “Now we did feel at home on the earth I think something else would happen, we would
learn to love it.” That one sentence stayed with me the entire semester, I think about it every
single day. Mcfague continues explaining how since we separate ourselves from nature and the
environment, we treat the planet as if it is not worth anything. We have destroyed our planet for
the benefit of our own well being. We do not care about the animals or our significant
contribution to climate change.
I titled my piece “Our Mother’s Cry.” This song is about Mother Nature crying out to us
humans because we caused so much destruction. I wanted the audience to feel what we did to her
through music. I wanted to create a voice for our planet since we act oblivious to our wrong
doings. At 0:26 seconds into the song I use a piano to symbolize Mother Nature’s voice. I believe
this is a very emotional instrument and can tell a story better than any other. I added rain and
thunder to represent her tears and outburst. I made sure the cries of animals were heard as well.
We have ruined so many of their innocent lives for absolutely no reason at all. You will also hear
violin, this instrument has a very delicate yet powerful at the same time. My song is at a slow
pace in order to represent sadness. I also made sure to incorporate minor chords. In music, minor
chords can represent darkness. An example of this is in horror movies when a pop up is about to
take place. I hope anyone who takes the time to listen to my piece helps make the world a better
place. We cannot afford to harm our home anymore. We need to view our planet and our
well-being as one.
