Knaresborough Now and Wetherby Now are the area’s biggest community magazines and are produced monthly to help support local

businesses. When Knaresborough Now was originally created in 2010, it was realised that people wanted more than just adverts –

readers wanted something which reflected the vibrant and eclectic nature of Knaresborough and the surrounding villages. In 2013, we

introduced an online business directory and more interactive CLAIM websiteYOUR

with links to many other local organisations. In 2017, based

on demand from readers and businesses we created Wetherby Now. The two magazines have since grown in their distribution to over

May is the month where myself

and my family start to embrace

the warmer weather as we try to

get out and about in nature to

make the most of the two UK bank

holidays. So I was particularly

pleased to notice that the week

of 3 rd to 9 th May 2021 has been

designated International Screen

Free Week. This is where parents

and children are encouraged to

unplug from their devices for a day,

or a week, or just for a few hours

daily and use the opportunity to

do something else – read, go for

a walk, bake a cake – whatever

it takes to enjoy the analogue

world for a change! More details

We’re delighted to see that more

and more local small businesses

are re-opening after a such a

challenging year and have been

busier than ever helping them

plan their marketing campaigns

and finding the best options for

them to reach their ideal target

audience. We’re full of admiration

for how they’ve weathered the

storm and adapted to succeed in

2021 and beyond. It’s wonderful

to see that shopping locally has

become very important for our

communities with most people

now determined to keep spending

money with local businesses even

when all restrictions are lifted.

Swedish thriller

– the first of a

trilogy – was a

huge hit. It was

a time when

Nordic Noir was

just starting to

take off in this

country and remains a classic of the

genre. So I was interested to see if it

stood up to a re-read 12 years later, and it

certainly does.

Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative

journalist but a recent article about the

wealthy Swedish financier Wennerstrom

has landed him with a two month prison

sentence for libel. But while waiting for his

sentence to begin Blomkvist receives an

unusual job offer from millionaire

industrialist Henrik Vanger. He wants

Blomkvist to investigate the murder of his

great-niece, Harriet, forty years earlier. He

takes the job, moving to the island where

the Vangers live. He ends up turning to

computer hacker Lisbeth Slanader for

help, a young woman who has no

tolerance for others, society, or the law.

Mickey has four sisters, and three of them

are older than him. He doesn’t get on with

them and is frequently teased. Then on

night his parents go out, leaving the three

older girls, Meryl, Mandy, and Mona, in

charge. Delighted to have the house to

themselves the girls decide to watch

Savage Snarl a scary werewolf movie.

And it really IS scary. Even the older girls

think so.

But for Mickey it has a lasting effect: he

becomes scared of dogs. Unsure what to

do, his mum decides that the only real

solution is to buy Mickey a puppy of his

own! Dragged to the dog rescue home

Mickey would rather be anywhere else

until he encounters one puppy who bites

his younger sister’s finger. Could this be

Mickey’s very own werewolf – or

werepuppy!

Wolfie, as he is called, is no ordinary

puppy and turns out to be the best pet

that any boy could ask for!

What appears to be a simple thriller on

the surface offers so much more. From

corruption in Swedish society to attitudes

towards women in Sweden, this evocative

novel is satisfying, if violent. As a reader

you feel part of the action as you move

with the characters from Sweden to

Hebdy Island. Here, more than in many

other novels, the geography of Sweden

feels like a character in its own right and

the mood of the characters and the pace

itself cleverly switches as we move from

one to the other. For me this was the most

freedom to stipulate what

happens to their assets once

they are gone, as well as set

guardians for children, include

provision for the care of pets

and allocate cherished personal

belongings to family and friends.


Marie Curie’s Free Will-Writing Service

Without a Will, the rules of

intestacy come into play - based

on the degrees of relationships

so it would be the closest

relatives who would benefit.

Time and again, people put off

writing a Will as they are unsure

how to fairly divide their assets.

And today’s family dynamics

such as second marriages,

step children and half siblings

can add to the pressure. Or it

might even be that an individual

has a closer relationship with

someone who is not a blood

relative. A large part of our

role is to provide guidance,

advice and support in order to

help our clients reach the right

decision for them during what

which may have something to do with

at all to do with politics should have

some influence this season. I’m not

saying that you’re going to be standing

SCORPIO (Oct 23 rd - Nov 22 nd ) : This could

Q My boyfriend and I have

decided to split up after one

year in lockdown together.

I am sad, confused and I

wonder if I am doing the

right thing. I feel depressed

and alone.

A It may seem logical

that managing difficult

emotions, such as sadness,

involves not doing things

that add to those emotions

or make them stronger.

However, this is harder than

it sounds. When you are

depressed, you probably

will not naturally choose to

be around happy people.

You are more likely to seek

out others who are also

unhappy. If you are angry

with someone, you may

think of more reasons to

be angry with that person,

with the result that you

stay angry longer. If you

have just broken up with a

romantic partner, you will

be drawn to sad songs.

The good news is there are

many ways that you can

keep yourself from making

difficult emotions more

intense. Your emotions

can blind you to the facts

about people or a situation

that do not support

the emotions you are

Q Before the pandemic I

was always uncomfortable

and awkward in social

groups. And now that we

are coming out of lock

down, I feel like it is going

to be even worse now. I

know a lot of people are

saying they are going to be

ready to socialise because

they have not had the

opportunity in a while. The

situation for me fills me with

dread, as I have become

accustomed to being in

my comfort zone, and

my anxiety has remained

unchallenged.

A I think a lot of people

have looked on social media

and made assumptions that

most people are thriving

and that everything will be

back to normal immediately.

This is highly unlikely for

many people and trying to

compare what other people

are saying is unhelpful

and highly unlikely. My

advice is to start by taking

small steps. Letting go

of self-judgments, other

people’s judgments of you

and your judgments of

others, whether positive

or negative, is one way

of keeping your emotions

at lower intensity. When


you replace judgements

with facts, you will react

less to misinterpretations,

assumptions and

distortions about events

and people, and you will

find the solution that fits

what you want and need.

As we come out of

lockdown are you finding
