Knaresborough Now and Wetherby Now are the area’s biggest community magazines and are produced monthly to help support local

businesses. When Knaresborough Now was originally created in 2010, it was realised that people wanted more than just adverts –

readers wanted something which reflected the vibrant and eclectic nature of Knaresborough and the surrounding villages. In 2013, we

introduced an online business directory and more interactive CLAIM websiteYOUR

with links to many other local organisations. In 2017, based

on demand from readers and businesses we created Wetherby Now. The two magazines have since grown in their distribution to over

Dear Readers ...

May is the month where myself

and my family start to embrace

the warmer weather as we try to

get out and about in nature to

make the most of the two UK bank

holidays. So I was particularly

pleased to notice that the week

of 3 rd to 9 th May 2021 has been

designated International Screen

Free Week. This is where parents

and children are encouraged to

unplug from their devices for a day,

or a week, or just for a few hours

daily and use the opportunity to

do something else – read, go for

a walk, bake a cake – whatever

it takes to enjoy the analogue

world for a change! More details

and resources are available at

screenfree.org.

We’re delighted to see that more

and more local small businesses

are re-opening after a such a

challenging year and have been

busier than ever helping them

plan their marketing campaigns

and finding the best options for

them to reach their ideal target

audience. We’re full of admiration

for how they’ve weathered the

storm and adapted to succeed in

2021 and beyond. It’s wonderful

to see that shopping locally has

become very important for our

communities with most people

now determined to keep spending

money with local businesses even

when all restrictions are lifted.

We hope this is the beginnings of

a small business revival and we’ll

always be here to help.

Until next month ...

Local Planning Alerts

You would probably know if your next door neighbour was building an extension, but, would

you know what a developer’s plans were for the local village hall, the pub down the road

or the nearby fields and woodland? The answer is probably not. Unless you were avidly

monitoring the council websites or stopping at every green council notice on a lamppost for a

read then there is little chance you would get this information.

Did you know that you can register for Planning Alerts to be sent to your email? This is a

completely free service to keep you informed of any planning applications submitted within a

radius of your choosing, allowing you to stay up-to-date on all plans in your area.

Achieve Your Goals

Do you want to turn things around and start

achieving your goals today?

Do you feel like you need some help, but don’t

know where to turn? Would you like a skilled

mentor to support you to move forwards with

your life? Do you dream of a brighter future, but

are not sure how to get there?

If you’re an adult and not working and would love

support to get ready for work or training in the

future, Action Towards Inclusion is for you.

Action Towards Inclusion offers a range of

mentoring support and specialist help through a

partnership of local community organisations in York, North Yorkshire and the East Riding.

Over 2400 people have taken up the offer of help and many have been supported into work

and training. However, the mentoring and specialist support can help with confidence building,

mental well being and much more…

“My physical and mental health have improved as I have started to think about things

differently and feel that I’m in a much better place”

Selby AVS participant

“I feel a lot more confident learning over the internet and via zoom than before. Additionally,

everyone has been really nice which has put me at ease. I have developed much more selfconfidence.

I now don’t feel as self-conscious standing up for myself.”

A Good Read ...

The Girl with

the Dragon

Tattoo by

Stieg Larsson

First published

in English just

over a decade

ago this

Swedish thriller

– the first of a

trilogy – was a

huge hit. It was

a time when

Nordic Noir was

just starting to

take off in this

country and remains a classic of the

genre. So I was interested to see if it

stood up to a re-read 12 years later, and it

certainly does.

Mikael Blomkvist is an investigative

journalist but a recent article about the

wealthy Swedish financier Wennerstrom

has landed him with a two month prison

sentence for libel. But while waiting for his

sentence to begin Blomkvist receives an

unusual job offer from millionaire

industrialist Henrik Vanger. He wants

Blomkvist to investigate the murder of his

great-niece, Harriet, forty years earlier. He

takes the job, moving to the island where

the Vangers live. He ends up turning to

computer hacker Lisbeth Slanader for

help, a young woman who has no

tolerance for others, society, or the law.

satisfying part of this exemplar of the

Nordic Noir genre.

The Werepuppy by Jacqueline Wilson

Mickey has four sisters, and three of them

are older than him. He doesn’t get on with

them and is frequently teased. Then on

night his parents go out, leaving the three

older girls, Meryl, Mandy, and Mona, in

charge. Delighted to have the house to

themselves the girls decide to watch

Savage Snarl a scary werewolf movie.

And it really IS scary. Even the older girls

think so.

But for Mickey it has a lasting effect: he

becomes scared of dogs. Unsure what to

do, his mum decides that the only real

solution is to buy Mickey a puppy of his

own! Dragged to the dog rescue home

Mickey would rather be anywhere else

until he encounters one puppy who bites

his younger sister’s finger. Could this be

Mickey’s very own werewolf – or

werepuppy!

Wolfie, as he is called, is no ordinary

puppy and turns out to be the best pet

that any boy could ask for!

What appears to be a simple thriller on

the surface offers so much more. From

corruption in Swedish society to attitudes

towards women in Sweden, this evocative

novel is satisfying, if violent. As a reader

you feel part of the action as you move

with the characters from Sweden to

Hebdy Island. Here, more than in many

other novels, the geography of Sweden

feels like a character in its own right and

the mood of the characters and the pace

itself cleverly switches as we move from

one to the other. For me this was the most

Community Spirit : A Little Goes A Long Way

This spring has felt like a

new beginning in so many

ways. After the easing of

lockdown restrictions, we’ve

had the chance to explore

our local areas again and

remind ourselves what

normal life looks like! Though

safety remains a priority, we

can now enjoy the simple

pleasures of popping to

the shops, seeing people

in person, visiting our local

markets, and rediscovering

family activities.

While we may no longer

rely solely on our support

networks for comfort and

company, the great news is

that these ‘bubbles’ don’t

have to burst after lockdown.

Our region is blessed with

a wide variety of brilliant

businesses, groups and

individuals all striving to

create caring communities

that we can become a

part of. Here are just a few

suggestions…

Spending more time with

family and friends will

continue to be important,

especially with greater

flexibility when it comes to

meeting face to face. Just

add a tasty lunch and a

scenic view for the perfect

day out! Knaresborough’s

River Nidd is a glorious

spot with all sorts of

14

tempting treats, be it from

the Marigold or Riverside

cafes, The Black Mulberry or

The Ugly Duckling. Maybe

have a wander through the

delightful offerings of their

Wednesday market!

don’t let those

bubbles burst!

Over in Wetherby, Pomfrets

and North Street Deli have

an array of local delicacies,

or why not explore the

takeaway options on offer

at the return of the town’s

Thursday market? For

any birthdays or special

occasions coming up

info@knaresboroughnow.co.uk or info@wetherbynow.co.uk

(including Father’s Day in

June), you can still order

and collect cakes, bakes

and sweets from Costello’s

Bakery to devour at home.

From toys and games to

crafts and sports, kids of all

ages are spoilt for choice by

our local shops. Treasures

toyshop in Wetherby has

everything you might

need to keep little ones

entertained, including a

fantastic selection of kites.

For teenagers, try Castlegate

Books in Knaresborough for

a great range of Young Adult

novels and non-fiction.

Or perhaps you need a

wardrobe update? With

sustainability in mind, why

not pick up your summer

outfits from one of our many

local charity shops? Or if it’s

accessories you’re looking

for, head to Wetherby for

Azuzu’s divine designer

jewellery and Olivia Grace’s

exclusive stylish handbags.

Whatever your plans for the

next few weeks, let’s start as

we mean to go on – staying

safe, caring for one another,

and making the most of our

local communities.

Elaine Lightfoot

Head of Private Clients

McCormicks Solicitors,

Harrogate

During March, McCormicks

Solicitors has been supporting

Marie Curie through the

National Free Wills Network,

offering to write a simple Will for

free to the supporters of a range

of charities as well as a way to

say thank you and help people

plan for the future.

Elaine Lightfoot is on a mission

to encourage more people to

write a Will. Here, she outlines

why it’s important to seek

professional advice and how

straightforward it is to leave

Gifts in Wills to charities of your

choice.

“The fundamental reason why

everyone should have a Will is

that it makes things easier for

the people that are left behind

– it can eliminate added stress

when loved ones are grieving.

But it also allows people the

freedom to stipulate what

happens to their assets once

they are gone, as well as set

out funeral wishes, appoint

guardians for children, include

provision for the care of pets

and allocate cherished personal

belongings to family and friends.

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

Marie Curie’s Free Will-Writing Service

Without a Will, the rules of

intestacy come into play - based

on the degrees of relationships

so it would be the closest

relatives who would benefit.

Time and again, people put off

writing a Will as they are unsure

how to fairly divide their assets.

And today’s family dynamics

such as second marriages,

step children and half siblings

can add to the pressure. Or it

might even be that an individual

has a closer relationship with

someone who is not a blood

relative. A large part of our

role is to provide guidance,

advice and support in order to

help our clients reach the right

decision for them during what

can invariably be an emotional

process. We can provide a series

of tailor-made options from

excluding an estranged family

member to suggesting how

uneven shares can be divided

between the same category of

relation.

Whilst there are cost effective

options available online, which

can be effective when a situation

is straightforward, they don’t

necessarily make provision

for the possibility of different

scenarios. There are so many

ponderables – what happens if

a beneficiary dies first or your

financial situation changes?

That’s why I would always

recommend having a Will

drafted by a professional. It’s

actually incredibly cost effective

given that you could be saving

your loved ones a lot of time,

trouble, worry and expense.

A further benefit of writing

a Will is that people get the

opportunity to support their

favoured charities too, like Marie

Curie, by opting to donate a

fixed sum or a percentage of the

estate.”

As the UK’s leading end of life

charity, Marie Curie is here to

support everyone in the UK

through all aspects of dying,

death and bereavement – and

to fight for a society where

everyone gets to have the best

experience possible at the end

of their lives. The charity works

with the NHS to provide frontline

care, offers vital bereavement

support for family and friends

and helps the nation prepare for

death.

Gifts in Wills are hugely

important to Marie Curie.

More than a third of the care

and support that the charity

provided last year was paid for

by gifts in peoples’ wills. This

adds up to around 18,000

people getting vital care and

support at the end of their lives.

Any gift, large or small, will help

Marie Curie nurses to be there

for people who need them.

Anyone aged over 18 can

access Marie Curie’s free

participating solicitors such as

no obligation to leave a gift to

Marie Curie, any gift will make

a big difference to people living

with a terminal illness and their

ARIES (Mar 20 th - Apr 19 th ) :

A brighter month across the board,

which may have something to do with

the weather and the longer days, but

more probably to do with new work

interests falling into place which give you

a sense of purpose and direction. The 1 st week of May

favours all family matters, the 2 nd week you speculate

to accumulate where money is concerned, and the 2 nd

half of May is all about romance and relationships.

TAURUS (Apr 20 th - May 21 st ): You

go through May in a curious state of

mind. You strive to change what can

be changed, and accept those things

which you cannot. This brings a quality

of calm and acceptance and a lot of the

tension which has been with you for such a long time

now begins to evaporate. There is a wonderful bond of

closeness prevailing in all emotional relationships, and

especially between partners and spouses.

GEMINI (May 22 nd - Jun 21 st ) :

Quite a lot of domestic activity this month

with DIY projects and home improvement

schemes. Some notable improvements

in relationships you’d all but given up

on and some good news concerning all

matters connected with health. Not a lot happening

where jobs and money are concerned, but as far as

I can see, neither are there any threats or dangers in

this aspect of your life.

CANCER (Jun 22 nd - Jul 23 rd ) : Not a lot

happening in The House of Cancer this

month and that could be a blessing in

disguise giving you some quiet time for

reflection, and if necessary, for healing…

both physical and emotional wounds.

While there are no scintillating highs, nor are there any

great lows, and you’ll find yourself taking enjoyment

out of the simple things in life. You might want to make

contact with a few old friends, just to keep in touch.

LEO (Jul 24 th - Aug 23 rd ) : May brings

a boost of physical energy which

might have something to do with the

spring weather ... but could as easily

be associated with a new sense of

enthusiasm and also a new sense of

freedom! If you’re looking for change, or indeed any

kind of adventure, now is the time to go searching for

it – and you’ve got a damned good chance of finding it.

Job aspects are sound, but not a lot happening where

romance is concerned. Sorry!

VIRGO (Aug 24 th - Sep 23 rd ) : An

interesting period for ladies in their

mid-twenties to mid-thirties. Romance

beckons, but with a couple of risks. If

you want the omelette you’re going to

have to break the eggs! Virgo men in their

‘middle’ years get some good news in connection with

jobs and careers, and ‘senior members of the sign’

start doing silly things to prove that there is many a

good tune in an old fiddle.

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

Horoscopes

LIBRA (Sep 24 th – Oct 22 nd ) : Anything

at all to do with politics should have

some influence this season. I’m not

saying that you’re going to be standing

for parliament, but you’ll certainly be

standing up for other people and doing

your best to right a few wrongs: concomitant with

this, anything to do with charities and committees

will have a role to play, and it would be good if you

could see yourself as a leader rather than a follower.

SCORPIO (Oct 23 rd - Nov 22 nd ) : This could

really be a fun month for Scorpios, on

condition (a) you take what opportunities

come your way, but (b) don’t take life

too seriously. For good or bad, jobs are

just jobs, but the activity this month is

on social aspects, with an intriguingly sexy flavour of

romance. Being realistic, if you’re old and knackered

like me, maybe it’s just a case of ‘perchance to dream’

but when you get to my age that’s better than nothing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 rd - Dec 22 nd ):

The last couple of months may have been

trying, but you’ve learned a lot, and your

outlook on life may be just a little different

to what it was back at the beginning of

March. There may not be many nights of

wild passion, but a relationship with a lover or spouse

is probably stronger than ever, born of understanding,

care and mutual respect. Don’t take these things for

granted - recognise and celebrate them.

CAPRICORN (Dec 23 rd - Jan 20 th ) :

As per usual, most of your concerns this

month are focused on the welfare and

wellbeing of other people, and perhaps

one person in particular. This is to be

admired, but please pay some attention

to your own needs! There is some good news where

health aspects are concerned, but in your working life,

be a little on guard in your dealings with a female friend

or colleague. Trust your own judgement rather than

theirs. Busy time on the work scene.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 st - Feb 18 th ): There

is likely to be some ongoing friction

throughout May in connection with

financial priorities. You will prioritise

one thing while a spouse or partner will

be prioritising another. Therefore, some

domestic tensions will be noticeable until maybe the

20 th or 21 st at which time workable compromises

can be found and things can calm down and get

back to normal.

PISCES (Feb 19 th - Mar 19 th ) : A same

sex friend will be very helpful and useful

in opening a career opportunity for you.

Try not to be suspicious, because they

do have your best interests at heart.

Somewhere, vaguely in the middle of the

month, you could be spending a chunk of money on

an item of desire, which with hindsight, will be seen as

a necessary expense or investment. A reunion with an

old friend looks probable before month’s end.

Q My boyfriend and I have

decided to split up after one

year in lockdown together.

I am sad, confused and I

wonder if I am doing the

right thing. I feel depressed

and alone.

A It may seem logical

that managing difficult

emotions, such as sadness,

involves not doing things

that add to those emotions

or make them stronger.

However, this is harder than

it sounds. When you are

depressed, you probably

will not naturally choose to

be around happy people.

You are more likely to seek

out others who are also

unhappy. If you are angry

with someone, you may

think of more reasons to

be angry with that person,

with the result that you

stay angry longer. If you

have just broken up with a

romantic partner, you will

be drawn to sad songs.

The good news is there are

many ways that you can

keep yourself from making

difficult emotions more

intense. Your emotions

can blind you to the facts

about people or a situation

that do not support

are coming out of lock

down, I feel like it is going

to be even worse now. I

know a lot of people are

saying they are going to be

ready to socialise because

they have not had the

opportunity in a while. The

situation for me fills me with

dread, as I have become

accustomed to being in

my comfort zone, and

my anxiety has remained

unchallenged.

A I think a lot of people

have looked on social media

and made assumptions that

most people are thriving

and that everything will be

back to normal immediately.

This is highly unlikely for

many people and trying to

compare what other people

are saying is unhelpful

and highly unlikely. My

advice is to start by taking

small steps. Letting go

of self-judgments, other

people’s judgments of you

and your judgments of

others, whether positive

or negative, is one way

of keeping your emotions

at lower intensity. When

info@knaresboroughnow.co.uk or info@wetherbynow.co.uk

you replace judgements

with facts, you will react

less to misinterpretations,

assumptions and

distortions about events

and people, and you will

find the solution that fits

what you want and need.

As we come out of

lockdown are you finding

yourself filled with

dread at the prospect of

socialising again?

Have you grown into a

new comfort zone inside

your own home?

Whilst on the surface it

looks like most people

are happy to be out and

about but below the

surface stress is still at an

all time high, nerves will

continue to be frayed and

fuses shortened for quite

some time to come.

If you’d like to talk

through your stresses

and fears, find new ways

of coping with our new

way of life then please get

in touch.

I am offering courses

of Skype counselling at

reduced rates for anyone
