E D I T O R ‘ S N O T E
The general public, local
companies, and political
officials appear unified
in welcoming the post-COVID
recovery as a rare chance to
fundamentally reinvent the way
we live in our neighborhoods
as communities and whole
countries recover from
lockdowns but continue to
suffer instability. Transportation
is at the forefront of this, as is
pushing for a greener revival.
In the long run, societies must
ensure a resilient rehabilitation
in order to be more prepared
to survive potential stressors
like another lockdown or other
unforeseen shocks.
Construction Industry
Road to Recovery After
the Pandemic
To do so, decision-makers
must ensure that the five
resilience values (people,
design, planning, digital,
and sustainability) are
taken into account during
recovery efforts. People are
the only thing that makes
societies, towns, families, and
organizations sustainable,
so keeping people safe and
secure must be at the heart
of each of the four aspects
of recovery planning. The
architecture and development
strategies put in place in
response to the pandemic
to ensure that people are
comfortable moving through
urban spaces should be
carefully watched.
They can also be incorporated
as part of a broader plan
for more reliable and
robust infrastructure and
transportation networks, given
the possibility of revival and
potential stressors. Recovery
planning would have the same
attention to sustainability as
resilience planning in order to
maintain environmental gains.
The environment’s health and
protection, as the health and
welfare of our citizens, must
be of utmost importance.
Sustainability should be
introduced into any step of the
recovery process, since it is
a critical component of longterm
resilience.
Finally, digitization empowers
all aspects of life. In the short
term, data allows competitive
pricing to assist transportation
providers in maintaining
market continuity, as well as
effectively steering people
and car traffic in real time to
ensure safe passage and
optimal delivery of people in
urban centers. Longer-term
surveillance will aid everybody
in making better decisions,
resulting in more resilient
economies.
This is something that has
already occurring. In areas
such as urban planning,
transportation management,
and infrastructure delivery,
innovative solutions have been
created. These have shown
to be effective in assisting
individuals in changing
their lifestyles, traveling and
working in new ways, and
making more sustainable and
healthy decisions.

Why Choose Lincoln Electric
Welding in a Jobsite
Last month April was the National Welding Month and every mechanical and electrical
engineer around the world are aware of this yearly celebration. Now is a great time to
learn more about the arts, craft and various techniques. Welding has always been a critical
component of many industries. Without this form of metal work, at least 70% of all manufactured
products would not exist. In fact, the world we live in is built by welders.
That is why it is but necessary for them to use a trusted brand to deliver continuous improvement of
safety, quality and productivity. Lincoln Electric provides such solutions for industry-leading, global
partners.
Dual Maverick 450
The Dual Maverick 450 is a twoin-one
welder designed for use on
building sites, pipelines, and leasing
fleets. Powered by a 26.4 HP Perkins®
D403-11 diesel engine, this welder/
generator has sufficient power for two
operators to weld simultaneously or
for one operator to gouge with a 3/8
in. (9.5 mm) carbon.
This significantly reduces costs and
boost productivity as two welders can
use one equipment at the same time.
It also shows maintenance updates
to help extend the engine’s life and
stability and adjusts the engine’s RPM
based on the amount of welding
output to conserve fuel.
8
On top of that, Dual Maverick 450’s desert duty rating is a perfect
fit for harsh environments. It has a total of 13,000 watts auxiliary
power and an additional inverter to be used when welding amps are
within the machine capability. Its 100% duty cycle comes in 450a
single mode or 225a dual mode.
Invertec ® V275
The Invertec® V275-S stick and TIG power source is designed for
use on outdoor building sites due to its IP23S rating and weatherresistant
technology. With an output of up to 275 amps, you can
utilize a wider variety of stick electrodes.
This includes the exceptional E6010 and E7018 performance,
enabling both whip and drag techniques for a variety of
construction and fabrication applications. Complete with an input
voltage setting of 208/230/460/575 1/3 60htz and 100% Duty Cycle
200a, this welder provides Stick/Tig/Gouging process.

to 600 volts, 50 or 60 hertz. This makes cutting output constant throughout the
entire input voltage range.
Its new electrode and nozzle design also save you money in the long run. Our
Parts-in-Place system detects correct installation of consumables and torch, so
you don’t have to worry about safety and reliability.
Additionally, Tomahawk 1000 is engine drive compatible. Simply select a Lincoln

Life is returning to the highways as cities deal with a slew
of unknowns, including the possibility of occasional
lockdowns. This may be a turning point for positive
progress and a green resurgence. Rather than reverting
to pre-pandemic levels of resilience, we should prepare to
move on to more resilient and sustainable transit networks
and structures.
25
C O V E R
S T O R Y
Change Commuter Behavior
Many residents, as we saw at the height of city lockdowns, were
remarkably able to adjust their behaviors in order to limit the
spread of the virus. Although the majority of essential workers
returned to work during the outbreak, the bulk of the public
remained at home. With restrictions relaxing and a mass return to
work in some cities, local governments and transportation owners
and operators are looking for safer ways to manage increasing
passenger demand.
This emphasis on the shift in behavior is critical for securing
the environmental advantages of fewer vehicles, as well as the
resulting congestion, noise, and emissions.
More citizens walking and cycling can better balance and
optimize passenger congestion on trains, metros, and buses, as
well as ease pressure on private automobiles, but companies
will also help manage transit demand in other ways. Discussions
among employees on how often and where they need to be in the
workforce, as well as staggering commuting times to and from
work, are crucial.
Adopt dynamic pricing
Reduce fare sales and introduce new price strategies to redefine
mass transit revenue. Authorities and mass transit owners and
providers will start focusing further on rebalancing their wages
and further stimulating desirable habits after they’ve reached
the desired balance of transport mode capability, developed an
awareness of emerging commuting and leisure travel trends, and
partnered with organizations to drive improvements in commuter
behaviors. With the sharply decreased ridership, many networks’
profits have plummeted to unacceptable amounts. Dynamic
pricing is one of the demand management techniques that
aims to better refine the allocation of travelers through modes of
transportation, allowing for social distancing and fund recovery.
Dynamic pricing, which is now widely used in the hotel, vacation,
and airline sectors, ensures that charges can be modified
proactively to manipulate travel behavior against target trends
using smart algorithms. This can be a valuable means of assisting
travelers in traveling in a comfortable distanced atmosphere while
still maximizing the use of limited transit resources as implemented
in transportation networks and services. However, where ridership
is significantly reduced and kept secure, public subsidies would
be needed to supplement revenues. The private train operator
model, such as the rail franchises in the United Kingdom, is being
put to the test.

C O V E R
S T O R Y
Rethinking private car use
Encourage people to transition to electric vehicles and other alternative
means of transportation by actively managing the desire many people have
to return to or expand their use of private cars.
There has been an increase in the use of private cars in areas where certain
residents feel uncomfortable using public transportation or live a long way
from urban centers.
Although it is difficult to guess how we will travel in cities in the future, one
thing is certain: a return to pre-COVID-19 traffic congestion levels will be a
shame. This will be a wasted opportunity to have a slew of advantages to
city dwellers, including shorter travel times and improved citizen welfare
as a result of lower air pollution levels. Another option for getting people
out of their vehicles is to gradually re-establish confidence in public transit
services.
40
Redesign for active mobility
Promote a more permanent shift toward active mobility by using proactive
urbanism tactics to incorporate interventions in the urban landscape at
reduced rates and a strategy for evaluating their feasibility and performance.
The idea of active mobility has a number of advantages, including
offering alternate means of transportation for individuals who may not use
public transportation or who may be tempted to drive. Multiple means of
transportation can be used to complete a trip, such as using suburban rail to
enter a transportation hub where a bicycle can be picked up to complete the
journey.
Bicycle highways are being built in several countries to allow for mid-distance
travel without stopping and to provide a protected space for high-speed
cycling, such as with power assisted electric bikes. This significantly expands
the catchment area for cycling commutes, and the associated decreases in
congestion and noise favor the environment.

How Does An Engineer Change
Career Paths
There’s no doubt that engineering can be a seriously
challenging field. It’s one that can come with all kinds
of stress and obstacles that you need to overcome. The
reality is that working as an engineer isn’t something that
everyone necessarily wants to do. Of course, if you find yourself
in a position where you’re considering some kind of career
change, you don’t just need to throw away all of the valuable
knowledge and experience that you have gathered as an
engineer. With that in mind, here are just a few things that you
might want to consider as an engineer contemplating a career
change.
Upward career movement
The most obvious thing to consider when looking to make
a career change as an engineer is to climb up the ladder.
There are all kinds of ways that you can climb the ladder. The
key is to make sure that you know where your skills can take
you. This could mean anything from taking on a design role
in an architectural firm to working on large scale government
contracts. The key is to know what specific abilities you can
bring to any role and how you can continue to rise up through
the ranks to achieve your goals.
60
A lateral career change
Of course, you may find that moving up the career ladder
as an engineer doesn’t provide the change that you might
otherwise have wanted. Instead, think about what it is that
you’re looking to get out of a career change. It could be that
you want more freedom and working on a more freelance
basis is the best option for you. Or perhaps you’re looking for
something completely new and anything from doing a degree in
counselling to starting over from the very bottom of the career
ladder in any number of new directions is the best option for
you. Starting over is never easy but it may well be just what you
need.
Academia
Just because you’re looking to change your career doesn’t
mean that you should give up all of that valuable knowledge
and skill that you have developed over the course of what
could have been many years. Instead, why not turn those skills
to academia. Whether it’s working in a teaching role or a role
that is more heavily dedicated to research, there are a lot of
different ways to convert engineering skills and knowledge into
a valuable and successful career in academia.
No matter what you choose, there’s no doubt that a career
change can be a seriously scary prospect. In fact, a lot of
people put off something as significant as a career change
simply out of fear and the knowledge that there is comfort and
safety in keeping things the same. Of course, as comfortable as
keeping things the same can be, the reality is that you’re never
going to be able to truly make the most of your skills and your
career unless you’re willing to embrace risk and change.

New Study By Dr. Steven Quay
Concludes that SARS-CoV-2 Came
from a Laboratory
Wuhan Institute of Virology Research in
December 2019 Shows Evidence of
Adenovirus Vaccine Experiments in
Patients with COVID-19
A paper was published today by Dr. Steven
Quay, M.D., PhD., CEO of Atossa Therapeutics,
Inc. (NASDAQ: ATOS), entitled, “A Bayesian
analysis concludes beyond a reasonable doubt
that SARS-CoV-2 is not a natural zoonosis
but instead is laboratory derived.” The 193-
page paper can be downloaded from Zenodo,
a general-purpose open-access repository
operated by CERN, here: https://zenodo.org/
record/4477081#
A short ‘explainer’ video about the paper is
here: https://zenodo.org/record/4477212#.
The purpose of the analysis was to determine
the origin of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes
COVID-19. Beginning with a likelihood of 98.2%
that it was a zoonotic jump from nature with only
a 1.2% probability it was a laboratory escape,
twenty-six different, independent facts and
evidence were examined systematically. The
final conclusion is that it is a 99.8% probability
SARS-CoV-2 came from a laboratory and only a
0.2% likelihood it came from nature.
80
“Like many others, I am concerned about what
appear to be significant conflicts of interest
between members of the WHO team and
scientists and doctors in China and how much
this will impede an unbiased examination of the
origin of SARS-CoV-2,” said Dr. Quay.
“By taking only publicly available, scientific
evidence about SARS-CoV-2 and using
highly conservative estimates in my analysis,
I nonetheless conclude that it is beyond a
reasonable doubt that SARS-CoV-2 escaped
from a laboratory. The additional evidence of
what appears to be adenovirus vaccine genetic
sequences in specimens from five patients from
December 2019 and sequenced by the Wuhan
Institute of Virology requires an explanation. You
would see this kind of data in a vaccine challenge
trial, for example. Hopefully the WHO team can
get answers to these questions.”
To assist in finding the truth and to get feedback
on the methodologies used and conclusions
reached in this paper, a pre-publication copy
of this paper was sent to twenty-six scientists
worldwide, including the WHO investigators
currently in Wuhan, Wuhan Institute of Virology
scientists, as well as other prominent virologists.

Taiwan’s innovative technology allows
for germ eliminating fabric by making
use of semiconductor mechanics
With COVID-19 becoming more deadly
with mutations and secondary infections
becoming more frequent, people have
shifted our focus from using protective masks to
rushing and cutting lines to get the new vaccine.
A company has created a textile that is about to
be a game changer in our virus invested world. A
few days ago, ACTife released a new technology
for antibacterial fabric. These textile materials
utilize semiconductor sputtering technology,
which uses silver, copper and titanium sputtering
to produce a hydroxyl radical on the surface
of the fabric. Because hydroxyl radicals can
destroy viruses and bacteria in medicine and
make their proteins lose their function. Therefore,
the materials developed by ACTife can not only
block viruses and bacteria, but also use hydroxyl
radicals to prevent contact with the bacteria and
viruses while they are adsorbed on the surface
of the fabric. This technology has been verified
by the SGS, Boken, Intertek, and Japan SEK to
effectively sterilize 99.9% of bacteria and germs.
FYI https://health-ecoforum.medium.com/
The research team of Fu Jen Catholic University
Taiwan published an anti-virus research report
on ACTife’s nano sputtered fabric and Stated
“The fabric successfully blocked and absorbed
the germs and bacteria on the cloth, which
prevented secondary infection of the virus.”
M. L.Chang, Chairman of ACTife, said: “This
sputtering technology was originally used in
semiconductors. When the pandemic broke
out, our research team discovered that the
three-metal nano-atoms of silver, copper and
84
titanium used in medical materials had an
excellent sterilization effect, so we began
to develop products such as masks and
protective gears. We look forward to this
technology and what it can contribute to
global pandemic prevention.” This technology
generates free radicals which causes the
side chains of amino acids on the surface
make proteins lose their function, thereby
making germs harmless and greatly reducing
the risk of infection. Not only can it apply
to masks, but anything that uses fabric
like towels, socks, clothing or air filters.
CEO of ACTife Dr. Y. P. Lu also pointed out:
“The advantage of physical antibacterial
properties is that it makes the material more
durable and does not precipitate any toxic or
undesirable substances. As of now, the most
used antibacterial chemical is bleach and
the substance of bleach is actually a high
concentration of sodium hypochlorite, which
is well known for killing germs but it is harmful
to the human body and the environment in
terms of smell and touch.
The silver, copper, and titanium with splashes
of ACTife Plating technology is a physical
antibacterial technology that produces a
free radical shield on the surface of the
fabric. This highly active free radical shield
eliminates bacteria and viruses that pass
through it. It has the excellent function of
long-lasting and washable resistance. In
addition, the surface of the material does
not stick to bacteria and viruses, and can be
safely reused. Compared with ordinary masks
and protective clothing on the market, it is not
only more environmentally friendly, but also
does not cause pollution and other infection
risks. With its innovative antibacterial and
antiviral technology, Actife has now entered
the medical material market and is looking
to use their innovative technology to further
enhance our protection against coronavirus.

Building Green For a
Sustainable Future
Planning for a more sustainable future
means looking into green building
practices. These can involve any
number of resources and materials that
optimize energy-use, especially when they are
adjusted to suit the natural environment. If you
are interested in pursuing a greener degree of
sustainability in construction, consider some
of the following things you can do.
Focus on Smaller Spaces
No matter the green practices you establish
in a larger home, it will always be easier to
employ sustainable practices in a smaller one.
Though a smaller property will be much more
eco-friendly, you do not need to dive into the
“tiny home” market. Think about the purpose
of the home and establish all of the base
necessities before you think about expanding.
Having the basic blueprints for functionality
and comfort will allow you to plan ahead
better for your sustainability per every square
foot on the property itself. Start small and then
begin adjusting for lifestyle.
Use the Appropriate Insulation
Your insulation is critical to saving energy
during seasonal changes. When your home
loses heat in the winter and cool air in the
summer, your HVAC units need to work
harder to make up for the lost changes in
temperature. To avoid this, focus on using the
right insulation. Some of the most effective
green options include sheep’s wool and
cotton. Both aerogel and icynene are available
as well, with the latter providing homeowners
with some of the most efficient sealing
opportunities available. Adjust according to
your budget, and do not be afraid to spend
more now for greater savings later.
Cool Through the Roof
The primary material you use to cool your
rooftop can make a tremendous difference
in the home’s energy rating. Use products
that can reflect the sun’s energy to prevent
heat from sapping into your home. Both slate
and terracotta tiles can be perfect for homes
that spend a lot of time in the open sun.
92
Some special membranes may be available
as well. Like with any other such system,
adjust according to your budget and climate
expectations, as milder regions will not need as
much rooftop adjustment as hotter ones.
Work with Green Building Materials
Choosing eco-friendly building materials
is absolutely vital to the longevity of a
greenhouse. These materials are usually
made from recycled or reclaimed objects, and
they are tested for their durability to provide
homeowners with security and structural
integrity. Some of the greenest building
materials include reclaimed steel and bamboo.
Precast concrete can also be an excellent
option, especially in larger homes that need the
structural stability. Depending on the size and
specifics of the home itself, professionals may
work with any combination of green building
materials to get the desired results in the
property.
Establish Solar Panels
As solar technology becomes more and more
accessible, more homes are beginning to
feature solar panels on their rooftops. These
can be essential in reducing energy costs
throughout the house because they produce
energy from one of the most readily renewable
resources available: sunlight. These panels
are particularly recommended in warm areas
that enjoy a lot of open sunlight. Choosing the
appropriate generators and battery storage
systems will allow homeowners to synergize
results even more efficiently. With only a little bit
of maintenance every few months, homeowners
can look forward to tremendous savings and
energy efficiency ratings.
Use the Right Colors
Sometimes the colors you choose can make all
the difference. Depending on what the weather
is like around the property, you may choose
from a specific color palette in order to keep
the house warmer or cooler as necessary.
Lighter tones reflect sunlight, making them
desirable for the hotter months. Darker tones,
on the other hand, absorb sunlight, allowing
heat to stay circulated through the property for
longer. Homes built in milder climates will have
more freedom regarding their color options,
but thinking about weather trends can allow for
better savings. The cost benefits of painting
with the appropriate materials and colors are
tremendous in the long run.
Versatility will be your most powerful tool in
this field. Not all solutions will work well with all
environments, but knowing what to incorporate
in the appropriate areas will lead to results you
can be proud of.

Workplace Digitalisation is a Key
Driver of Success in Asia
Organisations in Asia must pay close
attention to the digital experience of
their employees in order to find more
success in terms of growth, the establishment
of a healthy and progressive work environment,
and the attraction and retention of top talent,
according to new research from VMware.
Covering 12 countries within the APAC region,
the annual report included 200 respondents
from the Asia and explored the impact of digital
workspace technologies on organisations.
The digitalisation of the workplace is a
particularly important factor for prospective
employees in the APAC region, with 92 percent
of respondents saying that the flexibility of
digital tools usage would positively influence
their decision to join an organisation.
Furthermore, 70.5 percent of respondents
in Asia agreed that their current employer
should focus their efforts on equipping the
96
workforce with the best digital tools, while only
28.5 percent believe that current efforts were
enough.
Part of the study also focused on the biggest
challenges that hindered the delivery of optimal
digital experience in the workplace. The top
three issues selected by respondents in the
APAC were funding (46.9 percent) time (45.8
percent), and a lack of understanding of what
employees want and need (28.8 percent).
Possibly the biggest disparity is between
how employees feel they contribute to their
organisation’s digitisation efforts and the
viewpoint of decision makers. More than half
(58.7 percent) of Asian employees surveyed
don’t believe they have a voice when it comes
to what digital technologies are used in the
office, while 86 percent of ITDMs believe they
give their employees a voice within this area.
“The research clearly shows that by offering
modern, flexible digital tools, employers
can help to deliver a positive experience for
existing employees and promote growth.
It can also help to attract the prospective
talent who increasingly view digitalisation
workplace solutions as a key part of their work
experience,” said Ahmed Auda, Managing
Director, VMware. “Companies would be welladvised
to better engage their employees
and gain new insights into how digitalisation
tools can benefit day-to-day activities and
improve the workplace environment. This may
open up new avenues for investment on other
digitalisation technologies that in turn could
transform the business,” he added.
The findings of the survey are especially
relevant given Asia’s ambitious economic
diversification plans and ambitions to capitalize
on the digital economy. VMware is committed
to helping organizations to digitally transform
and so contribute to these plans. Earlier this
year, the University of Sharjah highlighted
that VMware helped it create an immersive
technology experience. By deploying VMware
Horizon, the University has empowered
students and faculty to be successful by
giving access to anytime, anywhere learning.
This was an important part of the university’s
digital strategy to attract the best students and
lecturers amid strong global competition.
