Tommy Raudonikis – a legend remembered<br />

A minute of silence was observed in the<br />

Council meeting last week to remember footy<br />

legend Tommy Raudonikis. Tommy was part<br />

of our community’s fabric. His debut season<br />

with the Western Suburbs Magpies was at<br />

none other than our very own Lidcombe<br />

Oval in 1969.<br />

In a <strong>May</strong>oral Minute, I recommended naming<br />

the Lidcombe Oval grandstand, the ‘Tommy<br />

Raudonikis Grandstand’ in memory of his<br />

debut season and sporting contributions.<br />

It will be open for public comments from<br />

next month.<br />

The expression of interest for use of Lidcombe<br />

Oval closed and is coming to council for<br />

consideration in the next four weeks. It’s for<br />

the use of the velodrome and football field.<br />

It asked applicants what capital contribution<br />

they could make to the ground.<br />

I’m a supporter of allocating funds to make<br />

improvements to the grandstand. Raudonikis<br />

had a long career, spearheading the Western<br />

Suburbs Magpies team for over 200 games, as<br />

well as Newtown Jets for three seasons. I send<br />

condolences to his family and loves ones.<br />

New Acting General Manager<br />

We’ve appointed a new Acting General<br />

Manager, Peter J Fitzgerald, to take the helm<br />

at Cumberland City Council.<br />

It marks the departure of Hamish McNulty who<br />

served as General Manager for nearly two years<br />

and is stepping aside for medical reasons.<br />

I had a strong relationship with Hamish and<br />

personally thanked him for his service and<br />

wished him well with his health journey.<br />

Hamish demonstrated great innovation<br />

and leadership and supported Cumberland<br />

City Council throughout the pandemic and<br />

managed the many challenges that it brought.<br />

I definitely have learned a lot from Hamish and<br />

have thoroughly enjoyed working with him.<br />

I welcome Peter as the new Acting General<br />

Manager. I’ve worked with Peter for close to<br />

four years and know him to be a solid leader<br />

with a head for strategic decision making.<br />

I believe we’re the youngest <strong>May</strong>or / General<br />

Manager team in NSW, bringing a fresh<br />

perspective to our community.<br />

Noise wall makes life quieter<br />

for North <strong>Parra</strong>matta locals<br />

Traffic noise complaints have not<br />

fallen on deaf ears, with a new<br />

wall now completed along James<br />

Ruse Drive between Belmore Road East<br />

and Bellevue Street.<br />

North <strong>Parra</strong>matta residents can now<br />

enjoy a quieter life after the noise wall<br />

was delivered as part of the State Government’s<br />

Noise Abatement Program.<br />

State <strong>Parra</strong>matta MP Geoff Lee said<br />

the purpose of the program is to provide<br />

treatments for high traffic noise areas<br />

that are causing concern.<br />

“The new 195 metre long noise wall,<br />

built on the southern side of James Ruse<br />

Drive, is a win for local residents as it will<br />

reduce the level of high traffic noise in the<br />

area,” he said.<br />

“The delivery of the noise wall marks<br />

the completion of the entire noise wall<br />

upgrade along James Ruse Drive, with<br />

the finish, texture and colour fitting<br />

in seamlessly with the local landscape<br />

of the North <strong>Parra</strong>matta region, while<br />

discouraging graffiti and vandalism.”<br />

Transport for NSW began work on the<br />

noise wall in October last year.<br />

Dr Lee said he is pleased to see the<br />

project delivered on time for local residents.<br />

Transport for NSW thanked the<br />

community for their patience as this<br />

important work was carried out in the<br />

local area.<br />

Council to “workshop” plan<br />

for public to select <strong>May</strong>or<br />

Despite Lord <strong>May</strong>or Bob Dwyer<br />

receiving almost no support for<br />

his Notice of Motion, the City of<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Council will move to workshop<br />

his proposal for a Constitutional<br />

Referendum on whether the city should<br />

popularly elect its Lord <strong>May</strong>or.<br />

Councillor Pierre Esber put forward an<br />

amendment to the motion at the most<br />

recent Council meeting, calling for a<br />

workshop to explore different models of<br />

elected Lord <strong>May</strong>ors.<br />

Traditionally, City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

Councillors have selected their own<br />

Lord <strong>May</strong>or, which has seen a significant<br />

number of differing representatives in<br />

the position.<br />

There are only four Lord <strong>May</strong>ors in the<br />

State of NSW and the City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

is the only one of the four that does not<br />

popularly elect its Lord <strong>May</strong>or.<br />

Despite significant push back in the<br />

chamber for the original motion, Cr<br />

Esber called for support on his amendment,<br />

stating they must at least investigate<br />

options to find the best solution.<br />

“I’m asking for a conversation; we<br />

should think about this, as Councillors<br />

we have to think about what is best for<br />

the city,” he said.<br />

“We’ve got to have a model that will<br />

work for everyone.”<br />

Former Lord <strong>May</strong>or Andrew Wilson<br />

was forthcoming with his objections to<br />

the proposal, stating he believes this will<br />

make it more difficult for Independents<br />

to be sworn into the job.<br />

“There is no perfect democracy,” he<br />

said.<br />

“I understand what you are trying to<br />

do but I really feel that it is against our<br />

tradition.<br />

“It’s not meant to solve any problem, it<br />

is simply a philosophical position which<br />

would be more at home in America and I<br />

point out those American cities that fail<br />

all have this system.”<br />

The amended motion by Cr Esber was<br />

carried eight votes to six.<br />

Conference system a shocker<br />

The idea of a conference system in the<br />

National Rugby League (NRL) is high on<br />

sugar, but low on substance.<br />

Every argument for such a system is so<br />

easily shot down. It’s just not worth it.<br />

Even talk of the conference system creating<br />

“more Sydney blockbusters” is farcical.<br />

You’re simply manufacturing blockbusters<br />

with no real meaning, and people<br />

won’t buy it.<br />

Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo are<br />

doing an incredible job leading the NRL,<br />

but they’re on the wrong track with this<br />

one. Let’s hope common sense prevails<br />

and this never happens.<br />

Near-normality in Australia.<br />

Meanwhile, daily horror unfolds<br />

in India as jampacked hospitals turn<br />

away the dying. Frantic relatives hit<br />

the streets in a hunt for oxygen supplies.<br />

Mass cremations spire out into<br />

the open. Witnesses report the air is<br />

thick with the stench of human remains.<br />

New COVID cases in India now exceed<br />

a staggering 370,000 per day and more<br />

than 200,000 people have died. Major<br />

population centres have gone into lockdown<br />

– first Delhi, now Bengaluru and<br />

Maharashtra State.<br />

Deaths are forecast to hit a peak of<br />

13,000 daily by mid-<strong>May</strong>.<br />

India, of course, was always a prime<br />

candidate for COVID to run amok. In<br />

Australia, all hell breaks loose over a single<br />

case. But how do Indians socially distance<br />

in one of the world’s most densely<br />

populated living quarters? In a nation of<br />

1.37 billion people, how do you even begin<br />

to contact trace?<br />

Among our own Indian Australian community,<br />

including right here in <strong>Parra</strong>matta,<br />

many are stricken with fear for elderly<br />

parents left to cope alone across the seas.<br />

so degenerated. Prime Minister Narendra<br />

Modi effectively declared victory over<br />

COVID in January. But the nation fell victim<br />

to complacency. Election rallies, protests<br />

and religious festivals like Kumbh<br />

Mela became super spreader events.<br />

Many Australian groups are stepping<br />

up, raising money for a neighbour in<br />

need. The Federal Government is contributing<br />

500 ventilators and millions of<br />

pieces of surgical gear.<br />

Yet while our humanitarian impulse<br />

towards those in need is admirable, it<br />

seems our willingness to meet our responsibilities<br />

has its limits. Australia has<br />

now halted flights with India until <strong>May</strong><br />

15. This is prudent but also a quick fix to a<br />

multidimensional problem.<br />

The reality is this: an estimated 8,000<br />

Australians remain stranded in India.<br />

These are our fellow compatriots in grave<br />

danger of contracting COVID and desperate<br />

to come home. At the same time,<br />

some Australians also need to travel to<br />

India. They’re not all wedding frolickers.<br />

Most want to tend to sick parents, knock<br />

heads among the local authorities to get<br />

their loved ones medical treatment, or<br />

handle affairs after someone has died.<br />

While special arrangements are made<br />

for celebrities and cricketers, Australia<br />

is one of the few countries not only prohibiting<br />

returns from India but stopping<br />

people who want to leave.<br />

How to solve this problem? A year into<br />

the pandemic, there is frankly no excuse<br />

for Australia not to have built the fortified<br />

remote quarantine facilities capable<br />

of repatriating its own travellers and<br />

citizens. Hotel quarantine in the big cities<br />

has played an important role. But in<br />

an era of mutating global strains, it’s no<br />

longer fit-for-purpose.<br />

The Commonwealth should be moving<br />

faster on remote quarantine. But the<br />

thing is, most Australians aren’t demanding<br />

it. Our nation escaped the pandemic<br />

relatively unscathed. We locked down<br />

during the first wave. And we shut off our<br />

borders to the rest of the world. In the<br />

process, did we also shut off something<br />

within ourselves?<br />

It’s comparatively easy to open our wallets<br />

to India, and then close our minds.<br />

A strong COVID border has the support<br />

of all Australians. But it also needs to be<br />

practiced with compassion.<br />

And a recognition we have an obligation<br />

to support our own citizens in the most<br />

exceptional of circumstances – many of<br />

whom remain trapped in the worst hell<br />

of all.<br />

Driving the recovery<br />

Treasurer says western Sydney is at the heart of this month’s State Budget<br />

has declared western Sydney<br />

is the “engine room” driving<br />

the state’s economic recovery from the<br />

COVID-19 pandemic.<br />

Mr Perrottet spoke to <strong>Parra</strong> <strong>News</strong> ahead<br />

of the upcoming State Budget, which is to<br />

be delivered on <strong>May</strong> 11.<br />

“Western Sydney is doing well, it’s been<br />

a difficult 12 months and it isn’t just about<br />

recovering, but transforming the way<br />

we do things, and we are getting positive<br />

feedback from businesses in terms of how<br />

they are going,” Mr Perrottet said.<br />

“We want western Sydney to be the best<br />

place to live, work, run a business, raise a<br />

family in the country, and that means we<br />

need to invest.”<br />

As a part of the Budget, residents can<br />

expect to see a continued investment into<br />

western Sydney, as it continues to grow.<br />

“What you will see is investment in infrastructure,<br />

schools, and all the works we<br />

have set out to do will continue,” he said.<br />

“Road infrastructure in western Sydney<br />

is also crucial as we want to make sure<br />

everyone can access that and public transport<br />

to get home to their families faster”.<br />

Not confirming whether funding would<br />

be allocated in the Budget for Stage 2 of the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail project, Mr Perrottet<br />

said the issue is in the court of Transport<br />

Minister, Andrew Constance.<br />

“When it comes to the infrastructure<br />

statement, I will consider all the bids that<br />

have been put forward, but I am awaiting<br />

Andrew’s submission to come through,”<br />

he said.<br />

“Questions in terms of that project are<br />

better directed to him but we will continue<br />

to invest record amounts in <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

with things such as schools and the<br />

Powerhouse Museum.”<br />

Mr Perrottet said the government was<br />

strongly committed to delivering the<br />

Powerhouse <strong>Parra</strong>matta, despite the<br />

community’s effort to save historic home<br />

Willow Grove, which is set to be dismantled<br />

and relocated to another site in the<br />

area. He said in reality, it was a cost of<br />

progress.<br />

“As we grow our three cities vision with<br />

Sydney, <strong>Parra</strong>matta and the Aerotropolis,<br />

all three and surrounding areas need to<br />

not only have the best access to public<br />

transport, road infrastructure, health and<br />

education but the best cultural investments<br />

as well,” he said.<br />

“Willow Grove is a challenging issue but<br />

if you are building things and getting on<br />

with the job and taking the state forward<br />

you naturally will have some issues along<br />

the way, but that is a better issue to have<br />

than the issue of no problems for doing<br />

nothing.”<br />

New tennis court lights coming<br />

The tennis courts at Timbergetters Reserve<br />

in Winston Hills are set for a lighting upgrade<br />

thanks to $16,200 in funding from the NSW ATP<br />

Cup Tennis Legacy Fund, an initiative of Tennis<br />

NSW and the NSW Government. We know<br />

how much our community loves playing tennis<br />

and I have no doubt these new light poles and<br />

LED lights will be a real hit with players of all<br />

ages. Tennis is a sport everyone can enjoy and I<br />

encourage you to book a court, grab a racquet<br />

Heart of Play<br />

For many in the City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta, public parks<br />

and reserves are an extension of their own<br />

backyards. This desire for green open spaces<br />

underpins our new “Heart of Play” masterplan<br />

– a blueprint for an outdoor sporting and<br />

recreation network in North <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

The masterplan will inform upgrades and<br />

improvements to a number of sports fields and<br />

green spaces including Doyle Ground, Dan<br />

Mahoney Reserve, Barton Park, Old Saleyards<br />

Reserve, PH Jeffrey Reserve, Sherwin Park<br />

and Corry Court. I encourage the community<br />

to have their say by 4pm on Monday 24 <strong>May</strong>.<br />

Roadmap to recovery<br />

Not only is Sydney’s Central River City<br />

undergoing a major transformation but it is<br />

also rebuilding amid the ongoing impacts of<br />

the COVID-19 pandemic. To help us meet the<br />

needs of our community, we have prepared<br />

a draft roadmap known as Year Four of the<br />

Delivery Program 2018-2022. It’s made up of the<br />

Delivery Program 2018–2022 and Operational<br />

Plan <strong>2021</strong>/22 and sets out how Council plans to<br />

implement its core services, activities, programs<br />

and projects in the next financial year. I invite<br />

the community to have their say on this draft<br />

roadmap to recovery by 5pm on Tuesday 25<br />

Supporting rising sports stars<br />

We have so many talented sportspeople in<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta who represent our City at an elite<br />

level. I was proud to meet with young athletes<br />

who are members of the Western Sydney<br />

Academy of Sport [WSAS] alongside Deputy<br />

Lord <strong>May</strong>or Cr Michelle Garrard on Thursday 29<br />

April. I spoke with these rising stars of cycling,<br />

golf, softball and Lone Star (judo and karatekata)<br />

about their intense training schedules,<br />

achievements and goals. Council is proud to<br />

support WSAS to provide Western Sydney’s next<br />

generation of sports stars with the best training<br />

and development programs in the country.<br />

Putting <strong>Parra</strong>matta first<br />

Alliance sees government and universities working together to boost city<br />

An Australian-first alliance<br />

between government and<br />

top universities is set to put<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta on the map as a global destination<br />

for education.<br />

The City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta Council has<br />

launched the EducateAT <strong>Parra</strong>matta Alliance,<br />

uniting universities which have a<br />

presence in <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

These include Western Sydney University,<br />

University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney,<br />

University of New England, Swinburne<br />

University of Technology, and the Western<br />

Sydney Local Health District.<br />

The purpose of the alliance is to position<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta as a destination for educational<br />

excellence through advocacy and<br />

collaboration projects.<br />

City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta Lord <strong>May</strong>or Bob<br />

Dwyer said activating <strong>Parra</strong>matta as a<br />

global destination is not only beneficial for<br />

students but also for the local economy.<br />

“This powerful alliance has one key<br />

goal; to help <strong>Parra</strong>matta become the best<br />

city in Australia for students to study and<br />

succeed,” he said.<br />

“EducateAT <strong>Parra</strong>matta is our shared<br />

vision for Sydney’s Central River City as a<br />

thriving hub of academic excellence, jobs<br />

growth and opportunity for the people of<br />

western Sydney and the world.”<br />

At a ceremony at the Western Sydney<br />

University City Campus recently, Cr<br />

Dwyer signed the EducateAT <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

Charter along with representatives from<br />

each alliance member.<br />

The EducateAT <strong>Parra</strong>matta Alliance is a<br />

priority of Council’s ‘Where it’s AT’ brand<br />

strategy, launched in 2020.<br />

Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor<br />

and President Professor Barney<br />

Glover said the university is pleased to be<br />

part of the transformative alliance.<br />

“<strong>Parra</strong>matta sets the bar for other cities<br />

and it’s great to see education at the heart<br />

of that,” he said.<br />

“This is how to create a truly ‘smart city’<br />

where education, employment and liveability<br />

are at the core of the city’s development,<br />

growth and identity.<br />

“With shared vision and common objectives,<br />

we can lift <strong>Parra</strong>matta’s already<br />

strong educational foundations to a new,<br />

internationally-recognised level.”<br />

The City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta is home to five<br />

universities with an education and training<br />

sector worth up to $1.6 billion, employing<br />

more than 11,500 people.<br />

More than 25,000 university students are<br />

enrolled across the city’s campuses. The<br />

State Government is now planning for an<br />

alternative quarantine program to allow<br />

for international students to return.<br />

Telopea: Another devastating blow<br />

for Abdallah family<br />

The family of the Oatlands crash<br />

victims have suffered another devastating<br />

blow, after their Telopea home was<br />

robbed last Wednesday.<br />

The Abdallah family lost three children<br />

in February last year after a drunk driver<br />

crashed into the children when they<br />

were walking to get an ice-cream.<br />

Police received reports of the invasion<br />

around 11.45am last Wednesday and<br />

attended the Robert Street home.<br />

Leila Abdallah, mother of victims<br />

Antony, Angelina and Sienna was at<br />

home at the time of the robbery with a<br />

40-year-old female friend.<br />

The women saw the masked intruder<br />

before he fled the scene in a stolen<br />

white Audi, which was being driven by a<br />

second man.<br />

Handbags and jewellery were reported<br />

as stolen.<br />

A short time later, about 11.50am,<br />

emergency services were called to a<br />

home on Kissing Point Road at Dundas,<br />

after reports of an attempted stealing.<br />

Police have been told a 35-year-old man<br />

had parked his vehicle in the driveway<br />

of a home where he was conducting<br />

work, and when he returned he saw an<br />

unknown man exiting the driver’s seat of<br />

the car.<br />

When confronted, the man then ran to<br />

the passenger side of a white Audi, which<br />

was parked a short distance away, and<br />

the vehicle drove away.<br />

Local police were unable to locate the<br />

vehicle despite extensive patrols.<br />

Detectives are treating both incidents<br />

as linked.<br />

The Audi is believed to have been stolen<br />

from a home at North Rocks between<br />

10pm on Monday, April 26 and 6am on<br />

Tuesday, April 27, and remains outstanding.<br />

The man is described as being of<br />

Caucasian appearance, about 183cm tall,<br />

aged between 20-25 with a skinny build<br />

and blond/light coloured hair.<br />

Merrylands: Teen girl charged<br />

over stabbing at train station<br />

A teenage girl appeared in court last<br />

week, charged following an alleged stabbing<br />

in Merrylands.<br />

About 4pm on Tuesday, April 27, emergency<br />

services responded to reports of a<br />

brawl at Merrylands Railway Station.<br />

Upon arrival, officers attached to<br />

Cumberland Police Area Command<br />

found a teenage girl with a stab wound to<br />

the arm.<br />

The 15-year-old girl was treated by<br />

paramedics at the scene before being<br />

taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead<br />

in a stable condition.<br />

Three teenage girls, one 14-year-old<br />

and two 16-year-olds were arrested at the<br />

scene and taken to Fairfield and Auburn<br />

Police Stations, where they were later<br />

released.<br />

Following inquiries, a further 16-yearold<br />

girl was arrested at a home in Hoxton<br />

Park about 11.30pm.<br />

She was taken to Liverpool Police<br />

Station and charged with ‘wound person<br />

with intent to cause grievous bodily<br />

harm’ and ‘larceny’.<br />

The teenager was refused bail and<br />

appeared before a Children’s Court on<br />

Wednesday, April 28.<br />

As COVID-19 restrictions ease and the<br />

country gets back to normal, Uber Pool<br />

project unfolds.<br />

A new partnership between WSU,<br />

Powerhouse and Infrastructure NSW<br />

will see students engage in co-designed<br />

curriculum activities, directly linked to<br />

the cultural institution’s delivery.<br />

Students across Architecture, Building<br />

Design, Construction Management, Engineering<br />

and Industrial Design will have<br />

unparalleled access to learning opportunities,<br />

gaining unique and valuable hands<br />

Fight to ‘Save Willow Grove’ continues<br />

Thousands flocked to the streets on<br />

The announcements included<br />

School regarding an upgrade<br />

which saw the delivery of 20 new<br />

classrooms, a new hall and a new<br />

administrative space.<br />

The other took place at Carlingford<br />

High School, to announce<br />

which schools will benefit from<br />

the first round of the $157.8<br />

million school LED<br />

Lighting Project,<br />

part of the COVID-<br />

19 Recovery Plan.<br />

Labor slammed<br />

the announcements,<br />

calling<br />

out the<br />

for “delays<br />

Education Precinct have all been<br />

promised by the Liberal Party<br />

and none have been built.”<br />

Ms Car criticised the unveiling<br />

of the <strong>Parra</strong>matta West Public<br />

School upgrades for being more<br />

than 12 months late.<br />

across the state, while also<br />

supporting jobs.<br />

Thousands of public schools are<br />

to be revamped and upgraded as<br />

part of the $450 million package.<br />

Ms Sarah Mitchell said over the<br />

next two years LED lighting will<br />

be installed in up to 1,000 NSW<br />

public schools reducing energy<br />

costs for schools and improving<br />

the indoor learning environment<br />

for students, with almost 300<br />

schools confirmed for delivery.<br />

“We will support jobs across the<br />

state as we look to recover from<br />

COVID-19, and at the same time<br />

secure the future prosperity of<br />

NSW by enhancing schools for<br />

our students and teachers,” she<br />

Locals fighting to make<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta a better place to live<br />

One of the best parts of my job is seeing the fantastic work<br />

that people are doing to make out community stronger,<br />

and to make <strong>Parra</strong>matta a better place to live.<br />

Save Willow Grove<br />

I’m sure most of you are aware of the long running fight to Save<br />

Willow Grove.<br />

The NSW Government plans to demolish the 1880s Italianate villa,<br />

the only one of its kind in <strong>Parra</strong>matta, to make way for the new<br />

Powerhouse Museum.<br />

The grassroots campaign to save this valuable heritage site<br />

and build a world class museum elsewhere in <strong>Parra</strong>matta has<br />

won overwhelming community support, with more than 1,200<br />

people and organisations making submissions objecting to the<br />

Government’s plan to demolish the building.<br />

It’s also won support from the CFMEU, which has placed a Green<br />

Ban on Willow Grove and moved its annual <strong>May</strong> Day march<br />

to <strong>Parra</strong>matta this year. Past Green Bans saved The Rocks,<br />

Centennial Park and a local bushland site which is now the Central<br />

Gardens Nature Reserve Merrylands.<br />

In response, the NSW Government has agreed to ‘move’ Willow<br />

Despite being one of the biggest hospital precincts<br />

in Australia, Westmead Hospital has not had a<br />

dedicated palliative care ward for many years.<br />

This means that locals are not receiving specialised care at the<br />

end of their lives, and are forced to choose between palliative<br />

care at home, which is not an option for people with complex<br />

medical conditions; in a ward that is focused on providing care<br />

to recovering patients; or in a different hospital with doctors<br />

unfamiliar with their medical history.<br />

Save our Local Buses<br />

The NSW Government recently scrapped a range of local bus<br />

services without consulting the community, including the M52<br />

express service to the City. Other local services including the 525<br />

to Strathfield have been cut in half.<br />

On top of this, the NSW Government is pushing ahead with plans<br />

to privatise all of Sydney’s remaining public bus services – despite<br />

reports from the NSW Auditor General and Transport NSW<br />

showing that privatisation of bus services in Sydney’s inner west<br />

and Newcastle has led to slower, less reliable services and fewer<br />

bus stops.<br />

Local activists have started a petition to Save our Public Buses<br />

and they need more signatures to trigger a debate about these<br />

changes in the NSW Parliament. If you’re concerned about how<br />

How Sandie reclaimed<br />

Story of survival: One woman’s journey from the depths of despair at the<br />

Beaten, raped, disowned and institutionalised;<br />

this is the story of<br />

Sandie Jessamine.<br />

A remarkable tale of survival and<br />

endurance, as she revisits her time at the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Girls Home and her troubled<br />

life as a misunderstood teen.<br />

Ms Jessamine says she never truly felt<br />

like she belonged.<br />

Adopted at birth into a prestigious family<br />

she was quick to be labelled “uncontrollable”<br />

and “wild” by her adopted parents<br />

– a behaviour that only escalated after an<br />

attempted rape by a friend’s brother at just<br />

12-years-old.<br />

Her cries for help were met with denial,<br />

shame and packed bags, as she was sent<br />

off to institutions for ‘delinquent girls’ in<br />

order to control her behaviour.<br />

She was eventually sent by a children’s<br />

court to Reiby Training in Campbelltown.<br />

“I was 14-years-old when I was first<br />

locked up and remember just feeling<br />

completely out of my depth, being among<br />

these young criminals and prostitutes,”<br />

“The first thing that happened when<br />

you arrived back then was being shunted<br />

off into a clinic, being told to spread your<br />

legs and undergo an internal examination<br />

which was really horrific.”<br />

When her behaviour did not improve,<br />

she was transferred in 1974 to Kamballa<br />

Special Unit at <strong>Parra</strong>matta at 15-years-old.<br />

Kamballa was the new name for the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Girls Home, a state-controlled<br />

child-welfare institution.<br />

Ms Jessamine tries to describe the<br />

harrowing ordeals she endured inside its<br />

walls but some of her memory is foggy;<br />

something she has later learned in life is<br />

due to her complex post-traumatic stress<br />

and borderline personality disorder that<br />

saw her frequently dissociate as a young<br />

girl.<br />

“When I got to Kamballa there were only<br />

two girls there, one who was a murderer<br />

and another was this wild little street kid<br />

who had been locked up since she was<br />

12-years-old,” she said.<br />

Ms Jessamine shared a room with the<br />

infamous convicted child killer – a young<br />

girl who quickly became a friend and an<br />

accomplice in their escape just six weeks<br />

after arriving.<br />

The pair and four other inmates scaled<br />

a three metre high brick wall and swam<br />

across the <strong>Parra</strong>matta River to escape.<br />

The escape made front page news as the<br />

girls hid in Kings Cross before splitting up<br />

and being recaptured by the police.<br />

Bashed violently in police custody, Ms<br />

Jessamine’s mental health continued to<br />

steeply decline, particularly upon her<br />

return to Kamballa where girls blamed her<br />

for the capture of another escapee.<br />

“Kamballa turned into a nightmare<br />

for me at this stage. I kept blacking out,<br />

I would be in one spot and wake up in<br />

another and that’s when I escaped again,”<br />

she said.<br />

Scaling the wall for a second time, Ms<br />

Jessamine successfully escaped and lived<br />

on the streets of Redfern.<br />

However it was here she was exposed to<br />

a new world; one of muggings, stealing,<br />

violence, drinking and drugs.<br />

Things came to a head when she was<br />

violently raped, picked up by police and<br />

returned to Kamballa.<br />

It was then she made a pact with herself<br />

to survive, turn her life around and never<br />

get locked up again.<br />

Remarkably she went on to complete a<br />

Master of Education and worked in NSW<br />

prisons as a creative writing teacher for 15<br />

years.<br />

“For two years I worked at <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

men’s prison and would have to walk<br />

past the girls home every day but I would<br />

dissociate so much that it just wasn’t there<br />

to me,” Ms Jessamine said.<br />

In 2015 things went downhill, following<br />

a breakdown and the passing of her<br />

daughter.<br />

As part of her recovery, she decided that<br />

to be able to move forward, she must go<br />

back to the place that robbed her of so<br />

much joy.<br />

Revisiting the space that once imprisoned<br />

her was a confronting feeling, she<br />

said, one that felt like a distant memory<br />

she had kept locked in the back of her<br />

mind for decades.<br />

She began writing as a form of therapy<br />

and has recently published a memoir<br />

titled Borderline.<br />

The book tells her unique and compelling<br />

story, beautifully capturing all of the<br />

different voices that live within her, as she<br />

depicts what life was like for young girls<br />

who slipped through the cracks in the<br />

1970’s.<br />

“I now own who I am, my disorders and<br />

all,” Ms Jessamine said.<br />

“I used to see it as something negative<br />

but now I realise my ability to switch states<br />

it what kept me alive.<br />

“Going insane may have been the sanest<br />

thing I ever did.”<br />

Victor’s tribute restored<br />

Victor Brazier Park in Cumberland<br />

City has been restored, honouring<br />

its late owner who once operated a dairy<br />

farm on the site.<br />

Victor Brazier, born in 1900, was<br />

originally from Queensland and moved<br />

to Annandale where he lived with wife<br />

Margaret and children William, James,<br />

Norman and Lavinia.<br />

Mr Brazier served in the Royal Australian<br />

Navy for 25 years, including in WWII.<br />

Remarkably he was one of only 13<br />

survivors from HMAS Yarra, being picked<br />

up at sea after their ship was sunk by the<br />

Japanese.<br />

When he retired from the navy in 1945,<br />

he used this money to purchase the 7.5<br />

acre dairy farm in Guildford.<br />

He eventually donated the land, now<br />

known as Victor Brazier Park, to the City of<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Council.<br />

His son, Norman Brazier worked hard<br />

with the City of <strong>Parra</strong>matta Council to<br />

form a park committee where the neighbours<br />

came together, cleaned up the park<br />

and planted trees that still stand today.<br />

The park was officially named on August<br />

8, 1998 where a sign was constructed,<br />

detailing a brief history.<br />

Cormie-McDonald says it was her father’s<br />

greatest pride to have his father honoured<br />

with this sign.<br />

However, the pair were saddened in the<br />

last couple of years, following the Council<br />

merger when they noticed the original<br />

sign was no longer there.<br />

“This saddened my father Norman and I<br />

promised him that we would get in contact<br />

with the Cumberland City Council,” she<br />

said.<br />

“Unfortunately on September 29, 2020<br />

my father passed away before I could put<br />

the letter to paper.”<br />

Ms Cormie-McDonald said she then<br />

made it her mission to follow through with<br />

her father’s quest.<br />

“I got an immediate response from the<br />

Cumberland City Council, stating that the<br />

sign would be replaced and was done so in<br />

a matter of weeks,” she said.<br />

Community champions<br />

Support for migrant communities grows thanks to important local service<br />

The local African migrant community<br />

was celebrated at The Great<br />

Lakes Agency for Peace and Development<br />

(GLAPD) relaunch in Merrylands<br />

recently.<br />

The event marked a significant milestone<br />

for the organisation, which started<br />

with humble beginnings in 2012.<br />

The relaunch signified the organisation’s<br />

evolution and growth to becoming a vital<br />

community migrant support network.<br />

GLAPD plays an important role in the<br />

settlement of migrants in Australia by<br />

supporting them to integrate socially,<br />

culturally and economically.<br />

This is achieved through a number of<br />

services and initiatives including cultural<br />

and sports programs as well as guidance<br />

and literacy classes.<br />

At the relaunch, GLAPD wanted to<br />

showcase the talented works of creatives<br />

from around the region, whose works<br />

document and celebrate the experiences<br />

of settlement in Australia for African<br />

communities.<br />

GLAPD Executive Manager Emmanuel<br />

Musoni said they are proud to celebrate<br />

the local migrant community.<br />

“We started this organisation in 2012 but<br />

we have grown and in growing we don’t<br />

fit in the mould of that same organisation<br />

anymore,” he said.<br />

“If you come to our office on any day, you<br />

will see migrants from all over the world<br />

coming for our services.<br />

“There was a need to expand, and a need<br />

to grow, dealing with bigger issues of the<br />

community.<br />

“We are glad to be able to tell the story<br />

of who we are, our journey, and our farreaching<br />

programs.”<br />

The event saw performances from<br />

spoken word poet Roje Ndayambaje,<br />

whose poetry is created to share the story<br />

of his people and his deep love for Africa.<br />

Self-taught musician, songwriter and<br />

worship leader David Nduwimana also<br />

performed.<br />

Other artists including photographers,<br />

film makers, painters and photo-media<br />

artists all of whom celebrate the African<br />

culture were also showcased at the event.<br />

In 2016, 49.5 per cent of people in the City<br />

of <strong>Parra</strong>matta and 52.2 per cent of people<br />

in Cumberland City were born overseas.<br />

Light Rail’s green tick<br />

Sustainability at the forefront of construction as project moves forward<br />

Sustainability is on track for the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail project as<br />

construction works begin to reuse<br />

materials from the former T6 Carlingford<br />

Rail Line.<br />

Materials including ballast, sleepers and<br />

tracks will be recycled to help form the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail.<br />

These have now been prepared and are<br />

ready to be reused.<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta MP Geoff Lee said the reuse<br />

of materials demonstrates the project’s<br />

commitment to achieving environmental<br />

and sustainable outcomes for the community<br />

while delivering light rail.<br />

“Sustainability is top of mind for the<br />

project and these recovered components<br />

from the original single-track T6 Carlingford<br />

Rail Line are in excellent condition for<br />

reuse,” he said.<br />

“More than half of the ballast, 60 per cent<br />

of the rail tracks and 50 per cent of the<br />

sleepers removed last year will be reused<br />

along the five-kilometre Carlingford to<br />

Camellia corridor to construct the new<br />

light rail.”<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail construction is continuing with the environment in mind.<br />

In preparation for its reuse, more than<br />

8,000 cubic metres of ballast was washed<br />

and rescreened to meet specifications for<br />

the <strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail.<br />

Once the laying of the ballast is complete,<br />

the team will install the sleepers followed<br />

by the rail tracks.<br />

Dr Lee said recycling these materials will<br />

benefit the project, the community and<br />

the environment in which the light rail<br />

will operate.<br />

“This process will mean using less<br />

resources, achieving better time efficiencies,<br />

better environmental results<br />

and a more sustainable outcome for the<br />

community,” he said.<br />

“By reusing these materials, we will<br />

reduce the <strong>Parra</strong>matta Light Rail’s carbon<br />

dioxide output by more than 3,500 tonnes.”<br />

The single-track T6 Carlingford Rail Line<br />

permanently closed for the construction<br />

and conversion of the dual-track light rail<br />

in January 2020.<br />

The 12-kilometre, $2.4 billion <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

Light Rail will connect Westmead to<br />

Carlingford via the <strong>Parra</strong>matta CBD and<br />

Camellia and is expected to commence<br />

services in 2023.<br />

Business leaders and community<br />

representatives from both sides of politics<br />

continue their calls for a commitment to<br />

stage two of the project, after the Transport<br />

Minister all but confirmed it would<br />

not be going ahead last year.<br />

Stage two of the project, if it does go<br />

ahead, would see the connection of the<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta CBD with Ermington, Melrose<br />

Park, Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic<br />

Eric’s special milestone<br />

100 reasons to smile: Huge birthday celebrations planned for rugby icon<br />

Australia’s oldest living Waratah<br />

and Wallaby, Eric Tweedale will<br />

turn 100 tomorrow, with Merrylands<br />

RSL set to celebrate with the local<br />

sports legend.<br />

Born in Lancashire, England, in 1921,<br />

Mr Tweedale migrated with his parents to<br />

Australia in 1924, settling at Merrylands.<br />

Attending Guildford Public School and<br />

later <strong>Parra</strong>matta Junior High School, Mr<br />

Tweedale was a natural athlete, excelling<br />

in athletics, then cricket and Rugby Union.<br />

His introduction to rugby came through<br />

a chance meeting with “Wild Bill “ Cerutti,<br />

one of Australia’s best known players, who<br />

took him to training at <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

He first played for <strong>Parra</strong>matta at<br />

Cumberland Oval in 1937, shortly after his<br />

17th Birthday.<br />

Though completely new to the game, he<br />

made the first fifteen (XV) in 1938 and was<br />

soon a regular first-grader.<br />

During World War II, he spent four years<br />

in the Royal Australian Navy, serving on<br />

Australia’s east coast and New Guinea.<br />

He returned to play club rugby at<br />

Rugby union icon Eric Tweedale is celebrating his 100th birthday this week.<br />

25-years-old and in 1945 was a member of<br />

<strong>Parra</strong>matta’s first ever grand final team.<br />

In 1946 he was selected in the Waratahs<br />

front row with <strong>Parra</strong>matta teammates,<br />

Ken Kearney and Len Wolfe, the first time<br />

a club front row had represented NSW.<br />

Later that year he made the Wallaby<br />

tour to New Zealand, playing in both test<br />

matches and later made the 1947/48 tour of<br />

the British Isles and France.<br />

Mr Tweedale represented the Waratahs<br />

and Wallabies against the Maori All Blacks<br />

in Australia in 1949 before retiring from<br />

international Rugby to concentrate on<br />

a career with the Shell Oil Company in<br />

Forbes.<br />

From there he was instrumental in<br />

setting up a rugby club in Forbes.<br />

He eventually returned to <strong>Parra</strong>matta,<br />

played two more seasons in 1957 and 1958,<br />

then retired to help set up <strong>Parra</strong>matta<br />

District Junior Rugby Union.<br />

He was president of Merrylands Junior<br />

Rugby Union and continued to work for<br />

Shell for 32 years before taking redundancy.<br />

Living in North Rocks, he bought a Shell<br />

service station on Pennant Hills Road,<br />

before retiring in 1990.<br />

He later received the Australian Sports<br />

Medal for his contribution to Rugby.<br />

This Friday Master of Ceremonies<br />

Gordon Bray and guest speaker Ray<br />

Hadley will officiate a special birthday<br />

luncheon at Merrylands RSL.<br />

Together they will celebrate the birthday<br />

of a true Aussie legend who paved the way<br />

for rugby as we know it.<br />

A plaque will also be unveiled naming<br />

the Eric Tweedale Stadium, home ground<br />

of the Western Sydney Two Blues.<br />

RACING TO THE<br />

STAGE AT RIVERSIDE<br />

Australian actress Sapidah Kian<br />

is making her post-COVID return<br />

to theatre this week, with<br />

the arrival of ‘The Appleton<br />

Ladies Potato Race’ at Riverside<br />

Theatre in <strong>Parra</strong>matta.<br />

Although working part-time as a teacher<br />

at the Victorian College of the Arts at the<br />

University of Melbourne was able to carry<br />

her through the long 2020 lockdown, she<br />

lost a lot of work.<br />

“I also work as a dramaturg and as a director<br />

as well, in theatre, so I definitely had<br />

three jobs cancelled … it took a little while<br />

for them to get started again,” she said.<br />

“I am really looking forward to getting<br />

back into a room with a group of actors …<br />

and the creative team as well – they’re a<br />

great group of people.<br />

“I really appreciate the digital space but<br />

being in a room with people is something<br />

else,” she laughed.<br />

Sapidah is returning to the production,<br />

having starred in the same role of Rania in<br />

the original 2019 production of the show.<br />

In fact, the entire cast and creative team<br />

behind the 2019 run are returning for the<br />

tour this year.<br />

“It’s not very often in theatre that I get to<br />

play a role twice, so I have really been enjoying<br />

thinking about that character and<br />

where she’s at,” Sapidah said.<br />

Rania, a Syrian refugee, is an outsider in<br />

her new hometown of Appleton, where<br />

she is working to fit in and be accepted by<br />

the regimented, traditional members of<br />

the town.<br />

“After the events of the last year, I think I<br />

view her a little bit differently, particularly<br />

in regard to remoteness and isolation,”<br />

Sapidah said.<br />

“I think it’s definitely re-fitting my understanding<br />

of that experience, having been<br />

in isolation in Melbourne.”<br />

Most of the characters in the play are contending<br />

with the traditions of Appleton,<br />

with the lead character Penny returning to<br />

her hometown and becoming aware of the<br />

disparity in the prize money between the<br />

men’s and women’s annual potato race,<br />

taking place at the Appleton Show.<br />

“They’re all different women with different<br />

experiences … they’re all kind of trying<br />

to find ways to really relate with one another,”<br />

Sapidah said.<br />

However, Sapidah’s other favourite<br />

theme of the play is humour, and she’s<br />

expecting big laughs out of the audience<br />

when the play opens.<br />

“It’s a very funny play … I think that’s<br />

what makes it even more heart-opening as<br />

a play,” she said.<br />

‘The Appleton Ladies Potato Race’ will<br />

play at <strong>Parra</strong>matta’s Riverside Theatre<br />

from Wednesday, <strong>May</strong> 5 until Saturday,<br />

but Channel Nine has already renewed<br />

‘LEGO Masters’ for two more seasons<br />

the outrageous stories of his family and<br />

The second season of one of my favourite<br />

shows from last year, ‘Ted Lasso’,<br />

Director Neil Burger takes us nowhere<br />

particularly new with ‘Voyagers’,<br />

the science-fiction film that sees a<br />

fleet of young people being raised for<br />

the purpose of finding a new Earth.<br />

Born, educated and working on a<br />

spacecraft, these now-teenagers are<br />

tasked with eventually procreating a<br />

new generation, who will be the ones<br />

to take humanity to this promised<br />

land.<br />

But how does one control a ship full<br />

of teenagers, who by reason of hormones<br />

and puberty, are usually at<br />

the worst, most uncontrollable stage<br />

of their lives? It’s a blue drink, swallowed<br />

each day, that suppresses their<br />

emotions artificially. However, when<br />

two of the boys figure out what it’s doing<br />

and stop taking the suppressant,<br />

and begin encouraging others to do<br />

the same – their eyes are opened to a<br />

world of heightened emotion, exhilaration,<br />

sex, and impulsivity. The sole<br />

adult in the film, played by the everimproving-with-age<br />

Colin Farrell,<br />

quickly loses control.<br />

‘Voyagers’ could have taken the audience<br />

to much darker places, given<br />

that these teenagers haven’t been<br />

raised with any sense of how to manage<br />

or control their impulses, but instead<br />

we’re offered something of an<br />

unsatisfying conclusion, which is ultimately<br />

disappointing.<br />

Toyota powers ahead<br />

“Global electrification” strategy continues<br />

At the Shanghai Motor Show last<br />

month, Toyota revealed the bZ4X<br />

Concept vehicle, the first featured<br />

as part of a global electrification strategy,<br />

with plans to expand the range in the<br />

future.<br />

Toyota has stated that there will be seven<br />

‘bZ’ models to be launched globally by<br />

2025, starting with the bZ4X. ‘bZ’ stands<br />

for ‘beyond Zero’, highlighting the direction<br />

of the company towards a range of<br />

future electrified powertrains, including<br />

BEV.<br />

Toyota Australia has pledged its commitment<br />

to this strategy, further highlighting<br />

its leadership in electrified technology<br />

and confirming it will introduce the<br />

Toyota bZ4X battery electric vehicle to<br />

the Australian market, with timing to be<br />

confirmed closer to launch.<br />

The latest electrification announcement<br />

follows the launch of the all-new Mirai<br />

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle in Australia and<br />

the recent opening by Toyota Australia of<br />

Victoria’s first commercial grade Hydrogen<br />

refuelling station.<br />

The recently revealed Toyota bZ4X.<br />

Toyota has been a pioneer in electric<br />

vehicles in Australia, making hybrid electric<br />

vehicles mainstream, now representing<br />

more than 85 per cent of all electrified<br />

vehicles sold in Australia.<br />

With the introduction of the hybrid<br />

Kluger in June, Toyota will have eight<br />

hybrid electric vehicles in its line-up.<br />

“Adding the first battery electric vehicle<br />

to our range builds on our approach of<br />

providing a variety of powertrain options,<br />

while reducing emissions. Further ‘bZ’<br />

series vehicles will be considered and<br />

introduced as appropriate for Australia<br />

in due course, expanding Toyota’s electrified<br />

vehicle choices,” Toyota Australia<br />

Vice President Sales and Marketing, Sean<br />

Hanley said.<br />

“Our approach reiterates Toyota Australia’s<br />

absolute commitment to reducing its<br />

CO2 footprint and the adoption of new<br />

technologies across our extensive range of<br />

vehicles, whilst recognising the different<br />

practical needs of Australian customers<br />

and geographies. Offering a number of<br />

powertrain choices to suit customer needs<br />

is essential.<br />

“Globally, Toyota has more than 20 years<br />

Lidcombe Oval grandstand set to be re-named as tribute to league legend<br />

The Lidcombe Oval grandstand is<br />

set to bear the name of recently<br />

passed Wests Magpies legend<br />

Tommy Raudonikis, honoring his contribution<br />

to rugby league.<br />

Cumberland City Council resolved<br />

unanimously at a recent Council meeting<br />

to move forward with a proposal to name<br />

the grandstand after Raudonikis, who<br />

passed away recently.<br />

A member of the NRL & NSWRL Hall of<br />

Fame, he made 202 appearances for the<br />

Magpies between 1969 and 1979, as well<br />

as 24 appearances for NSW and played 29<br />

Tests for Australia.<br />

Cumberland City <strong>May</strong>or Steve Christou<br />

said he was saddened to hear of his passing.<br />

“Tommy was part of the Cumberland<br />

City Council fabric and his debut season<br />

with the Wests Magpies was at none other<br />

than the Lidcombe Oval in 1969,” he said.<br />

“The oval and grandstand are listed as<br />

locally significant heritage and have a long<br />

history with rugby league and the Wests<br />

Magpies.”<br />

Given the 50 year history of the club and<br />

Lynda Voltz wants to see the Lidcombe Oval grandstand refurbished.<br />

his contribution to the game he said it was<br />

only fitting to name the grandstand in his<br />

honour.<br />

“He leaves behind a lasting legacy,” Cr<br />

Christou said.<br />

Cumberland City Councillor Glenn<br />

Elmore said he remembers going to the<br />

games in the late 1970’s when he was at<br />

school and watched the battles that took<br />

place at Lidcombe Oval.<br />

“There’s nothing more fitting than to<br />

name something after the great man<br />

Auburn MP and Shadow Minister for<br />

Sport Lynda Voltz is now calling for the<br />

Lidcombe Oval grandstand to be refurbished<br />

in conjunction with the rename.<br />

Raudonikis, Ms Voltz said Council needed<br />

to refurbish the stand.<br />

“With the Wests Magpies returning<br />

to Lidcombe Oval permanently in their<br />

senior teams, the ground deserves some<br />

upgrades,” she said.<br />

“This grandstand has been long<br />

neglected and putting Tommy Raudonikis’<br />

name to it is the perfect opportunity<br />

for Cumberland Council to upgrade it and<br />

bring it up to standard.”<br />

A report regarding the grandstand<br />

naming is to be returned to the Council<br />

following public exhibition.<br />

Greystanes Goannas encourage youngsters to join the club this winter<br />

The winter sporting season is already in<br />

full swing in the area, but one local club<br />

is still welcoming new recruits with<br />

open arms.<br />

Numerous opportunities currently exist for<br />

players at the Greystanes Goannas, a Junior<br />

Australian Rules Football Club who play out<br />

of the Gipps Road Sporting Complex in Smithfield.<br />

Despite the Junior AFL season being a few<br />

weeks old, the Goannas are in desperate need<br />

of female players aged between 12-16 to join<br />

their ranks.<br />

Experience in Aussie Rules is not necessary,<br />

however if your child is involved with Little<br />

Athletics during the summer months, AFL<br />

could be a great option.<br />

“I’m very biased but, personally, I think AFL is<br />

the best football code for young kids around,”<br />

Goannas Committee Member and Head Coach,<br />

Michael Bright told <strong>Parra</strong> <strong>News</strong> this week.<br />

“There’s so many kids in our area that do Little<br />

Athletics over summer and AFL is probably the<br />

perfect sport to match that, particularly the<br />

running types and styles.”<br />

Home and away matches are played on<br />

Sundays, with the regular season running until<br />

August followed by Finals for the top teams.<br />

Training sessions are held on Wednesday<br />

evenings and late Friday afternoons.<br />

Bright said players that sign up to his club<br />

won’t just get a game of footy each week, but an<br />

important lesson in life also.<br />

“At the Goannas we tend to focus on the<br />

person first. We believe if we get the person<br />

right, the footballer will come second,” he said.<br />

“The three core values of our club is culture,<br />

community and career, and a good person<br />

makes up all of those, not just a good footballer.<br />

“So, what we try to do is arm our players with<br />

the life skills that will give them the confidence<br />

and inspiration to want to go out and do something<br />

outstanding with their life.”<br />

At a typical Goannas training session, you<br />

might hear a motivational speech from someone<br />

high up in the AFL world or you might<br />

partake in a yoga session to help clear the mind<br />

– just about everything is on offer to players at<br />

one of the largest and most successful clubs in<br />

“We try and roll different people in each week,<br />

so it’s not always the same voice the players are<br />

hearing,” Bright said.<br />

“We’ll do yoga sessions, physios will come<br />

down and we even had Nick Davis from the<br />

Sydney Swans out recently to chat with the<br />

groups.”<br />
