SIK-Holz®
SIK-Holz® is an owner managed, mid-sized company, based in the south of
Berlin, Germany. Founded in 1988, the company’s expertise is certified by the
German chamber of wood sculpting crafts. It specializes in planning, designing
and the sustainable production of individual playground equipment made from
Robinia wood.

The name SIK-Holz® not only stands for individual products
made from Robinia wood, it also stands for more
than 220 people creating these products. They are mainly
joiners, carpenters and wood carvers, but also mechanics,
clerks and engineers. All of them contribute to the success
of the company with their high level of responsibility.
At SIK-Holz®, all departments exist under one umbrella
– from construction design to production of playground
equipment to installation on site. It’s possible to
follow the development of a product from tree trunk to
finished playground equipment through the individual
production areas.
Each of our products is unique. Irregularities in growth,
grain, tree rings, branches and roots give our playground
equipment and sculptures their individual character and
make them special. The natural form and structure of
the wood are maintained and have a crucial influence on
the impression of our products.
By participating in societal networks we assume responsibility,
especially for children and their right to free play.
On the regional level, we actively participate in a company-school-cooperation.
Through this direct exchange, we
are able to better understand school children’s needs and
provide them an insight into the world of work.
After successful completion of a company-wide assessment,
SIK-Holz® has been awarded a federal seal of
approval for environmentally responsible crafts in the
year 2010. This seal specifies a functioning environmental
management system which verifies the environmental
sustainability of all operational processes on a regular
basis. In addition, we use climate friendly power from
the Electric Power Company Schönau, generated from
renewable energy and combined heat and power, with
harmful CO2 emissions being 90% lower than the German
average. This is our contribution to the necessary
transition to clean energy.

We use environmentally benign wood stain for our playground equipment
which is carefully crafted and soundly constructed. All wooden
parts are bevelled, sharp edges and corners are chamfered. Timber joints
(for example braces, extensions and crossings) are force-locked. Nettings
and ropes are made of 4-stranded Hercules (nylon) material with a steel
inlay. All fastening elements such as screws, bolts and brackets are zinc
coated. Protruding metal parts such as bolt heads are made round, nuts
and the like are recessed and secured with plastic caps. Slides are made
of solid stainless steel with a thickness of 2.5 mm. Bars and climbing
poles are made of stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 33.7 mm.
▶ By default our equipment is coated in Robinia light, unless stated otherwise. We are happy to
arrange wood stains and rope colours according to your wishes.

SIK-Holz® › The Schoolyard
The Schoolyard
From barrack square to adventure space
School is an important element of our society. Everyone
has spent a great part of life in school. Alongside with
family, school is where values, skills and mindsets are imparted
for the whole life. Everyone has been influenced
by school and remembers schooldays and the schoolyard
to a greater or lesser extent.
The elder generation might remember it as a place with
trees, shrubs and paths to hidden places, an adjacent
school garden and a sports ground. This might have still
been the case in the 60s. Over time, these schoolyards
have been transformed to barrack squares for the sake
of improved orderliness and tidiness. It became apparent
that such schoolyards are more prone to causing
accidents. To avoid accidents, supervision during breaks
is intensified, which in turn calls for improved visibility
of the area. A vicious circle! What can be done? The
vicious circle, that is the clean, tidy and paved area, must
literally be broken up and designed in a way that is
attractive to both students and teachers. This redesign
requires active involvement from students and teachers,
which is to a greater or lesser extend the case in many
places. There is no norm that specifies how this participation
should be carried out. And that’s how it should
be. Else, the result could be standardised schoolyards
with little individual character. There are, however, some

Requirements concerning planning
law and funding and a near-term
realization must be ensured before
the start of participation procedures.
The atmosphere, the method and
the material (for example the plan
of design, images) must be selected
and prepared in a way that
is adequate for the age-group.
The wishes of the children must be
taken seriously. The decisions made
and any rejected suggestions must
be binding and comprehensible.
The design must take into consideration
that spaces and areas
are able to evolve and that future
classes have also an opportunity
to shape their school yard.
Not to be forgotten is the greatest
possible involvement of
stakeholders of the redesign of
the schoolyard (teachers, parents,
janitors, neighbours …)
basic principles that should be observed during implementation
of participation procedures.
User participation can take the form of painted pictures,
wish lists, models and can be selective or project-specific
within the scope of the implementation of individual
construction stages or the care for areas that have already
been newly designed, all in accordance with students’
skills.
We are happy to support you in the implementation of
ideas and conceptions that students developed for their
schoolyards, with our experience as well as our design
and technical know-how.

SIK-Holz® › General Planning Structure
General Planning Structure
The schoolyard begins at the exit door
The division of school yards into functional areas has
proved its worth. These functional areas do not necessarily
need to be distributed equally across the schoolyard.
The size, form and topography as well as the materials
used depend on the way in which the space is used.
Attention should be paid to the gender-specific needs in
some functional areas.
natural
area
creative
area
retreat
area
The entrance area of a school can also be a meeting
point within a neighbourhood. Information about the
school, about public events in the school or in the neighbourhood
should be displayed here in an inviting manner.
This creates a networking function for the school
and improves acceptance within a neighbourhood. The
entrance area is also a waiting place for students and
parents. Covered seating as well as small play and movement
opportunities can make the waiting more pleasant.
Depending on the school size and the number of schoolchildren,
the play and movement area takes up the
largest part of the schoolyard. Natural elements, such as
slopes and valleys, can also play a role in inviting physical
activity. Playground equipment is also important in
this area. Children like both traditional as well as modern
variation of playing and use objects and spaces in very varied
ways. It is crucial to offer a diverse and well-balanced
range of play and movement in this area.
In the nature area children have the opportunity to
experience and understand nature. It is more important
than ever to give the children a chance during their school
day to get to know the interactive dependencies between
plant and animal world and thus to develop a sense of
responsibility for the environment.
Elements for retreat areas should be located in calm
places in the schoolyard. By recessing, raising or planting
around these areas, places of rest are automatically created.
However, they can also deliberately interrupt a larger
area, thus lowering the pace within this area.
The creative area is particularly important at all-day
schools. These include, in particular, areas where one can
play creatively and imaginatively with the elements of
sand and water in the afternoon. Wood and small stones
for building should be available in this area, too. It is also
possible to set up an outdoor workshop, if possible in the
communication
area
scool building
play and movement
area
vicinity of a shed or a storage room for tools and materials.
It can provide opportunities for crafts and arts, either
on a daily or project basis.
Communication areas always form where small or large
groups can sit, stand or lean. Particularly wide stair steps
also facilitate this.
The sports area should not only be used for sports
lessons, but should also be available during breaks and
especially at all-day schools in the afternoon. The classic
sports stadium is not necessary for this. It makes sense
to have several smaller areas (e.g. football, volleyball or
basketball). In these areas, manageable groups with the
same intentions and interests often meet. In addition, the
orientation in a smaller room is easier and the change to a
different game is possible more quickly.
Experience and understand nature
With relatively small financial means, dreary schoolyards
can be turned into open air laboratories for
a dynamic and enthusiastic learning experience. To
achieve this, every schoolyard needs a sustainable
"green framework" of trees, shrubs, lawns and flower
beds. The more diversity, the better. It is comparatively
easy to bring a beautiful flower field to the schoolyard.
It requires only a pieces of open soil. Already in the
first year many wild herbs will grow.
The interaction of flora and fauna can be increased
within the areas of the schoolyard which are not
frequented very much. By creating heaps of leaves and
stones, and ideally also a small pond, many birds, insects
and small animals will be attracted to the schoolyard.
Nesting boxes and insect hotels can be built to
observe those animals. Each child should also be able
to experience the life of a plant from sowing to harvest
during his school days. No great efforts are necessary
for this. A small bed for each child, about half a
square meter, is sufficient. Raised beds with a height
of 50 cm are especially advantageous. Here, children
who use wheelchairs or carry prostheses can also do
garden work. Another way to create a little garden for
each child is to use mobile vegetable boxes that can be
taken home during the holidays. After the harvest, the
vegetables can be prepared and eaten together. Or it is
processed into jam, dried fruit or tea. All of these are
defining social experiences with very complex learning
contents. In the computer age these things must not
be lost.
Each child should also learn how waste food and plant
matter become valuable compost. Here the importance
of earthworms, snails, beetles and other bugs can be
learned through observation. Simple compost containers
can be constructed by stacking and wedging some
wooden boards. By evenly mixing dry and wet waste,
annoying odors are prevented. But these also belong to
the sensual experience of nature in a schoolyard.
Other sensory experiences in the schoolyard can be
self-built wind chimes that hang in the trees and
appeal to the sense of hearing. Or the familiar touch
path, which, by touching natural elements with feet
or hands, trains the tactile sense and the temperature
sense. The sense of balance is trained by interesting
opportunities for movement. There are many examples
for this on the following pages. Only the entirety of
the senses lets us experience the dimensions of our self.
10
SIK-Holz® › Play and Movement Area
Sedentary lifestyles are the biggest problem of our health care
system. Obesity, motor weaknesses and an underdeveloped
sense of balance are the consequence, already in childhood.
A major requirement for the conversion or new design
of school yards must therefore be a high number of opportunities
for playing and movement. A schoolyard which offers
many possibilities for movement can contribute decisively to
the quality of the school. This requires an elaborate area layout,
which allows a large number of interactions. Movement
can be encouraged in a variety of ways. Small landscaping
measures and different types of surfaces can help developing
a range of play forms. But smooth, paved surfaces also have
their charm. They are suitable for ground and ball games
during the breaks as well as for skateboarding and streetball
in the afternoon. Slopes invite running up and down again.
Combining them with bridges, beams or ropes results in a
wide array of play paths. Stairs that lead to a higher or deeper
plateau are also a basic element of encouraging movement in a
schoolyard. For this purpose, the classical stair dimensions can
vary in height and width in order to increase attention.
The arrangement of play equipment must fit the overall
picture of the schoolyard. Interestingly designed climbing
structures, taking into account the age structure, can both
encourage movement as well as invite to relax on high-level
platforms. In any case, the equipment should be designed in a
way that allows access for as many children as possible.
Varying surface coverings make a schoolyard come
alive. The choice of cover must be in accordance with the
function of the surface. Grass, for example, is only suitable
on larger areas. Pavement is appropriate where a high user
frequency exists and gravel or wood chips are suitable as fall
protection material under play structures.

SIK-Holz® › Sports Area
Sport lessons are a welcome relief during a school day.
Physical and mental exertion and relaxation, playful
individual and group experiences offer a holistic experience.
This experience includes the learning of social
behaviors that are important for the whole of life. In
sport, children learn to deal with defeat. They also learn
to compare themselves strategically, mentally or physically
with others and to exchange ideas. In sport, the
handling of conflict situations and aggression is trained.
In the case of individual sports, the students learn to pit
their strength against others and to evaluate their own
performance. In team sports, on the other hand, a team
spirit emerges, which strengthens the social competence
of the individual players.
Model schools, which have introduced a daily
sports lesson to the class schedule, generally show better
learning outcomes and social skills among the pupils
than schools that only offer a sport lesson twice a week.
School sports facilities should therefore not only be used
for sports lessons, but should also be available during
the breaks and particularly for all-day schools also in the
afternoon. The classic sports stadium is not necessary for
this. It makes more sense to have several smaller areas. In
these areas, manageable groups with the same intentions
and interests often meet. In addition, the orientation in a
smaller room is easier for the participants and the transition
to a different game is quicker.
When planning sports areas, free walls can also
be used to paint goals or to mount basketball hoops. It
should be checked beforehand whether windows are at
risk by the ball games and should be latticed if necessary.
SIK-Holz® › Communication- and Retreat Area
Communication areas are both places of rest as well as
places of attentiveness. Equipped with simple wooden or
stone seating elements, they encourage student’s social
contacts during breaks and when lessons are over.
The design of the seat elements should take unconventional
forms into account. Not the classic bench
on which the students sit next to each other is in demand
here, but structures on which one can lounge
around or “chill”. Sculptures, which sometimes exert a
greater attraction, can also take over this function.
These types of meeting places not only offer the
opportunity to retreat and relax. They are also used to
present oneself in a small group. A small platform can
readily become a stage and a seating log an auditorium.
The larger these places are, the more they are able to
assume the function of an open-air classroom.
In principle, every opportunity should be used for
teaching outdoors. Tribunes with several platforms, built
in a semi or three-quarter circle or in an open rectangle
or square, are proven to be of value. At the minimum, an
open-air classroom should have 15 seats, as well as the
possibility to add chairs or benches as required. When
putting an open-air classroom in place, it must be taken
into account that it does not interfere with other classrooms.
All forms of meeting places, whether seating
group, hangout or open-air classroom, are important for
social and educational aspects and are indispensable in a
schoolyard.
