SIK-Holz®
SIK-Holz® is an owner-managed, medium-sized and sustainably
producing enterprise based in the south of Berlin. Founded in 1988
the company became specialized in wood sculpturing with a focus
on planning, designing and production of customised children’s
The name SIK-Holz® not only stands for individual products
made of Robinia wood, it also represents more than
220 people, who manufacture these products. These are
mostly carpenters, cabinet makers and wood sculptors,
but also locksmiths, merchants and engineers. All of them
exercise a high degree of responsibility which contributes
to the success of the company.
At SIK-Holz® you will find all company divisions
consolidated – from the first design of a play structure to
its installation on site. In the individual manufacturing
processes you can follow the making of a product from a
log to the finished piece of equipment.
Every piece is unique. Irregularities in growth, pattern,
branches and roots leave our sculptures and equipment
their individual character and make them special. The
natural form and structure of the wood is retained and
shapes the unique character and the expression of our
objects.
For decades we have been gathering experience from theory
and practice in order to understand the physical and mental
development of children better. This influences our cooperation
and membership in social networks and environmental
projects. Here we take our responsibility for the children
and their right to a free play. We are committed to the region
as part of our school sponsorship program. Through this
direct exchange, we learn what moves students today and
give them an insight into the world of work.
In 2010, SIK-Holz® was successfully tested for its operational
environmental situation and awarded the «Brandenburger
Umweltsiegel im Handwerk» (Brandenburg eco-label in
the skilled trades) in 2010. This seal describes a functioning
environmental management system in which all operational
processes are subjected to an environmental impact assessment
on a regular basis. In addition, we purchase nuclearand
coal-free electricity from renewable energies. This is
our contribution to the necessary energy turnaround.

f. w. a. fröbel
The Kindergarten
Fröbels idea has proved it’s worth
The provision of kindergartens for children was and
always will be a political issue. A line can be drawn in the
debate directly from 1840 until the present day. It has
been over 160 years since Friedrich Wilhelm August
Froebel first developed the concept of a kindergarten.
Froebel popularised the notion of a kindergarten that
was supposed to be family-supporting and complementary.
The neologism of the word ‹kindergarten› (in German
literally child’s garden) was intended in a very visual sense.
It goes back to Froebel’s affinity with nature and the
romantic spirit of his time. It is certainly not meant as an
implication that children can be compared to plants with
its associated notions of cultivating an investment.
Froebel’s concept of «education through personal
development» has a dual nature at its core: «giving
and receiving, unifying and analysing, regulating and
yielding, intervening and tolerating, determining and
allowing freedom, permanent and flexible...» Children
are nurtured towards autonomy and self-determination
through this duality. Froebel’s regard was continued by
his students and today enjoys world-wide esteem. His
basic instructional shapes – sphere, cube and cylinder –
remain popular to this day, and can be found in many
children’s toys from the most diverse materials.
Kindergarten-age is a decisive stage in life and will
impact on the future communicative capabilities of
the child. The personality and habits of a lifetime are
moulded at this early stage, and interest is awakened in
discovering the world. A child’s activities are conscious
processes that reflect his/her emotional environment.
Parents and educators regard the first priority of the
kindergarten to be to promote the child’s creativity,
fantasy, and self-esteem. For this they need the support
of society at large.
Yet even 160 years after the development of the kindergarten
it has not achieved universal recognition as an
essential component of the social infrastructure of an
industrialised country. There are insufficient kindergarten
places, and also large discrepancies in the quality of
service provided. These range from predominantly functional
child care facilities to educational establishments.
The political context comes into play where uniform
standards are stipulated, as for example group sizes,
professional qualifications, pedagogical principles, etc.
Kindergartens should have the same priority in society
as schools.

Age Profile in Kindergartens
Planning play equipment age-based
It’s the game,
and just the game,
that makes peeople
complete.
friedrich schiller
A child’s development is very dynamic during the first
six years. However, it is worth taking into account that
the development process of each individual child is very
different, and children make large advances in their
mobileity between the ages of one and three.
The initial means of movement is crawling.
Most babies begin to crawl between eight and eleven
months. Some babies skip this phase altogether, whereby
they do not crawl at all and pull themselves straight into
a stand from a sitting position.
At around ten months, babies begin to move
sideways from a standing position. They then learn to get
through narrow gaps between fixed objects until the age
of around 14–16 months, when they begin to take their
first steps without assistance. Now begins the phase of
climbing onto chairs, tables and other low-level platforms.
However, this climbing is characterised by pulling
themselves up to a higher level using their arms. Later,
children consciously use their feet to push themselves up
and cover larger distances. At around three years of age
children now have the ability to fully support themselves.
DIN EN 1176, the standard for playground
equipment, therefore requires constant supervision for
children under three years when using children’s playgrounds.
This is also guaranteed at nurseries. However,
many carers are unable to constantly supervise every
single child. It is therefore recommended to arrange
the outdoor area such so that it is divided into sections
suitable for the child’s level of ability.
1
2
3
4
The suitability of playground equipment
for children under three years is therefore specially
characterised in the following.
Platforms are recommended with a height of up
to a maximum of 1.0 m, which children can use
by themselves. Railings are required for platform
heights above 60 cm.
Ascents, such as ramps and steps up to platforms
higher than 60 cm must be fitted with railings
starting from the lowest point.
Swings should be positioned separately and not be
integrated with swings for older children.
Slide exits should be positioned at less than 20 cm.
Emergency situations can never be completely avoided.
For this reason equipment for older children in the kindergarten
must always have ready access for adults and/
or include the capability for providing assistance.

The free activity area can be shaped by a slight
modulation of the terrain with a large agility structure
integrated into a designed environment. There should
be small relaxation and viewing points within the agility
structure. These serve as a reward for effort involved to
reach them. The physical demands on the child are not
to be held too low. Even small children need challnges.
The Swing Area are part of the activity area. They
should stand in an alcove and not impede existing pathways.
An assortment of swing types offers both young
and older children a safe and exciting experience.
The Quiet area is distinguished by its organically varyingdesign.
Play houses, sensory games to stimulate the
sense of touch or musical toys, and modular climbing
structures can be installd to enhance this area. Small
children in particular, but also children with impaired
locomotive abilities can play here in a calm environment.
A Sand Play area facilitates creative shaping and
moulding. This kind of activity is especially important
for developing children of kindergarten age. The sand pit
should be a generously dimensioned. A sand baking table,
sandlifts and sand chutes can complement the range
of activities. During summer it should be made sure that
this area is sufficiently shaded.
A small area for a Mobilee building kit site can allow
children to create new constructions from various materials.
It is recommended that there is a store room nearby
for storing materials.
It is also recommended that a Garden is laid out. It can
be designed as a fruit and vegetable plot combined with
a pond or biotope. The essential point is that children
should have the opportunity to experience the cycle of
nature and learn from nature through their own observations
or from working in the garden.
Open Areas can be used for ball sports of all types. It is
crucial to always regard the outside area as a whole and
not to obstruct this area with individual installations.
A roofed terrace serving as a transition zone between
inside and outside provides space for games in the fresh
air even when the weather is poor.
Along the terrace can have a paved path, continuing
onwards outside, that can be used for wheeled toys.

and dangers,
bischöfin m. jepsen
The terrain modeling is particularly important at the
design stage. The appeal of any outdoor facility is due in
a large measure to its diversity. Topographical variations
in elevation entice the child with an exciting experience
of movement. This is beneficial to coordination and development
of sense of balance. Hills and hollows do not
just make a visual impression; they create new spaces.
These spaces can be consciously deployed to separate play
areas ‒ for example into activity areas and calm areas.
They can also be used as crossings ‒ for example in the
form of a bridge ‒ to connect and extend a play area.
The choice of plants and shrubs can also be used to create
distinctive zones.
Dense thickets can divide different spaces. They offer
places of sanctuary or hideouts and open up a new world
of experience to children. Suitable trees and shrubs include
hazelnut, elder, rowan, lilac, and dwarf willows. These
can also be used to form a wicker tunnel, wicker fencing
or a house of wattles or the branches can be used in play
simply as a stick or bow. Bookstores and the internet
contain a wealth of information on wickerwork skills
and construction methods. When choosing the species of
plant, be aware that the annual growth cycle of the plant
should be visible to children. The blossoms in spring and
fruits in summer and autumn can be used for educational
purposes.
Direct contact with plant life will stimulate the senses
which are fast developing at kindergarten age. For
instance the sense of smell can be developed by growing
aromatic herbs, which can also be harvested for use in
the kitchen. Flowers stimulate both with their colours
and scents. Fruit bushes and fruit trees encourage a
discriminatory sense of taste. The sense of taste in the
modern age is often unbalanced by the synthetic flavourings
so often used in processed food. Poisonous plants
such as yew, daphne and laburnum have no place in a
kindergarten.
Many more positive benefits for the surface broaching
arrangement trough landscaped and cultivated instruments
could be added here. The awareness of the
environment in general is raised. When children feel
themselves as part of nature, they will all the more support
its protection.
10
SIK-Holz® › Activity play area
There are many options for encouraging physical activity in
outdoor nursery areas. A covered terrace to connect indoor
and outdoor areas provides space for hopscotch or motor
skills games. Simple balancing and climbing structures provide
additional movement stimuli, connected to the scenic
modulation of the area. The change between fixed and moving
elements (e.g. wooden structures and ropes) therefore
demands the child’s complete attention. Various entrances
and exits to platforms, towers or mounds, such as ramps
and slides, encourage different movement from the children.
Combined structures allowing children to move to various
higher levels depending on their stage of development are
interesting. The enclosed design of these floors, created by
means of railings, provides children with a feeling of safety.
Rooms are also available which can be used for role play.
In addition to balancing, climbing and sliding, gym
apparatus, seesaws and swings are also important tools for
encouraging the development of motor skills and a sense of
balance. Seesaws particularly teach the skill of balancing one’s
own body. As a result, children quickly learn to control their
balance even in extreme situations. Gym apparatus promotes
the development of own body tension, allowing children
to try increasingly difficult exercises. Swings should also be
available in the physical activity area. Swinging is one of the
most enjoyable forms of movement. It is a basic need which
has a very calming effect, promoting a dream-like state and
relieving aggression.
In the design of the activity area, the physical challnges
on the child are not to be held too low. Children make
great advances in psychomotor skills during the kindergarten
years, and need ever greater challnges.
SIK-Holz® › quiet area
The quiet area is reserved for quieter, imaginative games.
This can be encouraged by suitable shrub and tree planting,
as already mentioned on page 9. Such modifications
are also important to separate the area from the more
active play areas.
Small children particularly need these boundaries
to be able to orientate themselves and not feel lost in the
vast outdoor area. Peace and a feeling of security are also
conveyed from the enclosed or partially enclosed design
of this area. As well as younger children, children with
disabilities or slower development also need a quiet area
where they can enjoy activities according to their abilities.
Combinations of the equipment pictured below
can create interesting play situations. Sensory games can
be integrated into a play house, or an activity wall with
window holes can become the facade. Play sculptures or
wheeled equipment can also contribute to stimulating
creative role play. They draw children into a joint play
situation that stimulates «learning from one another».
A playhouse to build yourself!
The first action to the building of the Playhouse could take place during kindergarten celebrations. Here the shingles can be painted by the children. If they use colours,
stamps or carving tools depends on their individual skills. Following the shingles have to be sealed with wood oil.
The second action is the construction of the Playhouse. The excavation of the holes is done quickly, if young and old tackle Self-Build-Playhouse together. A layer of
gravel is put in the holes to prevent water logging. The gable ends are then assembled, put into the holes and then connected with the roof battens. Afterwards the shingles
can be nailed one by one. Finally, the roof consists of 80 little pieces of artwork which together form one big image.
The third action is to find a name for the playhouse according to the organisation of a competition.
The fourth action is the ceremonial opening of the Playhouse.
Attention construction site!
Children like to reflect on the world of adults in the game. At this playhouse, they can try out: Build and tear down walls, use windows and boron, set up a shop or apartment
building. The house can take on new forms and functions again and again. The children reenact the various professions they know. The individual steps are divided
and organized in the game. As in the real world of work, a team is formed that solves a task together. So this Playhouse offers many creative and social aspects that are
encouraged by the common game.
The Playhouse is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It comes in one piece. Accessibility must be guaranteed for installation indoors. Outside, a flat area is required.
SIK-Holz® › Sand play area
Sand and water games encourage the use of the hands.
They develop concentration and spatial skills. They stimulate
independent and imaginative creativity.
When playing with sand there is no set aim or
rules. Children can set their own restrictions and goals.
The quality of the sand itself will stimulate what can be
constructed. Water too is a great enticement to children.
It’s a basic need to play with water, to feel it and observe
it. When combining sand with water it becomes a more
cohesive material. It becomes a challenge and a pleasure
to shape. Something new can be created from these materials
over and over again, while all the time the hand
and finger agility is being stimulated and exercised with
precise movements. As children get older, sand and water
games can develop to a whole work cycle. The sand can be
lifted with tools, transported and distributed somewhere
else. Water also can be channeled and dammed with sand.
The first physical laws can be learned during play.
This activity leads to cooperative work, where
plans are made and carried out together. Arguments arise,
compromises are made. The adult world is reflected in
these games. Sand and water games are therefore of great
significance in the development of personality and social
skills of a child.

SIK-Holz® › additional equipment
In addition to the equipment that is assigned to each
play and experiential area during the planning phase,
there are also items that can be in several of the areas or
placed in between areas.
A table and chairs set can for example be used for
an activity, for board games or for eating meals outdoors.
The educator or visitors also need a place to sit down and
watch the children. Seating arrangements can also have a
thematic design that stimulates role play. Games such as
musical chairs are suitable for group activity. If a podium
is added a small theatre area can be created. Many group
activities can be organised here. Seating groups, for example,
can be positioned at the edge of the play area or
planned as their own separate area; whichever best suits
your purposes.
In addition to seating, roofing and shade also play
an important role in the outdoors design of a kindergarten.
Summer, sun and playground all go together.

Every kindergarten is individual. Just as pedagogical concepts
differ, the architecture of the rooms and the outdoor
areas are different too.
The following examples show both in outdoor and
indoor areas how interesting play situations can be offered.
The inclusion of the existing topography and the tree
population is very important to create an organic structure
of play offers which are based on the ideas and needs
of young children. In the planning stage ideas are found
quickly. However, during the implementation many ideas
have to be discarded or adjusted or even developed until
there will exist standard-compliant play equipment with a
high entertainment play value.
Tree houses are very popular with children.
They are individual retreats for
adventure game. Unlike multi units, tree
houses have to be planned with a tree.
Ideal healthy and full-grown trees with
widely branched tree limps are suitable.
The shift from the beam into the ground
should have a healthy bark. A tree expert
will estimate whether a tree will be suitable.
Tree houses, nursery / Torino (IT)
There are two possibilities to integrate a
tree into a play unit. In the first variant
the tree will be integrated directly.
Therefore big trees are very suitable. Their
growth is limited. Nevertheless the tree
section has to be chosen bigger than the
tree is. The gab between tree and platform
can be closed or covered with or by a rubber
lip. The root area needs a special care.
Here is only a manual excavation permitted.
Here we also have the possibility to
avoid huge excavations by special post
shoes. The second variants of integrating
trees consist of spacious enclosure of the
tree with multi platforms. This is adviable
for younger trees. Due to the bigger
distance to the play activities the younger
tree will be more protected.
Many Kindergartens in major cities have
limited outer areas for playing. In order
to make optimum use of these limited
outer areas a careful and creative planning
is required. The installation of one or
several swings already requires lot of space
and a location that is not crossed by game
paths. Additionally a big sand area is necessary
in which lots of toddlers can dig
extensively. For climbing and balancing
unit will only remain less space. For that
reason it makes sense to use every niche,
for example offers for role-plays under
staircases. Here is should be note that the
sand play area is big enough and not badly
built by entrance and exits. Especially
in narrow play areas the measurement for
the installation of play equipment is very
important during the planning in order
to comply with all safety-relevant distances
and fall heights.
Interesting play areas arise by level difference.
Artistic, effective height sand deeps
arise automatically by hill properties.
However, there are also large play areas on
which the play equipment does not come
into its own. By modeling these surfaces
with different functions new play areas
will arise. Hills and valleys animate to run
up and down. Platform and playhouses
on the hill can be worthwhile targets
for resting and observing. Connecting
bridges, beams or simple ropes between
two hills or a hill and a play unit create
path structures with different difficulty
levels. A crawling tube leading through a
hill increases the tension within these motion
sequences and creates places to hide.
Water play units which are following the
gradient are very suitable. Little terraces
along the the system establish that children
are able to stow water on different
places. For modeling a hill recycled debris
from an excavation of a safety surface can
be used as topsoil. The hills should not
be too steep, to avoid a slipping of the
planting and to facilitate the maintenance
and care.
Indoor play areas ‹ Case studies ‹ SIK-Holz® 97
Indoor play areas normally are hall
playgrounds with a huge climbing maze,
slides, ball pools and a bordering fast food
gastronomy. On bad weather children can
play and move extensively. In Kindergartens
also are indoor playground requested.
They correspondingly are smaller and
mostly housed in separate rooms. It can
be a small moving structure in a gymnastic
room or a tiny play unit which offers
climbing possibilities and role-plays.
The different levels create more play and
movement areas which are used by the
children for climbing and hiding. In the
hiding places, mind games can be good
integrated. That means here also materials
can be used, which are not suitable for
outdoor installation. During the planning,
the accessibility and the mounting
to the floor and walls, as well as the
necessary fall protection play a major role.
Normally indoor play units have to be
built on building site. The fastening takes
place via special dowels. By using high
balustrades or cladding it is possible to
renounce the equipment with fall protection.
