Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different
on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of
the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the
victuals provided by local eateries.
The place: Out There Coffee on the edge of the Washington Commons.
We wanted to chat more about the small spots around town so
let’s call this week “Where We’re Snackin.”
The owner: We’re so used to seeing Nikki behind the counter that
it was nice surprise running into Craig for a change. They just made it
through another jam-packed weekend, and he told us these have been
the busiest spring weekends they’ve ever had. They are also moving
some things around inside to better the flow of the customer experience.
Out There Coffee has a one-way-in and one-way-out floor plan
so once you walk in, you can see all there most popular coffee drinks
followed by some of there other tasty treats and drinks.
New for the season: Craig was very excited to tell us about their
new energy balls expected to be a big hit this summer. These are their
take on an all-natural granola bar. Out There Coffee will be rotating
through a variety of flavors including cinnamon maple, lemon-coco
poppy, ginger-carrot and cashew-cherry. Out There Coffee also offers
many other delicious baked goods and some gluten-free options with
plenty of choices for everyone.
The snacks: Kayla and Nicole are always in need of extra caffeine
during the workday, so a coffee run is always on their schedule. Kayla
enjoyed a hot chai tea latte and blueberry muffin while Nicole went
for an iced Lumberjack — one of Out There’s most popular drinks —
and a chocolate chip muffin. It was a great pick-me-up and it’s a nice
bonus that they include all ingredients on the muffin packaging, so
customers know exactly what they’re eating.
The takeaway: Out There Coffee is a great local spot to grab a
quick snack and coffee when you’re on the go or just in the mood for
something tasty. They also offer smoothies, matcha, teas and a variety
of lattes and even draft cold brew. Out There is open Fri-Sun, 7am to
5pm and Mon 7am to 1pm. Stop in and ask them about their rewards
program — Nicole and Kayla have both earned their free coffee!

FEED OUR FRIENDS
Exit Zero delivered dinner to John and Abigail Hanstein this week as part of Feed Our Friends. They were nominated by Danielle Smith who told us their two newborns,
Benjamin and Levi were born premature and have been in the NICU for 34 days. John also recently lost his mother and with constant trips to the hospital to
visit the boys who are growing and doing better every day, a hot meal was a nice gesture of help. The family enjoyed a chopper salad, Brussels sprouts, coco shrimp
curry, build-your-own burger, peanut butter pie and blood orange Pellegrinos.
Do you know someone who you’d like to nominate? It could be someone who has been a great volunteer and community servant, or someone who just needs a
break. The ONLY way to nominate someone is to write to info@exitzero.com with FEED OUR FRIENDS in the subject line. Give us the name, address and cell number.
Plus a sentence on why they deserve it. We will do the rest!
Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
I’ll be writing this week’s and next week’s
columns today since I’m under a stoopid
14-day Covid quarantine. All this time,
all 400+ days to flatten the curve, and I
get it now, the week my full-time music
schedule kicks in, two days after receiving my
first Pfizer shot, four days before cousin Ashley
Fiorentino’s wedding, the event that had been
light at the end of this bullshit tunnel for the last
several months, three days after dropping about
$1500 on new suits for me, Owen and Henry
that we were going to look really snazzy in, five
days before playing a first-ever duo gig with the
awesomely talented Camille Peruto, which I
was really looking forward to, seven days before
debuting my new biweekly duo with the equally
insanely talented Nancy Malcun, and on and
on. 400+ days of masking, distancing and in all
other ways being Covid conscience just to get
whacked now. Life is a cosmic joke to which we
are all the punchlines.
Yes, you can expect the rest of this week’s
column to maintain or exceed this level of cantankerousness.
If the song “Imagine” was encased in amber
and scientists extracted its DNA with a tiny drill
and used it to create a person, that person would
be Greta Thunberg.
How Rude! of the Week: Exit 0 Jazz Festival
organizer and someone I thought was my friend,
Michael Kline, popped into EZ on Tuesday,
TNTs first Tuesday of the season, surveyed the
dining room, saw me and Tim… then got a table
outside. Harumph. Harumph, I say.
Speaking of TNT, last Saturday was, how
can I put this delicately, a challenging day at
Exit Zero Filling Station, with the kitchen more
short-handed than usual and the restaurant
absolutely mobbed. To the mob’s credit, most
of them understood that fewer cooks + many
people = longer wait times for tables and food.
But there’s always a few assholes, and boy are
2021 assholes a different breed. Assholes on steroids.
Meaning, the last 400 days or so has only
heightened their assholeishness, but I digress.
So Tim (Joyce, the shy one, I’m the sexy one)
and I forayed out into the parking lot to serenade
the throng and happened upon John Nesbitt and
friends celebrating his 50th birthday in the classic
Rock Studio Zero (one of three nifty vintage
trailers you can rent). More remarkable than it
being John’s 50th was that, for the first time ever,
it was not Megan’s birthday. (This is a joke that
goes back about 25 years so if you get it, congratulations.
You’re old.)
At first, Tim and I kind of grumbled about
having to go outside and felt embarrassed strolling
table to table singing random songs, but
those feelings quickly dissipated after the first
few $20s were thrust into our hands.
Anyway, huge kudos to the kitchen crew at
EZFS, who buckled their chin strips
and cooked their way through it,
some of whom clocked-in for that
shift as servers and dishwashers.
Apology of the Week: To Dave,
not Dan, at Donut Connection in
North Cape May. You will not find
a nicer guy to serve you a cruller
anywhere in the county. And sorry
I haven’t been ordering coffee when
I drop off your magazines lately,
Dave, but by that time I’m about 30
minutes from finishing my route
and about 31 minutes from desperately
needing a rest room. Coffee…
does not help with that.
WCFA Observations of the
Week: I know Harry Nillson is a
very highly regarded songwriter,
but “Lime in the Coconut” is probably
the dumbest song ever written.
I mean, it’s endlessly entertaining,
but very, very dumb. And “I’m From
New Jersey” by John Gorka… I’m
not sure I would classify it as a
GREAT song, but it’s a very necessary
song, because no one in
the history of anyone that has ever
lived in New Jersey has ever called
it “Joisey.”
I actually spent nearly all of my
delivery time on WCFA this week
because last Thursday was Earth
Day and WXPN was just insufferable.
We get it, aging 60s hippies,
Earth good, humans bad. But I’d
argue that songs like Stephen Stills’
“Ecology Song” with lyrics like
“America is lost, figurin’ the cost”’
do more harm to the planet than a
million plastic straws.
After watching Michael C. Hall
in “In the Shadow of the Moon”
and Kate Winslet in “Mare of
Easttown”, two very fine actors,
struggle so badly with it, I’m convinced
the Philly/ DelCo accent
should never be attempted by any
actor. It’s incredibly distracting and
no one outside of that very specific
area will know or even care
that you’re doing it. Imagine Julia
Roberts’ Irish accent in “Michael
Collins” except you just watched
the Eagles lose to Dallas and you’ve
had 27 beers.
I hope to some day pass on to
my grown children the concept of
drying off BEFORE they get out of
the shower.
We are one week closer to me
being able to reveal the awesomeness
that will be the Great Larry
Crinkle Revival!
I’ve been off beer for about a
decade now and am constantly
exploring alternative methods of
intoxication, and while I’ve been
quite enjoying hard seltzers for the
last year or so, what is up with the
odd combinations of flavors? Wild
Cherry and Lemon-Lime with, like,
Guava-Mango and Kiwi-Arugula?
Just put the good flavors with the
good flavors and leave the rest for
the snoots who love the smell of
their own farts.
It makes me very angry that
I live in a world with nine Fast &
Furious movies but only one Master
& Commander.
The other night I fell asleep
with Hulu on, the remote out of
reach and Superstore on auto-play.
So I am now deeply invested in a
show I hate. A lot.
Lastly this week, I recently
zapped the Facebook page I’d
curated over many, many years
because it was just… I’d had
enough. I recently started a new
one that is just to promote my
music gigs and such, and if you
feel like I abruptly unfollowed you
for no reason from the old page,
don’t get mad and call then text
then Facebook me while I’m at the
movies (“Nobody” starring Bob
Odenkirk is bananas, “John Wick”
for us mid-to-late Middle Agers),
just send a friend request to the
new page and I’ll happily accept.
Fair warning, though; as soon as
your political bullshit starts showing
up in my feed, I’m instantly
unfriending. Left, right, up or
down. Everybody’s sick of it.
No Beard & Weight Watch this
week or next. That would be cruel.
Though I fully expect to hit 250
before I see the sun again.
Why is next week Backstreet
Boys week? Because… IT’S
GONNA BE MAY!
’Til next week, don’t get caught
in The Undertow.

Who watched the Oscars last week?
Did your favorite win? Drop a
line and let me know. Meantime,
here’s a film that received zero
Oscar nods but was fun to watch.
Is it a trick of the mind or wishful thinking
when nostalgia overwhelms you? Hold on to
the wishful thinking option. Do you remember
the 1980s? If you weren’t born yet, keep
that to yourself. I was between high school
and college, and admittedly unaware of how
the decade would later be regarded. Berlin
Wall, Reaganomics, rap, PCs, big hair... trends
of the 80s go on. The decade is a backdrop for
one of DC’s more popular movie franchises,
Wonder Woman 1984. Let me point out that 1984
is a year before its star, Gal Gidot, was born.
Who is the villain in the movie? You could
say it is evil business mogul Maxwell Lord,
played by Pedro Pascal. But really the villain
is you and me — and the sometimes-selfish
desires we keep in our hearts. Lord steals
an ancient stone from a recently unearthed
collection supposedly protected by curator
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Barbara Minerva, played by SNL alumna
Kristen Wiig. The relic grants the person
holding it any wish they want.
He took possession of the piece only
after Minerva and Wonder Woman’s alter ego
Diana Prince made their wishes. Minerva
asked to be more confident and powerful like
Diana, her new friend. Diana wished to see
her only love, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) once
more who died in the first Wonder Woman
movie. They both get their wishes.
Maxwell Lord wishes to become the
embodiment of the stone and keeper of all
wishes granted. Trevor does come back to
Diana and she is overjoyed. Minerva gets
special powers, and she is overcome. Lord
becomes the embodiment of the stone, he’s
overwhelmed. His goal is world domination
as he broadcasts his power so each of us can
get our wishes. The axiom turns out to be true,
“be careful what you wish for!”
This film is a thrill ride with new spectacles
— many with Wonder Woman’s gold
lasso. She uses it as a makeshift turbine shield
to deflect bullets and — one of my favorites —
to ride on lightning in the sky. Her ability to
rise above the clouds to simulate flying was a
surreal and beautiful scene.
Minerva changes into a villainess opponent
named Cheetah. I was skeptical about
the often caricature-leaning Wiig pulling this
off, but she makes it happen! High praise also
for Patty Jenkins, who directed this sequel,
creating the worthy film we all wished for.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
As May approaches, Cape May birders
begin to feel the tingle of that
“ol World Series of Birding spirit.
This affliction causes birders to go
without sleep, and spend countless
hours scouting for rare and elusive species
and it culminates on May 8. If it wears feathers
and is designated a distinct species by the
American Ornithological Society, it counts.
You have 24 hours, midnight to midnight to
tally as many species as possible. Winning
totals have exceeded 200 species and Cape
May is so bird rich that nearly 150 species are
possible by viewing from one strategic spot
— some place that has a mix of upland and
wetland habitats plus a commanding view of
the sky. You and your teammates just need
to drink copious amounts of coffee and train
your eyes and ears. You need not be an exceptional
birder to play this game — you don’t
need to be a birder at all. Set a personal goal.
10 species. 20 if you feel emboldened.
Take a more tempered approach and limit
your “big day,” dash to the South Cape May
Meadows or Cape May Point State Park or
Belleplain State Forest plus Jakes Landing. A
dawn start is fine — it’s when birds are most
active and vocalizing. Mid-day is slack time.
Take a break and grab lunch. Begin again in
the evening. If you’ve had enough fun, pack it
in, go home and count your total or earnings if
you choose to use the event as a fundraiser for
your favorite environmental cause. Get your
friends, co-workers and neighbors to pledge
a fixed amount on the total number of species
you find. The environment is everyone’s obligation
and bird-rich Cape May is particularly
important to migratory birds.
You can go on-line to register as an official
World Series team or do your own “big
day.” You’ll need a bird checklist to keep track
of your sightings. They are free at Northwood
Center 701 East Lake Dr., Cape May Point.
As for strategy. Woods and meadows are
best in the morning, marshes, beaches and
near shore waters can wait until after the
morning rush. And if you are near Cape May
Point at noon, listen for the Barred Owls at
the Rea Farm to sound off right after the noon
fire alarm sounds. Those owls vocalize like
clockwork.
On a cautionary note, the mockingbird
that sings near the parking lot at South Cape
May has been known to fool professional big
day teams with its array of bird calls. So, if you
are in the lot and hear a Bobwhite whistle, it’s
probably not. Bobwhites are about as rare as
Ivory-billed Woodpeckers, these days.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoy the new season at SOMA NewArt Gallery!
Is it time to add some art to your walls?
Check out the SOMA Gallery in Cape
May for inspiration.
Humans crave visual art. Since the
dawn of time, we’ve used art to celebrate,
teach and mourn. Art showcases the things
that are important to us, both for our guests
and ourselves. Art connects us to the world
beyond our walls — the journeys we have
taken or hope to take, the people we hope to
encounter, and the animals which amaze us.
Art helps a space feel personal — mark one
of life’s milestones with a large piece or give
yourself a daily smile with a small whimsical
touch. Remember a lost loved one with a
painting of a place you used to meet. If COVID
postponed a trip of a lifetime, hang something
that evokes Tahiti or Paris. If you’ve been ill,
you may want a piece to salute your inner
warrior. Or, after staring at your walls this
year, you may just want something fun.
Historians suggest our earliest artistic
efforts were focused inward because we began
by decorating our bodies. The mummified
remains of a man who lived in Chile 6,000
years ago bears a tattoo of a mustache, for
example. Body painting, tattoos, beading and
feathers may have been used in rites of passage
or to show status, but modern historians
suggest there was also an element of
fun. Early humans enjoyed playing with color
and patterns just as we do. Surviving stone
figurines, drawings on cave walls, and other
artifacts support that playful notion.
Artists have long used the visceral reaction
of laughter to open the door to more
serious contemplation. “Important” artists
through the ages have embraced fun in their
work — Rembrandt’s laughing self-portrait
is a famous example. “Trick” paintings sometimes
require a mirror or special lighting to
reveal their secrets. Street artists and editorial
cartoonists sometimes use sick humor to
address horrific subjects. The current pandemic
wasn’t a month old before art began
appearing on face masks. Art — especially
playful art — helps us to cope.
Visit the SOMA NewArt Gallery if you’re
thinking about adding art to your walls. The
new season begins with three artists — Linda
Kruger Robinson, Annette Alessi, and Molly
Sanger Carpenter. There’s a “Meet the Artists”
event on Saturday, May 1, from 6 to 9pm and it
open to the public on May 1 at 11am. View the
work to be displayed at somagallery.net. Stroll
the Mall and check out the other Cape May
galleries and consider a visit to the Nature
Center pieces that evoke the natural world.
New Show At SOMA
The NewArt Gallery announces first art exhibition of the 2021 season
SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its
first art exhibition of the 2021 season,
featuring three regional solo artists
Robinson is a colorist and first-time exhibitor
at SOMA who pulls inspiration from the South
There will be an opening night Meet the
Artist reception on May 1 from 6 to 9pm. Art
lovers are invited to attend and enjoy an evening
of art and conversation.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My boss and his wife recently had a baby,
and I am hard pressed to figure out what to
give him. I don’t want to look like a suck up and
overdo it, but I also don’t want to give too little
and look like a cheapskate. I’m not sure why I’m
stressing over this. I’m sure he would appreciate
any effort, still…. What do you suggest,
Answer Lady? — Troubled
Dear Troubled
You think too much. If you are going to
invest in thinking – think about the baby not
the parents. There are many avenues which
will result in a thoughtful gesture and not
break the bank. Stop at Happy Baby. The folks
there will hook you up with a lovely assortment
of onesies in a variety of sizes. Secondly, a stop
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
at Cape Atlantic Book Company. It’s never too
soon to start reading to babies, besides it makes
the parents feel good. And no baby shopping
spree is complete without a stop at the Lynn
Arden Children’s Shop. It’s the perfect spot for
an outfit or special toy. None of these purchases
will bankrupt you. All will be appreciated.
Dear Answer Lady
I remarried last year. My stepdaughter is
in her 20s and very attractive. She and I were
shopping over the Easter weekend and I happened
to run into my old boyfriend, whom I was
dating before I met her father. We were very
attracted to one another, but he did not want
marriage. I discovered that the two of them are
dating and it is very awkward. I told my husband,
but he dismissed it and suggested that
it should not matter to me unless I still feel an
attraction to him. I almost feel as though my ex
is doing this intentionally to get back at me. He
is 20 years older than she. Can I say anything?
Is there nothing I can do? Do I include them at
family functions? — Steaming
Dear Steaming
The lovely thing about COVID is that you
need not have any family functions and, if you
do, limit them. Irksome though it might be —
and you may be right about his intentions, but
plough through and ignore it. Your ex could be
unworthy of you and your stepdaughter, but
she must discover that herself. Be happy you
made the right choice. Meanwhile, you need to
de-stress. Visit to Good Scents. Smell the candles.
Enjoy the candles. Buy a candle. Breathe.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
LADY BLUE is a stunning, 40-pound girl who
is eager to join a loving home. At just a year
and half old, Lady Blue has excellent leash
manners but is still learning some behavior
cues. Her favorite activities are taking long
walks, car rides and chasing toys in the yard.
Lady Blue would be best in a home with older
children and as the only pet.
MOLLY is a fun-loving, 30-pound, wirehaired
girl who came to the shelter when her
family could not take her along when they
moved. Her leash manners are improving but
she knows many other behavior cues such as
sit, stay and wait. Molly loves children and
going on car rides. She is very affectionate and
ready to find a family to return the love.
CALI is a five-year-old, 44-pound girl who
came to the shelter when her owner was
unable to care for her. She loves to play fetch,
enjoys brisk walks, and has a perpetual smile.
Cali loves people and while she sometimes
jumps for attention, she knows many behavior
cues to calm her energy. She would make a
great family pet!
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
DUSTIN has been at the shelter since April
2017. He was a feral cat but is one of the friendliest
at the shelter. Dustin likes his routine and
tends to jump on tables. He doesn’t get along
with other cats but loves dogs. He is up to date
on all vaccinations and experienced cat owners
would be best. If interested in adopting
Dustin, contact the shelter.
ROSIE is a three-year-old girl who was surrendered
due to her previous owner’s allergies
and health issues — they could no longer
care for her. She is a sweet house cat but has
enjoyed some time outside in the yard. Rosie
loves attention and would make a great addition
to a loving family. She would be good in a
home with children and other cats.
SASHA is a great companion kitty and loves
attention. She is an indoor cat who loves to
sit by your side while watching TV. Sasha was
very jealous of the other cat in her last home
and would bully her for food. She is very loving
but would be best as the only cat in the house.
She is wonderful with children and up to date
on all vaccinations.
