The first day of the month 

of May is known as May 

Day. Flowers and trees 

start to blossom. It is also known 

as Labour Day and is a national 

holiday that celebrates the social 

and economic achievements of Spain’s 

workers across the country. 

May’s weather takes things up by another 

level in Spain. Average temperatures reach 20 

degrees Celsius, and sunshine hours make the 

jump to 10 hours a day. With some hot days 

on the way, it is time to use the sun cream 

especially a day by the pool or the beach, as the 

effects of not keeping protected from the sun will 

start to be felt in May. 

It is the most excellent time of the year when 

dining “al fresco” is at its best. Spain offers 

so much with its sandy beaches, markets, 

golf courses, great restaurants with lovely 

countryside of citrus fruit, almond and date 

palm trees. 

Sunday May 2nd in Spain is Mother’s day. 

Sunday June 20th Father’s day in England. 

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was 

first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held 

a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West 

Virginia. 

Celebrations of mothers can be traced back 

to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held 

festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea 

and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent 

for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival 

known as “Mothering Sunday.” 

Father’s Day all began when a young woman 

wanted to honour her dad. In May of 1909, 

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washngton, sat 

in church listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. 

She decided she wanted to designate a day for 

her dad, William Jackson Smart. 

DEAR READER 

In Alicante city, May sees the 

regular flower fiesta, known to the 

locals as Cruces de Mayo. The area of 

Santa Cruz dresses up quite literally 

in flowers with awards being handed 

out to the best designs. 

Alternatively, the Parque Natural de 

Penyal D’Ifach in the calmer area of Calpe offers 

some excellent views of the sea and the cliffs, 

and is a great place for walkers to take in some of 

Costa Blanca’s more exotic areas. 

RHS Announces Plans to Run 2021 RHS 

Chelsea Flower Show safely for reduced numbers 

of visitors over increased days. The Show will 

run for 6 days from Tuesday 18 May to Sunday 

23 May. 

First held in 1913, the Chelsea Flower Show 

is held in the beautiful grounds of the Royal 

Hospital, Chelsea. 

The Palmeral of Elche, Spain, is Europe’s only 

Palm Forest and the setting is just incredible. 

Worth a visit. 

Your birthday flowers are Lily of the Valley 

and Hawthorne. The fragrant Lily of the valley 

signifies sweetness, humility, and happiness. 

The Hawthorn plant, which represents hope 

and supreme happiness. The May birthstone - 

Emerald, was one of Cleopatra’s favourite gems. 

Ancient Romans went so far as to dedicate this 

stone to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. 

Today, it is thought that Emeralds signify 

wisdom, growth, and patience.

I am an American Citizen living on the Costa 

Blanca with my Spanish husband. My father 

died last week in the USA, after a short battle 

with Coronavirus. My mother is left to pick up 

the pieces and cope as best that she can, and my 

sister lives close by; but in another State. We, 

as sisters, do not get on! I just feel so helpless, 

and am not able to fly back to check on my 

mother. My husband hasn’t worked for several 

months and money is very tight right now. I 

can’t sleep with worry and feel so helpless and 

miserable.

So sorry to get your mail and to hear of 

the death of your father. I know that as an 

American you can travel to re-enter the 

USA; but if funds are low, and you have 

ties here in Spain then there is a reason 

for you to be here right now. Your sister, 

and your relationship with her, is the 

key to all this, and the solution to your 

current dilemma! You can rely on her to 

see that your mother is coping after her 

bereavement; and this is a time to make up 

past differences with your sister, for sure. 

You, as sisters, should unite in your caring 

for your recently widowed mother, as she 

is the priority now. OK it cannot be you 

who visits, but a Zoom or Skype online 

meeting with all three of you costs nothing 

and would be so appreciated by your 

mother. Hopefully your economy will 

improve and you will be able to return to 

see your mother and sister in the not too 

distant future. 

My brother was adopted when he was 

a few months old, but my parents have 

never told him this, and they tell me that 

they are waiting until his eighteenth 

birthday. I have been tempted to tell 

him the truth, but this has gone on for 

so long, and I only hope that he does 

not blame me, big sister, for not sharing 

with him the truth that I know that he 

deserves to hear.

Niocoletta. I strongly disagree that 

any child should be made to wait 

for so long to hear the truth from 

his adopted parents; and so I agree 

with you. What a shocking gift for 

him on his majority birthday. Rather 

than get involved with this lack of 

transparency, make it clear to your 

parents that you disapprove of their 

withholding the truth. When your 

brother does get the news, you can 

tell him your true feelings; and that 

you love him as a brother whether 

you are blood relatives, or not.

I have started to have feelings for my 

neighbour. He has always been thoughtful 

and kind since I moved in, but I had a 

loveless marriage and prior to that an 

abusive relationship. I am so afraid that I 

may be making a fool of myself; and fear 

rejection by him. I just don’t know what 

comes next and we have a friendship I 

would not want to spoil in any way.

is your friend, and you have seen 

in him the sort of man that does 

not fill you with fear, and could be 

capable of loving you. After all you 

have gone through it is so wonderful 

that you seem relaxed and happy 

with this man; since you have been 

unloved and uncared for in previous 

relationships. It is what comes 

next that will determine how your 

relationship grows and decide how 

any subsequent connection would 

work. If you go for confrontation 

and honesty on your part then he 

will be flattered at the very least, but 

he doesn’t appear to be the sort of 

person that could be offended. Stress 

that your neighbourly friendship is of 

the ultimate importance and uphold 

this. Silence is not an option right

In the lockdown I dressed in joggers 

and pyjamas all day and my diet went 

out of the window. Now I have to 

squeeze myself back from comfort wear 

to something more suitable for a terrace 

lunch with a man that I really like. As 

someone not born blonde I can’t even 

look in the mirror either. Need urgent 

help and a manicure! What’s your take

When lockdown hit there was a

slouched around in whatever and 

walked the dog in my slippers. 

My chief, essential, fashion item was 

a black anti Covid 19 mask. 

Ask yourself firstly, why do women 

(or men) wear fashion? There are 

three reasons: To feel good about 

themselves, to compete with other 

women,(or men) and to attract a 

partner. You have accepted this 

invitation, and this man has invited 

you. Whatever you do, just be 

you, be glamorous and have fun. 

Anyone who would disapprove 

of your Covid haircut or analyse 

your amateur nailpolish has to be a 

no-no anyway. Personality will win 

through and it’s you he likes, after 

all.

It’s tough enough to have low vision. But how 

do you decide which magnifier you need, and 

in what circumstances? This guide can help. 

If you are among the growing numbers 

of people with low vision, you 

may find that a low vision 

magnifier can assist with tasks 

such as reading fine print, 

sewing or viewing classroom 

presentations. 

Increased demand for low 

vision devices means many 

more choices are becoming 

available. If you need a low 

vision magnifier, consider visiting 

a low vision specialist for expert 

guidance in ordering just the right 

device for your specific needs, especially if you 

already have substantial vision loss. 

As we grow older, some degree of low vision may 

be inevitable, depending on how long we live. This 

is because aging itself leads to slow degeneration 

of the light-sensitive cells in your retina, 

where vision processing occurs. 

Magnification is needed when you 

start experiencing vision loss in 

the central part of your retina 

called the macula, the area of 

the eye capable of seeing small 

letters. A magnifier enables you 

to compensate somewhat for a 

damaged macula by helping you use 

more of the healthy retina surrounding 

the damaged area to create visual images. 

Certain eye injuries also can permanently 

damage eye structures essential for sharp vision. 

Advanced macular degeneration — a common cause 

of low vision — can create a blind spot in central 

vision. This means you can still see better around 

the edges of your field of view, but you would need

• If you are older, do you have memory loss 

and a decline in cognitive function? If so, 

you probably need to stick with less 

complex devices. 

• Do you drive and want to 

continue driving? Some states 

allow individuals to use a bioptic 

telescope for reading signs 

and seeing traffic lights, but 

an evaluation by a low vision 

clinician is required to see if you 

are a candidate for this option. 

• Do you have an occupation or 

hobby that requires you to see fine 

detail? If so, devices that provide greater 

magnification might be more helpful for you. 

How can magnifiers aid low vision? 

a device to help magnify what you see. A video 

camera magnifier can be adjusted to provide just 

such magnification. 

The optimal magnifier is different for 

different people. Every device has 

advantages and disadvantages. The 

optometrist or low vision spececialist 

don’t prescribe a device. They have 

people choose a device that suits 

their goals and their requirements. 

And they make sure they show them 

alternatives.” 

To enhance your ability to see in 

contrast, you will need to address lighting 

and perhaps try out different color displays 

on desktop video camera magnifiers. The contrast 

on computer and video camera magnifiers can be 

modified to display white letters and characters 

against a black background.

TYPES OF LOW VISION MAGNIFIERS 

Just as some people with a disability need a 

wheelchair or a hearing aid, a person with low vision 

needs extra help beyond what ordinary eyeglasses or 

contact lenses can provide. 

“If you have low vision, you should understand 

that there are no magic glasses,” Eyeglasses usually 

can correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness 

and farsightedness. But, ordinary lenses don’t work 

for permanent blind spots (scotomas) in your visual 

field, caused by common eye diseases such as agerelated 

macular degeneration 

Even so, different configurations of magnifiers 

and video camera magnifiers may at least partially 

compensate for the part of the visual field where 

blind spots have caused vision loss. 

Be aware that one size does not fit all when it 

comes to low vision devices. Dr. Jackson says that a 

particular kind of magnifier helpful to someone with 

peripheral vision loss, for example, might not work 

at all for someone with central vision loss. 

So never rush to buy an expensive device for 

yourself or a family member without doing

PHIL SPECTOR 

Welcome once more to another All 

Time Great. Having only recently 

published an article about Phil 

Spector for the Christmas 2020 edition of 

Out & About , I find myself compelled to 

write about him again in the light of his 

death at the age of 81 on January 16th 2021. 

Spector´s passing, ultimately he was a victim 

of Covid 19, came in the eleventh year of 

his prison sentence for the murder of actress 

Lana Clarkson at his home in 2003 which 

makes it impossible, and quite rightly so, to 

turn any obituary into a eulogy but today 

I am more concerned in giving him credit 

for his undoubted and unique talent in the 

production of pop music. 

Long before his ultimate act of atrocity, 

there had been many rumours and 

accusations about a distinctly unpleasant 

and recurring side to his private life and his 

later attempts to work with contemporary 

artists from the mid 70s onwards had been 

consistently wrecked by his own eccentric 

behaviour and inability to get on with 

people. In the days after his death his ex 

wife Ronnie, who had earlier published 

a harrowing account of her life with him, 

made the public statement that he had been 

a “brilliant producer but a lousy husband”. 

She is one of many to have confirmed that 

Spector was wont to carry a gun and would 

draw it on those with whom he disagreed. It 

is hardly surprising then that eventually he 

would open fire when angered by someone 

not following his bidding, More stories of his 

dark side will doubtless emerge as the weeks 

after his death unfold. 

Going back to Phil Spector´s origins in the 

music it was all so very different. Born in 

the Bronx district of New York City at the 

end of December in 1939, he actually turned 

the inscription on his father´s tombstone (he

had committed suicide while his son was 

just ten) into his first hit. The young Spector 

was a member of a girl abd two boy 

group called The Teddy Bears who 

had a number one hit in 1958 

with a song he had written. 

It was “To Know Him Is To 

Love Him” which became 

a million seller but, soon, 

Spector found that he 

preferred to work on the 

other side of the microphone 

and started to cut his teeth 

as a producer and ceased to 

perform. Early successes and a 

determination to establish his own 

sound led to a collaboration with song writer 

and A & R man Lester Sill which enabled 

them to form their own record label “Philles”. 

Now free and able to do his own thing, as 

long as hit records kept money flowing into 

the books, Spector put together an in house 

team of top session musicians ( who became 

known as The Wrecking Crew) and a stable 

of artists to perform a variety of songs many 

of which he co-wrote and certainly put 

his mark on. The artists signed to Philles 

included Darlene Love, The Crystals, The 

Ronettes and the incredibly named Bob B 

Sox & The Blue Jeans all of whom were black 

and all of whom took part in the famous 

Spector Christmas album I wrote about in 

December. A song NOT written by Spector 

was “He´s A Rebel” which was in fact written 

by Gene Pitney and on the point of release 

by a young Vikki Carr on the Liberty record 

label. Spector nipped in slyly and quickly 

recorded a version using Darlene Love & 

The Blossoms and rushed it on to the market 

in the name of The Crystals on the Philles 

label. In this way he achieved a number one 

record in 1962 but, as a consequence, made 

some enemies too as well as severing with 

Les Sill and taking over full control of his 

label. More (real) hits by The Crystals 

would follow and a number too by 

The Ronettes (who featured the 

Ronnie who became his wife) 

and Spector was also to work, 

briefly, with The Righteous 

Brothers giving us a classic 

hit record in 1965 but also 

pointing the way to future 

controversies. All songs 

produced by him now had his 

trademark kitchen sink style of 

production known ever since as 

“The Wall Of Sound”. This technique 

has been copied by many others with varying 

degrees of success and failure including 

Sonny Bono, who had worked under Spector 

at Philles, and who certainly took the Wall 

Of Sound into the records released by him 

and Cher. It was the commercial failure of 

another collaboration, this time with Ike & 

Tina Turner that led to Spector´s first hiatus 

from the music business at only 26 years old 

in 1966. This was the disappointing chart 

performance of the classic Spector production 

“River Deep , Mountain High” which Spector 

himself thought was his best work to date 

and deserving of far greater reward. 

I will leave this story there for now but will 

have more to say about Phil Spector and his 

activities in next month´s edition, a weekly 

wallow in 60s & 70s pop music. If you missed

Some 55 years ago we discovered some 

of the many wonders that the French 

Loire Valley offers. 

The following stays like a ‘magic jewel’ at 

the front of my mind.... to this day. 

Enter the Outer Courtyard of the Chateau of 

Amboise - the River Loire is far below, out 

of sight, screened by a sheer cliff upon the 

edge of which stands Amboise. 

At the foot of the sloping Courtyard the 

L-shaped Chateau contains many treasures 

and priceless collections. 

But, wait…. look to our left, before we

‘Magic’ 

Garden in Saintes. 

At first, we are 

attracted to the 

peaceful beauty of 

this place, grateful 

for the relief offered 

by shady, midsummer 

trees.... the Garden is beautifullymaintained 

with trim, weed-free walkways 

lining well-ordered flowerbeds. 

We come to the central attraction of this 

“break from reality”.... the low ruins of a 

small, ancient amphitheatre, some of its 

terracings still visible. We are immediately 

‘transported’ back in time.... an old and 

powerful civilization has left its mark here, 

giving us glimpses of what had been before, 

of long-past lives, of gladiatorial conflicts, 

of martyrs and sacrifices to the Gods, lifting 

people out of the ordinariness of their daily 

routines. 

All this took place here, in what is today a 

lovely, “Magic Garden”.

We live cheek by jow(e)l - crowded together, 

feelings over-lap, multiple rivers 

trapped in one valley, a narrow concourse 

where some will thrive, others die! 

Nature will dictate who survives 

and who flows into the great sea - alive! 

For sure, those three trees will mercilessly fight 

to dominate their space - no room for three - just you and me! 

“I was here first” “you only came when you sensed a second game” 

“you invited me in - join us, we’re friends!” 

Then, daggers were drawn; pistols at dawn! 

“I won” “no, you lost” “don’t cry, don’t shout!” 

They jostle, they shout, they fight for space - “keep out!”. 

But, maybe, I read it wrong - perhaps there were only Two Trees?

May 2, 2011 - U.S. Special Operations 

Forces killed Osama bin Laden during 

a raid on his secret compound in 

Abbottabad, Pakistan. The raid marked 

the culmination of a decade-long 

manhunt for the elusive leader of the 

al-Qaeda terrorist organization based 

in the Middle East. Bin Laden had 

ordered the coordinated aerial attacks 

of September 11th, 2001, in which 

four American passenger jets were 

hijacked then crashed, killing nearly 

3,000 persons. Two jets had struck and 

subsequently collapsed the 110-story 

Twin Towers of the World Trade Center 

in New York, while another struck 

the Pentagon building in Washington, 

D.C. A fourth jet also headed toward 

Washington had crashed into a field in 

Pennsylvania as passengers attempted 

to overpower the hijackers on board. 

May 3. Birthday - Golda Meir (1898- 

1978) was born in Kiev, Russia. She 

was one of the founders of the modern 

state of Israel and served as prime 

minister from 1969 to 1974. 

May 4, 1886 - The Haymarket Square 

Riot occurred in Chicago after 180 

police officers advanced on 1,300 

persons gathered in the square 

listening to speeches of labor activists 

and anarchists. A bomb was thrown. 

Seven policemen were killed and over 

50 wounded. Four anarchists were 

then charged with conspiracy to kill, 

convicted and hanged while another 

committed suicide in jail. Three others 

were given lengthy jail terms. 

May 5th - Celebrated in Mexico as 

Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in 

remembrance of the Battle of Puebla 

in 1862, in which Mexican troops 

under General Ignacio Zaragoza, 

outnumbered three to one, defeated the 

invading French forces of Napoleon III. 

May 5, 1865 - Decoration Day was first 

observed in the U.S., with the tradition 

of decorating soldiers’ graves from the 

Civil War with flowers. The observance 

date was later moved to May 30th and 

included American graves from World 

War I and World War II, and became 

better known as Memorial Day. In 

1971, Congress moved Memorial 

Day to the last Monday in May, thus 

creating a three-day holiday weekend. 

May 5, 1893 - The Wall Street Crash 

of 1893 began as stock prices fell 

dramatically. By the end of the year, 

600 banks closed and several big 

railroads were in receivership. Another 

15,000 businesses went bankrupt amid 

20 percent unemployment. It was the 

worst economic crisis in U.S. history 

up to that time. 

May 5, 1961 - Alan Shepard became 

the first American in space. He piloted 

the spacecraft Freedom 7 during a 

15-minute 28-second suborbital flight 

that reached an altitude of 116 miles 

(186 kilometers) above the earth. 

Shepard’s success occurred 23 days 

after the Russians had launched the 

first-ever human in space, cosmonaut 

Yuri Gagarin, during an era of intense 

technological competition between 

the Russians and Americans called the 

Space Race. 

May 7, 1945 - In a small red brick 

schoolhouse in Reims, Germany, 

General Alfred Jodl signed the 

unconditional surrender of all German 

fighting forces thus ending World 

War II in Europe. Russian, American, 

British and French ranking officers 

observed the signing of the document 

which became effective at one minute 

past midnight on May 9th. Jodl was 

then ushered in to see Supreme Allied 

Commander, General Dwight D. 

Eisenhower, who curtly asked Jodl if 

he fully understood the document. 

Eisenhower then informed Jodl that he 

would be held personally responsible 

for any deviation from the terms of the 

surrender. Jodl was then ushered away. 

May 8 Birthday - International Red 

Cross founder and Nobel Prize winner 

Henri Dunant (1828-1910) was born in 

Geneva, Switzerland. He was also a 

founder of the YMCA and organized 

the Geneva Conventions of 1863 and 

1864. 

May 11, 1969 - During the Vietnam 

War, the Battle of “Hamburger Hill” 

began. While attempting to seize 

the Dong Ap Bia Mountain, U.S. 

troops repeatedly scaled the hill 

over a 10-day period and engaged in 

bloody hand-to-hand combat with 

the North Vietnamese. After finally

May 12, 1937 - George VI was crowned

Birthday - British nurse and public 

health activist Florence Nightingale 

(1820-1910) was born in Florence, Italy.

Turkey where she improved hospital 

sanitary conditions and greatly 

reduced the death rate for wounded 

and sick soldiers. She received 

worldwide acclaim for her unselfish 

devotion to nursing, contributed to

May 13, 1981 - Pope John Paul II was 

shot twice at close range while riding 

in an open automobile in St. Peter’s 

Square in Rome. Two other persons 

were also wounded. An escaped 

terrorist, already under sentence of 

death for the murder of a Turkish 

journalist, was immediately arrested 

and was later convicted of attempted 

murder. The Pope recovered and 

later held a private meeting with the 

would-be assassin and then publicly 

forgave him. 

May 14, 1607 - The first permanent 

English settlement in America was 

established at Jamestown, Virginia, by 

a group of royally chartered Virginia 

Company settlers from Plymouth, 

England. 

May 14, 1796 - Smallpox vaccine was 

developed by Dr. Edward Jenner, a 

physician in rural England. He coined 

the term vaccination for the new 

procedure of injecting a milder form 

of the disease into healthy persons 

resulting in immunity. Within 18 

months, 12,000 persons in England 

had been vaccinated and the number 

of smallpox deaths dropped by twothirds. 

May 18, 1804 - Napoleon Bonaparte 

became Emperor of France, snatching

May 20, 1862 - President Abraham 

Lincoln signed the Homestead 

Act opening millions of acres of 

government owned land in the West to

May 20, 1932 - Amelia Earhart became 

the first woman to fly solo across the 

Atlantic. She departed Newfoundland, 

Canada, at 7 p.m. and landed near

years later, along with her navigator 

Fred Noonan, she disappeared while

LIVING ABROAD – 

THE DIFFERENCE 

When I look back now at the early 

days of overseas living, I cringe. 

Admittedly it was before ‘Elf ‘n 

Savety reared its head, days with no seatbelts, 

no kiddie seats, no helmets on bicycles and so 

on. You’ve probably seen the well-worn post 

about how amazing it is that people have lived 

to a ripe old age despite the dangerous world 

we grew up in – from lead paint on our cots to 

playing outdoors all day with no supervision. 

Our perceptions change of course, and even, 

a few countries later, when I was asked why 

I accepted the situations I’d landed in, I had 

no answer for them. I’d been well trained in 

childhood! 

My biggest saving grace was my ignorance. 

One of the first things to get used to in Africa, 

was the heat. Yes, it could get cold there and 

I was amazed to see fireplaces many of the 

homes. Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is 1,795 

metres above sea level which explains the cold 

weather in winter. When I first landed, it was 

hot, very hot and I loved it. I’ve always felt 

the cold, I was the one they would have to 

wrestle to the ground to rip off my jersey for 

the annual class photograph. 

While I was enjoying the heat, I had little 

idea what it would do to the world around 

me. 

It fostered a profusion of floral displays 

and the bugs to go with them. They were 

everywhere and while at first, I was quite 

frightened of them, after a few weeks I would 

brush off the offending insect and even grew 

to like the little geckos which obligingly 

gobbled up the mosquitos which were a pest. 

Their bites brought me up in bright red welts 

which itched and nearly drove me mad. 

On my first shopping trip I was astounded to 

see how cheap meat was in those days. Newly 

arrived from the UK, we could rarely afford 

a thick wedge of juicy beef steak. I brought it 

home and bounced into the kitchen to cook it. 

I had reckoned without Elizabeth, the 

ayah / housekeeper (to be honest they called 

themselves maids and were proud to have a 

job and work for a foreigner – but it’s not a

politically correct word to use these days). 

Elizabeth had very firm ideas 

of where I was allowed and 

not allowed in ‘her’ house 

and chased me out of 

the kitchen – an area 

strictly off limits to the 

Memsahib. 

I spent the whole 

after noon salivating. A 

whole, inch thick steak, 

what a treat. I would 

insist on sharing it of 

course, When it was served 

up, I couldn’t get my teeth 

into it. Why? Dear Elizabeth 

had boiled it. You could have sliced 

it and used it for car tyres. I learned that 

most of the people in the area boiled all their 

meat. I can only surmise they all have very 

strong molars. 

On my next shopping sortie, I purchased 

more steak and this time I insisted on showing 


Elizabeth how to grill it. I enjoyed mine, 

but I suspect she thought I had 

ruined it as later I saw her 

popping her portion into a 

large pan of water. 

I had also bought a 

nice piece of pork that 

day, but by the time I 

got it home, it had gone 

off in the heat. 

The following week 

I purchased a cool box 

and bought a boil in the 

bag bacon joint and packed 

it with ice and it weathered 

the journey back to the house. 

I didn’t occur to me that Elizabeth 

would cook, it under the grill just like 

the steak – plastic and all. 

I would learn, eventually, the hard way.

Edificio Perlamar on the Gabriel Miro, Calpe and is open from 10am until 1pm Mondays to Fridays. 

The president, Elinor Gonzalez lives in Las Bassetes where she cares for 

Calpe’s abandoned and sick animals, bringing them back to health and

WHAT IS A 

SPRAINED ANKLE? 

An ankle sprain is one of 

the most common 

musculoskeletal 

injuries in people of 

all ages. 

The injury 

occurs when we 

overstretch or 

tear a ligament 

or ligaments 

in our ankle, 

this usually 

happens by 

a misstep 

causing our 

ankle to roll 

inwards. 

When this 

occurs the 

ligaments on the 

outer part of the ankle 

(anterior talofibular, 

calcaneofibular and posterior 

talofibular ligaments) become over 

stretched or damaged. 

Most commonly the anterior talofibular 

ligament is affected. 

The severity of the ankle sprain 

depends on how much damage it does 

to these ligaments and joint and how 

unstable the joint becomes as a result of 

this. 

Symptoms of an ankle sprain are the 

following: 

• pain 

• swelling 

• haematoma 

• functional 

disability ( not 

being able to 

walk or move 

ankle after 

injury) 

• instability 

When suffering 

a sprain the last 

4 symptoms 

may tell us how 

bad it is, if there is 

important swelling, 

a lot of bruising, 

inability to walk or 

instability, then it is very 

important to get it checked out 

at a medical centre and an x-ray may 

be required to make sure there aren’t any 

fractures associated to the sprain. 

I always suggest at least one visit to the 

physio/osteopath to ensure the ankle is 

going to heal properly and there aren’t 

any joint mobility issues associated to 

the sprain. Apart from pain and swelling, 

the ankle joint and foot can suffer slight 

mobility restrictions or compressions due 

to the aggressive movement the ankle 

suffered.

We mechanically evaluate: 

• tibia and tallus compression, anterior 

posterior position of the tibia. 

• fibular instability or anterior position of 

said bone. 

• anterior position of the tallus with ot 

without rotation ( we also evaluate the 

back of this bone to ensure that ther 

isn’t any instability which could mean 

fracture. 

• rotation of the navicular or cuboid bone. 

• stiffness of midfoot and metatarsals. 

All of these bones and joints are 

important to evaluate as if gone untreated 

they can slow down the recovery process 

or become a permanent restriction on the 

future. 

After the assessment of these joints 

followed by general mobility and 

stability of the ankle, a taping with special 

bandage is done to ensure the injury 

is protected and the person can walk 

without risk if this I indicated. There are 

other home applications to consider such 

as ice, elevation,etc, that are indicated 

individually depending on the severity of 

the condition. 

Usually after a few weeks if all is going 

according to plan, the physio/osteopath 

may give the patient exercises to help 

work on ankle stability and recover 

propioception and strenght if needed. 

In some cases we refer the patient to a 

sport recovery expert, specially if we are 

talking about a patient that practices sport 

on a regular basis and needs those extra 

exercises.

In conclusion, an ankle sprain can be 

mild or severe, but being assessed by a 

physio/osteopath is always positive as we 

can make sure the recovery will be speedy 

and will avoid problems in the future.

You have never 

had it so good 

I 

recall the words of Prime 

Minister Harold Macmillan 

(1957-1963): ‘you’ve 

never had it so good in 

your lives’. Too young 

to consider the remark 

back then it is only with 

hindsight that I think it 

the only sensible thing 

the half-American premier 

ever said. 

As I was a boy I certainly 

knew the tough times such as 

grinding poverty, home-grown food, 

rationing, and hunger, amidst a bombshattered 

Liverpool. But, on leaving school 

at 15-years-of-age my peers could choose 

from many jobs and careers. 

The ‘Situations Vacant’ columns 

in the Liverpool Echo stretched 

endlessly but I chose to be 

a seaman. At the time, 

350,000 others had chosen 

a seagoing career. Others 

went into the building 

industry or the armed 

forces and made good. 

I didn’t earn as much as 

the landlubbers did but I 

learned more. And, unlike my 

peers, I saw the now-vanished 

world and was reasonably well-paid 

to do so. Furthermore, there was no rent 

and no utilities to pay for. The job was 

healthy and mostly enjoyable. The food was 

wonderful as were my shipmates. 

Occasionally ashore in Liverpool, we 

were out partying every night in the pubs 

and clubs of the Second City of Empire. 

The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the 

Merseybeat and Liverpool Football Club 

was kicking themselves into hearts around 

the world. 

I now depend on a pacemaker but I 

do make a little more money from book 

royalties on my memoirs than the £59,95p 

I then earned each month as a seaman. In

three months. 

Whatever career we chose in the swinging 

sixties we enjoyed immensely. Our 

generation was the fun-loving carefree 

mini-skirt age. 

We all knew the top 20 ballad 

titles in Jack Scott’s Top Twenty 

programme. Ours was a world 

of sharp suits, jukeboxes, Kenton 

haircuts for the boys, and we had 

more girlfriends than you could shake 

a stick at. We dined at the Chinese 

restaurants and we felt and looked 

like movie stars. My mate and I rented 

a lovely house overlooking a Birkenhead 

park for £5 per week. 

Jill Curzon, my good friend and famous 

actress has been the doyen of Marbella 

since the 1980s. Born into a comfy middleclass 

family in the Home Counties, Jill’s 

world was far different from ours yet was 

strangely the same. 

Jill and her budding Thespian friends 

were to become internationally famous. Far 

too many to name here, my friend’s peers 

epitomised The Swinging Sixties. 

We both agree that the generation born 

in Britain during or soon after World War 

II were the most fortunate generation in 

hundreds of years. Few women experienced 

back-breaking drudgery. Boys were not 

conscripted into the armed forces and there 

were no foreign battlefields for the young 

me to shed their blood on. 

This is why, despite my now advanced 

years, I feel desperately sorry for today’s 

generation. Harold Macmillan was right: 

‘We never had it so good.’

Samuel Plimsoll (1824–1898) 

was an English politician 

and social reformer 

best remembered for having 

created the Plimsoll line. This 

is a painted watermark on a 

ship’s hull indicating the ship’s 

maximum safe draught and 

prevents illegal overloading. 




The Saint who 

saved the Sailors 

Samuel Plimsoll was born in Bristol 

and spent part of his childhood in Sheffield 

and Penrith in Cumberland. Leaving school, 

he became a clerk at Rawson’s Brewery and 

rose to be a manager. 

In 1853, after a failed attempt at starting 

a coal delivery business, he was reduced to 

destitution. Through this experience, he learnt

to sympathise with the hard-pressed 

poor. When good fortune returned, 

he resolved to devote his time 

to improving the condition of 

England’s pitiable people. 

His efforts were directed 

especially against what 

was known as coffin ships: 

unseaworthy and overloaded 

vessels. The coffin ships were often 

heavily insured which served as an incentive 

for ship-owners to overload their company’s 

ships and put crews lives at risk. 

In 1867, Plimsoll was elected as Member 

of Parliament for Derby and endeavoured in 

vain to pass a bill dealing with the subject of a 

safe load line on ships. The main problem was 

the number of powerful ship-owning MPs in 

Parliament. 

In 1872, he published a work entitled 

Our Seamen, which became well known 

throughout the country. Accordingly, 

on Plimsoll’s motion in 1873, a Royal 

Commission was appointed, and in 1875 a 

government bill was introduced grudgingly 

accepted. 

On 22 July, Prime Minister, Benjamin 

Disraeli announced the bill would be 

dropped. Plimsoll lost his self-control, applied 

the term ‘villains’ to members of the House, 

and shook his fist in the Speaker’s face. 

Disraeli moved that he be reprimanded, but

on the suggestion of Lord Hartington agreed 

to adjourn the matter for a week to allow 

Plimsoll time for thought. 

Eventually, Plimsoll apologised. Many 

people, however, shared his view that the 

bill had been stifled by the pressure of the 

ship-owners. Popular feeling forced the 

Westminster regime to pass a bill which in 

the following year was amended into the 

Merchant Shipping Act. This gave stringent 

powers of inspection to the Board of Trade, 

and the mark that indicates the safe limit to 

which a ship may be loaded became generally 

known as Plimsoll’s mark or line. 

He was for some years the honorary 

president of the National Sailors’ and 

Firemen’s Union, and drew attention to the 

horrors of the cattle-ships, where animals 

were transported under appalling and overcrowded 

conditions. He died in Folkestone 

on 3 June 1898, and is buried in St Martin’s 

churchyard, Cheriton, Kent. 

Michael Walsh, author of Untold Sagas of 

the Sea (Amazon) says in Whitehall Garden 

there is a monument to Samuel Plimsoll. A 

monument bust of Plimsoll is also located 

in his native Bristol on the banks of Bristol 

Harbour in the Canons Marsh area. 

Writer Nicolette Jones published The 

Plimsoll Sensation getting the idea for it 

from living in 1995 in Plimsoll Road in 

Finsbury Park, north London knowing little 

about whom it was named after. Samuel 

Plimsoll appears in the third series of the BBC 

historical television drama The Onedin Line, 

portrayed by actor David Garfield.

STUDENT DAYS

Looking back over all those years, 

it’s not so much the lectures I 

remember nor even the social 

life, but the three summers I spent at 

Cleethorpes, packing peas for Eskimo 

Frozen Foods. One of our mates came 

from Grimsby and she had worked at 

Eskimo during her Sixth Form breaks. 

She said she could get us in there. And 

she did. 

Anne and I hitch-hiked from Walsall 

up to Cleethorpes each summer. We were 

provided with free accommodation and 

had to work shifts. 6 till 2. 2 till 10, 10 

till 6. Sometimes we did dislike shifts, 

particularly when it included the night 

shift. After all, we were there for the 

money and didn’t mind working hard. 

It was lovely coming off at 6.00 a.m. We 

would stroll along the seafront, watching 

the deep sea fishing trawlers from Hull, 

lining up along the horizon at the mouth 

of the Harbour, waiting for the tide. Our 

first summer, Anne and I stayed with a 

middle-aged couple who lived a very 

Spartan life. We had no “Street cred”

and were starving but learned enough 

to know that in our second summer we 

would ask to use cooking facilities and get 

our own meals. 

In the third summer, 6 of us shared 

the attic space of a large B and B on 

the sea front. We lived on £1 

per week – half a crown a 

day and the eighth one for 

other things. Pooling our 

half-crowns meant that 

we had 15 shillings for 

a slap up meal each 

day. A dozen eggs and 

large sliced loaf lasted 2 

days. There were tins of 

baked bins and spaghetti 

hoops, tined peaches, 

evaporated milk, and 

CAKE. We lived like Lords 

that third summer. 

One day when we went into 

work, the local girls were in a giggly 

state in the cloakroom, competing for the 

mirrors. “What’s going on”? we asked, as 

we got into our green overalls, wellington 

boots and turbans, “Don’t you know? Its 

Adam, he’s coming round the factory”. 

The most famous pop singer of the day – 

Adam Faith was appearing at the Winter 

Gardens that week and, apparently was 

going to visit us. 

There were 10 of us manning the 

nearside packing machine. We got a great 

kick being the fastest each day beating 

those manned by the local girls. But that 

morning, our mate Barbara had a run in 

with the Supervisor and was sacked. In 

the cloakroom she changed into “Civvies” 

and put on her make-up. Rather than 

go and clock off she decided to go to the 

Canteen and spend an hour or two on 

Company time. Being late morning, the 

Canteen was empty. Apart from one table 

where sat the 2 brothers who ran the 

Company. 

She soon attracted their attention. Late 

in the afternoon with 9 of us doing the 

job of 10 and concentrating hard, we 

noticed a change in the atmosphere and 

looked round. Coming into the factory 

and beginning to look along 

our packing line, a group of 

dignitaries – all in pristine 

white coats and hats. And 

in the centre of the group, 

a diminutive Adam 

Faith. Not that we gave 

him much attention as 

our eyes were riveted 

on the rear of the group, 

where our mate Barbara, 

dressed like the rest, was 

focusing all her attention 

on the youngish man who 

was explaining to her how 

the packing machine worked as 

they slowly passed along it. We had to 

stifle giggles, to the consternation of the 

Supervisor. 

On leaving work, again in the 

cloakroom, the local girls were gathered 

round, drooling over the photos of Adam 

Faith that he had left for them. “Just look 

at his signature. The ink is almost still 

wet”. “If you go through the office part 

and ask the girl at the reception, she’ll 

give you one”. We were told. 

Out of curiosity, Angela said “Come 

on, let’s go and see”. Sure enough, there 

was Barbara at the Reception desk. We all 

laughed. “Come for a photo, have you”? 

She asked, opening a drawer and pulling 

2 out. “Just a mo. I haven’t signed these” 

she said, picking up a pen, and with a 

flourish signed “Adam Faith” across the 

photo before handing these to us with a 

grin. “You can’t give out unsigned photos, 

can you?” she asked.

BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS 

As I write, the World is a 

troubled place, and it appears 

to be becoming daily more 

complicated and helpless. This World 

where we live, and each and every body 

we inhabit as a human being is being 

tried and tested to increasingly higher 

levels. Compliance with an inert level of 

new rulings and safety precautions have 

never ever had to be a part of our lives. 

Now it is both critical and essential to 

work together with ourselves to enable 

the safety and freedom hand in hand 

with protection, wellbeing and balance 

ourselves under the restrictions of 

controls that have been enforced upon 

us. 

Our anxiety levels have reached a new 

high. We can be brave for others and we 

can put on a brave face too; but many 

are living now with highly elevated 

levels of stress. The empty streets and 

the closed up businesses are testament to 

the unreal lives we are currently living. 

This is a Brave New World, and it is not 

a dystopian view of the future but sadly 

a reality of the here and now that has no 

immediately defined ending in sight. 

Hope is a welcome salve for the inner 

pain and the stored anger that we are 

building inside ourselves. If you are 

managing to live with hope in your 

heart then you are not merely blocking 

out the tedium and the loss of customary 

activities, you are opening up your 

heart to embrace the sincere comfort of 

living harmoniously with yourself. It 

is not ingratiating, nor is it unrealistic 

or difficult. Hope is a positive wish for 

change, and it sends out a very clear 

message that whatever comes along you 

can live with a missive that things will 

get better. Hope is enabling and positive. 

With it you send out a very personal 

message that shows others that you have 

belief, faith and that you have managed 

to manipulate the sorrows of the World 

with a firm maxim of living out of the 

dark tunnel and out there in the light. 

On the darkest day and the longest 

night, hope centres around the heart and 

is a form of inner prayer that releases 

endorphins of good feeling, tinged 

with positive vibrations; enough to reprogramme 

the body and remove any 

conflict that could affect the delicate 

balance that we can achieve. 

Spiritual people are more likely to 

achieve contentment, even in the most 

difficult of situations. Whilst we are, 

all of us, Spirit living in a body, this is 

constantly acknowledged and highly 

prized by all Spiritual people. Our 

connection to this continuity allows 

Spirit to bring us joy on all levels, and 

this generates a high level of love. In 

loving people we can just go for it; but 

we are also imbued with self love. This is 

the secret of true Spiritualism. We go in 

with love and light and try to illuminate

THE LAST PERSON GAOLED 

FOR WITCHCRAFT IN BRITAIN 

Helen Duncan 

was a Scottish 

medium who 

held spiritual séances 

during World War 

Two. During one of her 

November 1941 séances, 

she spoke to a sailor’s 

spirit. 

During the séance, he claimed to 

have lost his life as a consequence of 

his battleship, the HMS Barham being 

torpedoed. The great battleship that had so 

far survived a number of skirmishes and 

attacks, even a collision or two, was finally 

sent to the bottom of the Mediterranean 

Sea in November 1942 off the Egyptian 

coast when torpedoed by U-Boat 331. She 

took with her 862 officers and ratings. 

Because Britain was at war and morale was 

at stake very few knew of the calamity. 

Considered a threat to national security, 

the medium was immediately arrested, 

and sent to trial. Inevitably, there was an 

effort made to dismiss Helen Duncan as a 

fraudster. However, at her court case, she 

was denied her request to demonstrate her 

psychic powers. 

It was claimed by the court and media 

that the spiritualist had her HMS Barham 

sailor revelation in November 1941 after 

the news of its sinking, with the loss of 862 

officers and ratings were released. 

Michael Walsh, author of the Untold 

Sagas of the Sea series of Amazon-available 

books says, ‘This is not true. Only relatives 

of the dead and missing were informed 

of the disaster and only after many weeks 

after the battleship’s sinking. Relatives 

would not have been informed of the 

manner in which the ship had been sunk.’ 

Helen Duncan was the last person in 

Britain and likely outside of Africa to be 

found guilty of witchcraft. She was gaoled 

for nine months.

Do you feel that you have become 

almost invisible as to who you

subtly and may take a while. Then one 

day, you realize you don’t know who 

you are anymore. 

Here are 4 questions to ask yourself to 

check if you feel you have lost yourself.

. Do you say what you really 

mean? 

Are you communicating from your 

heart? Sometimes we can slip into a 

pattern of saying what is expected of us 

and what we say may not be what we 

really think or feel. If you see that you 

are not saying what you really think and 

feel, pay attention first of all to who you 

are trying to please by speaking as you 

do. Figure out what the costs are for not 

saying what you mean. Make a decision 

to change your approach and speak from 

your real self, the self you know you 

really are. To discover who you really 

are, you may need professional help to 

learn how to get back or move forward 

to who you really want to be.

want? 

If you are asked what you would 

prefer, do you make a choice? Or, do 

you ask what the other person would 

prefer and go along with that in every 

case? If you find that you give in to 

someone elses preference fairly regularly,

comes from not wanting the 

responsibility of having 

made the decision…. in 

case something goes

Spend some time remembering what 

makes you happy. Perhaps then you can 

plan something.

It is not possible to take care of everyone 

else first and still have time to take care 

of you. Loving yourself enough to take 

care of yourself is not selfish or foolish…. 

it is necessary to have enough self 

esteem to be able to deal effectively with 

everything else in life with your head 

held high. By taking care of yourself, I 

mean include things that bring meaning 

and fulfilment to you. By taking care 

of you, I mean giving yourself the 

opportunity and time to express your 

real self. 

Check to see if you like yourself 

underneath it all. A good way to avoid 

who you are is to be in continual service 

to everyone around you, and to be 

prepared to be dictated to by those with 

strong personalities. YOU should be 

in control of your own life…that way 

you can work towards everything that 

is good for you…..If that is what you 

want!!!.

The Removal of 

Lumps & Bumps! 

People decide to have lumps & 

bumps removed for different 

reasons. 

These days we are all very much 

aware of the importance of regular skin 

checks and being ‘on the lookout’ for 

any skin changes such as the appearance 

of ‘moles’, changes in moles etc. 

Many patients visit the doctor for 

a ‘mole check’. The G.P. will usually 

be able to advise if a mole, lump 

or bump appears to be harmless or 

potentially sinister. If the G.P. is in any 

doubt the patient will be referred to a 

dermatologist. 

Sometimes the G.P. will advise that a 

‘mole’ is harmless at present but should 

be closely observed for any changes that 

may indicate that the mole is becoming 

suspicious. Some patients rather than 

‘watch and wait’ prefer to have the 

offending mole removed right away. 

They think ‘get it over and done with!!’ 

Sometimes the G.P. will say a lesion 

is nothing at all to worry about but 

the patient will still want it removed.

This may be for cosmetic reasons or 

sometimes the lesion is in an awkward 

place and catches on things such as your 

bra strap, hairbrush or knicker leg!! 

If minor surgery (removal of 

lump or bump) goes ahead, the 

area will first be numbed with a 

local anaesthetic. This is the only 

uncomfortable part of the procedure (a 

scratch of a needle and slight stinging 

of the product). This only lasts for a 

few seconds. The doctor will wait for 

the local anaesthetic to take affect and 

will check that the area is indeed numb 

before proceeding. The actual surgery 

will not be felt at all. Once the lump is 

removed, the wound will be sutured 

(stitched). The doctor will take lots of 

care regarding the cosmetic result, using 

as fine a suture as possible. The patient 

will be advised as to when to return for 

removal of the sutures (a quick, painless 

procedure). 

If the doctor thinks the lump looks 

suspicious it will be sent to the 

laboratory for analysis. 

If anybody has any concerns about a 

blemish, lump or bump they should visit 

their Family Doctor for a professional 

opinion.

Hi Folks 

You missed my birthday February 23rd . ….I 

was 10 years of age Here’s A Happy 

Birthday to Bentley he was 

8 years old on the 8th April. 

I can remember him when 

he was a few weeks old 

arriving into the home. He 

is the smallest and he is 

the “boss”, even today. 

Yes I am again putting 

my paw to paper and 

enjoying every minute of 

it. “Tyson’s Fan Club” is still 

acceptable and my friends 

have given me the “Paws Up”. I 

am hoping my articles helps my furry 

friends to find a “Forever Home”. 

We are lucky to be so loved and spoilt. I 

often giggle to myself as when I take a brief 

walk into the garden and on my return, a 

few minutes later, the welcome I receive 

from Bentley and Alfie, as if I had been on a 

two week holiday. They jump up and down 

with excitement. Go to the toy box and rush 

back to show me what they have selected. 

Alfie has to be with me all the time so when 

I have my many “naps” the snores vibrate 

but it doesn’t bother him he lays with his 

head on me and constantly licking my face. 

With all these birthdays mine first, Bentley 

then Alfie’s our life is not yet back to normal 

as us boys have great fun enjoying our 

birthday treats, we all share and are real 

mates. I suppose they keep me young! 

I don’t see now my long legged, red head, 

I think she has moved house. I am at a time 

in my life that I do not seem that bothered 

about a girlfriend as I am quite lazy and 

Cassie is a female GSD. 9/10 years old. She is 

a happy confident girl ready to go to a home of

have a cooling mat, collar and coat helps

Bentley is a small dog he feels the heat but 

won’t go onto the cooling mat, he prefers 

the tiles. 

I have to say I am very lucky to be writing 

this article as I came in contact with a 

caterpillar and I was very, very poorly. So 

now, we are having the garden sprayed with 

liquid a Company called Fog Off is dealing 

with destroying the insects, caterpillars and 

this Asian Tiger mosquito is on its way. This 

also helps my family from suffering any 

bites as well.

DES O’CONNOR 

Desmond Bernard O’Connor, CBE 

(12 January 1932 – 14 November 

2020) was an English comedian, 

singer and television presenter. 

He was a long-time TV chat-show 

host, beginning with The Des O’Connor 

Show in 1963, which ran for ten years. He 

also presented game shows, including 

Take Your Pick from 1992 to 1999, and 

the long-running Channel 4 game 

show Countdown for two years 

between 2007 and 2008. 

O’Connor recorded 

36 albums and had 

four top-ten UK 

singles, including a 

number-one hit with 

“I Pretend”, with 

global sales of more 

than sixteen million 

records. Well known 

for his friendship with 

comedians Morecambe and 

Wise, his singing ability was 

often light-heartedly mocked on 

their show, with O’Connor taking part in 

the sketches. 

O’Connor was born in Stepney, East 

London, to Maude (née Bassett), a Jewish 

cleaner, and Harry O’Connor, an Irish 

dustman. He was raised in his mother’s 

faith and often joked that he was the 

first O’Connor to have a bar mitzvah. In 

his childhood, he had rickets and was 

badly injured in a car accident. He had 

a brother, William, and a sister, Patricia, 

one year his junior. He was evacuated to 

Northampton during the Second World 

War, where he worked in a shoe factory 

and was a schoolboy and reserves player 

with Northampton Town. 

After completing his national service 

in the Royal Air Force, he worked as a 

Redcoat at Butlin’s holiday camp in Filey, 

where he met his first wife Phyllis, and 

as a shoe salesman at Church’s 

in Northampton, and for 

United Counties, both on 

the road and in the office, 

before entering show 

business. Prior to his 

break on television, his 

first fully professional 

stage appearance 

in variety, was in a 

Newcastle theatre and 

later while he was in 

Leeds he invited the Welsh 

singer, Shirley Bassey out on 

two dates. In 1958, when Buddy 

Holly toured the UK, O’Connor was the 

show’s compere for which he was paid 

£100 per week. 

O’Connor appeared at the Glasgow 

Empire, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, the 

Opera House, Sydney, and the O’Keefe 

Centre, Toronto, and made more than one 

thousand solo appearances at the London 

Palladium.

Supersonic jets are booming back into style 

The First Step in Bringing Supersonic Travel Back to the World

The world’s only supersonic passenger 

plane could return to the skies. 

However in April 10, 2003 Air France 

and British Airways announced they would be 

retiring their fleet of Concorde aircraft. 

Air France made its final flight on June 27 

while British Airways retired its fleet on October 

24 after a farewell tour. 

Concorde had been in service for 27 years, 

having made its first commercial flight on 

January 21, 1976. 

The jet is expected to hit the skies for passenger 

air travel as soon as 2025, with flights on Boom’s 

XB-1 test model beginning in early 2021. The last 

supersonic jet, the Concorde, remains fixed in the 

public consciousness even 17 years after it was 

retired. Denver based start-up Boom Supersonic 

has announced it will roll out XB-1, a 1:3 scale 

prototype of its upcoming supersonic commercial 

jet Overture soon with test flights beginning in 

2021. 

The move will help to pave the way for the 

first commercial supersonic flights since the 

legendary delta-wing passenger airliner made its 

last flight in 2003. 

XB-1 is the first step in bringing supersonic 

travel back to the world and 

flights at twice the speed mean we can travel 

twice as far -- bringing more people, places, and 

cultures into our lives. 

The results of the XB-1 test programme, which 

claims to be 100% carbon neutral will allow the 

company to fine tune the design for supersonic 

airliner Overture. 

They are ensuring that the supersonic future 

is safe and environmentally and economically 

sustainable. 

If all goes to plan, Overture, which is designed 

to seat between 55 to 75 people, will begin 

passenger flights in 2030. It will focus on over 500 

primarily transoceanic routes that will benefit 

from the aircraft’s Mach-2.2 speeds -- such as 

New York to London, a journey that would take 

just three hours and 15 minutes. 

The aircraft has been designed with the latest 

noise-reducing technologies and will only fly at 

supersonic speeds while over oceans to ensure 

that populated areas are not affected by sonic 

booms. 

Boom isn’t the only company attempting to 

bring supersonic flights back. 

Aerion Corporation is currently developing 

a passenger AS2 supersonic jet, which can hold 

up to 12 passengers, at its headquarters in Reno, 

Nevada. 

“We had to design an aircraft that was 

incredibly efficient with the lowest fuel-burn 

possible, so we spent 10 years thinking about 

advanced aerodynamics and fuel-efficient 

engines. We’ve designed specifically around 

noise and emissions,” says Vice. 

One of the things it won’t have -- which 

Concorde had -- is afterburners, a system 

whereby fuel is sprayed into the engine’s exhaust 

and burned to increase thrust during takeoff and 

acceleration. 

“We ruled that out because it’s too noisy and 

puts too much emissions in the environment,” 

says Vice. “The second thing we thought about 

was our energy source. We wanted an aircraft 

that wasn’t dependent upon fossil fuels and that 

could operate on 100% synthetic fuels from day 

one.” 

Vice says that the AS2 is designed to meet 

Stage 5 Airplane Noise Standards, the most 

stringent landing and takeoff noise regulations. 

“Our aircraft is going to be as quiet as other 

airplanes around airports.” Says Vice. 

But perhaps one of the AS2’s most innovative 

features is its “boomless cruise” which allows the 

plane to fly supersonically over land without the 

boom striking the ground. Instead, the noise gets 

refracted back up into the atmosphere. 

Vice is keen to prove the new technology can


work and “once regulators see that we can do 

that reliably, we’ll have the first aircraft in history 

that can fly supersonic over land, and nobody on 

the ground will hear the boom.” 

“We analyzed how business owners fly. We 

looked at a company out of New York that flew 

business jets around the world, and when we 

substitute an AS2 for them and rerun those flights 

for every person who flew on their airplane, AS2 

saved them 142 hours a year,” says Vice. 

Beyond the AS2’s first commercial flights in 

2026, Aerion is doing some family planning; an 

AS3 airliner is in the pipeline. Future plans also 

include hybrid-electric supersonic planes, and in 

the much longer term, a fully electric supersonic 

aircraft, the ASX, is envisaged. 

A seat on Concorde cost around four times 

the cost of a business class seat -- but Concorde 

wasn’t a business jet. 

How deep into their pockets might a busy 

executive go in order to zip faster through the 

stratosphere on a supersonic charter flight? 

Rather than speculate, a leading broker of 

on-demand business jet travel has identified 

a correlation between offering extra speed 

and willingness to pay more, based on their 

customers’ propensity to specify faster and 

costlier jet planes when they’re making a 

booking. 

“We know our clients will pay more to arrive 

thirty minutes faster on a four-hour sector. 

What’s important to private jet customers is 

speed,” says Adam Twidell, CEO and founder of 

PrivateFly, a global booking service for private 

charter flights. 

“I think private jet customers will pay twice as 

much for twice the speed,” he says, “but they’ll 

also want the badge of honour that they’ve 

flown supersonic. This what happened on the 

Concorde.” 

Hermeus hypersonic jet aims to fly New York 

to London in 90 minutes 

Targeting airlines 

But the kudos of flying supersonic won’t just 

be confined to the prestigious end of the charter 

market. 

The aircraft, designed to cruise at Mach 2.2 

(1,451 mph), has a price tag of $200 million, and 

has already garnered $6 billion worth of preorders 

for 10 Overtures from Virgin Group and 

20 from Japan Airlines. Japan’s national airline 

also invested $10 million in Boom in 2017. 

Overture is moving through the design phase, 

where its key technologies and specifications are 

being developed and refined. 

“Many of the key components have already 

undergone several successful tests, including 

testing the engines with sustainable alternative 

fuels. Overture will begin flight testing in the 

mid-2020s. We’ve already executed successful 

engine tests using pure biofuel and are designing 

our aircraft to accommodate alternative fuels”. 

Overture flights will focus on more than 500 

primarily transoceanic routes that benefit from 

the aircraft’s Mach-2.2 speeds -- such as New 

York to London or San Francisco to Tokyo. 

“On Overture, same-day transatlantic business 

trips become possible,” says Scholl. “Imagine 

flying to London in the morning, meeting with 

business partners during the day, and returning 

to the US in time to tuck your children into bed.” 

“Carriers operating Boom’s airliner will be able 

to offer profitably fares similar to the businessclass, 

long-haul ticket prices seen today,” claims 

the Boom CEO. “For a one-way trip from New 

York to London, this means that the airliner can 

turn a profit at fare levels around $2,500. Our 

ultimate vision is to reduce operating costs to 

make supersonic flight even more affordable and 

accessible.” 

Overture launch customer Japan Airlines’ 

senior management is now working closely 

together with the manufacturer to shape the 

Overture’s inflight experience and plan suitable 

routes. 

Why was Concorde retired? Air France and 

British Airways blamed low passenger numbers 

and rising maintenance costs. Passenger numbers 

fell after an Air France Concorde crashed minutes 

after taking off from Paris in July 2000, killing all 

109 people on board and four on the ground.
