Transport Depot<br />
North West Museum of Road Transport<br />
This red-brick building started life as home to the town’s<br />
horse-drawn trams in 1881; the first horse tram service<br />
began on 5th November that year.<br />
It continued in use for public transport purposes, housing<br />
steam and electric<br />
trams, trolleybuses and<br />
motor buses, with The<br />
<strong>St</strong> <strong>Helens</strong> & District<br />
Tramway Corporation<br />
running steam trams<br />
from 1889. They were<br />
replaced by electric<br />
trams a decade later and<br />
the first ever motorbus<br />
was stored here from<br />
1921; with trolleybuses<br />
running from 1927.<br />
decker buses were introduced in the early 1980s.<br />
The museum society was able to obtain a lease on the<br />
premises, which remained in the ownership of <strong>St</strong> <strong>Helens</strong><br />
Council, and moved into building in 1986. In 1994 the<br />
