Defying 

the odds 

We capped off 2019 with an extraordinary 

year of centenary celebrations and 

launched our DARE Campaign at the Gala 

Dinner. We were optimistic, confident 

and excited about the future. Then came 

2020 - not the year any of us could have 

imagined, due to multiple adversities, but 

Scotch is a supportive and compassionate 

community. 

If 2019 showcased the strength of our community 

through celebration, then 2020 has showcased 

our resilience and foresight. Our teachers pivoted 

to an online delivery model to ensure continuity of 

your children’s education. We kept our boarding 

house open and embraced those prevented from 

going home by border closures, particularly those 

with families overseas. Our community rallied, and 

even though we were the first independent school 

in South Australia forced to close, our robust 

response has distinguished us amongst our peers 

across the country! 

Of course, it hasn’t been perfect. Online learning 

is different, and closures are difficult, particularly 

for younger students and those who flourish 

with teachers and friends close by. However, we 

rallied, collaborated, communicated, ‘zoomed’ and 

adjusted to every curve ball that came our way. 

Thank you for your support, understanding and 

partnership, which ironically has helped Scotch 

enter 2021 in in one of the strongest positions we 

have ever found ourselves! 

Scotch continues to provide exceptional 

education – Our sporting teams are competing 

well, our musicals are the talk of the town, our 

academic results are amongst the highest in the 

state and our students are successful in a wide 

range of disciplines and interests. 

Wellbeing is now mainstream - The school 

successfully demonstrated the importance of 

wellbeing and our ability to respond to multiple 

critical incidents last year, while COVID has brought 

a lot of focus on wellbeing. Frontline workers and 

educators are heroes and remote learning has 

resulted in parents being far more engaged in their 

children’s learning. 

The College is in a great position – Our enrolments 

have never been higher (waiting lists at several 

year levels), our finances are in great shape, 

our leadership is strong and stable, and we are 

delivering ambitious results on and off campus. 

It is from this position of strength that we 

commenced the construction of our new Wellbeing 

and Sports Centre (WSC), a flexible learning 

facility that will enhance our wellbeing programs 

for all year groups, setting a new benchmark for 

education in Australia. Located adjacent to the 

revitalised Agricultural Sciences Precinct, and 

easily accessible to our Junior School students, 

this new facility will support all six pillars of our 

Live Well program, and also include new indoor 

courts, gymnasium and swimming pools, all while 

showcasing one of the best views of Adelaide! 

The WSC is our Centenary project, and also 

the first major project from our Infrastructure 

Masterplan which is aimed at rejuvenating both 

campuses over the next 20-30 years. Construction 

has begun and the facility is expected to be 

completed in early 2022. 

The building has been designed around an 

ambitious vision, a contemporary and relevant 

program and made possible thanks to the 

donations of a large number of community 

members. 

I am excited to announce that we are in the final 

stretch of that promises to be a successful DARE 

Centenary Campaign. 

With only a year to go and approximately $2.5M 

to raise we are at 85% of our goal for the Building 

Fund. 

Our eventual success is not going to be measured 

by the dollars we raise or how fast we get there, it 

will be measured by how sustainable this culture of 

philanthropy at Scotch will be. At Scotch, we are 

focused on more than raising funds to support a 

particular program – we are embedding a culture 

of philanthropy to support our bold ambitions 

today and into the future.

Service 

Learning during 

the COVID-19 

pandemic 

Philanthropy is inherently connecting to 

the love of humanity, and at Scotch we 

believe that philanthropy ‘through’ Scotch 

makes a huge difference to the nonprofits 

we partner with. The year of the pandemic 

really challenged what was possible, and in 

true Scotch fashion, we approached 

our students. 

During term 1 2020, a middle school student focus 

group, were tasked with co-designing Service 

Learning activities for Scotchies, in response to 

COVID-19. Service Learning is an integral part of 

Scotch College Adelaide. Learning through Service 

provides a values-based and holistic experience for 

students. Students engage in action that addresses 

an authentic community need in a process that 

allows for student agency and provides structured 

time for reflection. 

Students are global citizens, powerful agents of 

change and the next generation of caregivers, 

scientists, and doctors. Any crisis presents the 

opportunity to help students learn, cultivate 

compassion and increase resilience while building 

a safer and more caring community (UNICEF, 2020). 

At Scotch College Adelaide, we continue to equip 

our students with information and facts about 

COVID-19 which helps diminish their fears and 

anxieties around the disease and supports their 

ability to cope with any secondary impacts in 

their lives. It is however also important to give 

students a sense of being in control. Giving our 

students meaningful ways, through service learning, 

to help others will help them and others. 

The first activity of the student focus group 

entailed brainstorming ideas to enable connection 

within community during COVID-19. 

The next step entailed developing Service Learning 

activities for the three sub-schools – Junior, Middle 

and Senior school. These opportunities were 

eagerly taken up by the students. 

For example, our Junior School Students made 

positive affirmation cards for those experiencing 

social isolation. The cards were distributed through 

community-based organisations such as Rotary 

clubs and the Salvation Army. The cards were well 

received throughout the community and numerous 

recipients sent Thank you cards back to 

the students. 

Several groups of students adapted the ‘social 

connecting’ activity to Electronic Service Learning. 

The students sent messages of hope to the socially 

isolated in our community. E-Service Learning 

holds massive potential to transform both Service 

Learning and online learning by freeing Service 

Learning from geographical constraints and by 

equipping online learning with a powerful and 

much-needed tool to promote engagement. 

With supplies of hand sanitiser running low, year 

8 science students mixed hand sanitiser. Students 

were able to apply their scientific knowledge to 

meet an immediate need and serve the community 

by supplying hand sanitiser to a local charity - 

the Hutt Street Centre for clients experiencing 

homelessness. The hand sanitiser was included in 

wellbeing packs for the clients. 

The student focus group were keen to meet 

some local need resulting from the pandemic but 

were also interested in service not related to the 

pandemic. For this reason, we tailored additional 

service activities to each of the sub-schools. 

These service suggestions were advertised on both 

campuses, through email to middle and senior 

students as well as displayed on the edu-portal for 

those remote learning. 

In previous Philanthropy Impact Reports, we always 

reported on the monies we raised for various 

charities. This year, we have decided to focus 

on impact. 

The coronavirus disease has created a global 

crisis that has had a deep impact on the way we 

perceive our world and our everyday lives. Having 

a growth mindset while acting locally - through 

service, has however empowered our students and 

community. We’re all in this together and will come 

out stronger!

Annual Appeal: 

It Takes Two! 

The Annual Appeal is about making a 

difference together, and in 2020 our 

community certainly rose to the challenge! 

We are grateful for each and every one of our Old 

Collegians, parents, grandparents, friends, staff and 

students’ donors who donated to the college 

this year. 

In 2020 donors had the option to give to our 

Scholarship or Building Fund to continue the 

important growth of the College, and to the 2020 

Covid-19 Bursary Fund to help those Scotch 

families struggling, through no fault of their own, 

to pay fees. 

Many members of the community stepped forward 

to help and supplement funds the college had 

already set aside to help families remain part of 

our community. Their meaningful support helped 

us provide fixed short-term assistance to those 

in our community who needed it most during the 

COVID-19 pandemic. Funds were allocated on a 

means tested basis and provided economic relief 

for families to keep their children at Scotch.

Thank you to everyone who has supported DARE: The Centenary Campaign to date. Your generosity has 

demonstrated loyalty, leadership and courage, as well as a deep desire to help Scotch College transform 

itself for its second century. With your help, we finished 2020 well over two thirds of the way to reach our 

DARE Centenary Campaign goal of $10 million, with $7 million of the funds going toward the WSC and the 

other $3 million helping with the long-term financial sustainability of scholarships.

The COVID-19 crisis impacted Scotch and our 

community, and therefore our DARE Campaign. 

We delayed key milestones around demolition and 

construction. However, this allowed us to get more 

competitive quotes from builders keen to work 

with us as well as some of the most favourable 

interest rates in town, saving us more than $1M 

from our modelling.

Giving Societies 

The Scotch which we know and love, 

would not be what it is today without the 

involvement of passionate and committed 

supporters, who have loyally donated 

either in their lifetime or through a 

bequest. 

“As a “lifer” who went through Scotch from reception to year 12, the College 

was an integral part of my childhood and teenage years. The College gave me 

the knowledge and skills to be successful and prepared me for life beyond the 

school yard. I made lifelong friendships at Scotch and it was a huge part of my 

life growing up. Education is a core value of mine and I felt I owed a great deal 

to Scotch so I wanted to give something back. When I wrote up my Will a few 

years ago, I decided to leave a gift of some shares to Scotch. Although I hope to 

live for many years to come, it gave me piece of mind to document the things 

I care about in my Will just in case something did ever happen. I will always be 

a Scotchie and I am proud to support Scotch in this meaningful way. If Scotch

Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Scotch’s success, providing the means by 

which the College can carry out its mission of educating young women and men 

in service to others. In recognition of this important commitment, the Webb 

Society honours and celebrates sustained giving to the College for 15 years or

Growing 

Future Farmers 

Thanks to your generosity, our 

Agricultural facilities grew from a shed 

to a magnificent new building: the Future 

Farm Skills Centre, which opened in mid 

2020 and is already making a tangible 

difference to our students across 

both campuses. 

The Future Farm Skills Centre which boasts 

environmentally sustainable design, water 

harvesting and lots of natural lighting, is where 

our students have the capacity to enhance or 

embrace the farm to fork experience including 

food preparation, as well as learn about wine 

making and technologies associated with smarter 

farming, precision farming, drones and automated 

farming systems.
