Duke of Edinburgh
hilip of Edinburgh (born Philip of Greece and Denmark;
in Corfu, June 10, 1921-Windsor, April 9,
2021) was for more than six decades the consort of
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Son of Prince
Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of
Battenberg, he was a member of the Greek royal house
by birth and the British by marriage.

Dinamarca; en Corfú, el 10 de junio de 1921-

in Corfu, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. His father
was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, the fourth
son of King George I of Greece and Grand Duchess Olga of
Russia (Olga Konstantínova Románova) granddaughter of
Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. His mother was Princess Alice of
Battenberg, eldest daughter of Prince Louis of Battenberg,
Marquis of Milford Haven and his wife, Princess Victoria of
Hesse-Darmstadt, eldest daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV
of Hesse-Darmstadt and his first wife , Princess Alice of the
United Kingdom (daughter of Queen Victoria of the United
Kingdom) and sister of the last Tsarina of Russia Alejandra
Fiódorovna Románova.

hen Felipe was seven years old, his family moved
to the UK. He was educated in England and Germany.
Advised by his uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, he applied
for British nationality and adopted his maternal surname
(Battenberg - in German, it means "mountain (of)
Batten" - but translated into English, Mountbatten) to serve
in the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, where he
reached the rank of lieutenant, and thus ascend on his way
to a noble marriage.

elipe received his early education at an American
school in Paris run by Donald MacJannet, who described
him as "an intelligent person, and always remarkably
courteous." In 1928, he was sent to the UK to attend
Cheam School. He lived with his maternal grandmother,
Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt, in Kensington Palace; and
with his uncle, George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquis of Milford
Haven, at Lynden Manor in Bray, Berkshire. In the next
three years, his four sisters married German nobles and
moved to Germany, his mother was committed to a mental
hospital after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, and his
father moved into a small apartment in Monte Carlo.

his class. During World War II, he continued to serve

n November 20, 1947, Felipe married the heir to
the British throne, Princess Elizabeth. To marry the
heir to the throne, Philip had to renounce his religion (the
Greek Orthodox) and his loyalty to Greece. For this
reason, he lost his title of "prince of Greece and Denmark".
To solve this, on his wedding day, the one who
was to become his father-in-law, King George VI, granted
him the treatment of His Royal Highness and made him

n 1952, Elizabeth ascended to the throne and in 1957
granted him the title of "prince of the United Kingdom", and
further determined that Philip would be the first knight in precedence
of the United Kingdom. Elizabeth's accession to the
throne raised the issue of the possible name change from the
House of Windsor to Mountbatten; However, Queen Mary,
upon learning of the proposal, contacted Prime Minister Winston
Churchill, who urged the Queen to keep the name of the
royal house.
n 1952, Isabel ascendió al trono y en 1957 le

Friday, December 23, 2011 in the afternoon
of emergency, after feeling pain in
his chest, and had to undergo an angioplasty
at night to unblock a coronary artery. The surgical
intervention was a success.

VII Hospital, in Marylebone, as a preventive
measure for suffering an infection, so he could not attend
the opening of the British Parliament and was replaced by

2019.

n February 16, 2021, the Duke of Edinburgh was
again admitted to the same hospital as a precaution,
after assuring that "he felt bad." It was confirmed that he
was suffering from an unspecified infection, and he was later
transferred to the San Bartolomé hospital. After undergoing
heart surgery at this health center, he returned to the
Rey Eduardo VII Hospital. On March 16, 2021, he was
discharged.

nuevamente internado en el mismo hospital por
precaución, tras asegurar que «se sentía mal». Se confirmó
que padecía una infección no especificada, y posteriormente

Tras ser intervenido quirúrgicamente del corazón en este
centro sanitario, regresó al hospital Rey Eduardo VII.
El 16 de marzo de 2021 se le dio el alta médica.

Funeral” - something that is generally reserved for Monarchs.

uring the Service, a small choir of four sang pieces
of music chosen by The Duke of Edinburgh. The
choir was located in the Nave, away from the seated congregation,
and in line with public health guidelines there
was no congregational singing.
The Funeral Service was conducted by the Dean of Windsor,
and lasted for approximately 50 minutes.
