Advanced Course on
A Perspective into Indian Codes of Practice for Reinforced
and Pre-Stressed Concrete Structures (InCoRP-2019)
An advanced Course on A Perspective into Indian Codes of Practice
for Reinforced and Pre-Stressed Concrete Structures will be
conducted by the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre
(CSIR-SERC), Chennai, during 18-20 September 2019.
Background
Concrete structures have been major structural materials for over a
century, and are still the most popular material for public structures
all over the world. Design methods for reinforced and prestressed
concrete structures have been revised a number of times in response
to the progress of materials and the changes in social conditions. The
codes have been evolved from the collective wisdom of expert
structural engineers gained over the years. Indian Standard provides
the guidance of civil engineers, designers and architects associated
with the planning and design of structures. The need to modify codes
arises from factors like unprecedented growth of knowledge,
developments in design philosophy, and rapid advances in
construction technology. The revision of IS codes was taken up with
a view to keeping abreast with the rapid development in the field of
concrete technology and to bring in further modification/improvement
in the light of experience gained while using the earlier versions. The
appropriate knowledge and suitable application of the codal
provisions ensure the safer, resilient, and durable structure.
CSIR–SERC (Structural Engineering Research Centre), Chennai,
Tamilnadu, India is a constituent Laboratory of CSIR (under Ministry
of Science and Technology) devoted to R & D activities in the areas
of Structural Engineering / Civil Engineering and related subjects. The
research group at Special and Multifunctional Structures Laboratory
(SMSL) of CSIR-SERC has unique capability in interdisciplinary
research domain of analysis, design and performance evaluation of
various types of structures contributing to engineering sciences and
engineering technology. The research is focusing on diverse
analytical, numerical and experimental research in mechanics of
material at atomistic level to performance evaluation at macro
structural level that will enable to develop materials linking response
at different scales using Process-Structure-Property-Performance
characteristics. The course is aimed at disseminating the knowledge
acquired by the research group at CSIR-SERC over the years of
research in the area of implementation of various codes of practice
for analysis, design, performance evaluation and life enhancement of
concrete structures. The course includes the theoretical background
along with practical application and laboratory demonstrations.
Objectives
The aim of this Course is to provide an opportunity for consultants
and practicing engineers belonging to the public and private sector
institutions, academicians, researchers, students and other
engineering professionals to familiarize themselves with the recent
developments and the technical perspective of the provisions of
Indian Standards for the analysis and design of reinforced and
prestressed concrete structures subjected to different type of
loadings.
Course Contents
The broad topics covered are :
Design of concrete mixes
Design loads and safety factors
Design provisions for plain and reinforced concrete
