Cardinals’ Thompson
Receives Post-Season Award
Garner-Hayfield junior Josh
Thompson has added another
football award to his resume.
The Cardinal receiver completed
an amazing year, finishing with
virtually every pass reception mark
in the record book for a single
season. Cardinal football coach
Cam Smith recently learned that
Thompson has been nominated as
an Old Spice Red Zone Player of
the Year.
As a result of this achievement,
Josh is among a select group
of players who are eligible to
be selected as a national Red
Zone Player of the Year and be
honored in a full-page feature in a
national print publication. For the
ninth straight year, Old Spice is
recognizing high school football
players who go above and beyond
the call of duty, particularly in the
Red Zone. The program honors
athletes who are able to elevate
their play and step up when the
heat is really on. These athletes
embody leadership, performance
and desire, and serve as examples
to their teammates on and off the
field.
Thompson now becomes eligible
to be named one of 50 National
Players of the Year. The top 50
players nationwide will be named
Red Zone Players of the Year and
will receive a plaque and other
awards.
Josh is expected to continue
G-H Cheerleaders Perform
On Iowa Honor Squad
Two Garner-Hayfield senior
cheerleaders performed as members
of the Iowa Honor Squad. Hilliary
Hayes and Amber Sankey, along
with 250 other cheerleaders from
across the state, performed a routine
at half-time of the Iowa Football
Championship on Saturday, Nov.
21.
The routine was choreographed
by Robin Clark of Cedar Falls, and
incorporated stunting, tumbling,
dancing, and cheering. This
performance was sponsored by
the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches
Association, and it was the first year
that Garner-Hayfield cheerleaders
have been a part of the squad. The
girls attended an all-day practice at
Ames High School on Sunday, Nov.
15 where they learned the five minute
routine. They practiced again at UNI
on Friday, Nov. 20 in preparation for
the performances on the 21 st .
Garner Wrestlers Gain Three Wins
Garner-Hayfield wrestlers finished 3 – 2 in dual
meet action while competing in their toughest
week of the season. The Cardinals opened the
week with a double dual at Newman on Tuesday
followed by Thursday’s Quadrangular at Nashua.
G-H then finished the week at the Sumner-
Fredericksburg tournament.
G-H opened the week with a 35 – 34 win over
Fort Dodge St. Edmond at Newman. The Cards
trailed 18-0 after three matches but battled back
with a forfeit, two pins and a decision. The match
stayed close for the remaining weights and ended
in a 34 -34 tie when all was over. The Cardinals
were awarded a point on criteria (most match
wins) to pick up the dual victory.
Stuart Blank, Levi Paulsen and Brad Young all
added pins to their individual records at 130, 135
and 152 pounds. Richie Kozisek added a decision
to the score at 119 pounds, as did Dakota Schuver
at 145 pounds and Jordan Paulsen at 171.
Newman proved to be too strong for the
Cardinals in Tuesday’s second dual of the night
as they came away with a 41- 30 win. The Cards
scored on four pins and a forfeit in what proved
to be a long night of wrestling. Stuart Blank and
Brad Young scored their second falls of the night
while Rick Young and Kenny Bell gained pins at
140 and 285 pounds.
Cardinal coach Jeff Short commented, “This
turned out to be a very late night for us. There
weren’t many quick matches in the three duals
and we found ourselves putting in a very long day.
Overall we wrestled pretty well.”
Nashua-Plainfield is one of the strongest
wrestling teams in the area and the Huskies came
dangerously close to shutting out the Cards on
Thursday. Nashua won all but one of the matches
on their way to a 75 – 6 win over the Cardinals.
Levi Paulsen’s pin at 135 pounds near the end of
the dual put Garner on the scoreboard.
G-H recovered with a 42 – 35 win over Turkey
Valley. The Cardinals scored 30 points on five
forfeits and added a pair of pins to the total to
insure the win. Brad Young recorded a secondperiod
pin at 152 pounds and Stuart Blank scored
a fall at 130 pounds.
Garner-Hayfield finished the night with another
close dual as the Cards defeated Valley of Elgin
42-40. Three Cardinal forfeits in this dual kept
the score close but G-H was able to pull away
with five pins. Aaron Babcock added a pin to his
record with a first period fall at 112 pounds. Drew
Henely and Stuart Blank added pins at 125 and 130
Drs. Tesene, Maurer & Maurer
pounds while Levi Paulsen scored an 18-second
pin at 135 pounds. Brad Young completed the list
of Cardinal winners with a fall at 152 pounds.
“I was real pleased with how things went
especially after the very late night on Tuesday,”
noted Short. “ I was afraid we might still be a little
tired but the guys performed well.”
Garner-Hayfield’s week concluded with a
four team round-robin tournament at Sumner on
Saturday. The Cards finished the day with three
individual champions and a runner-up.
Zach Schuver had a good day for the Cards,
scoring two falls and a decision to win the 130pound
weight class. Levi Paulsen added two
pins to his record on the way to the 135-pound
title while Jordan Paulsen scored two falls and a
decision at 171 pounds. Dakota Schuver earned a
pin and a decision to place second at 145 pounds
while Rick Young and Brad Young earned falls
with a third-place finish at 140 and 152 pounds.
“I like the opportunity to have the guys see
some different wrestlers at this tournament,”
remarked Short. “Overall it was a good day for us
and hopefully this kind of competition will help
prepare us for the upcoming tournaments.”
The Cardinals will have a fairly light week of
action ahead, traveling to Lake Mills on Thursday
for a triangular.
Cardinal Boys Win Three Straight
After looking sluggish against
two Class 3A opponents last week,
the Garner-Hayfield boys responded
with three impressive victories this
week. The Cards added two North
Iowa Conference wins to their
record on Thursday and Friday and
then handled Clear Lake in nonconference
action on Saturday.
G-H traveled to Buffalo Center
on Thursday to play a previously
postponed game with the Bison.
The first quarter of the game was
very competitive with the Cardinals
edging ahead 11 – 9. A strong
defensive effort by Garner in the
second period allowed the Cards
to extend their lead to 27 – 15 at
the half. An offensive explosion by
the Cardinals put the game out of
reach as G-H pulled ahead 47 – 24
heading into the fourth quarter.
North Iowa closed the gap some in
the final period, but when all was
over Garner-Hayfield finished with a
57 – 42 win.
Jace Engstler poured in 23 points
to lead Garner on the offensive
end of the floor. Josh Thompson
followed with 15 points including
five defensive rebounds and seven
offensive boards. A.J. Haag and Alex Bruggeman
added seven points apiece to the total while Nick
Svare added a three-pointer and Zach Greiman
scored two.
Cardinal coach Joe Albertson commented,
“Neither team came out on fire in the first quarter,
but some very important ground work was done
early. First, our intensity level was much higher
than it had been in the past week. That credit goes
to our JV team. Cody Roberts, Tyler Clay, Michael
Boehnke, Tim Molencamp, Jared Clay, Blake
Risius, Joe Ermer, and Damon Quandt pushed the
varsity players during practice and cheered the
team on with each big play. That kind of support
gave us an edge we needed. Second, the team took
the ball strong to the hole and got some of the key
North Iowa players in foul trouble and opened up
some perimeter shots. A key moment in the game
came late in the first half, when we were able to
get a break away lay-up just before the buzzer
sounded. This gave us a double-digit lead and the
momentum going into the second half. It was a
very important win for our team.”
An amazing offensive display in the first quarter
of Friday night’s game with Belmond saw the
Cardinals soar to a 23 – 12 lead after one quarter
After a series of narrow losses before Christmas,
the Garner-Hayfield girls’ basketball team is now
on a winning streak. The Cards began their streak
at St. Ansgar on January 9 and added a pair of
consecutive victories to their record this week.
G-H traveled to Buffalo Center on Thursday to
make up a snowed-out game from the previous
week. The North Iowa gym is typically a tough
place for the Cards but the Garner girls had
little difficulty in this game. Both teams scored
nine points in the first quarter but G-H pulled
ahead 22 – 17 by halftime. Garner-Hayfield then
essentially put the game away in the third quarter
by expanding their lead to 41 – 22. The Cardinals
were able to maintain their advantage through the
final period, connecting on 12 of 23 free throws in
the quarter to help seal the win.
Alicia Savoy had a big night offensively,
connecting on nine of 16 field goals on the way
to scoring 19 points. Lauren Opp followed with
10 points and five assists while Jasmine Doble
and Libby Kropp chipped in seven points each.
Kristin Stromer and Anna Pinneke scored five
and four points with Jenna Wellik completing the
scoring with a free throw.
Cardinal coach Jim Haag commented, “We got
off to a very good start in this game and it was
indicative of how our night was going to go. We
jumped out 7-0 and really built some confidence
from there. We also came out in the beginning of
the third quarter and went on a 12-3 run to take
control of this game. I thought we put together
a very good game plan and the girls executed it
very well. We knew that North Iowa is a very
well coached team, and we needed to be able to
counter and adjust to whatever they threw at us.
From a defensive standpoint, we did a very nice
job of taking away their strengths and keeping
them off balance so as not to let them get into
any rhythm or flow offensively. And from man
offenses standpoint, I thought that we were very
effective and efficient in our sets and did a nice job
of taking what the defense gave us. Traditionally,
North Iowa is a very difficult place for us to win.
We have not had a lot of success there. Therefore,
this is a big win against a quality team on their
home floor!”
Haag credited a number of individuals in the
win, complimenting Anna Pinneke for a great
defensive game and Libby Kropp for providing
a nice boost off of the bench. Other keys to the
win were Alicia Savoy’s ability to attack North
Iowa’s big post player, Lauren Opp’s effort at the
free throw line in the fourth quarter and Jasmine
Doble’s leadership on the defensive end of the
floor.
of play. The offense continued to roll in the second
quarter as Garner essentially put the game away in
the first half, leading 44 – 22 by intermission. G-H
then shifted to cruise control in the third quarter
while still managing to extend their lead to 58 – 34
at the end of three quarters. Reserves saw action
in the fourth and the game ended with a 70 – 50
Garner-Hayfield win.
Alex Bruggeman was near perfect from the field,
converting on 10 of 13 field goals and two of two
free throws to finish with 22 points. Josh Thompson
owned the boards, grabbing a dozen rebounds with
10 points while Ben Lau connected for 10 points.
Jace Engstler was credited with eight assists to go
with nine points followed by Nick Svare and Zach
Greiman with six points each. A.J. Haag and Tim
Molencamp completed the scoring with five and
two points.
“We didn’t show a bit of soreness after playing
the night before as the offense played one of their
better halves of the season,” remarked Albertson.
“The team did a great job finding our interior
players in both halves. The inside-out game was
working early as Josh Thompson and Brug found
points inside, AJ Haag, Ben Lau, Jace Engstler, and
Nick Svare hit from the arc. We built a nice 22-point
half time lead and never let it get under 20 the rest
G-H improved to
2 – 5 in North Iowa
Conference play with a
home court victory over
Belmond on Friday.
The Cardinals came
out sizzling, scoring
three three-pointers
and a field goal on their
first four possessions.
The exceptional start
propelled G-H to a 17-
12 first quarter lead.
Belmond then rallied
in the second period
to take a 29 – 28 lead
at halftime. G-H had
a repeat performance
of the first quarter to
regain the lead at 46 –
41 heading into the final
period. Garner’s offense
then rolled through the
fourth quarter on the
way to a 67 – 53 win.
A season-low nine
turnovers combined
with 48% shooting
from the field, 46%
shooting from the arc
and 82% shooting from
the free throw line
provided the fuel for
the Cards to produce a
season-high 67 points.
Belmond did manage
to out-rebound Garner,
but that advantage was
negated by the Bronco’s
18 turnovers and failure
to convert from the
three-point line.
Jasmine Doble finished the night with 19 points
resulting from a four-of-seven effort from the arc
along with seven assists to lead Garner in the win.
Kristin Stromer had her best effort of the season,
finishing the night with a dozen points on six of 10
field goals while Anna Pinneke added 10 points
and five rebounds. Jenna Wellik, Alicia Savoy and
Lauren Opp chipped in eight points apiece and
Libby Kropp added two points to the scoreboard.
“Coming off a big win against North Iowa, I
was a little concerned how we would respond
playing back to back nights,” remarked Haag.
“Once again, we got off to a very good start in
the first quarter knocking down some early three
of the night. t was good overall night
for the team, but we will have to do
a better job or guarding the perimeter
the next time we face Belmond.”
The Cardinals jumped out to an
11 – 0 lead on their way to a 20 – 10
first quarter advantage in Saturday’s
non-conference game against
Clear Lake. The Lions chipped into
Garner’s lead in the second period
but the Cardinals still managed to
hold a 33 – 26 halftime lead. Garner
then used a combination of inside
scoring with perimeter shooting to
extend their advantage to 50 – 39
going into the final quarter. When
the final buzzer sounded, G-H had
maintained their lead for a 60 – 49
decision.
Josh Thompson led Garner
offensively with 16 points followed by
Alex Bruggeman with 14. Thompson
was also credited with six rebounds
and five assists and Bruggeman
grabbed nine boards. Jace Engstler
hit four three-pointers on his way to
scoring 14 points with seven assists
and A.J. Haag connected on three
from behind the arc to finish with
nine points. Zach Greiman and Ben
Lau completed the scoring total for
the Cards with four and three points respectively.
“Once again, the coaches were worried about
tired legs as we were playing for the third night in
a row,” noted Albertson, “but we were able to jump
out to an 11-0 lead to start the game. The guys did
a great job setting the tone early by hitting eight
first quarter shots in the paint. Alex Bruggeman,
Josh Thompson, and Michael Brown did a nice job
defending their post players and our guards limited
their penetration. After building an early 10-point
lead, we found it hard to guard their best perimeter
shooter who hit three three-pointers in each half.
We will have to emphasize player recognition
and proper close outs in next week’s practice. The
second quarter lead was maintained by the hot
shooting of two bench guards, AJ Haag and Ben
Lau. Jace Engstler’s three third quarter three-point
shots helped push our lead to 11 going into the
fourth. It is evident that we play well when we get
our post players involved, and hopefully we can do
that in our three games next week.”
The Cardinals are now 4 – 3 in NIC play and
7 – 5 overall. They will begin the second round
of league play this week, traveling to Osage on
Tuesday and West Hancock on Friday.
pointers to build a 11-6 lead midway through the
first quarter. Getting off to a better start is an area
that we have been emphasizing lately and the
girls have really taken it to heart. It has also been
really nice to see that we are getting contributions
from a lot of different players in many areas. Our
offensive rebounding, assists to turnover ratio,
and bench production have all improved over
the last seven games as players are gaining more
experience and have accepted their roles on the
team and are playing very unselfishly. I thought
in the second quarter we got in a hurry a little bit
offensively and Belmond-Klemme was able to
take advantage of our lack of patience on offense
Cardinal JV Boys Play Well
There’s been plenty of basketball
action for the Garner-Hayfield
junior varsity and freshmen boys’
basketball teams. The JV Cardinals
have soared to a 5 – 3 record during
the first half of the season while the
freshmen have won three of five
games.
Garner’s JV squad opened their
season on December 5 at home
against West Fork. It was a tough
way to start the year as West Fork
handed the Cards a 45 – 27 loss.
Cody Roberts finished as leading
scorer for the Cardinals with six
points followed by Damon Quandt
and Michael Brown with five points
apiece. Jared Clay chipped in four
points, Seth Williams and Tyler Clay
scored three points each and Michael
Jolivette added a free throw.
The JV boys got into the win
column on December 11 with a 44 –
36 win over West Hancock. Michael
Brown had a big night offensively
for Garner, finishing with 14 points.
Alex Van Gerpen added 11 points
to the Cardinal total followed by
Damon Quandt with eight. Rounding
out Garner’s scoring were Jared Clay
with three points, Cody Roberts with
two points and a free throw from
Michael Boehnke and Tylcer Clay.
Newman Catholic handed the
Garner JV a 46 – 30 loss on December
15. The Knight defense allowed no
Cardinals to reach double figures as
Michael Brown’s nine points paced
Garner. Blake Risius followed with
six points while Brad Nedved, Alex
Van Gerpen and Tim Molencamp
all scored four points. Cody Miller
added a bucket and Damon Quandt
hit a free throw.
The Cardinal JV recovered for
a 46 – 21 win at Lake Mills on
December 18. Joe Ermer exploded
for 15 points to lead Garner in the
scorebook. Cole Greiman and A.J.
Haag followed with seven and six
points respectively while Cody
Miller, Michael Brown and Cody
Roberts scored four points apiece.
Completing Garner’s scoring were
Damon Quandt, Blake Risius and
Zach Greiman all with two points.
The Cardinals’ made it two in a
row with a 38 – 28 win over Central
Springs on December 19. Michael
Brown’s 12 points led Garner and
A.J. Haag added seven points. Also in
the scorebook for the Cardinals were
Seth Williams with four points, Cody
Miller, Michael Boehnke andDamon
Quandt all with three points, Brad
Nedved, Blake Risius and Alex Van
Gerpen all with two points and a free
throw each from Drake Stadtlander
and Cody Roberts.
Osage posted a 35 – 31 win
over Garner in the Cardinals’ final
game before Christmas break on
December 21. Damon Quandt was
the only Cardinal to reach double
figures as the sophomore guard
finished the night with 10 points.
Alex Van Gerpen chipped in six
points, followed by Michael Brown
and get back into the game. We made
some adjustments at halftime to focus
on slowing down their leading scorer
Dana Christiansen, who had hurt us
immensely in the first half. I thought
in the second half were very solid
both offensively and defensively.
Once again, we came out in the first
three minutes of the third quarter
and executed very, very well to get
control of this game. From there, we
were able to take advantage of some
Belmond-Klemme miscues and put
the game out of reach. A very nice
team win and we seem to be turning
the corner and beginning to create
some momentum here in the secondhalf
of the season.”
Round two of NIC play begins
this week with the Cardinals heading
to Osage on Tuesday and West
Hancock on Friday. G-H will then
host Rockford in non-conference
action on Saturday.
9
with five and Brad Nedved with
four. Completing the scoring were
Joe Ermer, Blake Risius and Cody
Roberts all with two points.
G-H came back from the holiday
break to post a 41 – 39 win over
Forest City. Blake Risius and
Michael Brown led Garner with 13
and 10 points respectively while A.J.
Haag and Joe Ermer each scored
eight. Alex Van Gerpen’s two points
completed the scoring total.
The Cardinals stayed perfect after
break with a 32 – 25 win against
Algona. Joe Ermer’s 10 points led
the Cardinals while Michael Brown
chipped in six points. A.J. Haag and
Damon Quandt scored five points
apiece followed by Blake Risius
with four and one point from Cody
Miller and Alex Van Gerpen.
The Cardinal Freshmen opened
their season with a 33 – 31 win over
Algona on December 3. Alex Van
Gerpen and Heath Hutcheson scored
eight and seven points to lead Garner
offensively followed by Keith
Schwickerath, Zach Buseman and
Austin Kropp all with two points.
Also in the scorebook were Nick
Roberts, Seth Williams and Ryan
Sonquist all with two points.
Garners ninth grade improved to 2
– 0 with a 39 – 30 win over West Fork
on December 5. Heath Hutcheson
finished as leading scorer in the
game with 10 points followed by
Seth Williams and Alex Van Gerpen
with seven points each. Brad Nedved
chipped in six points, Zach Buseman
added four while Nick Roberts, Nick
Mahlstedt, Austin Kropp and Nathan
Hrubes all scored two points.
Forest City handed Garner a 39 – 34
loss on December 12. Seth Williams
and Alex Van Gerpen scored 12
and nine points respectively to lead
the young Cardinals. Brad Nedved
added four points while Heath
Hutcheson, Keith Schwickerath
and Zach Buseman all scored two
points.
Newman’s freshman team proved
to be too much for the Cardinals on
December 12. The Knights outscored
Garner 43 – 28 in that contest. Alex
Van Gerpen scored 11 points to lead
Garner followed by Heath Hutcheson
with five. Nick Roberts and Zach
Buseman scored four points apiece
while Seth Williams and Brad
Nedved each chipped in two points.
G-H got back into the win column
with a 50 – 38 win at West Hancock
on December 14. Zach Buseman and
Alex Van Gerpen led Garner with
12 and 11 points respectively. Keith
Schwickerath and Heath Hutcheson
added six and five points to the
offense while Brad Nedved and
Caleb Ploeger score four points each.
Nick Roberts and Ryan Sonquist
scored three points apiece and Alex
Ricke added two.
seasons.
NFL Playoffs Gone Wild
by Nick Svare
Have you been enjoying the cold
weather, loud domes, screaming fans
and hard hitting? Because that is
what the NFL playoffs are all about.
Year after year the match-ups keep
getting better and the upsets bigger.
This year it doesn’t look as if anything
is going to change.
The first round of the NFC playoffs
featured rematches of games
from the last week of the season. The
Dallas Cowboys silenced their critics
and kept their momentum going
as they manhandled the Philadelphia
Eagles for the second week in a row,
this time coming away with a 34-14
victory. Numerous analysts called
the Cowboys the hottest team in the
playoffs, but the Minnesota Vikings
challenged that opinion with a 34-3
beat down of the NFC East champs.
Brett Favre threw four touchdown
passes, and the defense absolutely
smothered Tony Romo.
The second NFC wild card rematch
featured the Green Bay
Packers and the Arizona Cardinals.
Despite the Packers having the second-ranked
overall defense, this was
a game of offense as the two teams
combined for over 1000 yards of total
offense and 96 points in a 51-45
victory for the Cardinals. They rode
Let us put
your print
AD
on the
WEB!
that into New Orleans where they,
too, suffered a whooping; the Saints
crushed them 45-15.
This weekend’s NFC Championship
game between the Saints and
the Vikings should be an exciting
match-up as both teams are hungry
to make it to the Super Bowl. Both
teams have very high-powered offenses,
and it will be interesting to
see if the Viking defensive line can
duplicate their performance of this
past week and this time disrupt Drew
Brees and the best passing offense in
the NFL.
This year the battle just to make
the playoffs went down to the wire
in the AFC. The New York Jets and
Baltimore Ravens were the two
teams who simply had to win the last
week of the season to be in, and both
did. That set up the third rematch
of the playoffs, this time between
the Jets and the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals had rested many
of their starters the last week of the
season and were expected to dismiss
the Jets, but the underdog Jets came
away with a 24-14 victory. That sent
them to San Diego last week to play
the AFC team sporting the best winning
streak entering the playoffs.
Most people predicted an end to the
Jets’ run, but with the help of three
missed field goals by perhaps the
most accurate kicker in the league,
former Iowa Hawkeye Nate Kaeding,
and penalties and turnovers, the
Jets rode their underdog mentality to
a 17-14 uprooting of the Chargers.
The second game of the AFC wild
card round featured the New England
Patriots, always strong at home,
and the Baltimore Ravens, notorious
for winning on the road in the playoffs
in past years. It was the Ravens
who continued their trend; they beat
the Patriots 33-14. But the Ravens
streak came to a quick end when they
took a trip to Indianapolis and were
pounded 20-3 by the Colts, who are
now looking pretty smart for resting
some of their starters.
The AFC championship game
will find those underdog NY Jets going
to Indianapolis to face a Peyton
Manning-led, efficient offense and
a fast defense. Still, Rex Ryan’s defense
has been up to every task so far,
and the Jet offense under Mark Sanchez
has been scoring just enough to
make their defense’s efforts pay off.
Be ready for another weekend of
last minute scoring and maybe an
upset. I can’t wait to see who reaches
this year’s Super Bowl!
admission, an exclusive 4-H Cyclone
“We are looking to be close to
THE GARNER LEADER & SIGNAL
Wednesday, JANUARY 20, 2010, Garner, Iowa 50438
Compensation Board Recommends
1% Pay Raise For County Officers
Acknowledging that times are tough,
the Hancock County Compensation
Board recommended a 1 percent pay
raise for elected county officials. The
board met Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Proposed salaries for fiscal 2010-
11 for county officers are as follows
(current salary in parenthesis):
Hancock County Auditor, Recorder,
Treasurer - $48,182 ($47,705);
Hancock County Sheriff – $63,559
($62,930) Hancock County Attorney
– $76,886 ($76,125), and Board of
Supervisors – $28,704 ($28,420) each.
“The Compensation Board is very
pleased with the elected officials
with whom we are blessed,” stated
board chairman Earl W. Hill, Britt.
“We, of course, would like to have
recommended a larger increase for
each. But, with some people off work
and other economic issues with which
to contend, the Board did not feel it
could recommend anything larger.”
Salary recommendations from
Compensation Boards in other North
Iowa counties has ranged from a salary
freeze to 1.5 percent for their elected
officials.
The pay proposals will be forwarded
to the Hancock County Board of
Supervisors who may accept them as
FUTURE OF EDUCATION
from front page
teachers and students becoming more
enthralled with the novelty of new tech
than its practical use. “Technology is
only a resource. It’s all in how you use
it.”
Tyler Gasper matched this sentiment,
emphasizing the importance of the
human element in teaching and noting
that a computer is not a replacement
for a teacher.
“You don’t learn as much if you are
completely focused learning through
technology rather than with an actual
person,” said Gasper.
Connor Kline expressed his interest
in the one-to-one laptop initiative and
felt that putting a personal computer in
every student’s hands would increase
not only learning opportunities, but
give students needed experience in
computer use.
“It’s what they’re going to use in
college and what they’re going to use
in the real world,” said Kline.
Nathan Tornquist reminded the
boards that while censorship is
ultimately necessary when dealing
with the internet in the classroom,
steps should be taken to make sure that
the rules designed to protect students
don’t become a hindrance to them.
“As a school, you have to regulate
what students have access to, but I’d
like to discourage the use of extensive
censorship to the point that it’s
inhibiting to the individual student.”
Using Facebook as an example,
Tornquist described how while it
may be blocked by schools to prevent
distraction, the social networking
site was crucial to him in completing
a group project with classmates in
different cities over the holidays.
As even e-mail becomes obsolete
to the newest generation, social
networking sites like Facebook can
become the most efficient, if not
the only, means of communication
between groups.
Moving away from technology,
Katie Wencl expressed a desire to
see more focus on foreign language
studies, especially at an earlier age.
With the United States traditionally
behind the curve when it comes to
second languages, Wencl noted that
in a global market, knowing multiple
languages can put kids from other
countries at a significant advantage.
“They’re learning English at such
a young age and they’re going to be
competing with us when we’re old
enough,” said Wencl.
As the evening concluded, the
school boards heard from Dr. Fisher,
Clear Lake School Board President
Tom Lovell, and IASB member Susan
Shaw, who continued to discuss the
task of renovating the education
system and doing so on an ever
decreasing budget.
“We need to prepare our kids for a
different world than the one we were
prepared for,” said Dr. Fisher.
meeting were: Gerald Thiedeman,
of School Boards is recommending that
districts not submit a memorandum
of understanding concerning
participation in the program to the
State Department of Education. IASB
cited concerns with language requiring
school boards to engage in collective
bargaining regarding interventions for
persistently low-achieving schools.
