LETTER FROM THE DEAN Looking back over last year, it was fun! We began a major initiative to increase awareness about library resources with TCU students. We completed the redesign of the library’s website with sections for Special Collections and the Friends of the TCU Library. And for the Friends of the TCU Library, the 40th anniversary celebration this past spring was a memorable occasion. Many library resources are digital these days, particularly journals and databases. Many students come to TCU very well prepared academically, but not necessarily familiar with the breadth of digital resources accessible from a university library. If you are a high school student and haven’t used databases with thousands of books scanned from the 18th or 19th centuries, or databases with decades of newspapers indexed by key word, or databases with streaming video of ballets and operas, how would you know to use these resources for your student assignments? The need for this awareness was a focus for us this past year. We reached out to TCU students to increase their knowledge not only about the Library itself, but also about the Library’s extraordinary collection of digital resources. Staff members who are library liaisons are matched with individual academic departments. They were busy this year teaching instructional sessions about databases and specialized resources on the web to demonstrate efficient use of these resources. We want TCU students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them through the Library. Our READ posters also tied in with these ideas, by increasing our “cool” factor with TCU students. The big news is forthcoming next year. Library administrators are meeting with architects this summer to begin planning the renovation of the 1980s wing. The fall newsletter will have more information. Excitement is in the air! At any time, if you would like to share your thoughts or suggestions about the Library, please give me a call or send me an email. Sincerely, June Koelker Dean, Mary Couts Burnett Library 2 3

2011/2012 HIGHLIGHTS FALL WELCOME The TCU Library kicked off the 2011-2012 academic year by welcoming students with an ice cold bottle of water. August was a record HOT! HOT! and the students much appreciated the opportunity to cool down. “I LOVE THE TCU LIBRARY” CONTEST We had our first annual student contest in celebration of Valentine’s Day. It was the perfect opportunity for students to express their love for the library with a written message. The “I Love the TCU Library” contest was successful among the students with an overwhelming amount of entries. CONTEST WINNERS Jessica Polasek Molly Johnson Lauren Pahos FIRST-YEAR ORIENTATION The Library helped incoming first-year students transition to TCU by helping them become acclimated to the university and introducing them to the library’s resources and services. The TCU Library had some significant happenings this past year that made a difference to students, faculty, staff and Friends. None of it could have been possible without the outstanding leadership and teamwork of the library’s staff. FACULTYSPEAK SERIES Presented twice a year, the FacultySpeak lecture series features TCU Faculty members speaking on current events, their publications or interesting topics in their field. Dr. Tricia Jenkins The CIA in Hollywood: How the Agency Shapes Film and Television Dr. Mary Volcansek TCU’s History in Fort Worth TAKING A BREAK During the week of spring finals the library gave away power/ energy drinks to students. Coke donated the drinks that we handed out during the four-day event. TECHNOLOGY • Redesigned the Friends of the TCU Library website (http://library.tcu.edu/friend) • Roll out of Facebook, social networking outlet to help stay connected with students and the TCU Community (http://facebook.com/tculibrary) • Implemented Text-A- Librarian. This new service allows students to ask short, quick questions and in turn receive a quick, short response. Students use their cell phones to text their question to one of our TCU research librarians. NEW FURNITURE New furniture was added in the Bistro area. New look, more seating, good times. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LIBRARY STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER Beth Callahan, Government Information Library Specialist, was the 2011-2012 Staff Excellence Award winner. Beth was chosen for this award for her stellar performance in managing and maintaining all federal and state document collections. Beth took on a huge project this year, moving and weeding out outdated government material and condensing the collection. Kudos to Beth for an outstanding job! 4 Read Value Josh Elander and Natalie Ventress new faces of poster campaign Thank you letter sent by Staley Middle School student, Alaina Nemic The READ posters are one of the hottest things on campus - and they’re hanging in the TCU Library! This year, two All-American athletes Josh Elander, TCU Baseball, and Natalie Ventress, TCU Women’s Basketball, were added to this valuable collection. Josh and Natalie where selected to be part of the READ poster campaign for their commitment of high achievement on and off the field/court. Stand-outs on our TCU campus, these individuals have earned the respect and admiration of the entire academic community. Since the launch of the READ campaign in 2010-2011, TCU students, faculty and the local population have expressed their support of the valuable message it sends. The TCU Library is the place that provides positive rewards to students wanting to enhance their academic experience. This campaign also raises the library’s visibility on campus as not only the place to be, but the “place for great minds.” 5
