LETTER FROM THE DEAN
Looking back over last year, it was fun! We began a major
initiative to increase awareness about library resources with
TCU students. We completed the redesign of the library’s
website with sections for Special Collections and the Friends of
the TCU Library. And for the Friends of the TCU Library, the
40th anniversary celebration this past spring was a memorable
occasion.
Many library resources are digital these days, particularly
journals and databases. Many students come to TCU very well prepared academically,
but not necessarily familiar with the breadth of digital resources accessible from
a university library. If you are a high school student and haven’t used databases
with thousands of books scanned from the 18th or 19th centuries, or databases with
decades of newspapers indexed by key word, or databases with streaming video of
ballets and operas, how would you know to use these resources for your student
assignments?
The need for this awareness was a focus for us this past year. We reached out to TCU
students to increase their knowledge not only about the Library itself, but also about
the Library’s extraordinary collection of digital resources. Staff members who are
library liaisons are matched with individual academic departments. They were busy
this year teaching instructional sessions about databases and specialized resources
on the web to demonstrate efficient use of these resources. We want TCU students
to take advantage of the opportunities available to them through the Library. Our
READ posters also tied in with these ideas, by increasing our “cool” factor with TCU
students.
The big news is forthcoming next year. Library administrators are meeting with
architects this summer to begin planning the renovation of the 1980s wing. The fall
newsletter will have more information. Excitement is in the air!
At any time, if you would like to share your thoughts or suggestions about the Library,
please give me a call or send me an email.
Sincerely,
June Koelker
HIGHLIGHTS
FALL WELCOME
The TCU Library kicked off the
2011-2012 academic year by
welcoming students with an ice
cold bottle of water. August was
a record HOT! HOT! and the
students much appreciated the
opportunity to cool down.
“I LOVE THE
TCU LIBRARY”
CONTEST
We had our first annual
student contest in celebration
of Valentine’s Day. It was the
perfect opportunity for students
to express their love for the
library with a written message.
The “I Love the TCU Library”
contest was successful among the
students with an overwhelming
amount of entries.
FIRST-YEAR
ORIENTATION
The Library helped incoming
first-year students transition to
TCU by helping them become
acclimated to the university and
introducing them to the library’s
resources and services.
The TCU Library had some significant happenings this past year
that made a difference to students, faculty, staff and Friends. None
of it could have been possible without the outstanding leadership
and teamwork of the library’s staff.
FACULTYSPEAK
SERIES
Presented twice a year, the
FacultySpeak lecture series
features TCU Faculty members
TECHNOLOGY
• Redesigned the Friends of
the TCU Library website
(http://library.tcu.edu/friend)
• Roll out of Facebook, social
networking outlet to help
stay connected with students
and the TCU Community
(http://facebook.com/tculibrary)
• Implemented Text-A-
Librarian. This new service
allows students to ask short,
quick questions and in
turn receive a quick, short
response. Students use their
cell phones to text their
question to one of our TCU
research librarians.
NEW
FURNITURE
New furniture was added in
the Bistro area. New look, more
seating, good times.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LIBRARY
STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER
Beth Callahan, Government Information Library Specialist, was the
2011-2012 Staff Excellence Award winner. Beth was chosen for this
award for her stellar performance in managing and maintaining all
Josh Elander and Natalie Ventress
new faces of poster campaign
Thank you letter sent by Staley
Middle School student, Alaina Nemic
The READ posters are one of the hottest things on
campus - and they’re hanging in the TCU Library! This
year, two All-American athletes Josh Elander, TCU
Baseball, and Natalie Ventress, TCU Women’s Basketball,
were added to this valuable collection.
Josh and Natalie where selected to be part of the
READ poster campaign for their commitment of high
achievement on and off the field/court. Stand-outs on our
TCU campus, these individuals have earned the respect
and admiration of the entire academic community.
Since the launch of the READ campaign in 2010-2011,
TCU students, faculty and the local population have
expressed their support of the valuable message it sends.
The TCU Library is the place that provides positive
rewards to students wanting to enhance their academic
experience. This campaign also raises the library’s
visibility on campus as not only the place to be, but the
“place for great minds.”
SPECIAL
COLLECTIONS
AND ARCHIVES
Located on the second floor of the library, Special
Collections provides access to rare books and unique
collections, and the Archives provide access to the
history of the university, including the papers of
the former Speaker of the House, Jim Wright.
This past year Special Collections took on a big project of
digitizing scrapbooks of former TCU students and faculty.
Each of the scrapbooks contains memorabilia that brings to
life the experience of being a TCU student in the early 1900’s.
During the digitization process, it was discovered that three
of the scrapbooks belonged to a group of friends (between 1919-
1926) - Dura Louise Cockrell, Edwina Day and Donna Jean
Billington. Every one of these historical scrapbooks is as unique
as the student that made it.
The fascination is these scrapbooks not only offer a window
into TCU’s history, but present a snapshot in time through the
memories and experiences of the TCU students and faculty who
lived it. The new digitized scrapbook collection is available on
the TCU Library website, http://library.tcu.edu/spcoll/.
EXHIBITS
Special Collections designed several charming exhibits for our
perusal and edification. One exhibit explored the history of
one of the most popular and socially influential authors of the
nineteenth century, Horatio Alger, Jr. Alger is an author of boy’s
adventure stories whose heroes lead exemplary lives to strive
and succeed in the face of adversity and poverty. His best known
book is “Rags to Riches.”
Currently on display is the history of KTCU-FM, the campus
radio station. This mesmeric story examines the history about
the early days of 88.7, “The Choice.”
40th ANNIVERSARY EVENT
A Gathering of Friends. A Milestone Celebration. The Friends of the TCU
Library celebrated 40 years of helping the Library preserve its excellence
while continuing to enhance Special Collections and library services for
TCU students and faculty. To celebrate this occasion, the Friends hosted a
40th Anniversary event at the Harlan Crow Library with a presentation by
Dr. Nowell Donovan. This affair brought together individuals who, over the
years, have dedicated and supported the work of the Mary Couts Burnett
Library and who also wanted to join in this wonderful and memorable
celebration.

As the TCU Friends celebrate 40 years of its founding in 1972,
the university recognizes the importance of the library in its quest
to enhance the university experience by creating a world-class
library that facilitates exploration and scholarship. Plans are
underway for renovations and improvements that will strengthen
the Mary Couts Burnett Library services, resources and overall
experience. TCU and the library are all about the experience. It’s
about opening minds and doors to success.
What makes a really good library even better? In the case of Mary
Couts Burnett Library, it is the Friends of the TCU Library. Each
year the Friends support the Library with special purchases for
collections, the staff and facilities. In recent years the Friends
provided funding for the purchase of C-19, a key database that
indexes nineteenth century literature, funding for furniture in the
Information Commons area and funding for a color digital book
scanner which is used for scanning oversized books, maps, posters
and fragile, older books. The Friends also have a long history of
funding rare book purchases. For the last 40 years, the Friends of
the TCU Library have enriched our campus with their generosity.
Friends membership is open to anyone who has an interest in
Library programs and activities. We are proud of our Library and
encourage you to become a member of the Friends of the TCU
Library as TCU remains a gateway to global information for its
