Romance. Friendship. Joy. And the possibility of happy endings. What more do you want in
a feel-good read? In the latest Katie Fforde (love her) release, Lizzie’s mother is keen for her
to have A Wedding in the Country, to a suitable chap chosen, obviously, by mum. And to
learn how to be a ‘good wife’, she’s sent off to cookery school in London. It’s 1963 … and
London is swinging! Lizzie cuts her hair, buys a mini dress and moves in with two great
friends. All of her mum’s plans are forgotten. She’s going to have fun … even if that entails
falling in love with someone who appears to be engaged to someone else. The perfect
read for a lazy Easter weekend. • Dodging doctor’s orders, 17-year-old Lenni, who’s living
in the terminal ward, joins an art class where she bumps into fellow hospital patient
Margot, a rebel-hearted 83-year-old from the next ward. Their bond is instant as they
realise that together they have lived an astonishing one hundred years. To celebrate
their shared century, they decide to paint their life stories … of growing old and staying
young, of giving joy and receiving kindness, of losing love and finding the person who
is everything. Fiercely alive, disarmingly funny and brimming with tenderness, The One
Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin unwraps the extraordinary
gift of life, even when it is about to be taken away, and revels in our infinite capacity for
friendship and love when we need them most. Keep the tissues at your side. • Was there
a single book club in the late 1990s which didn’t have The Notebook on the must-read
list? Impossible. And now, 25 years after its first release, Nicholas Sparks’ love story to
end all love stories is being released. It’s the story of Noah Calhoun, who returns from
war and, in an attempt to escape the ghosts of battle, sets his mind and his body to
restoring an old plantation home to its former beauty. But he’s haunted by memories of
the beautiful Allie, who he’d met years before … a girl who stole his heart at the funfair,
whose parents didn’t approve, a girl he wrote to every day for a year. When she turns up
on his doorstep, he has a chance to win her back. Small problem … she’s engaged to
someone else. You’ve seen the movie … you may have read the book … but read it (and
weep) again anyway. It’s not called a classic heartbreaker for nothing. And to celebrate
the 25th anniversary edition, we’ve got a special giveaway … three people can win a
copy of The Notebook plus a case of Fat bastard Rosé … your next book club
get-together’s going to be very special indeed. To enter, visit Get It National Magazines
on Facebook and enter on The Notebook’s post.

Forget the romance … we want an
adrenaline rush. And oh boy, do we have
that in these thrilling reads
Oh … we do love a Stephen Leather thriller. And if we put aside the fact that
it centres around billionaire and big game hunter Jon van der Sandt (the book
opens with him killing a massive bull elephant in Botswana), this is one hell of
a read. Van der Sandt is seeking revenge – while he’s shooting big game, his
family is holidaying at a luxury beach resort, where they’re killed by jihadist
terrorists. Van der Sandt wants vengeance, and he’s rich enough to arrange it.
He sends in a team of skilled ex-soldiers to bring the terrorists to him … but in
a case of mistaken identity, British doctor Raj Patel is taken hostage too. He’s
in war-torn Syria to treat the injured, and is only in the terrorist camp to help
some men who were hurt in an accidental explosion. Fortunately, the doctor
was trained as a soldier, and Van der Sandt gets more than he bargained for
when he kicks off his revenge hunting spree. With more than 40 books under
his belt, Leather’s not slowing down … The Hunting is a thrill-a-minute. • Allie
Reynolds is a former freestyle snowboarder, who spent five winters racing down
the mountains of France, Switzerland, Austria, and Canada. She’s taken her love
of snowboarding and made it the focus of her exciting debut novel, Shiver. A
dangerous natural environment, hugely competitive people, mind games and
sabotage make for a thrilling sport … and read. Five friends – all ex competitors,
who haven’t seen each other for a decade – meet for an out-of-season reunion
in a French Alps resort. But an ice-breaking game reveals they don’t really know
who arranged the reunion, or why. Things turn menacing really quickly … and it
appears all have secrets they’d rather not share from their time as competitors.
Including one involving murder. Loads of snowboard jargon, plenty of
suspense. • Another fave (this is turning out to be a smashingly good month for
us) … Gregg Hurwitz, and his hero character Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X. Evan’s
a foster home child, trained off-the-books as a government assassin. He’s been
forced into retirement but then gets a urgent plea from someone unexpected.
His mother needs help protecting a man who’s in the wrong place at the wrong
time. Running from an assassination team, he has no safe place to hide. Evan,
it appears, is his only hope. That’s until the secret group catches on to what
Evan is doing … and now Evan’s life is on the line, too. Prodigal Son is another
gripping thriller you can. not. put. down.
A missing bride. A blood-splattered
wedding dress. A guest list of
A-list celebrities. And a TV crew
documenting every extravagant detail.
Bring in the NYPD’s top team. James
Patterson and Marshall Karp’s NYPD
Red 6 – the sixth book in the series
– sees a bride kidnapped from her
dressing room. Fortunately, Detective
Kylie MacDonald and her plus-one,
Detective Zach Jordan, are guests, so
they’re right there in the thick of all the
drama. It’s all smart, fast writing with
loads of twists and turns – exactly what
keeps Patterson fans returning again
and again, making sure he stays on the
best-selling lists worldwide.
Little,
but fierce
is the epitome of warmth and friendliness.
The White River-based mum of two
is also a businesswoman – she owns
Ruby Models, is a pageant director
and also an audit manager for the
Mpumalanga Economic Regulator.
After completing her BCom in
accounting sciences in Pretoria,
Yondela moved to the Lowveld,
intending to stay for three years while
doing her articles. “That was the plan,”
she laughs, “but destiny had other
ideas. I met and married my husband,
Bheki Mlambo, and we had our two
kids, Lukhanyo (7) and Luthando (2).”
Yondela’s true passion lies in
helping people to embrace their
own individuality and in doing
so to become the best version of
themselves. “The thing is that society’s
norms are not always accurate representations
of how things should be.
I am passionate about empowering
our youth, both male and female. My
objective is to make sure my clients do
not measure their beauty and value
based on what societal measures are,
but to embrace their own God-given
beauty, because each person’s beauty
comes from whatever it is that makes
them exceptional.
“I have wanted to model ever since I
was seven. As a teen I was told I was
too short, but the modelling industry
has since evolved and is still evolving,
so there are opportunities for each
and every person. After having my
first child at the age of 30, I decided
to pursue my passion and the rest is
history!”
“Following your dreams can make life
a little frantic and it comes as a bit of a
surprise to learn that Yondela is in fact
a shy and private person, despite being
in the spotlight so much. “Because
I work in this industry, everyone
assumes I’m a people person, but I’m
actually an introvert. I spend a lot of my
time with people and my schedule is
hectic,” she sighs. “Apart from running
Ruby Models, I’m employed full-time
and I’m a mother and wife. Because
I love all of these aspects of my life, I
quite enjoy the frenzied nature of it
all. I’ve also realised the importance of
balancing my daily schedule and have
learnt how to delegate. I now have an
assistant at the modelling school as
well as someone to help out with the
kids at home. Some responsibilities
can’t be delegated, but having outside
help does enable me to enjoy a little
more me time!”
While keeping busy and having
her hands full may be the reality for
Yondela, she is quick to admit that
business in South Africa, especially for
women, is tough, and even more so
since Covid-19 came along. “Bear in
mind that our country was already in
a recession before the pandemic, and
then lockdown came. As a woman
you have so many roles to play, but
then we have also been given the
ability to multitask and we make great
leaders, therefore we do have the tools
to rise to the challenge. And because
the Lowveld is predominantly rural,
it isn’t always possible for people to
support business ventures, especially
in my industry, as they have to travel
far, but there is definitely still a great
spirit of ubuntu in South Africa and the
Lowveld.
“Focus, persistence and consistency are
the keys to overcoming challenges! As
with so many things, business needs
to be able to evolve and adapt with
the current times. One thing I can say
to aspiring female business owners in
South Africa, is never be scared to ask
for help; grab new opportunities and
learn from each new process.”
Covid and lockdown have been tough,
but they have taught Yondela a few things, such as to be more intentional
about life, to spend time wisely and to make the best use of what she has been
granted. “I lost two family members due to the virus,” she says. “It made me
realise life is short; the only sure thing is right now. So take the risks, make use of
opportunities, seize every moment. Tomorrow is never certain.”
‘Never be scared to ask for help;
grab new opportunities and learn
from each new process’
One happy family
ROSEMARY HAIR RINSE
From the glorious shores of the Mediter-ranean, rosemary is a versatile herb
that is especially beneficial for creating healthy, shiny hair. It helps to prevent
thinning, stimulates hair follicles, rinses out hair product residue, relieves an
itchy, dry scalp and, used regularly, helps to blend in greys. To make a luxurious
rosemary hair rinse, bring 2 cups of water to the boil, reduce the heat and add
two generous sprigs of rosemary. Simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on, turn
off the heat and leave to cool. Remove the sprigs. Pour over washed and rinsed
hair, massaging into the scalp and through to the ends.
BATH BOMB
Whisk together 100 grams
bicarbonate of soda,
50 grams citric acid, 25 grams
cornflour and 25 grams Epsom
salt. In a separate bowl, mix 2
tablespoons of sunflower or canola
oil with a few drops of essential
oil and a few drops of liquid food
colouring. Stir well. Slowly add the
oil into the dry mixture, whisking
constantly. As soon as all the oil is
in, add a few drops of water and
whisk. It will fizz a bit, so stir quickly.
The mixture must clump together
when held in your hand, and not
be too wet. Add a sprinkling of
dried lavender or rose petals to the
bottom of the mould (optional).
Pack your mixture into a mould
– you can use empty dessert or
yogurt cups, Easter egg packaging,
silicone ice trays, cupcake bases,
biscuit cutters and so on. Leave to
dry in the mould for about 4 hours,
and carefully remove, ready to
drop into a heavenly hot bath.
BODY MOISTURISER
To make a creamy, moisturising
lotion, all you need is a base cream
(we used aqueous) and oil, base
oil and essential oils. Add ½ cup of
aqueous cream into a glass jar and
stir in 1 tablespoon each of apricot
and avocado oil, then add 10 to 15
drops of essential oils of your choice
(citrus, peppermint, lavender and
chamomile all work well and smell
heavenly), mixing well until the oil
and cream are well blended. Seal the
jar and use within 2 weeks.
AROMATIC ROOM SPRITZER
Pour one cup of distilled water into a spray
bottle, and add 10 to 15 drops of essential oil
(lavender and vanilla are lovely),
1 teaspoon of salt, and one tablespoon of
base spirit such as vodka. Put the lid on and
shake well to mix. This aromatic spritzer will
bring a fresh and lovely scent to any room,
but remember to shake the bottle well before
each use to ensure the components are
thoroughly blended.
FOOT SCRUB
Mix 1½ cups of fine sea salt, ¼ cup of Epsom
salt and ¼ cup of bicarb with 6 tablespoons
of coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of avocado
oil. Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil and
5 drops of peppermint or citrus essential oil
and mix well. Scoop into a jar and seal until
your next foot scrub. This recipe works like a
charm on dead skin, and is especially good for
cracked heels.
Granny chic. Natural materials. Quiet spaces.
DECOR TRENDS
Yellow hues and
granny prints … two
trends in one!
Grandmillennial
We’re rather enjoying the revival of ‘Granny
Chic’. An ode to old school, it’s the revival of
furniture you no doubt would find in your
grandparents’ home. And the reason it’s
so popular? It evokes feelings of comfort,
nostalgia and tradition … exactly what we
long for in turbulent, uncertain times. It’s easy
to recreate in your bedroom … all you need is
a massive, soft quilt in a soft colour and pretty
pattern. Granny prints are also used to great
effect in the lounge … combine a floral print
with a few modern pieces and add (dare we
say clutter) keepsakes, sculptures, artwork and
pottery from your life and travels. Rugs, mirrors,
scatters (new or nicked from gran) add to the
warmth of the room.
Hello yellow
Pantone recently announced two colours as their shades of the year
… and we’re all over Illuminating – a zingy yellow that’s warm and
optimistic. They added Ultimate Grey, describing it as a practical and
solid combination, giving us resilience and hope for the year ahead.
If you prefer a more neutral palette, Dulux Colour of the Year is Brave
Ground – a warm, natural neutral … a nurturing and balancing colour. It’s
versatile, so mixes well with other shades … think relaxing off-white, bold
pinks and reds, and strong blues and greens.
Talking green … look out for sage green, which promises to make
another appearance this year – a lovely restorative, natural colour that
goes with absolutely everything.
And for those who aren’t afraid of colour … there’ll be pops of mulberry
tones and warm reds combined with patterns and prints that evoke
happiness and cheerfulness, as well as ocean blues, from deep inky tones
through to soft aquas and teals … the perfect colours to create a tranquil
and peaceful home.
Natural. Ethical.
Sustainable
Sustainability is the 2021 buzzword
and there’s is a huge focus on
products that will not only last
longer, but will also not harm the
environment. As we become more
aware of this, the demand for more
natural and recycled textiles grows.
Look out for 100 per cent cotton
linen – pure, natural, breathable, and
it keeps you cool in Summer and
warm in Winter. Although it’s not
the most inexpensive option, it lasts
almost twice as long as cheaper manmade
alternatives, so you won’t need
to replace it as frequently. Cotton
is naturally hypoallergenic, so has
limited association with any allergies,
and really, could there be anything
better than climbing into bed with
fresh, clean, cotton sheets?
Bring nature indoors
This isn’t a new trend, but gosh is it
growing … faster than an invasive
weed. All things garden-related are
desirable … from vertical gardens and
indoor gardening to botanical prints
(in natural wooden frames, please).
That granny floral fabric will come into
its own, as will faux botanicals, which
add colour and interest and require
no watering. Bonus!
Support local
The call to support local started last
year and is growing in leaps and
bounds. As it should. So continuing
this year is the trend of seeking out
local brands that are proudly South
African and have a nod to heritage
in everything they do. Be it fabrics,
upholstery or soft furnishings, or
accessories and art, make sure to
choose brands that manufacture
items locally and support local
communities.
Our home trend tips come from the
Volpes and Biggie Best teams, two
much-loved local SA brands. For more
ideas, inspiration and great decor buys,
visit volpes.co.za, where you’ll also find
the Biggie Best collection.
Fluffy towels. Candles.
A quiet space for after
work de-stress time.
Crisp, clean 100 per cent
cotton linen … natural,
ethical and sustainable.
Mindfulness and wellness
The principles of wellness start with our own personal spaces and there are
simple ways to use home decor to inspire mindfulness in everyday life. By
creating quiet places and peaceful sanctuaries throughout your home, you can
be fully engaged and present in the moment. Use every little nook and cranny in
your house to create different zones – for reading, relaxing or simply retreating. A
comfy chair, a good reading lamp and a side table for a teacup will turn a boring
corner into a much-used quiet space. A gorgeous spa-at-home bathroom is the
ultimate space to unwind after a long day … all you need are some oversized,
luxuriously soft towels, a few scented candles and a dimmer switch. A glass of
bubbles wouldn’t go amiss!
Autumn wines
Although wine is always in season, the change in weather means a change
in tastebuds, so we’ve rounded up three delicious wines you should try.
stunning debut of Steenberg Sauvignon
The first Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc crafted by Cellarmaster
Elunda Basson has stepped out in style with a refined new
look. “With the 2020 vintage I am finally able to share my first
Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc sporting a brand new elegant look,
and I could not be happier. Our terroir inspires me every day to
create the best wine possible to share with wine lovers. I hope
everyone enjoys it as much as I do,” says Elunda. The vibrant
Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020, and the more nuanced
Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2019, are the first
of this estate’s wines to show off their new sophisticated labels
that give prominence to the wine farm’s iconic swan. The
zesty Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc has a seductive bouquet
of fresh Cape gooseberries, nettles, capsicum and white
blossom, and is all grapefruit zest
and elderflower while maintaining a
distinctive mineral core. On the other
side of the spectrum is the beautifully
textured, lightly wooded Rattlesnake
Sauvignon Blanc... rich and alluring,
elegant and comforting... an ideal
choice for enjoying on cooler days.
Elderflower - the hallmark of top
tier Constantia white wines - fresh
asparagus and Cape gooseberry
marry on the nose and palate
enlivened by hints of capsicum,
nasturtium and lime.
An elegant Bordeaux-style white
If you’re looking for a fine wine this month, you
won’t do much better than the newly released
Constantia Glen TWO 2019, an elegant, white
Bordeaux-style blend from the top tier, family
owned Constantia boutique wine estate.
This vintage has already garnered rave reviews
from leading local and international wine
commentators. And no wonder. It’s a blend
of Sauvignon Blanc (67%), which lends acidity
and backbone, and Sémillon (33%) which
contributes to the waxy weight, richness and
texture. Winemaker Justin van Wyk suggests
pairing this with dishes like grilled Kingklip with
salsa verde, or lightly seared green asparagus
and buffalo mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto.
It would also be great with oak-smoked
trout with dill & lemon crème fraiche and a
cucumber pickle.
Glühwein,
with a touch of spice
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY
When the weather turns chilly and the nights
become longer, it’s time to take a leaf out of
the book of those in the know. This recipe is
based on a traditional Swedish tipple, and if
anyone knows how to beat the cold, it’s the
Scandinavians! We may have far more days of
golden sunshine and balmy weather, but who
says we can’t indulge in a little heart-warming
mulled wine? And it’s almost orange season in
the Lowveld. This glühwein recipe is very much
to taste, so add cloves, if that is your thing, or
swap the rum for whisky. Just remember not to
let the alcohol boil, or you may as well start over.
Ingredients
• Segments from ½ a medium orange
• ¾ cup water
• 2 tbs treacle sugar
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• A small knob of ginger, peeled and bashed
• 2 star anise
• 750ml dry red wine - needn’t be fancy,
whatever you have on hand
• Rum, amaretto or cognac to taste
• A handful of ripe, red cherries, to serve.
Method
1. Remove the zest from the orange in long
strips (avoid the pith). Juice the orange and
set aside.
2. In a large saucepan, combine the water and
sugar and bring to the boil, stirring until the
sugar has dissolved. Lower the heat and add
the remaining ingredients, except for the wine,
rum and cherries.
3. Simmer the combination for about a minute
or two, until the mixture is fragrant and has the
consistency of syrup.
4. Reduce the heat again, and pour in the wine.
Allow the mixture to simmer - very slowly - for
as long as 2 hours, but at least 45 minutes.
Remember not to let it boil.
5. Strain and pour into pretty mugs or goblets,
and serve with a shot of rum, amaretto or
cognac and a swirl of orange peel or cherries.

Get cooking
According to Pieter Malan, aka
PappaChef of Kokkedoor fame,
cooking, kuiering and cuisine are
a winning recipe! And time spent
cooking with family is time well spent.
Tant Anna se Heuning
Mosterd
Who is Tant Anna? She is a top cook
and follows the family recipe for
honey mustard to the “T”. As the
recipe is generations old, why alter it
now? Honey mustard can be used as
a sauce, dip or spread.
Tant Anna se Gerookte
Mayo
Tant Anna does not deviate from
her recipes, but everyone makes a
mistake now and again. One mistake
led to the accidental smokey mayo
when some sauces got mixed in the
kitchen. This smokey mayo can be
used as a sauce, dip or spread.
Oom Karel se Geelgoud
– Sweet Mustard Mayo
Who is Oom Karel? What is life if
you cannot experiment with new
flavours? Oom Karel believes any
straightforward dish needs a kink, this
is why Oom Karel and Tant Anna do
not always see eye to eye. His mustard
mayo, for instance, is a sweet and tasty
variation on her honey mustard and
can be used as a sauce, dip or spread.
Craft Smokey Braai Sauce
– All-purpose basting/
marinade/sauce
Pieter has a secret braai sauce that has
been making the rounds with him
on his various TV show appearances
for years. Many people have asked
him to bottle it, so here it is. The braai
sauce is a 3-in-1; marinade, sauce and
basting sauce; and has delicious tastes
of ginger, paprika, balsamic vinegar,
molasses and roasted coriander. Take
your braai to the next level!
PappaChef Meat Rub –
All-purpose rub and spice
Every dish needs a go-to spice! That
type of spice must become a part of
your daily food preparation routine.
The rub was originally
designed for any roasted
or smoked cuts, be it red
or white meat, but also
works well on chips, baked
potatoes, vegetables and,
believe it or not, a little on
your krummelpap during a braai
is divine!
DIY Corndog Kit – All-inone
sweet or savoury
corndog kit
Although not South African,
PappaChef’s interest in this American
street food originated from him
seeing this treat at US sport events.
We do not yet have that privilege
in South Africa, but many children
and families would love to become
familiar with this custom! The unique
DIY kit has everything you need to
make your very own corndogs. You
just buy the sausage and provide
the oil for deep-frying. Everything is
covered, from the sticks to the batter,
and it is so easy, your kids can prepare
the treat for a quick lunch or dinner
themselves!
THE PERFECT CUT
Rudy Oosthyse
Bringing home
the Cleaver
Susan Oosthyse of Crossing SUPERSPAR and Rudy Oosthyse of The
Grove SUPERSPAR like to keep it in the family. They chat to us about
their prestigious Cleaver Award wins.
24 Get It Lowveld April 2021

Text: KARA VAN DER BERG
“I have been in the industry for
37 years... No, wait,” Rudy calculates a
moment, “38 years.” Last November,
he was announced as the national
gold winner of the prestigious
Cleaver Awards.
This award is an initiative that was
created by the South African Red
Meat Industry Forum in 2005 as a
way to motivate local butchers to
improve their standards. Consumers
nominate the butchery of their
choice, after which those with the
most nominations are anonymously
assessed by judges based on
212 various points.
The points are awarded based on
different criteria, like hygiene, variety
of stock, advice given to customers
and, of course, red meat. The wall
behind the butchery counter is
adorned with 10 of Rudy’s Cleaver
Awards, made in the form of knives; he
has won the Cleaver 12 times, mostly
in the national category.
Rudy himself did not grow up in
the meat industry, but was rather
introduced to it by a friend whose dad
was. He completed an apprenticeship
and the rest, as they say, is history. In
2005, Rudy located to Mbombela from
Gauteng to open the butchery at
Crossing SUPERSPAR. Rudy’s daughterin-law,
Susan, has taken over as the
butcher there, where she has won a
few prizes of her own, including a few
Cleavers.
Like her father-in-law, Susan adores
her job. “I really love what I do and
I’ve formed strong bonds with my
clients.” Both of them love mincemeat.
“You can do so much with it,” she says.
Rudy quips that if he had to eat one
thing for the rest of his life, it would be
mince for that very reason.
His son, though, not directly
involved with any butchery, works
as an account manager at Crown
National, which supplies all the spices
these butcheries use. The company
also produces Rudy’s own line of
boerewors, sold across the country
and one of his bestsellers. “I use my
own spice mix,” he explains. “I gave
them the recipe to
produce and sell
nationally.”
When asked his
favourite part of
his job, Rudy’s
answer is, “All
of it. I love my
job; I want to
come to work
every day. That’s
really something
special. Not a lot
of people get to
feel that way.” It’s
easy to see that he
enjoys working with
people. “It’s lekker to
work with people and to
chat with them. You have to
entice them with more than just
your product,” he says. Rudy believes
his service is one of the main reasons
his customers keep nominating him
for the Cleaver Award every year. “My
customers have become my friends. If
you offer them good service, the rest
is easy. You have to sort of sell yourself
to the public.”
His friendliness is almost infectious.
Throughout our visit, various people
phone him and some pop in to
his small office located in the back.
He jokes around with all of them,
even putting some of the calls on
loudspeaker. One caller asks him
where he is. “I’m at work, of course.
Where else would I be?” he laughs.
Rudy recently received his master’s
diploma in meat production from the
South African Meat Industry Company.
His meat comes from all over the
country. “Our beef is from Kameeldrift
in Pretoria, lamb from Fouriesdrift in
the Free State and our pork is local.”
This national champion knows that he
owes a lot of the butchery’s success to
his staff. “I’m so fortunate to have such
good people on my team. I mean,
just look at how clean this place is!” he
smiles.
Rudy’s boerewors can be found in
most stores. Rudy himself can be
found at The Grove SUPERSPAR.
Susan Oosthyse
“I love my
job; I want
to come to
work every
day. That’s
really
something
special.
Not a lot
of people
get to feel
that way”

Quinton Schoerie and Hennie van Zyl
The baking builder
It makes for an interesting day when you visit a building site and find yourself
discussing baking cakes with none other than the builder himself! Hennie van Zyl,
owner of Bamboo Rock Construction, speaks of his love of baking with almost as
much passion as when he speaks of building. Both started as hobbies.
Absalom Ndwandwe and Hennie van Zyl
28 Get It Lowveld April 2021
Hennie hails from Johannesburg
where he studied and worked as an
accountant before owning his first
business, a paint shop. After coming to
the Lowveld to continue his success as
an entrepreneur, he decided to manage
some revamping at his house. During
this, Hennie realised it was something
he wanted to do full-time and so
started what he affectionately calls his
“retirement”. He is as relaxed and happy
on the building site as he would have
been had he really been retired. He
beams with pride when he describes
his approach to building houses that
are as practical as they are beautiful.
BUCO sales representative and a regular
on-site, Quinton Schoerie tells of the
work he’s seen produced by Bamboo

Rock and it soon becomes clear
Hennie still enjoys solving complex
equations as he did when he was an
accountant. His greatest excitement
and challenge is building on nearly
impossible terrain! His latest project
is being built on a piece of land that
agents deemed unsellable due to
its rocky surface and steep incline. It
seems this will be one for the books.
Hennie’s pragmatic and mathematical
approach to drawing plans is what
makes him so excited about difficult
tasks. The plans he dreams up for every
new project is thought through to
the point where he even considers
how new residents would want to
arrange furniture. He aims to use space
effectively and economically, so as to
get as much house as possible. The
landscape and natural beauty of the
BUCO provides
Bamboo Rock
with great service
delivery and
competitive
prices
plot are carefully included into each
calculation. We can just imagine the
exquisite kitchen layouts you may
expect from this meticulous builder
who bakes.
Baking, however, is just one of his
kitchen-based hobbies. He also cooks
cuisine dishes and tells us that he buys
the groceries on behalf of his family.
Hennie is married to a well-known
music teacher, Nita, and has two adult
children. He’s also a grandfather to one
grandson, with another grandchild on
the way.
We talk to him about his suppliers and
he confidently names BUCO Nelspruit
as Bamboo Rock Construction’s main
one. There’s a great rapport between
him and Quinton and they joke as
they explain their relationship. BUCO
provides Bamboo Rock Construction
with great service delivery and
competitive prices. Special mention
is made of the service you receive
when visiting BUCO Nelspruit, as
the floor staff are helpful and welltrained.
Whether baking or building,
contemplating confectionary or
construction, Hennie is an man with
many talents and even a MBL degree
to his name. He seems to have
struck the ideal balance between
creating masterpieces of various
kinds, yet having fun doing it. That
he’s supported by a great supplier
like BUCO Nelspruit is just the cherry
SA this month. All sweet wild strawberry and rose essence,
citrusy bergamot and freesia, it’s optimism and happiness and
spontaneous celebrations wrapped up in a beautiful curvy bottle,
sporting the Kate Spade signature spade, and a pink and white box
that’s quite honestly too pretty to discard. This modern, fruityfloral
fragrance is a joyful scent that celebrates
women and their sense of individuality. It
launched with an upbeat campaign featuring
Maddie Ziegler (who stars in Steven Spielberg’s
movie adaptation of the musical West Side
Story), dancing with friends against the iconic
New York City skyline. But dance is universal …
so be it the New York or Joburg skyline, Cape
Town’s Table Mountain, Ballito’s breath-taking
beaches, we can celebrate the passion of the
fragrance and dance with Maddie, who shared
some of her secrets with us. Head on over to
getitnationalmagazines on Facebook, where
you can see the video, read about her dance
secrets, and where you’ll find the post about
this month’s Spoil. Enter there, and you could
be dancing away with a bottle of Kate Spade
New York fragrance and matching hand and
body lotion and a stunning Kate Spade tote bag.
