MESSAGE FROM
YAB DATO ’ SRI MOHD NAJIB
BIN TUN HAJI ABDUL RAZAK
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER AND DEFENCE MINISTER, MALAYSIA
The evolving security environment will see nations in the Asia Pacific
continuing to invest in self defence capabilities to ensure territorial
integrity and sovereignty while enhancing competence of national
agencies to deal with threats and the variety of weapons in the
various domains of land, sea and air.
The rapidly changing nature of warfare demands that capabilities
are built on leveraging the highest level of technology available so
that we remain prepared and will continue to have high operational
readiness in the years ahead. More than ever before, we need to
equip ourselves with capabilities that can respond to complex and
unpredictable challenges with flexibility and innovation.
Malaysia takes a long term view of her defence needs and force
planning, and is building a defence capability that gives us the best
value for the resources that we have invested.
In this context, our approach to defence procurement is clear and
we will no longer just purchase technology just off the shelf. We will
seek to have a greater industrial role in what we purchase. We
want our defence industry partners to offer value-added investments,
not just industrial offsets, and we want to explore as well, shifting
resources from military and commercial programmes to meet our
needs.
Over the years the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition and
conference has played an increasingly important role in promoting
not just the latest in defence and security technology and equipment,
but smart partnerships as well in local sourcing, component
manufacturing and evolving offset programmes.
DSA 2006, which celebrated its 10th anniversary, continued to build
on the momentum of the earlier exhibitions, setting several new
records, including being the biggest and most comprehensive event
of the 10 shows organised to date.
The response from the exhibitors at DSA 2006 was overwhelming
and up to 80 per cent of them indicated returning to the show in
2008. This is simply the best endorsement of the organisation and
quality of the show. I am confident that DSA 2008 will outdo its
predecessor while building on its reputation as the most sought
after defence trade exhibition by the global defence industry fraternity.
The Government of Malaysia and the Ministry of Defence is honoured
and pleased to play host to DSA 2008 - The 11th Defence Services
Asia Exhibition And Conference - which is to be held from 21 - 24
April 2008.
