In honour and recognition of a true free spirit 

Lorne Vernon Poier 

passed suddenly on March 21, 2021. Born 1945 in New 

Westminster BC, he is predeceased by parents Ed & 

Audrey, and twin brother Larry. Raised on the family 

farm, his work life included Fred Deeley Motorcycles, 

Longshoring, and Weyerhaeuser Princeton. After 

arriving in the Kootenays, he worked at Lang’s and 

Pharmasave. Lorne’s interest and passions always included 

music and motorcycles. As a musician, he was 

known as a 5-string banjo man. His motorcycle buddies 

often found him tinkering on his ‘64 Triumph. 

A genuine renaissance man, Lorne is remembered 

with love by his son Skye (Ali), brother Ron (Deolinda), 

partner Jake (Evelyn) Murfitt, the Crowley’s, 

cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She is missed

She loved cooking, 

gardening and sewing. 

In her later years she

beautiful quilts for her 

family and friends.

Adopting a rescue dog? Watch out for scams... 

March 23 wass National Puppy Day, an 

annual recognition of the unconditional love 

that puppies bring to our lives. However, it is 

also a timely reminder about the devastation 

caused by puppy scams, with many Canadians 

losing hundreds to thousands of dollars 

to the second riskiest scam in 2020. Since 

the start of this year, Better Business Bureau 

(BBB) has been receiving reports which share 

that scammers have taken a new approach to 

this fraud. If you are looking to rescue a furry 

friend, watch out for scams targeting people 

who want to adopt a dog from a shelter or 

rescue. Scammers are impersonating animal 

shelters or posing as individuals trying to 

find a new forever home for a dog. 

HOW THE SCAM WORKS You are 

searching online for a dog to adopt and find 

a new website for an animal shelter or an 

ad from an individual wanting to rehome a 

puppy. You message them for more information 

and receive a convincing, heart-tugging 

backstory. In one recent BBB Scam Tracker 

report, the victim shared that the scammer 

said she wanted to find a new home for her 

poodle after a car accident left her unable to 

care for the dog. In another case, the scammer 

claimed to be the Canadian Kennel Club. 

In this version of the puppy scam, the 

scammer may not charge for the dog. Instead, 

they ask for a refundable deposit to “hold” 

the puppy or request payment to ship the 

pet to your home. Most scammers ask you to 

pay through wire transfer, e-transfer or use a 

prepaid debit card or gift card. Although this 

scam mostly involves dogs, it can also include 

cats and other pets. 

After you make a payment, the problems 

start. One victim reported driving to the 

“shelter” to pick up their new dog, only to 

find no such address existed. “I called, and 

they texted me that they are coming down 

with the puppy. I asked them where and no 

answer. Finally, after 10 calls the phone was 

NOT accepting any calls! By then it was quite 

clear I am not getting the puppy AND I’m out 

$300.” 

In other versions of the scam, the con artists 

offer to ship the dog. However, you first need 

to pay for emergency vet visits, additional 

shipping fees, or even a COVID-19 test. The 

scammers ask for more money to resolve 

the problems, often promising to refund it 

after the pet is delivered. They may even try 

to create a sense of urgency by claiming that 

the pet will be euthanized if a payment is not 

made. Once they have your money, the scammers 

disappear and you realize the dog never 

existed. 

PANDEMIC iMPACT 

Since the start of the pandemic, the demand 

for pets has dramatically increased, with people 

seeking to ease the loneliness and tension 

of their prolonged time at home. Last year, 

pet and pet supplies were the riskiest online 

purchase scam category, with Canadians 

losing an average of $750 per person. While 

puppies remained the most common bait in a 

pet scam, 12% of pet scam complaints to BBB 

were about kittens or cats. 

HOW TO AVOID PET ADOPTION 

SCAMS 

Research the shelter. Visit BBB Scam 

Tracker to see if other people have submitted 

a report about the organization. Also do an 

internet search of the shelter with the word 

“scam” and “fraud” to see if anything concerning 

pops up in the results. 

Never buy or adopt a pet without seeing 

it in person. This is the best way to ensure 

you are not caught in a con. In light of the 

COVID-19 pandemic, most animal shelters 

will allow you to see the animal by appointment. 

You can also consider setting up a video 

call so you can see the pet for adoption and 

speak to the owner or a representative from 

the shelter. Since scammers are not likely to 

comply with the request, this may help you to 

avoid a scam. 

Do an internet search of the pet’s image. If 

you do find a puppy online, do a a reverse 

image search of the photo you see or receive. 

If you find multiple pet 

adoption sites using the 

same picture, it is probably 

a scam.

By order and direction of the Provincial 

Health Officer (PHO), new restrictions have 

been implemented across the Province of 

British Columbia for adult athletic activities. 

Effective March 29, 2021 at 11:59 pm all indoor 

adult group recreation classes at Regional District 

of Central Kootenay (RDCK) facilities 

are paused until April 20, 2021. Structured 

child and youth programs and sports will be 

permitted. 

“The RDCK and all our recreation partners 

will abide by all Provincial Health Orders and 

recommendations as the safety of our staff 

and the public will always be paramount,” said 

Joe Chirico, General Manager of Community 

Services. 

All classes will resume following the three 

week pause and any missed classes will be 

made up where possible. If classes cannot be 

made up, users will receive a pro-rated refund. 

Both high intensity group exercise and low 

intensity group exercise are included in the 

order. Reserved activities are permitted to continue 

at RDCK facilities, including swimming, 

individual fitness and indoor walking. 

Face masks are required in all RDCK facilities.

be reviewed regularly as new information and

There are five different soil 

types that gardeners and 

growers usually encounter. 

Each soil type is a combination 

of just three types of 

weathered rock particles that 

make up the soil: sand, silt, 

and clay. How these three particles 

are combined defines 

your soil’s type—how it feels 

to the touch, how it holds 

water, and how it’s managed, 

among other things. 

If you are turning over a patch 

of ground for the first time, 

you will need to know what 

SOIL GOAL - LOAM 

The type of soil that gardens and gardeners 

love is loamy soil. Loam is dark 

in colour and is mealy – soft, dry and 

crumbly – in your hands. It has a tight hold 

on water and plant food but it drains well, 

and air moves freely between soil particles 

down to the roots. The feel test for loam 

yields a smooth, partly gritty, partly sticky 

ball that crumbles easily. 

Although loamy soil is the ideal material to 

work with, don’t despair if you don’t have 

it in your garden – yet. Luckily, we can add 

the things we are missing...

Soil texture is an important factor in making 

nutrients available to the roots of the 

plant. So what nutrients do plants need if 

they are to grow vigorously?

1. SANDY SOIL 

Sandy soil is dry and gritty to 

the touch, and because the 

particles have huge spaces 

between them, it can’t hold

sandy soil in your palms, no 

ball should be formed and it 

crumbles through your fingers 

easily.

Strengthening access to local food 

New community-led projects in the 

Columbia Basin will support access to 

affordable, quality, local food for residents, 

with an emphasis on assisting 

those in need. Community kitchens, 

lawns-to-food initiatives and seed-saving 

libraries are just a few of the projects 

included in Columbia Basin Trust’s 

Local Food Access and Recovery 

Grants. 

“We continue to see increasing interest 

in enhancing community growing 

spaces, recovering and redistributing 

food and using improved technology in 

food production,” said Hannah Holden, 

Delivery of Benefits Senior Manager 

with Columbia Basin Trust. “These 

projects will help more Basin residents—especially 

those in need— 

access locally grown, nutritious foods 

from communal growing and processing 

spaces, and benefit from knowledge 

sharing opportunities.” 

Food access and recovery grants are 

part of the Trust’s work in local food 

production and access, a strategic priority 

as directed by Basin residents.

INTEGRATED RESOURCE USE 

Are you a multiple resource user? Are you a back country camper, 

prospector, rockhound, gold panner, hiker, mushroom picker, Quad 

rider, snowmobiler, berry picker, wood gatherer, mountain biker, hunter, 

trapper, fisherman or do you just simply enjoy the backcountry? 

Chances are if you are a rural resident, a native kootenay born, or new 

here, you probably do several of the above activities. It’s called lifestyle. 

In other words, a multiple resource user. We all fit into more than one 

category or another, that we all depend on natural 

resources in rural BC is a fact. 

This is the first step in recognising that wildlife (big 

game) values may take precedence over other resource 

issues and use. 

In order to multiply our wildlife heritage we should be 

managing our forest land base in such a way that will 

multiply our big game numbers. If Finland, Norway, 

and Sweden can, we can too. 

This is no easy task. Wildlife must be recognized by all 

users---its value and its use. We have a wildlife heritage, 

a resource worth perpetuating. This requires better 

stewardship and management of our crown lands. 

This also requires access to these lands for all users. 

The wilful and deliberate destruction of traditional forestry 

and mining roads is detrimental to protecting our 

forests, our wildlife resources, watersheds and denies 

citizens access to our crown lands for recreational and 

all other purposes. 

Our goal is to have our government adopt an integrated 

use philosophy, leading to increased big game 

numbers, and to maintain backcountry access. To accomplish 

this we require Integrated land use planning, 

including access management, forest thinning, fire 

management, predator management focused on big 

game multiplication leading to future government policy.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in June 

2013, performer and singer Pat Henman, 

was driving home on the highway 

with her 19-year-old daughter, Maia, 

when they were struck, head-on by a 

drunk driver. Although both survived, 

their physical injuries still remain, and 

the emotional toll on their well-being 

and that of their family has become a 

story that inspired Henman to share in 

the only way she knew how—on stage 

with songs that express the intensity 

and the joy of a life changing event. On 

April 9th Beyond the Legal Limit will 

premiere as a streamed, online theatrical 

performance with music based on 

the adaptation of Henman’s memoir by 

the same name.
