N E W SS T O R I E SSeegene develops world first COVID-19variant test capable of identifyingorigins of virus variants96South Korea’s biotechnology firmSeegene (KQ096530) said Monday itdeveloped the world’s first COVID-19diagnostic variant test, capable of screeningCOVID-19 and identifying multiplemutant variations in a single reaction.Seegene’s new variant test, the ‘AllplexSARS-CoV-2 Variants I Assay,’ can detectand differentiate virus variations, includingthose found to be more contagious andfatal.The new variant test not only detects COV-ID-19, but can also identify major geneticvariations that seem to have originatedfrom the UK, South Africa as well as otherregions including Japan and Brazil.Furthermore, it can pre-screen a suspiciousnew variant, providing insight on additionalvariations, also a key feature of Seegenetechnology.Seegene’s new product integrates at leastten of its proprietary technologies, includingmultiplex real-time PCR method ofmTOCE, which is the cutting-edge technologythat only Seegene can leverage.This innovative technology allows the testto detect a target specific spot where mutationoccurs, enabling precise detection anddifferentiation of the coronavirus as well asits mutated versions with a single tube ofreagent.Another key feature using Seegene’sunique technology is its endogenous internalcontrol that can verify entire testing processincluding proper sample collection.By utilizing Seegene’s big data auto-surveillancein silico system, the company isclosely monitoring and analyzing worldwidedatabase on COVID-19 and its variants,allowing it to quickly respond with productdevelopment.
Currently governments and health authoritiesaround the world are forced to relyon individual sample sequencing, whichis unsuitable to massive testing, to filterout virus variants from COVID-19 positivecases. An official from Seegene said its“new COVID-19 diagnostic variant test willsignificantly boost massive testing ability inits fight against the global-spread of mutantviruses when the time is key to controllingthe pandemic.”The current diagnostics relies on PCR testor rapid antigen/antibody test to diagnoseCOVID-19 infection or the existence of antibodies.But the current diagnostic methodshave limitations in screening virus variants,putting the brakes on effective epidemicprevention. Only PCR method can screenand identify the variants, but doing that in asingle tube of reagent had not been possibleuntil Seegene’s new variant test.According to the company official, Seegeneplans “to supply its COVID-19 varianttests to global organizations and governmentsas its priority.”The official added that the company willcontinue its work to “fulfill the duty as aleading global molecular diagnostics companyby closely working with health authoritiesaround the world.”97
