This has sent manyhealthcare providers into a panic as they scramble to protect freezers full oftemperature-sensitive COVID-19 vaccines, which need to be stored at extremelylow temperatures to prevent them from spoiling.In 2019, Grete Porteous, who works as an anesthesiologist and emergencymedicine specialist at Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center said thatpeople are so used to enjoying an uninterrupted supply of power that they areextremely surprised to know that healthcare facilities become fragile during poweroutages.A public health emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic only intensifies the risksof power outages. On top of this, hospitals, public health departments, and otherlocal health care facilities are already on limited resources and manpower. Manydoctors and healthcare providers are not used to treating patients with limitedpower and may have to navigate it on the fly when they are already running out ofresources. Shelters for people, such as warming centers in Texas, could potentiallyrisk spreading COVID-19 without power, even though these shelters are critical tokeep people from freezing during the winter.48
Apart from this, any storage facility for COVID-19 vaccines has to dedicateattention to the freezers keeping the dozens of vials safe in addition tomanaging power to keep their health records or oxygen supply intact andrunning. Since doses are still limited to date, any vial lost because of thesudden temperature change would mean that fewer people can be protectedfrom COVID-19.The stakes of a power outage for health care are always high. But when thesystem is already unstable and run ragged by one emergency, a secondstressor compounds the pressure to keep the lights on and the freezersrunning.In response to the issue, the Oregon Health Authority is starting to movevaccines to locations with power, although they are not disclosing which oftheir storage facilities are currently down. Kentucky are also making sure thatsites with COVID-19 vaccine storage units have contingency plans in place aspart of their storm preparations.Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear shared that every provider have agenerator ready on site or a partner who can provide alternative powersources right away.
