Empathy is a way to express your concerns and compassion to
people. You don’t need to be at a certain point in life to express
empathy; it simply shows your awareness towards people. A
child can empathize with their grandparents and a rich person
can empathize with a beggar. Moreover, empathy makes the
true colours of your heart shine and gives another person
motivation and energy to keep on going.
At the time of Blood Brothers, a play we read in Y7 English, the
wealth disparity of Liverpool was devastating. Some people
owned multiple factories while others less fortunate lacked basic
daily hygiene. What we take for granted now was of the highest
standard then, and even today, homeless children wander the
streets of the developing world, hungry, scared. That's why we
donate to charities; we are showing empathy. Like us, Edward
shows empathy towards the poor by offering Mickey a job in his
factory. He also empathizes with his friend by helping Linda
move houses after she has lived with Mrs. Johnston for 5 years.
Edward is a very good example of what friends will do for each
other if they empathize.
Edward, one of the main protagonists in Blood Brothers, has done many good deeds to his
friends and family that show his empathy towards people around him, like giving Linda a house
and giving Mickey a job at his factory. He also gave a lot of people (like the people in his factory)
jobs. I believe that he gives every poor person he knows personally (like Mickey) a job at his
factory. He is like the nice boss that I am sure some people have at work.
Blood Brothers main focus and target may be the wealth disparity of Liverpool, the acts of
empathy from certain characters are hard to ignore. I hope the world empathises more towards
the poor, like Edward did to his poorer friends and family.
