There are many reasons Gold Reef City Theme Park has just added the Pretoria News Readers’ Choice Best Amusement Theme
Park Award to its long list of consumer awards. Where else will you find 18 thrilling theme park rides, 13 additional interactive
attractions and now 10 more thrilling dedicated children's rides (opening 1 April), which means 23 rides to keep the smiles on
kids’ faces all day? Add to that the 4D Theatre experience, a full-on trampoline park, plus so much more. And here’s the best part,
these priceless moments of joy, laughter, fear and adrenaline cost just R200 per person. This is a new one-price-fits-all, super-value,
book-online-only experience, right on your doorstep. Whether you’re upside down on the Anaconda, hitting the trampolines,
taking ye olde selfie in the Gold Rush era at Memories, getting another shot of adrenalin twirling on the High Flying Maverick,
or taking it easy (sort of ) in a 4D theatre experience, Gold Reef City Theme Park is taking care of visitors' safety by enforcing strict
Covid-19 protocols. Tickets will no longer be available at the gate from April 1. Bookings can now be made online bit.ly/GRC-TP. For
The Mother of all Eating (… and the looting continues!) is a must see. Contemporary
and highly creative theatre directors Khayelihle Dom Gumede and Phala Ookeditse
Phala tackle 30-year-old timeless play The Mother of All Eating written by prolific playwright
Zakes Mda, which runs at the Market Theatre as part of the 45-year celebration
until April 11. Mda’s satirical masterpiece set in Maseru, Lesotho (and first performed
at the Sechaba Hall of the Victoria Hotel in Maseru in 1992), explores the debilitating
culture of corruption and greed known as ‘eating’. A culture which has become synonymous
with corrupt state officials who enrich themselves by abusing government
funds. Age recommendation 13. Showtimes are Tuesday to Saturday at 6pm and
Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are R90 for shows Tuesdays to Thursdays. R150 for Saturdays
and R130 for Sundays. To make block bookings, contact Anthony Ezeoke 011 832 1641ext
Romance. Friendship. Joy. And the possibility of happy endings. What more do you want in
a feel-good read? In the latest Katie Fforde (love her) release, Lizzie’s mother is keen for her
to have A Wedding in the Country, to a suitable chap chosen, obviously, by mum. And to
learn how to be a ‘good wife’, she’s sent off to cookery school in London. It’s 1963 … and
London is swinging! Lizzie cuts her hair, buys a mini dress and moves in with two great
friends. All of her mum’s plans are forgotten. She’s going to have fun … even if that entails
falling in love with someone who appears to be engaged to someone else. The perfect
read for a lazy Easter weekend. • Dodging doctor’s orders, 17-year-old Lenni, who’s living
in the terminal ward, joins an art class where she bumps into fellow hospital patient
Margot, a rebel-hearted 83-year-old from the next ward. Their bond is instant as they
realise that together they have lived an astonishing one hundred years. To celebrate
their shared century, they decide to paint their life stories … of growing old and staying
young, of giving joy and receiving kindness, of losing love and finding the person who
is everything. Fiercely alive, disarmingly funny and brimming with tenderness, The One
Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin unwraps the extraordinary
gift of life, even when it is about to be taken away, and revels in our infinite capacity for
friendship and love when we need them most. Keep the tissues at your side. • Was there
a single book club in the late 1990s which didn’t have The Notebook on the must-read
list? Impossible. And now, 25 years after its first release, Nicholas Sparks’ love story to end
all love stories is being released. It’s the story of Noah Calhoun, who returns from war and,
in an attempt to escape the ghosts of battle, sets his mind and his body to restoring an
old plantation home to its former beauty. But he’s haunted by memories of the beautiful
Allie, who he’d met years before … a girl who stole his heart at the funfair, whose parents
didn’t approve, a girl he wrote to every day for a year. When she turns up on his doorstep,
he has a chance to win her back. Small problem … she’s engaged to someone else.
You’ve seen the movie … you may have read the book … but read it (and weep) again
anyway. It’s not called a classic heartbreaker for nothing. And to celebrate the 25th
anniversary edition, we’ve got a special giveaway … three people can win a copy of The
Notebook plus a case of Fat bastard Rosé … your next book club
get-together’s going to be very special indeed. To enter, visit Get It National Magazines
on Facebook and enter on The Notebook’s post.
Forget the romance … we want an
adrenaline rush. And oh boy, do we have
that in these thrilling reads
Oh … we do love a Stephen Leather thriller. And if we put aside the fact that
it centres around billionaire and big game hunter Jon van der Sandt (the book
opens with him killing a massive bull elephant in Botswana), this is one hell of
a read. Van der Sandt is seeking revenge – while he’s shooting big game, his
family is holidaying at a luxury beach resort, where they’re killed by jihadist
terrorists. Van der Sandt wants vengeance, and he’s rich enough to arrange it.
He sends in a team of skilled ex-soldiers to bring the terrorists to him … but in
a case of mistaken identity, British doctor Raj Patel is taken hostage too. He’s
in war-torn Syria to treat the injured, and is only in the terrorist camp to help
some men who were hurt in an accidental explosion. Fortunately, the doctor
was trained as a soldier, and Van der Sandt gets more than he bargained for
when he kicks off his revenge hunting spree. With more than 40 books under
his belt, Leather’s not slowing down … The Hunting is a thrill-a-minute. • Allie
Reynolds is a former freestyle snowboarder, who spent five winters racing down
the mountains of France, Switzerland, Austria, and Canada. She’s taken her love
of snowboarding and made it the focus of her exciting debut novel, Shiver. A
dangerous natural environment, hugely competitive people, mind games and
sabotage make for a thrilling sport … and read. Five friends – all ex competitors,
who haven’t seen each other for a decade – meet for an out-of-season reunion
in a French Alps resort. But an ice-breaking game reveals they don’t really know
who arranged the reunion, or why. Things turn menacing really quickly … and it
appears all have secrets they’d rather not share from their time as competitors.
Including one involving murder. Loads of snowboard jargon, plenty of
suspense. • Another fave (this is turning out to be a smashingly good month for
us) … Gregg Hurwitz, and his hero character Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X. Evan’s
a foster home child, trained off-the-books as a government assassin. He’s been
forced into retirement but then gets a urgent plea from someone unexpected.
His mother needs help protecting a man who’s in the wrong place at the wrong
time. Running from an assassination team, he has no safe place to hide. Evan,
it appears, is his only hope. That’s until the secret group catches on to what
Evan is doing … and now Evan’s life is on the line, too. Prodigal Son is another
gripping thriller you can. not. put. down.
A missing bride. A blood-splattered
wedding dress. A guest list of
A-list celebrities. And a TV crew
documenting every extravagant detail.
Bring in the NYPD’s top team. James
Patterson and Marshall Karp’s NYPD
Red 6 – the sixth book in the series
– sees a bride kidnapped from her
dressing room. Fortunately, Detective
Kylie MacDonald and her plus-one,
Detective Zach Jordan, are guests, so
they’re right there in the thick of all the
drama. It’s all smart, fast writing with
loads of twists and turns – exactly what
keeps Patterson fans returning again
and again, making sure he stays on the
best-selling lists worldwide.
A scoop of the best
Some paint, others sculpt and they
churn. For those who don’t know,
Paul is a real guy. He grew up in
Johannesburg and started his icecream
journey after receiving an icecream
maker on his 21st birthday. He
started making a litre a day, with early
experiments of Nutella-swirled milk
chocolate and Oreo cookie chunks.
Hand-whisking the custard base, he
would make a huge mess in his parents’
kitchen, getting egg whites and sugar
everywhere. Paul’s ice cream became
available in small cafés and shops in
Johannesburg. He then partnered
with friend Josh Amoils to help run
the growing business. Today, Paul’s
Homemade Ice Cream is stocked in
over a hundred stores, and scoops are
available at 12 retail stores nationwide.
An elegant Bordeaux-style white
If you’re looking for a fine wine this month, you won’t do much better than the newly
released Constantia Glen TWO 2019, an elegant, white Bordeaux-style blend from the top
tier, family-owned Constantia boutique wine estate. This vintage has already garnered rave
reviews from leading local and international wine commentators. And no wonder. It’s a
blend of Sauvignon Blanc (67 per cent), which lends acidity and backbone, and Sémillon (33
per cent) that contributes to the waxy weight, richness and texture. Winemaker Justin van
Wyk suggests pairing this with dishes like grilled Kingklip with salsa verde, or lightly seared
green asparagus and buffalo mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto. It would also be great with
oak-smoked trout with dill and lemon crème fraiche and a cucumber pickle. Constantia Glen
TWO 2019 is available at a cellar door price of R290. Details: constantiaglen.com
Live life to the fullest
She strikes you as an introvert but as soon as the conversation gets going, you realise
she is a woman with many passions and loads of compassion. We catch up with
Ashleigh Thomas in her Brackenhurst home to speak about her life and one
Ashleigh is the third of four children,
all girls, and grew up in the South
of Joburg, matriculated from the
National School of the Arts, where she
specialised in ballet.
Dancing was one of her passions since
the age of four, and she continued to
dance right up to her 30s.
After school she finished a diploma in
Pilates and became a flight attendant,
spending her 20s and 30s between
South Africa and the Middle East.
She described her life as nothing short
of an adventure, and an adventure that
is continuous.
Stepping up
Ashleigh owns a Pilates studio, runs a
biscuit business on the side and also
spends a few nights a week as
a trauma counseller at the Netcare
Union Hospital.
This is what led us to Ashleigh, her
work as a counsellor to many families
who lost loved ones due to Covid-19-
related deaths.
‘Trauma counselling is my calling. I was
introduced to it by my close friend and
Pilates client Dalena, who runs a trauma
counselling team. She saw potential
in me and got me into the world
of counselling.
‘In actual fact, I think trauma
counselling chose me because not
everyone will willingly give up their
sleep to be with a person who is in
need of some compassion, yet I will
gladly step right in and do whatever I
can for anyone who is hurting.
‘The best part of being a counsellor is
being that small voice of reason to a
hurting family, bringing comfort and
making them feel like they matter. I
also love seeing the staff who I’m so
blessed to work alongside. This is an
amazing team who have made our job
so rewarding.’
But the flip side to that coin is also the
hardest part of her job as a counsellor.
12 Get It Joburg South • Alberton • Bedfordview • Greenstone • Modderfontein April 2021
of her side hustles as a trauma counsellor.
‘It is incredibly hard to deliver devastating news to a family and watch their lives
crumble and not being able to take that pain and grief away,’ she said.
‘However, knowing I am fulfilling my duty on earth makes trauma counselling so
special. It may even be something like having a revelation of what my calling really
is. It makes me feel like I am able to be useful, being able to give of my time. It sure
is something God has blessed me with.’
Driving force
With three jobs, whether it be day or night, there has to be something that
drives you?
‘Ha ha, yes, Pilates is actually my main hustle. I get the opportunity to transform
lives through movement on a daily basis. Pilates is great for pain management,
depression, injury rehab and back pain. I have an incredible team of clients who
keep me going.
‘My second hustle is The Biscuiteer ... come have a look in my kitchen, I’ll show you
what I do all night.’
And let’s just say, her biscuits are something out of this world, beautifully decorated
and so worth a try.
That, of course, brings us to the question: What are the challenges running three
jobs side by side?
‘Getting enough sleep. My days and nights are filled with so many things!’
But she would not change any of this for the world and tells you that ‘wherever
God leads her, be it as a Pilates instructor, counsellor or biscuiteer, I will follow’.
‘Life has taught me that it is important to find your passion. Get out and move
more. Your body was designed to move. Have a healthy hobby that can be used
as a constructive stress outlet, find the beauty in the detail, give without wanting
anything back.
‘Life is so fragile and short. One day when we leave this earth, our status, bank
accounts, trophies, achievements, pride, ego and all of that is left behind. The only
thing you take with you is your belief system,’ she said.
beautiful and tucked away.
• Married or single?
I am not married, I have two beautiful
my absolute joy. With the nature of
my work, it makes it difficult to share
more time with anyone, so I am quite
happy to be in the space I am in.
• Something very few people
where I was their flight attendant.
I was the only crew on board and
Flip the script on stress
Seventy per cent of us spend most of our day in a state of
stress. Our nervous systems are in a position of fight, flight or
freeze. With the constant pressure, the weight of perceived
expectations and the drive to be ‘always on’, many of us live with
an energy and nervous system that feels like a tightly clenched
fist, rather than an easeful, gently unfurling hand. And staying
shackled in this state of overwhelm and stress has far-reaching
consequences on our health. We often only pay attention when
illness strikes, having tuned out to all the messages our bodies
were sending us along the way. According to Nicky Rowbotham,
author of 7 Steps to Finding Flow, health whispers until one
day it screams. In the book, Nicky points out that while we can’t
avoid stress, we can deal with it differently and access better
health, energy and balance. And she shows us how to move from
being overwhelmed and ‘locked in’ by stress to a more easeful,
resilient and aligned life. Nicky, who’s worked with many highly
motivated and driven entrepreneurs and professionals looking
to fulfil their potential and live their best life – not just at work –
helps you learn what’s truly behind your stress, how it impacts
your energy, hormones and nervous system, how to move your
nervous system into a state of flow and how to make choices that
support your energy, by living in harmony with your body. Health
whispers until one day it screams. Let’s not wait for the scream!
A FORTNIGHT OF
FAB FITNESS HACKS
Always finding a reason not to exercise? Well, bye-bye excuses. These clever
fitness hacks by Robyn Lawrenson will help you to easily fit fat-burning moves
into your daily routine. Add one a day until you’re doing them all!
DAY 1
TEN BURPEES FOR THE SWEAR JAR
Nevermind R5 every time you swear,
do a round of burpees and you’ll
flatten the swearing curve and your
waistline real quick. Stand with your
feet shoulder-width apart and your
arms by your sides. Lower into a squat
position and place your hands on the
floor. Kick or step your legs back into a
plank position. Jump or step your legs
forward to return to a squat position.
Then return to the standing position.
DAY 4
WALK AND TALK
You know the saying, think on your
feet? It’s been proven we get better
ideas while we’re moving. So next
time you have a meeting, take it
while going on a walk. Or, instead of
sitting down, try standing up while
you talk on the phone – or better
yet, try pacing around to get some
extra steps. Standing while talking on
the phone can also help to improve
blood flow throughout the body and
can help to boost energy too.
DAY 5
TAKE THE STAIRS
It boosts heart health, builds
endurance, improves muscle strength
and mental health. Plus, taking the
stairs is way more Covid-19 friendly.
DAY 6
MAKE YOUR DAILY STEP GOAL
Download a real page-turner
audiobook on your phone and
make it a rule to only listen to it
when you walk.
18 Get It Joburg South • Alberton • Bedfordview • Greenstone • Modderfontein April 2021
DAY 2
WALL PUSH-UPS
There are certainly a lot of empty walls that could be used for some extra activity,
go ahead and try a wall push-up. It won’t make you too sweaty, but it will help
to activate muscles in your chest and back that can help to ramp up the calorie
burn. Start with 10 repetitions.
DAY 3
PLANK DURING COMMERCIALS
When a TV ad comes on, get off the couch and do a plank position. Use your
couch to prop up your feet, holding up your weight on your hands. Keep your
back straight, and hold. Aim to keep the position for 30 seconds.
Walk away a winner!
Running has just gone so much more high tech. No longer can you just pop
on any old trainers, do a couple of stretches and hit the road. Nope, now
it’s all apps and traction and strategic support. Which is all you get – and so
much more – when you invest in a pair of Under Armour Trainers. These are
from the Infinite 3 range … and are aimed at pro distance runners wanting
energy return and efficiency. And that, apparently, is exactly what UA HOVR
Infinite 3 delivers. That and real-time Form Coaching. So before you go on
your morning jog … read this. You can connect your shoes to UA MapMyRun
for personalised tips to help you run better. This app tracks and analyses your
running metrics to help make you a better runner.
We’ve got an R3000 voucher from Under Armour to give away. To enter, simply like
us on Facebook, Get It National Magazine, find our fitness post and tag a fellow
jogger. Entries close April 19.
Try this!
Ease sore muscles with
ginger. If you’ve overdone it
or your muscles are super sore,
ginger will go a long way to help
ease the pain. Ginger has great antiinflammatory
properties and eating
just 2 grams of ginger a day can help
reduce post-workout muscle soreness
by 25 per cent! Ginger also helps
relieve pain and can be added to
everything from stir-fries to
juices, tea, and smoothies
DAY 7
START SLOWLY
Start exercising by running for just
one minute. Add another minute
each day. With this method, you’ll be
running for a full 30 minutes by the
end of the month.
DAY 8
COACH POTATO NO MORE
We spend so much time watching
television and sitting on the couch,
so why not get some exercise while
doing this? Try 10 traditional squats or
couch squats. Sit on the edge of the
couch and stand up, squeezing your
glutes each time.
DAY 9
USE EVERYDAY OBJECTS
AS WEIGHTS
You don’t need to splurge on
dumbbells and kettlebells to work
out. See that full water bottle over
there? Pick it up. Get a good bicep
workout in by doing 20 lifts per arm.
Repeat as often as you like.
DAY 10
DON’T DRAG THOSE FEET
Burn some calories while you clean
your home or do your grocery
shopping by wearing ankle weights.
The added resistance requires you to
put more effort into your movement.
DAY 11
USE AN EXERCISE BALL INSTEAD
OF A CHAIR AT YOUR DESK
Make exercise balls your new favourite
piece of office furniture. Sitting on
one forces you to engage your core
because if you don’t, you’ll fall off!
DAY 12
BLOW-DRY YOUR HAIR WITH MAXIMUM EFFORT
Add wrist weights to your arms before you start blow-drying your hair or using
your flat iron – your arms will love the extra workout. Leave them on while you
do your makeup, and you could add an extra 30 minutes of total workout time to
your day!
DAY 13
CORE IN THE QUEUE
The next time you’re waiting in line (which is happening more and more these
days), stand up straight and tense your core muscles. Hold for 10 seconds and
release. Repeat until you get to the till.
AND … WELL DONE, DAY 14
PLIÉ FOR YOUR DINNER
While you wait for the food to cook, do pliés, using the kitchen counter as your
barre. With feet hip-distance apart and turned slightly outward, keep your back
straight while you bend your knees slowly, moving straight down and straight back
up. You shouldn’t feel tension in your hips, knees and ankles.
Moreish mangoes
Mango season is nearing it’s end so if you want to make these, best not linger.
Think braaivleis, warm autumn days…and mangoes!
While we still have a few warm days
and juicy South African mangoes are
in season, whip out the charcoal and
enjoy a traditional South African braai!
Like boerewors and baked potatoes,
no braai is complete without a salad,
and so long as mangoes are around
you can get creative with what you
serve up in that salad bowl.
And to top it all, mangoes are good
for you because it is high in vitamins
A, C, and biotin, and the mineral
potassium. This yummy fruit is also a
source of vitamins B1 and B6, and
free from fat, sodium and cholesterol.
So many more reasons to pack a
mango in your padkos, cooler,
or along with your braai pack
these holidays!
Mango cultivars that are available
right now
The green-skinned cultivars, which
remain green even when ripe and
ready to eat, Kent and Keitt, are on
the shelves right now and their
fragrant, sweet flesh is a sure winner
for any Easter treat.
The succulent Sensation is a heartshaped
fruit with yellow and red
colouring while Heidi, with her green
background and purple blush that
turns to red when ripe, is mild
and sweet.
Mango & yoghurt terrine
Transform this traditional Italian
panna cotta recipe with a refreshing
tropical twist.
Serves: 6 - 8
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Setting Time: 6 hours
Ingredients:
• 2 ripe mangoes, cheeks removed,
peeled, coarsely chopped • 1 x 500ml
low-fat plain yoghurt • 1 x 400ml can lite
coconut milk • Zest of one lemon
• 2 tablespoons runny honey
• 1/3 cup (80g) caster sugar • 3 tablespoons
cold water • 3 tablespoons (45g)
gelatine powder
Method:
Blend the mango until smooth. Place the yoghurt, coconut milk and sugar in a
medium saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring, for 2 - 3 minutes or until
heated through. Add the lemon zest, honey and caster sugar. Place the water in
a bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine and leave to soften for 5 minutes before
adding to the yoghurt mixture, stir to dissolve. Add the mango puree to the
yoghurt mixture and strain through a fine sieve into a jug. Place six 1-cup (250ml)
capacity metal dariole moulds on a baking tray, or lightly grease with flavourless oil
a 1 litre loaf tin. Pour the mixture evenly among the moulds or in the loaf tin. Cover
and place in the fridge for 6 hours or until set. Turn the terrine or individual Panna
cottas onto serving plates. If using a loaf tin dip briefly into boiling water to loosen
slightly before turning out onto a platter. Serve with extra diced mango, fresh mint
and sliced mango curls.
Tip: individual teacups also work well and don’t need to be unmoulded for serving.
• ½ cup tomato sauce • ½ cup bourbon
(optional – may replace with apple juice)
apple cider vinegar • 4cm ginger, grated
• 4 cloves garlic crushed • 2 tablespoons
Dijon mustard
8-10 minutes until slightly thickened and
sticky. Leave to cool. Pour over beef or pork
Reflect your style
There are so many great reasons to decorate
with mirrors. They instantly brighten and
open up a space, they reflect light, they
work in every room of your home. And if
you’re nervous about committing to art,
they’re a safe, timeless option.
And they’re so versatile. Hang them on the
wall, prop one up on the sideboard, or leave
it on the floor leaning against the wall.
When decorating with mirrors, the most
important factor to take into account is
what it’s going to reflect. Facing a window
is our first choice – a great way to bring the
outdoors in, and to add instant light. Similarly,
if there’s something in the room you love
and would like to emphasise – a gorgeous
artwork, a statement piece of furniture –
then simply position the mirror to reflect
it. Double the joy. But the same principle
applies when it’s facing something not
quite as attractive … so beware of placing it
opposite a boring wall or unattractive view.
Mirrors are perfect to give the room a focal
point. Above a mantle or sideboard
or the entrance hall table, all
you need to do is pop a sconce
or a piece of art on either side
(measured to within an inch of
their lives … exact symmetry is
everything), and voila.
Equally eye-catching is a wall of
different mirrors – various sizes,
shapes and finishes – providing
they are all the same style, it’s an
exceptional focus piece. Again,
precise measurement is essential,
and the rooms need to be fairly
uncluttered, or it may all get
a bit much!
In the case of mirrors, size really does
count. So think big, bigger, best. And
don’t be nervous to go oversize in
small rooms or spaces, either … they
create the illusion of space, so a small
room will appear to be much larger.
Long, full-length mirrors are also
great left on the floor and leaning
against the wall … stylish, elegant
and useful. Great in a bedroom, or in
a skinny passageway.
If not being hung – or leaned – at
a particular height for a specific
reason, hang them as you would
artwork … at eye level.
Modern, classic and antique,
crystal-clear glass or a smoky,
moody option … mirrors can add
style, or create one.
Understated,
classic, useful,
this leaning
mirror is a
marvellous
bedroom
option.
PLANT
Indoor plant of the month
We’re massive fans of the white anthurium, a lovely Easter
flower. As the blooms age, they often develop a soft green
tinge … really pretty. The combination of lush green
leaves and glossy white ‘flowers’ – which are in fact really
coloured leaves – lighten and brighten a room, improving
and purifying the air as well. Anthuriums thrive anywhere
with good light and a little water once a week. A good
plant for beginners, they forgive neglect and are almost
indestructible. And if you feed them with liquid fertiliser
once a month, except in winter, you’ll encourage them to
keep on pushing out flowers. Details: lvgplants.co.za
We’re planting…
Osteospermum Serenity Coral Magic is a really wonderful,
neat, compact plant, that’s always covered in flowers and is great
for tucking into the front of a border, and is a breathtakingly
beautiful patio plant. With its soft coral blooms with a glowing
inner ring and deeper pink or lilac centre, they’re at their best in
Autumn … and as the flowers mature they change colour, hence
the ‘magic’. We like it alone, but if you want some added colour, it
combines well with Osteospermum Blue Eyed Beauty – which
has a purplish-blue centre and yellow petals. Plant these in a
sunny spot, in well-composted soil that drains well. They are not
water-hungry but will bloom better if the soil is kept moist while
they are flowering. They are easy to grow, reliable and vigorous …
flowering a little less during the very cold months but bouncing
back with a great Spring flush. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
Eat your greens…
No space? No excuse. Baby cabbages are an excellent crop
for small gardens, or for growing in containers. Baby Green
Gonzales and Baby Red Primero are minis from Kirchhoffs, that
produce heads the size of a large fist. Great … since this means
they’re usually gobbled up after one meal, and don’t sit in the
refrigerator while you try to figure out another way to cook
them. They are crunchy, sweet, and mild in flavour, delicious
eaten raw in salads (fantastic in an Asian salad), as well as braised,
steamed, roasted, or stir-fried. Sow seed in trays, two weeks apart,
for a continual supply, and plant out when they have their first
true leaves. You’ll need to space plants 25cm apart. Cabbage
likes fertile, well-composted soil, full sun in winter, and regular
watering that keeps the soil consistently moist. Once heads
start to form, prevent aphids by spraying with Margaret Roberts
Organic Insecticide. They will be ready for harvest within 55 days.
Yum. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
Take off the gardening wellies, kick up your heels and
give your hard-working feet a refreshing dose of moisture
with this Burt’s Bees Peppermint Foot Lotion. The
cooling lotion will revive tired feet, and the glycerin and
coconut oil will soften rough calluses, leaving your feet
smooth and ready for the next day in the flower beds. 99
per cent natural, it’s R200 from takealot.com or Dis-Chem.
Your garden tasks
• For an abundance of indigenous
Spring flowers, sow Namaqualand
daisies now.
• Plant pansies, violas, primulas,
Iceland poppies, snapdragons,
and calendulas for Winter colour.
Feed once a week with a liquid
fertiliser for masses of flowers.
• Wait until Easter to plant your
daffodils, ranunculuses, and other
Spring bulbs.
• Fertilise Spring flowering
camellias, azaleas and hellebores
and water regularly
• This is the last month to fertilise
your roses and the lawn with 5:1:5
or Ludwig’s Vigorosa.
• Keep on sowing and planting
out Winter veggies – broad beans,
beetroot, broccoli, cabbage,
carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, peas,
spinach, and Swiss chard.
• Look out for healthy strawberry
plants … April is the right time to
plant them.
Spoil
April
Gasp. It’s ...
Kate Spade New York.
This may well be our sweetest Spoil ever! We’re dancing with
joy over the new (and first) Kate Spade New York fragrance
… a cheerful, feminine, sparkling scent which launched in
SA this month. All sweet wild strawberry and rose essence,
citrusy bergamot and freesia, it’s optimism and happiness and
spontaneous celebrations wrapped up in a beautiful curvy bottle,
sporting the Kate Spade signature spade, and a pink and white box
that’s quite honestly too pretty to discard. This modern, fruityfloral
fragrance is a joyful scent that celebrates
women and their sense of individuality. It
launched with an upbeat campaign featuring
Maddie Ziegler (who stars in Steven Spielberg’s
movie adaptation of the musical West Side
Story), dancing with friends against the iconic
New York City skyline. But dance is universal …
so be it the New York or Joburg skyline, Cape
Town’s Table Mountain, Ballito’s breath-taking
beaches, we can celebrate the passion of the
fragrance and dance with Maddie, who shared
some of her secrets with us. Head on over to
getitnationalmagazines on Facebook, where you
can see the video, read about her dance secrets,
and where you’ll find the post about this month’s
Spoil. Enter there, and you could be dancing
away with a bottle of Kate Spade New York
fragrance and matching hand and body lotion
and a stunning Kate Spade tote bag. Swoon only
after you’ve entered! Entries close April 25.
