DO ALL SPEAK IN TONGUES? - ALBERT ELISHA OBERDORFER - SAMPLE

From a strictly biblical perspective, the answer is clear. 'Yes and No.' Everybody who has received the Holy Spirit speaks in tongues as a sign. But not everybody also operates in the gift of tongues. In other words, in the bible, we find two types of speaking in tongues. - The accompanying sign of speaking in tongues, according to Jesus in Mark 16:17: "And these signs shall follow those who believe ... in my name ... they will speak with new tongues ..." - And the gift of tongues, according to Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:10-11: "To one is given ... to another different kinds of tongues .. one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills." The word edify means ‘to build up.’<br />

So, as James said, when we pray in<br />

tongues, we build ourselves up.<br />

But this doesn’t help others.<br />

When we speak in tongues (the sign of<br />

tongues), we don’t speak to people.<br />

They don’t understand us.<br />

It’s not for them.<br />

We speak to God.<br />

This is what it says in verse 2,<br />

[1 Corinthians 14:2]<br />

... he who speaks in a tongue does not<br />

<strong>SPEAK</strong> TO men but to GOD, for no<br />

one understands him; however, in the<br />

spirit he speaks mysteries.<br />

But, when we speak prophetically, in a<br />

language that people can understand, we<br />

edify people.<br />

Or exhort them.<br />

Or comfort them.<br />

This is what it says in verse 3.<br />

[1 Corinthians 14:3]<br />

But he who prophesies <strong>SPEAK</strong>S<br />
