A FLAME FOR EVERY HEAD - ALBERT ELISHA OBERDORFER - SAMPLE

Have you already received the wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit since you became a believer in Jesus Christ? If not yet, find out how you can easily receive Holy Spirit today—even if you have already tried to receive many times before. There can be only one of two reasons why you haven't received the Holy Spirit yet. 1) You may not yet clearly understand that there is a Holy Spirit and why we can receive Him. You may be in the same position as some disciples from Ephesus in Acts 19. When Paul met them, he asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "We haven’t heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." 2) Or, you may be in the same position as some believers from Samaria in Acts 8. They had "believed" and "they were baptized." But still they hadn’t received the Holy Spirit yet at that point. So then Peter and John came and "prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit." And then they did. Now, it's your turn. Whatever position you are in—your time to receive Holy Spirit has come!

Receive the Holy Spirit
Today—as in the Book
of Acts
A FLAME FOR EVERY
HEAD.
[Acts 2:1-4]
1 AND WHEN the Day of Pentecost
had fully come, they were all with one
accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon
each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
This is how Reinhard
Bonnke interprets this
passage.
Straight to the point.
There were 120 people
in the Upper Room.
3

Some must have counted the heads, since
one flame landed “on each of them.”
If you have a head, God has a flame for
you.
Right now, His count includes you.
“You shall receive power ...” (Acts 1:8).
Just imagine, your head becomes a
landing strip for the fire of the Holy Spirit.
He lands and abides—never to take off
again. 1
This is why I have written this book.
That you—too—may receive this most
wonderful promise.
The promise of the Father.
The gift of the Holy Spirit.
So that you can become a flame of fire.
A burning one.
4

In this book, I will lay the scriptural
foundations for receiving the Holy Spirit.
As we see it in Acts.
The book of Acts hasn’t ended yet.
The players in Acts have come and gone.
Today, God is looking for people who
will carry the Holy Spirit’s fire in this
generation.
Are you such a one?
You may have experienced difficulties
receiving the Holy Spirit in the past.
Perhaps it was due to your theology.
Or perhaps, you have never heard that
there is a Holy Spirit that you can
receive.
5

6

ONLY TWO REASONS.
IN ACTS, the picture is clear.
There can only be two reasons why you
haven’t received the Holy Spirit yet.
1) You may be in the same position as
some disciples from Ephesus in Acts 19.
When Paul met them, he asked them,
[Acts 19:2]
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?”
They said to him,
[Acts 19:2]
“We have not so much as heard
whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
So you may not yet clearly understand
that there is a Holy Spirit and why you
can receive Him.
2) Or, you may be in the same position as
some believers from Samaria in Acts 8.
They had
“believed”
[Acts 8:12]
7

and
“were baptized.”
[Acts 8:12]
But they hadn’t received the Holy Spirit
at that point.
Because they were still under the
influence of a spirit of witchcraft.
They needed help.
So then Peter and John came and
[Acts 8:15]
“prayed for them, that they might
receive the Holy Spirit.”
You also may need help to receive the
Holy Spirit.
Whichever position you are in—your
time to receive Holy Spirit has come!
TESTIMONIES.
OVER THE years, I have had this
privilege, as well.
I could help hundreds of believers to
receive the Holy Spirit.
I have written another book that includes
testimonies of how people in different
parts of the world, under different
circumstances, received the Holy Spirit.
It is called ‘Holy Spirit Accountant: 18
Exciting Real-life Testimonies of How
Believers Received the Holy Spirit—Like
in the Book of Acts.’
It compliments this book.
This book—A Flame for Every Head—
isn’t about testimonies.
Testimonies are valuable.
But they serve a specific purpose.
They inspire.
They lift our expectations.
Because what God has done once, he is
willing to do it again.
This is what the word testimony means—
to ‘do again.’
But to convince people that they can
receive the Holy Spirit—as we read about
in the book of Acts—more is needed than
a testimony.
13

14

A SCRIPTURAL
FOUNDATION.
AND THAT is the purpose of the book.
It is to convince you—from scripture.
In my experience, I have found that this
is very necessary.
To build a solid scriptural understanding
of a subject.
This then—and this only—imparts the
necessary faith to people who otherwise
might be on the borderline.
Are you unsure if you, too, can also
receive the Holy Spirit?
Like we read about in the book of Acts?
Or, do you have some other difficulties
receiving the Holy Spirit?
Because you don’t quite understand or
because you have doubts about certain
things?
Then this book is for you.
We will explore both cases and lay a
solid scriptural foundation for how you
can receive the Holy Spirit.
15

First.
And then—I am confident—you are
going to receive the Holy Spirit.
As the Ephesians in Acts 19.
In that case, Paul helped them.
They needed understanding.
And then they also needed to get truly
baptized.
Or as the Samarians in Acts 8.
In that case, Peter and John helped them.
They laid hands on the Samarians, and
then they were set free from the spirit of
witchcraft, which is a religious spirit.
So they could receive the Holy Spirit.
I will do my best to clarify specific
issues.
And once you are convinced—once you
believe—then it will be easy for you to
receive the Holy Spirit.
This book is also for one more group of
people.
Perhaps, you have received the Holy
Spirit yourself already.
So now you have this desire to help
others to receive the Holy Spirit as well.
16

Like Paul.
Or like Peter and John.
Then this book will give you valuable
insights and tools on how you can do
that.
17

18

HOLY SPIRIT
ACCOUNTANT.
THERE’S also one more reason why I
have written this book.
In 2017, I was at the Harvest School in
Pemba, Mozambique.
There I received the following prophecy
from David Wagner.
“Lord, I thank you for this Holy Spirit
accountant.”
“Here is what he showed me.
Everything was decent and in order.
Everything was in like a row. I saw all
of these ledger sheets; I saw all of these
things, orderly. Everything made sense.
I feel like the Lord said that he is going
to cause you to make sense out of
revelation. What won’t make sense to
other people will make sense to you.
... You have an understanding that was
beyond their understanding.”...
What David Wagner didn’t know at that
time was this.
19

I had already completed a draft of this
present book.
Today—as in the Book
ALBERT ELISHA OBERDORFER
This topic had been on my heart for so
many years.
I’ve always had this deep desire to help
people receive the HolySpirit—ever since
I have come to the Lord.
I have found this.
Most of the time, I needed to show
believers what the word of God exactly
says about this topic.
Before I could then pray with them to
receive the Holy Spirit.
20

Or first, baptize them, and then pray for
them.
Because faith is imparted to us by the
word of God.
We need someone under the anointing
of the Holy Spirit who has the spiritual
authority to talk about a topic to preach
to us.
This is what this book is about.
In this book, I’ d like to lay an orderly
scriptural foundation.
I’d like to share with you simple insights,
from the word of God.
That will impart faith to you.
That will help you to get into a mode of
receiving.
And then, it will be time to act on your
faith.
And then you will be able to receive the
Holy Spirit.
Easily.
Even if you have tried to receive Holy
Spirit many times before.
PART 1:
HAVE ALL
WHO FOLLOW
TEACHINGS
OF THE BIBLE,
AUTOMATICALLY
RECEIVED THE
HOLY SPIRIT?
29

1 THE CASE OF THE
EPHESIANS.
IN ACTS 19, we find the first category of
people.
The Ephesians.
The Ephesians hadn’t received the Holy
Spirit because they did not understand
much yet.
But this was not their fault.
They hadn’t heard the clear gospel of
Jesus Christ yet.
From the right preacher.
That’s someone who is filled with the
Holy Spirit.
But then they met Paul.
[Acts 19:1-2]
1 And ... Paul ... came to Ephesus. And
finding some disciples
2 he said to them, “DID YOU RECEIVE
THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN YOU
BELIEVED?”
31

Paul was sharp in the spirit and full of
love.
When he came to Ephesus and found
some disciples, he must have recognized
something.
That these people didn’t have the Holy
Spirit yet.
So he felt moved by the Holy Spirit to
help them.
And Paul came straight to the point.
He asked them.
Directly.
[Acts 19:2]
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?”
The Ephesians were already disciples.
They were learners. That’s what the word
‘disciple’ means.
The Greek word for disciple is ‘mathete.’
A ‘mathete’ is an apprentice who learns
from a master.
So these Ephesians already followed
some teachings.
But they had not received the Holy Spirit
yet.
32

This is clear from the way they answer
Paul’s question.
They say,
[Acts 19:2]
“We have not so much as heard
whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
This shows us that they had not heard the
right gospel message yet.
Because the full gospel message should
include this!
That you can receive the Holy Spirit
because of what Jesus has done.
This is Christianity 101.
Basic apostolic doctrine.
We see that in Acts 2.
On the day of Pentecost, Peter received
the Holy Spirit.
Then he preached Jesus.
Then his listeners believed.
Then they asked him,
“What shall we do?”
And then Peter tells them,
[Acts 2:37]
33

[Acts 2:38]
“Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for
the remission of sins; AND YOU SHALL
RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT.”
This is what the apostles were preaching
and practicing.
In the book of Acts.
But the Ephesian disciples had not heard
about this yet.
They said,
[Acts 19:2]
“We have not so much as heard
whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
That is why they could not receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit, yet.
(So often, when dealing with people, it
is necessary to go back to the basics.)
But then the Ephesians met the right
man.
Paul.
And he helped them to believe.
By preaching the full gospel to them.
34

(And then they get also baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ.)
And then they also received the Holy
Spirit.
How do we know this?
From Paul’s letter.
35

2 HEARING COMES
FIRST.
IN PAUL’S letter, in chapter 1, he
reminded the Ephesians how they had
come to the Lord.
He says,
[Ephesians 1:12]
... WE WHO FIRST TRUSTED IN
CHRIST should be to the praise of His
glory.
Paul is first talking about himself.
He says, “We first trusted in Christ.”
And then he talks about the Ephesians.
He says,
[Ephesians 1:13]
IN HIM YOU ALSO TRUSTED ...
When was that?
When did the Ephesians trust in Christ?
Was it before Paul came to them, and
preached to them?
37

No.
Paul says,
[Ephesians 1:13]
In Him you also trusted, AFTER YOU
HEARD the word of truth ...
The Ephesians began trusting in Christ
after they heard the right message from
Paul.
Before Paul came to them, they didn’t
understand the gospel yet.
They didn’t trust in Christ yet.
So what message did they hear from
Paul?
They,
[Ephesians 1:13]
heard THE WORD OF TRUTH ...
What kind of truth?
[Ephesians 1:13]
In Him you also trusted, after you
heard the word of truth, THE GOSPEL
OF YOUR SALVATION ...
So, they heard the gospel of their
salvation.
38

The good news of what Jesus has done
for us.
(We will examine the gospel in more
detail in CHAPTER 9: CHRIST CRUCIFIED.
We will find out what exactly the gospel
is, according to Paul.)
And then what happened? Once the
Ephesians believed? Because they had
heard the right message? (From the right
messenger, Paul?)
Paul says,
[Ephesians 1:13]
in whom also, HAVING BELIEVED,
YOU WERE SEALED WITH THE
HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE ...
This is it.
Once the Ephesians believed,
they were sealed with the
Holy Spirit!
But when they were
sealed with the Holy
Spirit, it wasn’t a procedure
that happened unnoticeably!
This is like saying, “I got baptized in
water, but I can’t really remember when
it happened.”
39

No, when they were sealed with the Holy
Spirit, it was a noticeable event.
(We will look at this whole passage in
Acts 19 in a minute.)
So, when they received the Holy Spirit,
this was when God approved them.
Not man.
But God!
God sealed them with the Holy Spirit.
He put his stamp of approval on them.
Because the Holy Spirit is
[Ephesians 1:14]
... the GUARANTEE of our inheritance
...
Before Paul came to them, they didn’t
have the Holy Spirit yet.
But once they had heard the right
message from the right messenger (Paul)
and acted on it, they received the Holy
Spirit.
What do I mean by acted on it?
40

41

3 ACTING ON YOUR
BELIEF COMES
SECOND.
PAUL was very skillful.
He wanted to help the Ephesians receive
the Holy Spirit.
But he didn’t just try to lay hands on
them and say, “Now, receive the Holy
Spirit.”
He first asked them questions.
He first established the topic of their
conversation.
His first question was,
[Acts 19:2]
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?”
And they answered,
[Acts 19:2]
“We have not so much as heard
whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
43

So they admitted that they had a need.
They admitted that they didn’t know
anything about receiving the Holy Spirit.
They admitted that they even didn’t know
that there was such a thing as the Holy
Spirit that they could receive.
Then, Paul wisely asked them another
question.
[Acts 19:3]
“Into what then were you baptized?”
Why did he ask them that?
He wanted to find out if the Ephesians
had understood the gospel.
And, he wanted to know if they had also
acted on the gospel.
In Acts, when people believed the gospel,
they always acted on the gospel.
They got baptized.
In Acts, believing the gospel and getting
baptized always go together.
(In CHAPTER 11: IN ACTS, WHEN
PEOPLE BELIEVED THE GOSPEL, THEY
GOT BAPTIZED, we will look at this in
more detail.)
In Acts, there are dozens of scriptures for
that.
44

Here is just one that shows this principle
very clearly.
In Acts 8.
It says,
[Acts 8:12]
But WHEN THEY BELIEVED Philip as
he preached the things concerning the
kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN
WERE BAPTIZED.
All the apostles and believers in Acts
practiced this doctrine.
Paul, as well.
For example, when he was in Corinth.
[Acts 18:8]
Then Crispus, the ruler of the
synagogue, believed on the Lord with
all his household. And many of the
Corinthians, hearing, BELIEVED AND
WERE BAPTIZED.
Believing and getting baptized always
goes together.
45

That’s why Jesus said,
[Mark 16:16]
“He who BELIEVES AND IS BAPTIZED
shall be saved.”
So that is why Paul asked the Ephesians,
[Acts 19:3]
“Into what then were you baptized?”
They answered,
“Into John’s baptism.”
[Acts 19:4]
This also shows that these Ephesians had
not clearly understood the gospel of Jesus
yet.
Because when we get baptized, we get
baptized in the name of Jesus.
The baptism unto Jesus is a baptism
unto His death and burial.
So the Ephesians didn’t understand this
yet.
So what does Paul do next?
He preaches to them.
The gospel of Jesus.
The gospel of salvation.
46

(We have read about this in Ephesians
chapter one.)
So Paul pointed them to Jesus.
And then, when they believe they get
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
And then Pauls lays his hands on them.
Not before.
And then they receive the Holy Spirit.
This is what it says in Acts.
[Acts 19:4-6]
4 Then Paul said, “John indeed
baptized with a baptism of repentance,
saying to the people that they should
believe on Him who would come after
him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on
them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke with tongues and
prophesied.
(We will look at what the gospel is in
more detail a bit later.)
(And we will also talk about baptism in
more detail a bit later.)
47

(And we will also talk about receiving
the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues a
bit later.)
You may have a lot of questions that
demand an answer.
We will, by the grace of God, answer
your questions as we go along.
But for now, we have established that
people can be disciples but not have
received the Holy Spirit yet.
Like these Ephesians.
But then Paul came and helped them.
He first made sure that they realized they
needed help.
He first identified the problem.
They had not received the Holy Spirit yet.
Then he figured out how much they
understood.
He found out that they didn’t really
understand the gospel.
And then Paul preached to them.
And then they responded.
By getting baptized.
And then Paul laid hands on them.
And then they received the Holy Spirit.
48

I have seen this process so often.
If you are in this position, I have good
news for you.
You can receive the Holy Spirit easily.
Continue this journey with us.
Get more understanding.
And then act on your faith.
And receive.
So in Acts 19, this is the first category
of people who haven’t received the Holy
Spirit yet.
But there another category of people.
In Acts 8.
If you haven’t received the Holy Spirit
yet, and you don’t belong to the first
category, you may belong to the second
category.
The category of the Samarian believers in
Acts 8.
49

[Acts 8:5,12-14]
5 Then Philip went down to the city of
Samaria and preached Christ to them.
...
12 But when they believed Philip as
he preached the things concerning the
kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, both men and women were
baptized.
13 Then Simon himself also believed;
and when he was baptized he
continued with Philip, and was amazed,
seeing the miracles and signs which
were done.
14 Now when the apostles who were
at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God, they sent
Peter and John to them ...

4 THE CASE OF THE
SAMARIANS IN ACTS
8.
THE SAMARIANS, at one stage, also
hadn’t received the Holy Spirit yet.
Even though everything had been right.
The message had been right.
The messenger had been right.
They had believed.
They got baptized.
But still—at this stage—they hadn’t
received the Holy Spirit yet.
So what had happened?
And how did they finally received the
Holy Spirit?
(Read Acts 8:5,12-14; see previous page.)
So here we have the Samarians.
As we’ve said, they heard the right
message.
51

[Acts 8:12]
... the things concerning the kingdom
of God and the name of Jesus Christ ...
They heard it from the right person
(Philip). We know that Philip was an
evangelist and a man
[Acts 6:5]
full of faith and the Holy Spirit ...
They believed and got baptized in water
in the name of Jesus.
[Acts 8:12]
But when they believed Philip as he
preached ... both men and women were
baptized.
And there is another ‘but.’
They had not yet received the Holy Spirit
at that time.
This what the bible explicitly says
[Acts 8:16]
AS YET [THE HOLY SPIRIT] HAD
FALLEN UPON NONE OF THEM.
They had only been baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus.
“As yet.”
52

Not yet.
They had only been baptized.
But they had not yet received the Holy
Spirit.
The apostles in Jerusalem heard about
this.
So what did they do?
They send Peter and John to Samaria.
And what did Peter and John then do?
Pray for them that they might receive the
Holy Spirit.
So this was an important issue then.
(That believers really receive the Holy
Spirit.)
And it is still an important issue today.
Without the Holy Spirit, all we have is
religion!
So Peter and John then prayed for these
water-baptized believers.
And they laid hands on them.
And then, what happened?
They finally received the Holy Spirit!
Yes, Jesus!!!
We read,
53

[Acts 8:17]
Then [Peter and John] laid hands on
them, AND THEY RECEIVED THE
HOLY SPIRIT.
The word of God says it very clearly.
The Samarians received the Holy Spirit
when Peter and John laid hands on them.
The next verse also says,
[Acts 8:18]
And when Simon saw that through the
laying on of the apostles’ hands THE
HOLY SPIRIT WAS GIVEN ...
So before that, the people had not
received the Holy Spirit yet.
Only at that point, they received.
And Simon could see what happened.
You will sometimes hear this statement.
“Every believer has the Holy Spirit ‘in’
them.”
It is a well-meaning saying.
But obviously, from the scriptures that
we have just read, that is not the case.
The Samarians heard the right message.
54

Philip preached to them
[Acts 8:12]
... the things concerning the kingdom of
God and the name of Jesus Christ ...
The Samarians believed. Yes.
Because of that, the Samarians got
baptized. Yes.
But ...
But still, they had not received the Holy
Spirit yet at that point.
But why?
Because they were still under the
influence of witchcraft.
55

5 A WITCHCRAFT
SPIRIT.
THE SAMARIANS believed and got
baptized.
But still, they did not receive the Holy
Spirit straight away.
Because they were under the influence of
a contrary spirit.
A spirit of witchcraft.
They had been under the influence of
Simon, the sorcerer for a long time.
He
had astonished them with his
SORCERIES for a long time.
[Acts 8:11]
So what is a witchcraft spirit?
It’s a demonic spirit.
It originates from Satan.
It causes people to think along the lines
of good and evil.
57

It is thinking that you can earn your way
to God.
That you can qualify yourself.
This is what Paul says to the Galatians,
[Galatians 3:1-2]
1 Oh foolish Galatians! Who has
bewitched you that you should not
obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus
Christ was clearly portrayed among you
as crucified?
2 This only I want to learn from you:
DID YOU RECEIVE THE SPIRIT BY
THE WORKS OF THE LAW, or by the
hearing of faith?
We can’t receive the Holy Spirit based on
our goodness.
Nobody can.
That is the baseline.
If we don’t understand this, we are
missing the whole point of why we need
Jesus.
We can only receive the Holy Spirit
because of what Jesus has done for us.
Because Jesus was crucified for us!
58

Nothing else can qualify us.
Period.
If we don’t get this point, we miss
everything!
That is why witchcraft is so deceptive!
Witchcraft will want you to believe that
you can qualify yourself.
And by doing so, you take your eyes off
Jesus.
The aim of witchcraft is to obscure the
work of the cross.
That is why Paul says to the Galatians:
“You guys are fools!”
“Who has bewitched you,”
59

[Galatians 3:1]
... before whose eyes Jesus Christ
was clearly portrayed among you as
crucified?
I have found that people can receive the
Holy Spirit easily.
Once they clearly understand what Jesus
has done for them on the cross.
(We will look at this in CHAPTER 9:
CHRIST CRUCIFIED.)
60

Before we continue, one thing is
essential.
We should be clear about our
terminology.
Otherwise, I may be using some words
and mean one thing.
And, you may be using the same words
but mean a different thing.
So when I say, “Have you received the
Holy Spirit?” let me clarify what I mean.
61

62

PART 2:
FIRST, LET’S
CLARIFY SOME
TERMINOLOGY
63

6 WHAT DOES IT MEAN
‘TO HAVE RECEIVED
THE HOLY SPIRIT’?
IN EPHESUS, Paul says,
[Acts 19:2]
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?”
But what did he mean by this?
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God.
In 1 Corinthians, Paul says,
[1 Corinthians 2:12]
Now we HAVE RECEIVED, not the
spirit of the world, but THE SPIRIT
WHO IS FROM GOD ...
The “Spirit who is from God” is the Holy
Spirit.
This is clear.
But what does it mean ‘to have received’
65

the Holy Spirit?
In chapter 6 of 1 Corinthians, Paul says,
[1 Corinthians 6:19]
... do you not know that your body is
the temple of the HOLY SPIRIT WHO
IS IN YOU, whom you have from
God...?
Paul is talking to the Corinthians.
These people had already received the
Holy Spirit.
Paul says, don’t you know that your
[1 Corinthians 6:19]
... body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
who is IN you ...?
So this means that when you have
received the Holy Spirit, then the Holy
Spirit is in you.
So I could ask you, “Did you receive the
Holy Spirit when you believed?’
Or I could ask you,
“Is the Holy Spirit already in you?”
Both mean the same thing.
66

67

7 THE HOLY SPIRIT
‘WITH YOU’ VERSUS
THE HOLY SPIRIT ‘IN
YOU.’
THERE IS a difference between the Holy
Spirit being with a person, and the Holy
Spirit being in a person.
This is what Jesus said. In John 14.
In this passage, Jesus talks about the
Holy Spirit.
[John 14:15-18]
15 “If you love Me, keep My
commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and He
will give you another Helper, that He
may abide with you forever—
17 The Spirit of truth [=the Holy
Spirit], whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows
Him; but you know Him, for HE
DWELLS WITH YOU AND WILL BE
IN YOU.
69

18 I will not leave you orphans; I will
come to you.”
Jesus said this to His disciples before the
cross.
We know that the Holy Spirit couldn’t
come before the cross yet.
While Jesus was with His disciples, the
Holy Spirit was with them.
But not yet in them.
That’s why Jesus says that He would pray
the Father.
And then the Father would give them the
Holy Spirit to “abide with them forever.”
The world would not be able to receive
the Holy Spirit —but His disciples would.
Because the Holy Spirit was already with
them.
[John 14:17]
“... He dwells WITH you ...”
And then the Holy Spirit would be in
them. And He
“... will be IN you ...”
[John 14:17]
So there is a difference between the Holy
70

Spirit being with someone, and the Holy
Spirit being in someone.
When did the Holy Spirit come to be in
the disciples for the first time?
It was after Jesus was glorified. On the
day of Pentecost.
So the first disciples received the Holy
Spirit for the first time on the day of
Pentecost.
That is when the Holy Spirit came to be
in them.
This is what Jesus promised.
In John 7.
[John 7:37-39]
37 On the last day, that great day of
the feast, Jesus stood and cried out
saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come
to Me and drink.
38 HE WHO BELIEVES IN ME, as the
Scripture has said, out of his heart will
flow rivers of living water.”
39 But THIS HE SPOKE
CONCERNING THE SPIRIT, WHOM
THOSE BELIEVING IN HIM WOULD
RECEIVE; for the Holy Spirit was not
yet given, because Jesus was not yet
glorified.
71

Jesus said this before anyone could
receive the Holy Spirit.
Verse 39 says,
[John 7:39]
the Holy Spirit was NOT YET given,
because Jesus was NOT YET glorified.
So this was before Jesus’ death, burial
and resurrection.
While Jesus was here on earth, nobody
could receive the Holy Spirit yet.
Nobody could yet have the Holy Spirit
live in them yet!
Only after Jesus was glorified.
Then believers could receive Him.
So when did the first disciples receive the
Holy Spirit?
On the day of Pentecost.
Before that, the Holy Spirit was with
them, but not yet in them.
You might be in the same position.
The Holy Spirit is with you. You may
have had experiences and encounters
with the Holy Spirit.
But is the Holy Spirit already in you?
72

73

He commanded them not to depart from
Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of
the Father, “which,” He said, “you have
heard from Me; for John truly baptized
219
74

8 WHEN YOU ARE
BAPTIZED WITH THE
HOLY SPIRIT, THE HOLY
SPIRIT COMES TO BE
IN YOU.
WHAT DOES it mean to be baptized
with the Holy Spirit?
It means that when you are baptized
with the Holy Spirit, then the Holy Spirit
comes to be in you.
The word ‘to baptize’ comes from the
Greek word ‘baptismo.’
It meant ‘to immerse’ or ‘to dip.’
In the past, the word ‘to baptize’ was
commonly used in a particular context.
When a fuller dyed clothes, he would
take a piece of cloth.
And then, he would dip (or baptize) that
cloth into a container with dye (color).
Imagine you have a white T-shirt.
75

RECEIVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD
are in your spirit connected again to the
And have a container with red color.
Spirit of God.
Before the disciples of Jesus received the
Holy Spirit, Jesus foretold what would
And then you baptize (you immerse, or
happen to them.
you And dip) being assembled the T-shirt together with them, into the red color.
He commanded them not to depart from
Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of
the Father, “which,” He said, “you have
What happens?
heard from Me; for John truly baptized
The dye goes into the T-Shirt.
219
So the T-shirt changes its color.
From red to white.
Once this has happened, it’s hard to go
back.
Because the dye has gone inside the
cloth.
The cloth and the dye have now become
inseparable.
They are one.
This is what happens when a person is
baptized into the Holy Spirit.
Then the Holy Spirit is no longer with
that person but in that person.
76

In other words, then the Holy Spirit has
gone inside that person.
We can then say that that person has
received the Holy Spirit.
This is what Jesus talks about in Acts 1.
Jesus says that to his disciples that they
would be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 1:4-8]
4 And being assembled together with
them, He commanded them not to
depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for
the Promise of the Father, “which,” He
said, “you have heard from Me;
5 for John truly baptized with water,
but YOU SHALL BE BAPTIZED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT not many days from
now.”
6 Therefore, when they had come
together, they asked Him, saying,
“Lord, will You at this time restore the
kingdom to Israel?”
7 And He said to them, “It is not for
you to know times or seasons which the
Father has put in His own authority.
8 But you shall receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you;
and you shall be witnesses to Me
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
77

The Bible is chock-a-block full of
promises.
From Genesis to Revelation.
It contains thousands of promises.
But here in verse 4, Jesus talks about
‘the’ promise. He says,
[Acts 1:4]
“wait for THE Promise of the Father
...”
The Promise of the Father.
A unique promise.
The Father’s Promise!
What is it?
In verse 5, Jesus says,
[Acts 1:5]
“for John truly baptized with water.”
John was a forerunner.
He came to point people to Jesus.
And then he dunked them in the river
Jordan.
But ...
There is a ‘but.’
78

[Acts 1:5]
“... John truly baptized with water, BUT
you shall be baptized with the Holy
Spirit not many days from now.”
This is it.
The promise of the Father.
That they would be dunked into Holy
Spirit.
When you are dunked into water, you
know it.
You get wet.
And when you are dunked into the fiery
river of the Holy Spirit, you will also
certainly know it.
You are set on fire.
79

80

PART 3:
WHAT YOU NEED
TO KNOW
81

9 CHRIST CRUCIFIED.
LET’S GO back to the basics.
101 Christianity.
The very foundation of our faith.
What do we need to believe so that we
can receive the Holy Spirit?
This is not a trick question.
The answer is simple.
We need to believe the gospel of Jesus.
The good news what Jesus has already
done for us.
This is all.
So what is the gospel?
This is the gospel, according to Paul.
[1 Corinthians 15:1-8]
1 ... Brethren, I DECLARE TO YOU
THE GOSPEL which I preached to you,
which also you received and in which
you stand,
2 by which also you are saved, if you
hold fast that word which I preached to
you—unless you believed in vain.
83

3 For I delivered to you first of all that
which I also received: that CHRIST
DIED FOR OUR SINS according to the
Scriptures,
4 and that HE WAS BURIED, and that
HE ROSE AGAIN THE THIRD DAY
according to the Scriptures,
5 and that He was seen by Cephas
[=Peter], and then by the twelve.
6 After that He was seen by over five
hundred brethren at once, of whom the
greater part remain to the present, but
some have fallen asleep.
7 After that He was seen by James,
then by all the apostles.
8 Then last of all He was seen by me
also ...”
The gospel is about what Jesus has done
for us.
What is it?
1) He died for our sins,
2) He was buried, and
3) He rose again from the dead.
Jesus was our representative.
A representative is someone who acts
on behalf of someone else.
84

For example, a national football team.
When the team wins, the whole nation
wins.
When the team loses, the whole nation
loses.
Adam was the first representative of the
human race.
So what Adam did had an effect on all.
God had originally created Adam and
Eve to live in union with Him—in God’s
Kingdom.
But then Satan came.
Satan tempted Eve to chose independence
from God.
85

This is what the Tree of the Knowledge of
Good and Evil stands for.
Independence.
It is based on the system, “Do good, get
good; do bad, get bad.”
But this system is not about relationship.
It’s about performance.
So, we know that Adam and Eve choose
independence from God.
And because of that, they were
disconnected from the Kingdom of God.
In their spirit, they were disconnected
from the Spirit of God.
They were disconnected from God’s
realm of influence.
So they came under the authority of
Satan.
And then they had children.
So what they did had an effect on all of
their descendants.
This is the concept of inheritance.
So, everyone who is born into this world
is born into a state of separation from
God.
They are separated from God in their spirit.
86

God because of him (see below).
15:22, 45)
(1 Corinthians
KINGDOM
GOD
Adam and Eve
in the beginning
KINGDOM OF
SATAN
After separation
from God
Us today
106
But this is were the gospel (the good
news) comes in.
The glorious gospel of the Kingdom.
Jesus was not from the linage of Adam!
He was not a descendant of Adam.
Jesus was conceived through the Holy
Spirit.
So He was God’s new representative.
God’s second Adam.
87

And in that capacity, Jesus helped us.
He stepped into our shoes.
Adam had brought us under this system
of “Do good, get good; do bad, get bad.”
So we are all guilty and deserve
punishment.
But now Jesus stepped in and paid the
punishment that we deserved!
On the cross.
That is the good news!
Jesus legally paid for us—the just
(sinless) for the unjust (us)—to bring us
to God.
But there is even more.
We said Jesus was our representative.
So, we can say what he did, we did.
What happened to Him happened to us.
This means that when He died, we died.
When He was buried, we were buried.
And when He rose again from the dead,
we rose again from the dead.
This is what Paul tells us.
He says,
88

[2 Corinthians 5:15]
“If One (Jesus Christ) died for all,
THEN ALL DIED ...”
This means what we’ve just talked about.
Jesus did not just die for us.
He died as us, meaning we died with
Him.
We were buried with Him.
And we rose with Him.
This is how He could bring us out from
under the rule of Satan (the Kingdom of
Satan) and bring us back under God’s
rule (the Kingdom of God).
All human efforts to change yourself are
futile.
Only through Jesus, this is possible
Because only Jesus was sinless.
He was born sinless, and He died for us
sinless.
That’s why He could die for our sins.
That is why He could pay for our sins.
So this is 101 Christianity.
But there is something that people
sometimes overlook.
This gospel needs to be preached.
By someone who is filled with the Holy
Spirit. (1 Peter 1:12)
So that people can believe it.
Because how can people believe if they
have not heard it?
And there is something else.
This is equally important.
The gospel needs to be received as well.
That is why Paul said,
90

[1 Corinthians 15:1]
Brethren, I declare to you the gospel
which I preached to you, which also you
RECEIVED and in which you stand ...
The Corinthians received the gospel that
Paul preached to them.
How?
How did they receive the gospel of Jesus’
death, burial, and resurrection?
This is what gets us to Part 2 of this
book.
We are going to look at how people
received the gospel.
91

92

PART 4:
WHAT YOU NEED
TO DO
93

94

10 IN ACTS, WHEN
PEOPLE BELIEVED
THE GOSPEL, THEY
REPENTED.
TO REPENT means ‘to change your
mind.’
The Greek word is ‘metanoia.’
And what leads us to repentance?
It’s the
[Romans 2:4]
GOODNESS OF GOD that leads to
repentance.
We need to have first experienced Jesus.
Then our repentance will be real.
Then we will turn away from our old
ways.
From idol worship.
Like the Thessalonians.
95

Paul reminds them in his letter how they
[1 Thessalonians 1:9]
... turned to God from idols to serve the
living and true God ...
When we have experienced Jesus, we
will turn away from sexual immorality.
We will turn away from unrighteousness.
This is what also happened in Ephesus.
[Acts 19:11-20]
11 Now God worked unusual miracles
by the hands of Paul,
12 so that even handkerchiefs or
aprons were brought from his body to
the sick, and the diseases left them and
the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish
exorcists took it upon themselves to
call the name of the Lord Jesus over
those who had evil spirits, saying, “We
exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul
preaches.”
14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva,
a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and
said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know;
but who are you?”
96

16 Then the man in whom the evil
spirit was leaped on them, overpowered
them, and prevailed against them, so
that they fled out of that house naked
and wounded.
17 This became known both to all Jews
and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and
fear fell on them all, and the name of
the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And MANY WHO HAD BELIEVED
CAME CONFESSING AND TELLING
THEIR DEEDS.
19 Also, MANY OF THOSE WHO
HAD PRACTICED MAGIC BROUGHT
THEIR BOOKS TOGETHER AND
BURNED THEM IN THE SIGHT OF
ALL. And they counted up the value
of them, and it totaled fifty thousand
pieces of silver.
20 So the word of the Lord grew
mightily and prevailed.
The people who experienced Jesus
burned their books about magic.
They confessed their evil deeds and
made restitution.
They turned away from their old religion.
When people have experienced the
goodness of Jesus, they will turn away
97

from anything that is connected with
their old religion.
Repentance is an ongoing process.
Even after we have come to Jesus.
And true repentance is real.
It’s not just in words.
But in deeds.
People who have genuinely experienced
Jesus will be willing to lay down their
lives at the feet of Jesus and follow Him.
98

99

11 IN ACTS, WHEN
PEOPLE BELIEVED THE
GOSPEL, THEY GOT
BAPTIZED.
THIS IS what we see in Acts. People who
believed the gospel got baptized.
In Acts 2, for example.
Peter preached the good news of Jesus’
death, burial, and resurrection.
Then his listeners are touched in their
hearts. And they ask him,
“What shall we do?”
Peter answers,
[Acts 2:37]
[Acts 2:38-40]
38 “Repent, AND LET EVERY ONE OF
YOU BE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF
JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION
OF SINS; and you shall receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit.”
101

39 “For the promise is to you and to
your children, and to all who are afar
off, as many as the Lord our God will
call.”
40 And with many other words he
testified and exhorted them, saying “Be
saved from this perverse generation.”
And then in the next verse, we read,
[Acts 2:41]
THEN THOSE WHO GLADLY
RECEIVED HIS WORD GOT
BAPTIZED; and that day about three
thousand souls were added to them.
So the people who received the gospel
got baptized.
This is what we see right through the
book of Acts.
For example, in Acts 8.
Philip goes to the city of Samaria and
preaches Christ to them.
102

[Acts 8:5-12]
5 Then Philip went down to the city of
Samaria and preached Christ to them.
6 And the multitudes with one accord
heeded the things spoken by Philip,
hearing and seeing the miracles which
he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with a
loud voice, came out of many who
were possessed; and many who were
paralyzed and lame were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
9 But there was a certain man called
Simon, who previously practiced
sorcery in the city and astonished the
people of Samaria, claiming that he
was someone great,
10 to whom they all gave heed, from
the least to the greatest, saying, “This
man is the great power of God.”
11 And they heeded him because he
had astonished them with his sorceries
for a long time.
12 But when they believed Philip as
he preached the things concerning the
kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, both men and women were
baptized.
103

Then, when people believe, what
happens?
We read,
[Acts 8:12]
WHEN THEY BELIEVED Phillip as he
preached the things concerning the
kingdom of God and the name of Jesus
Christ, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN
WERE BAPTIZED.
In Acts 8, Philip preaches to an official
from Ethiopia.
[Acts 8:26-35]
26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to
Philip, saying, “Arise and go toward
the south along the road which goes
down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is
desert.
27 So he arose and went. And behold,
a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great
authority under Candace the queen
of the Ethiopians, who had charge
of all her treasury, and had come to
Jerusalem to worship,
28 was returning. And sitting in his
chariot, he was reading Isaiah the
prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go
near and overtake this chariot.”
104

30 So Philip ran to him, and heard
him reading the prophet Isaiah, and
said, “Do you understand what you are
reading?”
31 And he said, “How can I, unless
someone guides me?” And he asked
Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 The place in the Scripture which he
read was this: “He was led as a sheep
to the slaughter; And as a lamb before
its shearer is silent, So He opened not
His mouth.
33 In His humiliation His justice was
taken away, And who will declare His
generation? For His life is taken from
the earth.”
34 So the eunuch answered Philip and
said, “I ask you, of whom does the
prophet say this, of himself or of some
other man?”
35 Then PHILIP OPENED HIS
MOUTH, AND BEGINNING AT THIS
SCRIPTURE, PREACHED JESUS TO
HIM.
Then the man responds to the gospel.
How?
He wants to get baptized.
105

We read,
[Acts 8:36-40]
36 Now as they went down the road,
they came to some water. And the
eunuch said, “SEE, HERE IS WATER.
WHAT HINDERS ME FROM BEING
BAPTIZED?”
37 Then Philip said, “If you believe
with all your heart, you may.” And he
answered and said, “I believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God.”
38 So he commanded the chariot to
stand still. And BOTH PHILIP AND
THE EUNUCH WENT DOWN INTO
THE WATER, AND HE BAPTIZED
HIM.
39 Now when they came up out of the
water, the Spirit of the Lord caught
Philip away, so that the eunuch saw
him no more; and he went on his way
rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And
passing through, he preached in all the
cities till he came to Caesarea.
We see this also in Corinth.
When the Corinthians believed, they got
baptized.
106

[Acts 18:8]
Then Crispus, the ruler of the
synagogue, believed on the Lord with
all his household. And many of the
Corinthians, hearing, BELIEVED AND
WERE BAPTIZED.
We read,
We see this pattern also in the story of
Paul and Silas and the prison keeper who
turns to Jesus.
First, the earthquake happens.
And then Paul and Silas have a chance to
preach to the prison keeper and his whole
household.
We read,
[Acts 16:32-33]
32 Then they spoke the word of the
Lord to him and to all who were in his
house.
33 And he took them the same hour
of the night and washed their stripes.
AND IMMEDIATELY HE AND ALL HIS
FAMILY WERE BAPTIZED.
Acts is literally full of examples of
people who got baptized after they had
heard the gospel.
107

Why is that?
Because this is Apostolic doctrine.
As I have said before, this is what the
apostles taught from the beginning.
This is what Peter instructed the people
on the day of Pentecost to do.
Peter first preached to them.
He preached Jesus and Him crucified.
Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Then the people believed.
So they asked him,
“What shall we do?”
Then Peter said to them, clear and
straightforward:
[Acts 2:37]
[Acts 2:38]
“Repent, AND LET EVERY ONE OF
YOU BE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF
JESUS CHRIST FOR THE REMISSION
OF SINS; and you shall receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit.”
We are now in a time of restoration of all
things.
What we see in Acts is becoming the new
108

normal again.
When people believe the gospel, they get
baptized.
109

110

12 “DIE WITH CHRIST,
RISE WITH CHRIST.”
WATER baptism connects us with our
co-death and co-burial with Jesus.
This is what Paul says in Romans,
[Romans 6:3-5]
3 ... Do you not know that as many of
us as were baptized into Christ Jesus
were baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him
through baptism into death, that just
as Christ was raised from the dead by
the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united together
in the likeness of His death ...
But getting baptized in water is one
thing.
The apostles also wanted to make sure
one more thing.
That believers also received the Holy
Spirit.
111

This is what we have seen in Acts 8.
This was their heart.
And this is my heart.
That’s why I have written this book.
Paul also thought like this.
That is why he asked the Ephesian
disciples if they had already received the
Holy Spirit or not yet.
[Acts 19:2]
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when
you believed?”
We’ve looked at this event already.
In the case of the Ephesians, they still
needed to hear the gospel of Jesus.
And then get baptized.
And then they did receive the Holy Spirit.
We read,
[Acts 19:5-6]
5 WHEN THEY HEARD THIS, THEY
WERE BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF
THE LORD JESUS.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on
them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke with tongues and
prophesied.
112

I have seen this so many times.
People receiving the Holy Spirit in power.
Once they have heard, believed, and then
acted on the gospel.
237
HOW TO BE BORN AGAIN
Jesus died and
was buried
for us
Jesus was
raised from the
dead by the
Holy Spirit for
us
When
we
believe
We get baptized
! We are
united with
Jesus in His
death and burial
We receive the
Holy Spirit
! We are
united with
Jesus in His
resurrection
113

190 DID YOU RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN YOU BELIEVED?
ACT ON THE WORD
KEEP HEARING THE GOSPEL from someone who
already has the Holy Spirit and speaks in tongues
!
WHEN YOU BELIEVE
If you DON’T
BELIEVE yet
GET BAPTIZED by
full immersion in
water and CALL
ON THE NAME OF
JESUS
GET RE-BAPTIZED by full immersion
in water IF a) you didn’t hear and
believe the clear gospel, and/or b)
you were ‘baptized’ by sprinkling
WHEN YOU GOT BAPTIZED THE
FIRST TIME
ASK the person who
baptized you (or
someone who has the
Holy Spirit and speaks
in tongues) TO LAY
HANDS ON YOU and
pray with you
KEEP HEARING the gospel
and about the Holy Spirit
If you
HAVEN’T
RECEIVED
the Holy
Spirit yet
RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT with the accompanying sign
of speaking in other tongues
KEEP SPEAKING IN TONGUES regularly BY YOURSELF
and let the Holy Spirit teach you how to be led by Him
114

13 FLOWCHART: WHAT
TO DO NEXT.
HAVE A look at the flowchart [see left
page].
See where you are at.
Maybe you don’t fully understand the
gospel yet. Then you need someone to
help you to understand it.
Or it may be that haven’t got baptized
yet. Then, when you believe, get
baptized.
Maybe you have been sprinkled. Then
get baptized by full immersion.
Or maybe you have already been
baptized but not yet received the Holy
Spirit. Then keep hearing the gospel.
And have someone who already has
received the Holy Spirit pray for you and
lay hands on you.
You can also receive the Holy Spirit
without anyone laying hands on you.
So act on the word.
115

116

PART 5:
WHAT IS GOING
TO HAPPEN?
117

14 FILLED TO THE
OVERFLOW.
LET’S GO back once more to Acts 2:37-
38.
So when the people say,
“What shall we do?”
Peter answers,
[Acts 2:37]
[Acts 2:38]
“Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for
the remission of sins; AND YOU SHALL
RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT.”
And then what happens when people
receive the Holy Spirit in the book of
Acts?
We have the first account in Acts 2.
[Acts 2:1-4]
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully
come, they were all with one accord in
one place.
119

2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon
each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
So we see this.
When people were filled with Holy Spirit,
there was an overflow.
We read in verse 4,
[Acts 2:4]
... THEY WERE ALL FILLED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO
SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES, as
the Spirit gave them utterance.
It is like when you fill up a cup with
water.
Imagine you are pouring water into a
cup.
As you keep pouring the water, the water
level continually rises.
120

It will go up.
And up.
And up.
Until there is an overflow.
So if you are fully filled with the Holy
Spirit, there will be an overflow through
the mouth.
It says,
[Acts 2:4]
... they were ALL FILLED WITH THE
HOLY SPIRIT AND [they] began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit
gave them utterance.”
Now it says,
[Acts 2:4]
... [THEY] BEGAN TO SPEAK with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.”
The Holy Spirit doesn’t force us to speak.
When we are filled with the Holy Spirit,
we need to start speaking.
121

122

15 A SUMMARY OF
ACTS.
SO WHAT is the conclusion?
This is what we can say for sure.
The bible mentions 4 accounts in Acts
that tell us what happened when people
received the Holy Spirit.
In 3 out of 4 accounts, the bible says that
people also spoke in tongues.
In Acts 2.
[Acts 2:1-4]
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully
come, they were all with one accord in
one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them
DIVIDED TONGUES, AS OF FIRE,
AND ONE SAT UPON EACH OF
THEM.
123

4 And THEY WERE ALL FILLED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT AND BEGAN TO
SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES, as
the Spirit gave them utterance.
In Acts 10.
[Acts 10:44-46]
44 While Peter was still speaking these
words, THE HOLY SPIRIT FELL UPON
ALL THOSE WHO HEARD THE
WORD.
45 And those of the circumcision who
believed were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because the gift of
the Holy Spirit had been poured out on
the Gentiles also.
46 FOR THEY HEARD THEM SPEAK
WITH TONGUES and magnify God. ...
And in Acts 19.
[Acts 19:5-6]
5 When they heard this, they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on
them, THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME
UPON THEM, AND THEY SPOKE
WITH TONGUES and prophesied.
But what about the other phenomena?
124

125

126

16 OTHER
PHENOMENA.
IN ACTS 2, 10, and 19, the bible clearly
says that people who received the Holy
Spirit spoke in tongues.
And there were also other phenomena
present.
In Acts 2, we read about
- a mighty rushing wind,
- tongues of fire,
- people being drunk in the Spirit,
- listeners were hearing the tongue
speakers in their own language.
The text says,
[Acts 2:2-8]
2 And suddenly there came a SOUND
from heaven, AS OF A RUSHING
MIGHTY WIND, and it filled the whole
house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon
each of them.
127

4 And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak with
other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem
Jews, devout men, from every nation
under heaven.
6 And when this SOUND occurred,
the multitude came together, and
were confused, because EVERYONE
HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN
LANGUAGE.
7 Then they were all amazed and
marveled, saying to one another,
“Look, are not all these who speak
Galileans?
8 And how is it that WE HEAR,
EACH IN OUR OWN LANGUAGE IN
WHICH WE WERE BORN?
We will look at this in more detail in an
extra chapter. [See CHAPTER 19: BUT ...
WHAT ABOUT THE TONGUES ON THE
DAY OF PENTECOST?]
In Acts 10, we read that the people who
received the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues.
And they also magnified (praised) God.
The text says,
128

[Acts 10:45-46]
45 And those of the circumcision who
believed were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because the gift of
the Holy Spirit had been poured out on
the Gentiles also.
46 For they heard them speak with
tongues AND MAGNIFY GOD. ...
And then in Acts 19, we read that people
received the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues.
And they also prophesied.
So there were also other phenomena
besides tongues.
[Acts 19:6]
And when Paul had laid hands on
them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke with tongues AND
PROPHESIED.
I have seen people receive the Holy Spirit
many times. They always also spoke in
tongues.
But the way they received the Holy Spirit
was often very different.
Many who received the Holy Spirit also
had power encounters.
129

I have seen the Holy Spirit falling on
people.
And they experienced different degrees
of glory.
Different degrees of the presence and the
power of God.
Some got drunk in the Spirit.
Some began to shake.
Some fell over.
Some began to cry.
Some began to laugh.
Some experienced deliverance from
demons.
Some experienced physical healings.
Some experienced healings in their mind.
And so on.
I expect all this to happen when the fire
of God falls.
But interestingly, the book of Acts
mentions that there is one common
denominator.
Speaking in tongues.
The word of God clearly says that people
who received the Holy Spirit also spoke
in tongues.
130

In 3 out of 4 events: in Acts 2, in Acts 10,
and in Acts 19.
This is the sign of tongues.
Jesus spoke about this in Mark 16.
He said signs will follow all those who
believe, including speaking in tongues.
[Mark 16:15-20]
15 And He said to them, “Go into all
the world and preach the gospel to
every creature.
16 He who believes and is baptized will
be saved; but he who does not believe
will be condemned.
17 And these SIGNS will follow those
who believe: In My name they will cast
out demons; THEY WILL SPEAK WITH
NEW TONGUES;
18 they will take up serpents; and if
they drink anything deadly, it will by no
means hurt them; they will lay hands
on the sick, and they will recover.”
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken
to them, He was received up into
heaven, and sat down at the right hand
of God.
20 And they went out and preached
everywhere, the Lord working with
them and confirming the word through
the ACCOMPANYING SIGNS ...
131

132

17 WHAT IS SPEAKING
IN TONGUES?
SPEAKING in tongues is not ordinary
prayer.
When people speak in tongues, they
speak
[Acts 2:4]
... AS THE SPIRIT G[IVES] THEM
UTTERANCE.
So, it is not a normal language that we
can learn.
In 1 Corinthians, Paul talks about
speaking in tongues.
He says,
[1 Corinthians 14:14-15]
14 ... IF I PRAY IN A TONGUES, MY
SPIRIT PRAYS, but my understanding is
unfruitful.
15 What is the conclusion then? I WILL
PRAY WITH THE SPIRIT, and I will
also pray with the understanding. I
WILL SING WITH THE SPIRIT, and I
will also sing with the understanding.
133

This is very clear.
When we speak in tongues, our spirit is
praying.
Paul says,
[1 Corinthians 14:14]
.. If I pray in a tongues, MY SPIRIT
prays ...
When we speak in an ordinary language,
we need to think first.
And then we speak.
So our mind is active.
If we want to speak an ordinary
language, we need to learn it first.
For example, when we were born, we
couldn’t speak a language yet.
We had to learn it.
For our early childhood on.
We use that language to communicate
with one another.
Anybody who has learned a particular
language will be able to communicate
with other speakers of that language.
But speaking in tongues is different.
When we speak in tongues, we don’t talk
to one another.
134

We speak to God.
Others cannot understand.
We also cannot understand.
Paul says,
[1 Corinthians 14:14]
... If I pray in a tongues, my spirit
prays, but MY UNDERSTANDING IS
UNFRUITFUL.
But God can understand.
So what is the conclusion, then?
Once we have received the Holy Spirit,
we can do both.
We can pray in tongues. This is praying
with the spirit. In other words, in a
language that we don’t understand.
And we can pray with the understanding.
In other words, in a language that we can
understand.
And we can also sing.
Either in the spirit or in a standard
language.
This is what Paul says.
[1 Corinthians 14:15]
What is the conclusion then? I will pray
135

with the spirit, AND I will also pray
with the understanding. I will sing with
the spirit, AND I will also sing with the
understanding.
So speaking in tongues is very different
from speaking in an ordinary language.
136

137

138

18 HOW DOES
SPEAKING IN
TONGUES DIFFER
FROM SPEAKING IN A
NORMAL LANGUAGE?
PAUL was a champion in speaking in
tongues.
He prayed in tongues more than anyone
of the Corinthian church.
Paul said,
[1 Corinthians 14:18]
I thank my God, I speak in tongues
more than you all ...”
He had a lot of revelation about speaking
in tongues.
In 1 Corinthians 14, in verse 2, he tells
us how speaking in tongues differs from
speaking in an ordinary language.
139

# 1: SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS
DIRECTED TO GOD
[1 Corinthians 14:2]
... he who speaks in a tongue DOES
NOT SPEAK TO MEN BUT TO GOD,
for no one understands him; however,
in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
When we speak in a standard language,
we talk to other people.
But when we speak in tongues, we don’t
talk to people.
We talk to God.
# 2: SPEAKING IN TONGUES CAN’T BE
UNDERSTOOD BY OTHER PEOPLE
140
[1 Corinthians 14:2]
... he who speaks in a tongue does not
speak to men but to God, for NO ONE
UNDERSTANDS HIM; however, in the
spirit he speaks mysteries.
When we speak a natural language, other
people who speak the same language can
understand us.

But, when we speak in tongues, nobody
can understand us.
God, of course, can understand.
Because we speak to Him.
But others can’t understand.
We can’t understand either.
This often jars our mind.
Because our mind loves to be in control.
Our mind loves to run all the affairs of
our life.
It loves to be involved.
But when we speak in tongues, the mind
is not involved.
It’s left out. It has to stand aside and let
the spirit take over.
Because when we speak in tongues, our
spirit prays. Not our mind.
So that is a good thing.
Because it relegates our mind to a lower
place.
# 3: SPEAKING IN TONGUES
ORIGINATES FROM THE SPIRIT
141

[1 Corinthians 14:2]
... he who speaks in a tongue does not
speak to men but to God, for no one
understands him; however, IN THE
SPIRIT HE SPEAKS mysteries.
When we speak in tongues, we speak in
the spirit.
The language is inspired by the Holy
Spirit.
In Acts 2 it says,
[Acts 2:4]
“They were all filled with the Holy
Spirit and [they] began to speak with
other tongues, AS THE SPIRIT GAVE
THEM UTTERANCE.”
So when we speak in tongues, we speak
in the spirit.
The source of the language is the Holy
Spirit.
In CHAPTER 20: A MEDICAL STUDY ON
SPEAKING IN TONGUES 17, we will look
at a study on speaking in tongues.
In that study, a doctor found out that
when people speak in tongues, a
particular area of the brain is active.
And not the area that has to do with
142

standard speech production.
# 4: WE SPEAK HIDDEN TRUTHS
[1 Corinthians 14:2]
... he who speaks in a tongue does not
speak to men but to God, for no one
understands him; however, in the spirit
HE SPEAKS MYSTERIES.
The word ‘mystery’ means a hidden
truth.
This truth is only known to the initiated.
So when we pray in tongues, we are
praying in a realm that is outside our
natural understanding.
It is a spiritual activity.
IN SUMMARY: WHEN WE SPEAK IN
TONGUES, THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US
In Romans 8, Paul also talks about
speaking in tongues.
In this passage, he sums up what
speaking in tongues is so well.
Paul says,
143

[Romans 8: 26-27]
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps
in our weaknesses. For we do not
know what we should pray for as we
ought, but THE SPIRIT HIMSELF
MAKES INTERCESSION FOR US with
groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts
knows what the mind of the Spirit is,
because HE MAKES INTERCESSION
FOR THE SAINTS ACCORDING TO
THE WILL OF GOD.
We are weak.
We have shortcomings.
We don’t know what we should be
praying for.
But the Holy Spirit knows.
And He is ready to help us.
So this is precisely what happens when
we speak in tongues.
The Holy Spirit is like scanning our
hearts.
And then He finds something that needs
fixing.
And then He goes to work to fix it.
So He prays for us.
144

Precisely, according to the will of God.
Perfect prayers.
This is wonderful.
Right?
So, are you already speaking in tongues?
If not yet, get ready.
Get ready to make this experience.
It will lift you from the realm of the
natural into the realm of the supernatural.
.
145

146

19 BUT ... WHAT
ABOUT THE TONGUES
ON THE DAY OF
PENTECOST??
SOME PEOPLE say,
“So you are saying that speaking in
tongues cannot be understood. Correct?”
“But what about the tongues on the day
of Pentecost? Doesn’t the Bible say that
the first disciples all spoke in foreign
languages that could be understood?”
“So, what about the tongues on
Pentecost?”
Ok. Let’s look at this in more detail.
Before concluding anything, let’s first
read the text and then comment on what
is written.
This is still important.
We need to look at what a text explicitly
says, and then draw our conclusion from
what the text directly says, and not from
147

what it doesn’t say.
So what exactly happened in Acts 2?
[Acts 2: 1-18]
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully
come, they were all with one accord in
one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound
from heaven, as of a rushing mighty
wind, and it filled the whole house
where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided
tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon
each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak with
other tongues as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem
Jews, devout men, from every nation
under heaven.
6 And when this SOUND occurred,
the multitude came together, and were
confused, because everyone HEARD
them speak in his own language.
7 Then they were all amazed and
marveled, saying to one another,
“Look, are not all these who speak
Galileans?
148

8 And how is it that WE HEAR, each
in our own language in which we were
born?
9 PARTHIANS and MEDES and
ELAMITES, those dwelling in
MESOPOTAMIA, JUDEA and
CAPPADOCIA, PONTUS and ASIA,
10 PHRYGIA and PAMPHYLIA, EGYPT
and the PARTS OF LIBYA ADJOINING
CYRENE, visitors from ROME, both
JEWS and PROSELYTES,
11 CRETANS and ARABS—WE HEAR
them speaking in our own tongues the
wonderful works of God.”
12 So they were all amazed and
perplexed, saying to one another,
“Whatever could this mean?”
13 Others mocking said, “They are full
of new wine.”
14 But Peter, standing up with the
eleven, raised his voice and said to
them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell
in Jerusalem, let this be known to you,
and heed my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you
suppose, since it is only the third hour
of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the
prophet Joel:
149

17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last
days, says God, That I will pour out of
My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, Your
young men shall see visions, Your old
men shall dream dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My
maidservants I will pour out My Spirit
in those days; And they shall prophesy.
So, 120 people on that day were
[Acts 2:4]
“all filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak with other tongues as
the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Now, let’s look at the passage very
closely.
First, it says,
[Acts 2:6]
“And when this SOUND occurred ...”
So there was a sound.
The King James Version puts it like this,
[Acts 2:6]
“Now when this was NOISED abroad
...”
150

So there was a noise.
The kind of noise you get when lots of
people are speaking at the same time.
I get this sometime in my classrooms.
When lots of students get excited and are
all speaking at the same time, it can get
quite noisy.
But when that happens, I don’t
understand what they are saying.
We have such a case here.
Then we read how the people who heard
that noise reacted.
[Acts 2:6]
And when this sound occurred, the
multitude came together, and WERE
CONFUSED, BECAUSE EVERYONE
HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN
LANGUAGE.
The multitude (meaning lots of people)
were confused,
[Acts 2:6]
“because everyone [=every person]
HEARD THEM speak in his own
language.”
The Bible explicitly says,
151

[Acts 2:6]
“everyone HEARD them speak”.
Verse 8 repeats the same thing,
[Acts 2:8]
“How is it that we HEAR, each in our
own language in which we were born?”
Also in verse 11, it says,
[Acts 2:11]
“we HEAR them speaking in our own
tongues the wonderful works of God.””
So it clearly says that they heard them
speak in their own language.
But take note.
How many languages are mentioned?
Let’s count them.
[Acts 2:9-11]
9 PARTHIANS and MEDES and
ELAMITES, those dwelling in
MESOPOTAMIA, JUDEA and
CAPPADOCIA, PONTUS and ASIA,
10 PHRYGIA and PAMPHYLIA, EGYPT
and the PARTS OF LIBYA ADJOINING
CYRENE, visitors from ROME, both
JEWS and PROSELYTES,
152

11 CRETANS and ARABS ...
So who do we have here?
In verse 9:
1) PARTHIANS,
2) MEDES, AND
3) ELAMITES.
Then we have those dwelling in
4) MESOPOTAMIA,
5) JUDEA,
6) CAPPADOCIA,
7) PONTUS, AND
8) ASIA.
And in verse 10, we have those dwelling
in
9) PHRYGIA,
10) PAMPHYLIA,
11) EGYPT, AND
12) PARTS OF LIBYA ADJOINING CYRENE.
And visitors from Rome both
14) JEWS, AND
15) PROSELYTES.
And in verse 11 we have
153

16) CRETANS, AND
17) ARABS.
So about 17 language groups.
Now imagine you are together with
a group of friends from different
nationalities.
Let’s say they are from
1) Australia,
2) Thailand,
3) Indonesia,
4) Philippines,
5) Austria,
6) Switzerland (where they speak Swiss
German),
7) Norway,
8) Myanmar,
9) Mozambique,
10) Poland, and
11) North America.
Imagine now that all your friends are
very excited.
They all start to speak out in their own
language so that it creates a loud sound.
154

Would you be able to clearly
understand—let’s say—what the friend
from Australia is saying?
Or your other American friend?
It’s unlikely.
Because they are all speaking at the same
time.
It’s noisy.
You can only hear a noise.
This is what happened on Pentecost.
It says clearly three times that the
listeners (every one of them) heard the
speakers speak in their own language.
It doesn’t say that they all spoke in their
own language.
On Pentecost, these people all spoke in
tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
But then God performed a miracle in the
ears of the hearers.
155

156

20 A MEDICAL STUDY
ON SPEAKING IN
TONGUES.
A MEDICAL doctor from the University
of Pennsylvania did a study on speaking
in tongues. 1
He did MRI brain scans of people while
they were praying.
Buddhist monks.
Franciscan nuns.
And people who spoke in tongues.
The Buddhist monks were chanting.
The Franciscan nuns said their usual
prayers.
And the people who spoke in tongues
were either praying in tongues or singing
in tongues.
What he found out was amazing.
The MRI scans showed that people who
were praying in tongues were using a
different part of their brain than the
157

Buddhist monks and the Franciscan nuns.
The monks and the nuns used a part of
their brain that is connected with normal
speech production.
But that was not the case with the people
who spoke in tongues.
When people spoke in tongues, a
different part of the brain was active.
This part of the brain doesn’t have
anything to do with normal speech
production.
That’s very interesting because the bible
says that when we speak in tongues, we
speak as the Spirit inspires us to speak.
It says, in Acts 2 they
[Acts 2:4]
began to speak with other tongues
AS THE SPIRIT GAVE THEM
UTTERANCE.
So speaking in tongues is not ordinary
prayer.
It is prayer as the Spirit gives utterance.
PART 6:
PRACTICAL TIPS
161

21 GET INTO THE
MINDSET OF
RECEIVING.
[Acts 2:38]
“... YOU SHALL receive the GIFT of the
Holy Spirit.”
This is important.
If you haven’t received the Holy Spirit
yet, and you would like to.
Get into the mindset of receiving.
Maybe some thoughts in you prevent you
from receiving.
Maybe you think that you are not good
enough.
Or worthy enough.
To receive the Holy Spirit.
But you don’t receive the Holy Spirit
based on your performance.
You can receive the Holy Spirit freely
because the Holy Spirit is a gift.
163

Jesus paid for it.
It is done.
It doesn’t matter what your background
is.
Even if you come from a religious
background.
It doesn’t matter.
In my book ‘Holy Spirit Accountant,’ I
include 18 stories of how people received
the Holy Spirit.
HOLY SPIRIT
Testimonies of
How Believers
Received the
Holy Spirit
Like in Acts
ALBERT ELISHA OBERDORFER
ALBERT ELISHA OBERDORFER
Many of those people came from very
different backgrounds. (SEE PAGE 12.)
Some of them were
- Pastors with decades of experience,
164

- Buddhist monks,
- Medical doctors,
- Business people,
- Ph.D. students,
- Leaders in a congregation, and even
- A whole congregation.
Even a lady with a muslim husband.
Even a whole household.
And all received the Holy Spirit, as we
read about in the book of Acts.
Because that is what Jesus came for.
That’s what He died for.
That we may receive the gift of the
Father.
The Holy Spirit.
[Acts 1:4]
“THE Promise of the Father ...”
In my book, I include only one testimony
where people did not receive the Holy
Spirit.
This happened at a seminary (a place
where people go to study the bible).
And why?
165

Only because we were not allowed to
pray for people.
When I say we, I wasn’t the person who
suggested to pray for people.
It was a guest speaker from Australia.
But he wasn’t allowed to do it.
This broke my heart.
Because over the years, I have seen
hundreds of people receive the Holy
Spirit.
You can receive Him as well if you
haven’t received Him yet.
Get into the mindset of receiving.
166

167

22 BEGIN IN THE
SPIRIT.
AND IN what kind of language?
The scripture says,
[Acts 2:4]
... and [they] BEGAN TO SPEAK WITH
OTHER TONGUES as the Spirit gave
them utterance.
As we’ve said, when we speak a regular
language, the language is from our mind.
We need to think first and then speak.
But when we speak in other tongues, the
language is from the Spirit.
If I prayed for you to receive the Holy
Spirit, I might say:
“I will lay hands on you now, and you
will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
Once the Holy Spirit has come and filled
you, I will then ask you to release the
flow of the Holy Spirit.
So open your mouth.
169

Start with a sound or word, in faith.
You don’t understand.
It’s not a normal language that you can
understand.
Just let the first words flow out from you.
And then the Holy Spirit will give you
more.”
Sometimes, people start to speak in their
normal language.
But I don’t encourage them to do that.
Because when you start speaking, it is
like you are on a rail track.
If the rail track is called ‘praying in
understanding in a normal language’
and you are on that track, it is difficult to
jump over to another track.
So, start off on the rail track that says
‘speaking in tongues.’
Begin speaking in tongues, and then
continue doing that.
This is much easier to do.
It is much harder to start speaking in
understanding and then switch over to
speaking in tongues.
So, often I explain this also to people I
pray for.
170

And sometimes, when people receive the
Holy Spirit, they begin to speak in what
the bible calls ‘stammering lips.’
That was the case when I received the
Holy Spirit.
(I talk about this in chapter 9 of my book
Holy Spirit Accountant. The chapter is
called From Catholicism to Jesus—My
Story.)
So when I got baptized and received the
Holy Spirit, I couldn’t speak in a natural
language anymore.
I was speaking in stammering lips.
Later in the evening, when I was alone in
my room, I kneeled on the floor and then
began praying in tongues again.
That’s when I received a mighty touch
of God and also began to speak in full
tongues.
They gushed out from me like living
streams of water.
So this also happens sometimes.
I have come to the end of this book now.
I’m excited for you.
Because I know that God has lead you to
my book.
171

If you haven’t received the Holy Spirit,
act on the word, and you are going to
receive.
If you have already received the Holy
Spirit, then I trust that this book has
given you some vital insights and tools.
So that you can help others to receive the
Holy Spirit as well.
Jesus is ready to baptize with the Holy
Spirit and fire.
Wonderful Jesus!
The word ‘testimony’ means to do it again.
Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire.
This is His hallmark.
By this, we know that we have to do it with
the real Jesus.
Anything other than that is counterfeit.
John, the Baptist, said,
“I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance, but He who is coming after
me is mightier than I ... He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
(Matthew 3:11)
This is what we see happening in the book of
Acts.
And this is what Jesus is still doing today.
I have seen it so often, and I’d like to share
some of my experiences with you.
So that you may be inspired.
Perhaps you haven’t made this experience
yet.
DO ALL
SPEAK IN
TONGUES?
"I thank my God, I speak in tongues more than you all."
- Paul, the apostle
Yes and No
From a strictly biblical perspective, the
answer is straightforward.
'Yes and No.'
Everybody who has received the Holy Spirit
speaks in tongues as a sign.
But not everybody also operates in the gift
of tongues.
In other words, in the bible, we find two
types of speaking in tongues.
The accompanying sign of speaking in
tongues, according to Jesus in Mark 16:17:
"And these signs shall follow those
who believe ... in my name ... they will
speak with new tongues ..."
And the gift of tongues, according to Paul
in 1 Corinthians 12:10-11:
"To one is given ... to another different
kinds of tongues .. one and the
same Spirit works all these things,
distributing to each one individually as
He wills."
Get a crystal-clear insight into this subject
that has baffled many believers for
centuries.
A refreshing book.
“I am living in Thailand and delight to share the gospel
with people I meet. Thank you for taking the time to write
your refreshing book ... I can think of at least 100
people, including many friends, who need
to read it.” Peter J M
Makes difficult things easy to understand .
“Only Jesus is amazing by its simplicity
and the pictures and illustrations
explaining the text ... It makes difficult
things easy to understand! ... it helps
the Vietnamese believers a lot.” Jean-
Marc M
Brilliant in its analysis of the bible.
“This book is subtle. It looks simple on the
surface, but is profound and brilliant in its
analysis of the bible.” Hendrik Alexander
Simple, clear, thorough.
“Simple, clear, thorough. Profound eternal truth. The
gospel presented so that a six-year-old would be able
to understand. The gospel, as well, for a 99-year-old that
hungers for the truth and a relationship with their Creator.
Well done.” Micah Arlan A
Interested to find out about Jesus from a biblical
perspective? Then this book is for you.
“Written with profound insight, yet easy to read and
comprehend also for someone without any Christian
background. The author brilliantly explains how the Bible
answers the most significant questions regarding our
existence and how Jesus is the key to these answers.“
