ONLINE
The English Language School at the University of Alberta is
now offering Short Term Study Abroad courses online. Take
part in ‘live’ virtual classes where students will have the
opportunity to ask their instructor questions and collaborate
with other students on a variety of given topics. The courses
are interactive and engaging with a focus on speaking,
listening and reflective writing.
Students will be able to see and interact with
their instructor and other students in real
time.

THERE ARE TWO PROGRAMMING OPTIONS:
1. Integrated
Groups and individual students from a variety of language
backgrounds are integrated in engaging and interactive
classes. Students have the opportunity to learn about
Canada and the wider global community through an
exploration of history, culture, diversity, sustainability,
community engagement, and intercultural communication.
2. Cohort-Based
(private, closed group classes) Students from a single
institution study together in a private class for the duration
of their program. Cohort-Based programs offer flexible
start/end dates and are available year-round.

EXPERIENCE ENGLISH
LANGUAGE AND
CANADIAN CULTURE
The Short Term Study Abroad has designed programming
for students looking to enhance their English skills in
their area of study. Participants will gain confidence in the
areas of speaking and listening, with a focus on specialized
terminology and on interactions common in their industry.
English for Science & Technology Online
(ESTO)
This program includes authentic, academic classroom tasks
that build communicative language skills, with a focus on
the scientific community. This course:
In our Short Term Study Abroad program, we combine
the study of English with an introduction to contemporary
Canadian topics and global citizenship.
Communication Skills for
Global Citizenship Online (CSGCO)
This course is a practical and interactive introduction to
the English language and Canadian culture. This course
features:
• Interactive teaching approaches to encourage
confidence communicating in English with Canadian
and international students
• An introduction to Canada and global citizenship
• Fun projects and assignments that encourage
students to use English by communicating with other
international students, teachers and guest speakers
• Conversation clubs
• Online cultural exchanges and social activities offered
through the Student Engagement Centre
Course length: two weeks
Tuition: $ 700 CAD
• Focuses on the scientific community and writing up
research (writing a lab report and critical review, using
evidence to argue a point, analyzing and presenting
data).
• Familiarizes students with the features of language
(e.g., genre, lexicon, structure), including those which
are specific to the fields of science and technology.
• Features authentic, academically-related English texts
of varying types, in a range of science and technologyrelated
disciplines.
• Includes classroom tasks that facilitate communication
of various views and opinions; the analysis of varying
viewpoints; the expression of well-supported
arguments; and the demonstration of critical thinking.
• Invites guest speakers into the virtual classroom from
science-related areas
Course length: four weeks
Tuition: $ 1,470 CAD
English for Nursing Online (EFNO)
Students build their confidence and proficiency level in
English through the integrated online study of vocabulary,
spoken interactions, authentic listening texts and grammar
in use, with a focus on the nursing context. This course
features:
• Topics related to the nursing profession
• Reflective practices in order to provide the basis for
interactive, communicative learning tasks with a focus
on listening, speaking and vocabulary development
• Communication in routine nursing situations with
relative confidence
• Role-play scenarios and interaction with Canadian
nursing students and other guest speakers
• Conversation club and nursing buddy exchange
opportunities
Course length: four weeks
Tuition: $ 1,470 CAD
ENGAGE WITH THE WORLD
Recognizing that language learning takes place in real life
settings, the STSA program ensures that students have
abundant opportunities to meet and interact with other
international students in relaxed, but meaningful situations.
Our Student Engagement Centre (SEC) is online and we
invite STSA students to participate after class at no extra
cost. SEC activities include:
• Conversation clubs and guest speakers
• Daily online activities and workshops
• A variety of cultural activities and virtual tours
SEC online lessons lessons connect the students with the
UofA campus, local community and Edmonton.
