The <strong>English</strong> <strong>Language</strong> <strong>School</strong> at the University of Alberta is<br />

now offering <strong>Short</strong> <strong>Term</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>Abroad</strong> courses online. Take<br />

part in ‘live’ virtual classes where students will have the<br />

opportunity to ask their instructor questions and collaborate<br />

with other students on a variety of given topics. The courses<br />

are interactive and engaging with a focus on speaking,<br />

listening and reflective writing.<br />

Students will be able to see and interact with<br />

their instructor and other students in real<br />

time.<br />

THERE ARE TWO PROGRAMMING OPTIONS:<br />

1. Integrated<br />

Groups and individual students from a variety of language<br />

backgrounds are integrated in engaging and interactive<br />

classes. Students have the opportunity to learn about<br />

Canada and the wider global community through an<br />

exploration of history, culture, diversity, sustainability,<br />

community engagement, and intercultural communication.<br />

2. Cohort-Based<br />

(private, closed group classes) Students from a single<br />

institution study together in a private class for the duration<br />

of their program. Cohort-Based programs offer flexible<br />

start/end dates and are available year-round.<br />

EXPERIENCE ENGLISH<br />

The <strong>Short</strong> <strong>Term</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>Abroad</strong> has designed programming<br />

for students looking to enhance their <strong>English</strong> skills in<br />

their area of study. Participants will gain confidence in the<br />

areas of speaking and listening, with a focus on specialized<br />

terminology and on interactions common in their industry.<br />

<strong>English</strong> for Science & Technology Online<br />

(ESTO)<br />

This program includes authentic, academic classroom tasks<br />

that build communicative language skills, with a focus on<br />

the scientific community. This course:<br />

In our <strong>Short</strong> <strong>Term</strong> <strong>Study</strong> <strong>Abroad</strong> program, we combine<br />

the study of <strong>English</strong> with an introduction to contemporary<br />

Canadian topics and global citizenship.<br />

Communication Skills for<br />

Global Citizenship Online (CSGCO)<br />

This course is a practical and interactive introduction to<br />

the <strong>English</strong> language and Canadian culture. This course<br />

features:<br />

• Interactive teaching approaches to encourage<br />

confidence communicating in <strong>English</strong> with Canadian<br />

and international students<br />

• An introduction to Canada and global citizenship<br />

• Fun projects and assignments that encourage<br />

students to use <strong>English</strong> by communicating with other<br />

international students, teachers and guest speakers<br />

• Conversation clubs<br />

• Online cultural exchanges and social activities offered<br />

through the Student Engagement Centre<br />

Course length: two weeks<br />

Tuition: $ 700 CAD<br />

• Focuses on the scientific community and writing up<br />

research (writing a lab report and critical review, using<br />

evidence to argue a point, analyzing and presenting<br />

data).<br />

• Familiarizes students with the features of language<br />

(e.g., genre, lexicon, structure), including those which<br />

are specific to the fields of science and technology.<br />

• Features authentic, academically-related <strong>English</strong> texts<br />

of varying types, in a range of science and technologyrelated<br />

disciplines.<br />

• Includes classroom tasks that facilitate communication<br />

of various views and opinions; the analysis of varying<br />

viewpoints; the expression of well-supported<br />

arguments; and the demonstration of critical thinking.<br />

• Invites guest speakers into the virtual classroom from<br />

science-related areas<br />

Course length: four weeks<br />

Tuition: $ 1,470 CAD<br />

<strong>English</strong> for Nursing Online (EFNO)<br />

Students build their confidence and proficiency level in<br />

<strong>English</strong> through the integrated online study of vocabulary,<br />

spoken interactions, authentic listening texts and grammar<br />

in use, with a focus on the nursing context. This course<br />

features:<br />

• Topics related to the nursing profession<br />

• Reflective practices in order to provide the basis for<br />

interactive, communicative learning tasks with a focus<br />

on listening, speaking and vocabulary development<br />

• Communication in routine nursing situations with<br />

relative confidence<br />

• Role-play scenarios and interaction with Canadian<br />

nursing students and other guest speakers<br />

• Conversation club and nursing buddy exchange<br />

opportunities<br />

Course length: four weeks<br />

Tuition: $ 1,470 CAD<br />

ENGAGE WITH THE WORLD<br />

Recognizing that language learning takes place in real life<br />

settings, the STSA program ensures that students have<br />

abundant opportunities to meet and interact with other<br />

international students in relaxed, but meaningful situations.<br />

Our Student Engagement Centre (SEC) is online and we<br />

invite STSA students to participate after class at no extra<br />

cost. SEC activities include:<br />

• Conversation clubs and guest speakers<br />

• Daily online activities and workshops<br />

• A variety of cultural activities and virtual tours<br />

SEC online lessons lessons connect the students with the<br />

UofA campus, local community and Edmonton.<br />
