SROAMazing Race at Whitewater
Selkirk College students in the Ski Resort
Management & Operations Program are hosting the
annual SROAMazing Race at Whitewater Ski Resort
on Sunday, March 28. Bring your best costumes and
enthusiasm for a great day at the hill.
With the countdown to the end of the
Whitewater Ski Resort season on, Selkirk
College students in the Ski Resort Management
& Operations (SROAM) Program are
inviting fresh air lovers to take one last shot
at amazing.
The Nelson-based SROAM Program is
in its 40th year of providing the education
and training for bright ski industry futures.
As part of semester-end assignments, firstyear
students are once again organizing the
SROAMazing Race that takes place on Sunday,
March 28. A full day of activities includes
a scavenger hunt, costume contest, skin-towin
race and video contest. With a deep list
of local sponsors, the day also carries promise
of plenty of terrific prizes.
“In year’s past, the SROAMazing Race has
brought the community together and that
spirit has never been more important than
now,” says first-year SROAM Program student
Max Jones. “It has also created a great
opportunity for students to gain knowledge
about the responsibilities of creating an event
like this as we prepare for careers in the
industry.”
This year’s SROAMazing Race is adding
environmental awareness
to the day’s
activities with focus
on POW (Protect Our Winters) Canada, a
national organization with a mission to turn
passionate outdoor people in effective climate
advocates. All money raised will go towards
POW’s efforts towards sustainability of the
outdoor industry.
“Without snow, we obviously wouldn’t
be able to continue participating in these
beloved sports, so it’s important to do our job
as a collective to create a change,” says Jones.
The activities run between 10 am and 3
pm. The skin-to-win race will take place on
Sluice Box, where students encourage people
to bring their skins and get their game face
on. The annual scavenger hunt will be set up
for teams of two all over the mountain and
participants can arrive anytime to take part
in the hunt. The video contest is looking to
hear from people in two minutes or less about
what they are doing in your daily lives to help
protect our winters. Don’t forget your costumes,
there are some sweet prizes for the
best dressed.
“The day will feature all of the activities and
with the help of some wonderful sponsors,
the SROAM team will be giving out some
spectacular prizes too,” says Jones. “Last year,
COVID-19 unfortunately put a halt on the
2020 class’s race, so we are feeling very eager
to get things rolling again. Alongside the
province’s regulations, the class has ensured
that all COVID protocols are up to standard
and that participants can be confident in their
health and safety during the day.”
Participants can register and find more
information by heading to the SROAMazing
Race 2021 Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SroamazingRace)
or by emailing
SROAMazingrace2021@gmail.com.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted
our lives in countless ways. To keep each
other safe, we have had to limit activities that
are fundamental to our normal way of life,”
said Premier John Horgan. “While we are
not out of the woods yet,
there is hope on the horizon
and we are now ready to,
gradually and safely, resume
some of these activities. That
includes getting young people back on the ice
this season.”
The revised plan from the BCHL has
improved safety protocols in place including
health screening and testing, limited travel,
“pod” cities and a pre-season quarantine
plan. Protocols are also in place to limit interactions
between players, coaches and staff
from the BCHL, and the communities they
play in. The five pods will be located in Penticton,
Coquitlam, Chilliwack, Vernon and
Port Alberni.
“Sports are important for young people’s
the time away from friends and teammates
are working hard to determine how to safely
return more leagues back to the field of play
Share the love ♥
and win
Destination BC has launched the Share
Your Love for BC Contest, an engagement
and advocacy initiative for British Columbia
residents to re-ignite their pride of place,
share their love for their province, and keep
the magic of BC top of mind.
From the ability to access awe inspiring
nature at our doorstep, to experiencing
diverse cultures, our award-winning culinary
scene, and the sense of calm that comes from
the sound of a crashing coastal wave, there
are countless reasons – big and small – why
British Columbians feel grateful to call this
province home. From now until March 26,
BC residents (ages 19+) are invited to share
their own reasons why they love BC or their
community, by submitting a photo and brief
story on ShareYourLoveforBC.com, for their
chance to win one of ten prizes.
Ten residents will each win $500 in gift
cards or vouchers to spend at up to three
local businesses, within their own community,
to further support Destination BC’s Stay
Local, Support Local initiative. Winners will
be selected by random draw at the end of the
contest period (March 26) and announced on
social media. Throughout the contest, Destination
BC will also share some of the submissions
on its social media channels.
To enter the contest, or for more information
including contest rules
and regulations, please visit
ShareYourLoveforBC.com.
Since November 7, Destination
BC has paused all
marketing promoting travel
in BC, to help support the
Provincial Health Officer’s
recommendation against all
non-essential travel into, out
of, and around the province,
until further notice. During
that time, efforts have shifted
to encouraging BC residents
to follow the current guidelines,
stay in their own communities,
and support local
businesses.
pandemic, while successfully preventing the
spread of COVID-19 on BC campuses. While
we update the guidelines to ensure on-campus
safety, I encourage students and families
to start planning for in-person instruction on
a campus of their choice in September.”
Selkirk College is currently operating 30
per cent of its educational delivery in-person,
through various programs on different campuses.
Following provincial protocols, the
college’s health and safety plan has been successfully
tested with results that provide confidence
moving forward into the next stage of
pandemic recovery.
“It has been a difficult 12 months for our
college, but students, faculty and staff have
proven their resilience as we have all continue
to work towards desired outcomes in a most
unusual year,” says Rhys Andrews, Selkirk
“Students have said to us that
the in-person element of their education
is vital. We are encouraged
that we can now prepare plans
for programs that previously had
in-person learning. This will give
new
and returning students an
experience that meshes
with the
overall
provincial
landscape in
September.”
The expected
immunization
timelines for
the COVID-
19 virus currently
project that all vulnerable and high-risk
groups should have the vaccine by spring.
The majority of the adult population in British
Columbia is expected to have access to
immunization by the start of most Selkirk
College programs in September.
Health and safety protocols will remain
the priority at Selkirk College with reducing
the opportunity for infectious contacts
a key component to revised plans. With the
safety of all who arrive on campuses the number-one
priority, what will remain in place
is the now-familiar prevention activities of
self-administered health checks, facilitating
hand cleaning through access to soap and
water, encouraging the use of hand sanitizers,
use of masks, physical distancing, early
detecting and rapid testing, and case and contact
management.
As the college moves forward in its planning
for a safe return to campus in September
2021, there will be further details on what
this means for specific programs, services and
activities provided in the coming weeks. To
continue meeting its strategic goals of access,
Selkirk College will also incorporate what has
been learned over the last year with regards
to providing delivery of programming that is
available to a wider cohort of students.
“I have been inspired by the ability of our
faculty and staff to adapt to the situation while
continuing to ensure that students are delivered
the education and training they need to
succeed after graduation,” says Andrews. “We
have learned so much about different ways to
deliver programs and new light has been shed
on how we can provide even better services
that will enable learner success. The institution
will take what it has learned over the
last year, add it to what has been proven
successful in the past, and provide an
in-person campus experience that
will be exciting for
everyone.”
Zebra mussels found
in moss balls
Anyone who has a moss ball in their aquarium
is being asked to inspect the plant for invasive
zebra mussels now that the highly invasive
species has been found in a number of locations
throughout the province.
During the past weekend, conservation
officers conducted more than 600 inspections
at retail aquatic pet and plant stores and
found zebra mussels in moss balls at multiple
locations.
Zebra mussels pose a major threat if released
into a BC waterway. The tiny mussels can wreak
havoc on aquatic ecosystems because they
multiply rapidly and are extremely difficult to
eradicate.
The Conservation Officer Service (COS) is
investigating how widespread the problem of
mussel-infested moss balls may be in the province.
The COS is working with ministry science
experts, Canadian and US counterparts, industry
retailers and distributors to help prevent any
potential spread of invasive zebra mussels. To
date, there has been no reported introduction of
live zebra mussels into BC lakes or waterways.
The moss balls, which are often sold as
marimo moss balls, are species of green algae
typically purchased for aquariums to improve
water quality. Moss balls can also be purchased
online.
Anyone who finds zebra mussels can call the
Teamwork is the fuel that makes Nelson
CARES Society’s Coldest Night of the Year
fundraising event such a success every year. The
community comes together to make up teams
of co-workers, family, friends, housemates or,
this year, Nordic skiers. Nelson Nordic Ski Club
put together a team that might have been powered
by jet fuel.
The team of seven cross-country skiers raised
more than $8,750 – but that’s not all. On Saturday,
February 20, the Nelson Nordic Ski Club
donated another $345 from day pass revenue,
bringing the total funds raised by the club to
over $9,000.
Each team member put in some serious distance.
The youngest team member, Maya Abraham,
15, skied 50km on the day with her mom,
Doris Hausleitner. Meanwhile, Richmond
skied 100km with other team members Travis
Hauck and James Crossman. Andrew Earnshaw
rounded out the group, skiing 50 km.
Each year Coldest Night of Year awards those
individual fundraisers who raise over $1000 a
coveted gold button. Well, both Richmond and
Many seed brands in stock NOW:
Shop early for best selection.
Earnshaw could be sporting 3 of these button,
each raising more than $3000 to support their
team and the work on Nelson CARES Society.
This year’s Nelson CARES Society CNOY
fundraising campaign blew the roof off the
previous fundraising numbers. This is the case
nationally, as well, with many of the 149 other
CNOY locations across the country reporting
record fundraising totals. Nelson ranked 31st
out of those 149 locations on dollars raised.
The Coldest Night of the Year fundraising
event fully funds the Nelson CARES Society’s
‘Ready For Home’ program. At the core of
‘Ready For Home’ is a full-time paid staff member
who works one-on-one with individuals to
maintain their health and housing and prevent
homelessness. This program assists Nelson
CARES tenants with life skills development,
connection to health services, employment and
income support... anything that will help these
residents stay housed in their affordable unit
and off the streets.
Nelson CARES Society preserves, maintains,
and develops safe affordable housing, but sometimes
a place to live is not enough and people
need some support to maintain that housing.
Nelson CARES Society Executive Director
Jenny Robinson says “Every year our gratitude
grows for the community support we receive
for CNOY, it is truly amazing. The funds go to
support individuals to escape homelessness and
stay housed.”
New affordable housing complex
accepting rental applications
A new affordable housing complex in
Nelson is now accepting rental applications.
The SHARE Housing complex is
nearing completion, and will offer 39
low-cost workforce housing units. The
doors for each unit will open as early as
September 1, 2021.
The SHARE Housing complex is a
partnership between the Kootenay
Christian Fellowship, SHARE Housing
Initiative Society, BC Housing, and
Columbia Basin Trust.
Founding Director and Chairperson
of SHARE Housing Board Jim Reimer
is excited to see his passion and dream
come to fruition. “In dealing with social
issues, it is not enough to say to people
“get a job, or do better in life;” they
need secure housing, proper education,
and a loving and supportive network
in their lives. We are delighted that we
“Wherever possible, we have used
Kootenay products and companies for
this project. For example, one of the
great features of the building are the
beams and panels for the complex that
come from Kalesnikoff ’s new mass timber
facility,” Reimer said.
Ken Kalesnikoff, president and CEO
of Kalesnikoff, said: “There is an obvious
need for projects like this in our
community, and we are thrilled to be
involved. We commend the Kootenay
their leadership, and their efforts to
SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a
sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each
row, column and box. Each number can appear
only once in each row, column and box. You
can fi gure out the order in which the numbers
will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you
name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Public engagement is an integral part of the Columbia Basin
Trust Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program Funding
(CIP/AAP) process. Normally, public input into the grant
awards would be received at community meetings held throughout
the Regional District of Central Kootenay every April. However,
due to the ongoing restrictions on public gatherings, the
online engagement tool will be utilized again this year to ensure
the grant process moves forward. This tool will allow the public to
provide their feedback on proposed projects for the area in which
they live.
In 2020, the online engagement tool was very successful as a
total of four thousand seven hundred and thirty (4730) entries
were received. Once the public engagement period was complete,
all feedback was shared with the adjudication committee of each
of the 20 RDCK jurisdictions (11 electoral areas and nine municipalities)
for their review and consideration. The adjudication
committees then provided their recommendations to the RDCK
Board of Directors.
Please note the online engagement tool is not a voting system,
but a way for the public to provide the feedback on projects they
feel are most important to the area they live in.
The public engagement period will be from March 29, 2021 at
8:00 am to April 9, 2021 at 4:30 pm.
To participate in the public engagement process, please visit the
RDCK website at www.rdck.ca/cip-aap on or after March 29th.
Free talk on wills and estates
Most of us don’t like to think about our eventual demise, and
yet we care about what happens after we’re gone. The Nelson Public
Library hosts a free evening dedicated to Wills and Estates presented
by Nelson lawyer Troy Trillo on Thursday, April 8, at 7pm
on Zoom. Email hgoldik@nelson.ca to register.
Troy’s talk will look at a number of common questions, including:
Do I need a Will? Can my Will be challenged if I don’t provide
for my children equally? How long can I tie up my kids’ inheritance?
Does having a blended family make a difference to my
Will? What is a Power of Attorney? Doesn’t a Power of Attorney
cover health care matters? Do I need a Representation Agreement?
There will be time set aside after the talk for additional
questions.
Troy’s practice is focused primarily on solicitor’s work, including
Wills & Estates, Corporate and Commercial, and Real Estate
law. Trillo graduated from the Faculty of Law at UBC in 1999 with
a Juris Doctor and is a partner in the law firm Connolly, Trillo &
Yates.
The Library invites people of all ages and stages of life to
come and learn about this important topic.
So you want to be in pictures?
The future of screen-based production in
the West Kootenay just got a little brighter.
Your chances of being involved in filmmaking
are now better than ever since the Civic
Theatre and Kootenay Rockies Tourism have
announced the formation of the new Kootenay
Regional Film Commission.
The new film commission will design strategies
and opportunities for economic development
through increased capacity in film
service and attraction for the region. This
collaboration will create economic benefits
for both the film and tourism industries. The
commission is supported through provincial
funding from Creative BC,and the province
also provides funding to the partners through
BC Arts Council and the Regional Destination
Marketing Organization.
The new Kootenay Regional Film Commission
will
• be the first point of contact for all
Kootenay region film-related issues and
activities,as one of the eight
regional film commissions
collaborating with the provincial
film commission at Creative BC;
• market activities for production attraction
to the region, in collaboration with
tourism strategies and activities; and
• develop regional film resources including
the locations library,crew and
supply company database, and filming
activity reporting and tracking.
The Kootenay Regional Film Commission
is a partnership between The Civic Theatreand
Kootenay Rockies Tourism. These two
organizations bring knowledge, expertise and
capacity in the fields of tourism and destination
management, economic development,
film presentation and production, community
program and service provision, and
respective local, national and international
networks in their fields. This partnership
offers full regional coverage, facilitating cohesive
communication and ease of logistics for
production across a large, low-density area of
British Columbia.
Interested applicants for the Kootenay
Film Commissioner position, may find
more information on the role and how to
apply here:https://www.civictheatre.ca/blog/
Since the official launch of The Civic Theatre’s
Kootenay Screen-Based Industry program
in 2016, there has been growing interest
from regional stakeholders to proactively
increase regional capacity to provide film
commission services, to market the region
to outside producers and production companies,
and to further develop the local Kootenay
screen-based industry.
The Civic Theatre and Kootenay Rockies
Tourism are strong partners with history
in the region as established and trusted
resources that value teamwork, inclusive
practices, and innovation. Whereas Kootenay
Rockies Tourism brings an established
and professional tourism network to leverage
marketing of the region for film, The Civic
Theatre brings a growing and recognized
local crew base network formed to provide
Throwing together a ceramics
show at Touchstones
Nelson Museum
There may be few common threads between the artists showcased
in THROWN, the latest group exhibition opening at
Touchstones Nelson Museum, but one thing they all share is a
love for ceramics.
The show, which runs March 13 to May 29, is a group exhibition
featuring a diverse cross-section of artists from across the
country, all of which offer a distinct and exemplary approach to
ceramics. Featured in the show are Samantha Dickie, an abstract
assemblage artist from Victoria, BC; John Kuroc, an artist from
Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, specializing in hand-built forms; Shary
Boyle, an artist of many mediums who explores the fantastical
potential of the human form; Jody Greenman-Barber, whose
delicate works find inspiration from dance and movement; Sergio
Raffo, a Kaslo resident of Cuban origin who works in both
human and architectural forms; Robin Dupont, a specialist in
atmospheric firing techniques and a skilled kiln-builder; and
Rory Macdonald, an artist and professor at the Nova Scotia
College of Art and Design, whose work blurs the line between
installation and intervention.
“These types of medium-centric group exhibitions create an
opportunity for a rare form of dialogue amongst the participating
artists, even in times when active mentorship and collaboration
are not possible, as the respective works speak so
strongly of perspective and means and method,” says Touchstones
Nelson Curator Arin Fay. THROWN, Fay explains, is
the second iteration of an ongoing series of medium-centric
exhibitions which was inspired by Lost Thread, a well-received
group textile show mounted in 2018 which highlighted six textile
artists from across the nation, but with a very specific focus
on regional Kootenay artists, and with “the same eye to diversity
of expression and methodology,” she adds. “This formula
of curating exhibitions gives us the opportunity to include ‘our’
artists in wide-ranging cultural and creative conversations,
within a Canadian context.”
This project is being supported through a Canada Council
grant and has partnered with Selkirk College and Medalta
in Medicine Hat. This exhibition project will support a tour
to Medalta in the Summer of 2021, a publication, and online
programming.
Fruitvale commits to 100% renewable energy
After asking all the important questions,
digging deeper into the opportunities,
and seeing their residents show
their support, the Village of Fruitvale
became the 10th West Kootenay local
government to make the commitment
to 100% renewable energy by 2050.
“I am really excited and proud that
our Fruitvale team voted unanimously
to be a part of this positive movement
to help address climate change. Fruitvale
is a very tiny place in the world,
but I know if each of us do all we can
in our area of influence, we will make
a huge difference to the health of our
ecosystems and people worldwide,” says
Mayor Steve Morissette.
The village council’s vote to support
the transition to 100% renewable
energy included direction for the community’s
next steps: to collaborate with
experts and residents to develop a plan
by June 2022 for the village’s transition.
Lynette Harper is a Fruitvale resident
who wrote letters to her village council
encouraging them to make the commitment
to 100% renewable energy and a
safer, healthier community.
“It’s so exciting to add this to the
great list of initiatives that Fruitvale has
already begun,” she says.
“I am so inspired by Fruitvale’s leadership
and perseverance. In only a few
months, the council and community of
Fruitvale came together and supported
each other in reaching this goal. Fruitvale
is setting the path forward for other
small and rural communities like theirs
to live healthier, safer and cleaner lives,”
says Natasha Edmunds, organizing
director at West Kootenay EcoSociety.
Fruitvale joins the nine West Kootenay
governments that have already
made the commitment to 100% renewable
energy and recently developed
the West Kootenay 100% Renewable
Energy Plan: Rossland, Warfield, Kaslo,
Castlegar, New Denver, Silverton, Slocan,
Oxygen celebrates National Poetry Month!
2.5” x 5”
Starting
in February
and running
through to the end of April,
Nelson’s Oxygen Art Centre
is proud to offer online poetry
classes for poets and poetry
lovers of all levels. Instructor
Rayya Liebich will help
demystify reading and writing
poetry, and to share the
“delight in language play, have
fun creating poems collaboratively,
and most importantly
discover that poetry is a gift for
everyone.” says Rayya, who is
offering three different classes:
Be Not Afeard: A Poetry Workshop
for Beginners, Tapping the
Poetic Unconscious, and April
Poetry Challenge: 30 Days, 30
Poems!
Oxygen officially kicks off
their 2021 National Poetry
Month celebrations with an
online event featuring poetry
and music to take on the dark
times Canadian are enduring.
On Wednesday March 31 at 7
pm Winlaw author Tom Wayman
and Vernon author and
musician John Lent present
“Dark Times Come Again No
More” on Zoom. R.S.V.P. to attend by
emailing info@oxygenartcentre.org.
Following this event, join Susan
Andrews Grace in Reading and
Writing Rilke throughout April. This
course will employ close reading of
Rainer Marie Rilke’s poetry as inception
for the participants’ own composition.
There will be exploration of
sound, rhythm, image, and mystery/
soul in Rilke.
“For a long while, I’ve wanted to
offer a course on Rilke that looks
very closely at the text in order to
learn more about writing,” shares
Susan. “Rilke bears close reading.
The writing in class will use the Practice
of the Outside, posited by Jack
Spicer, an American poet. In the
class we will not be workshopping
writing but rather spending all our
time on reading and writing. It will
be process-centred.”
During these difficult pandemic
times we are all missing spending
time with our friends and family, so
take an online course together! Oxygen
is now offering a 10% discount
for bringing a friend to any art class.
Alternatively, give the gift of creativity
with the new Oxygen Education
Gift Certificate.
Fellow Sportsmen & Women:
The new generation of scientists tell us the best thing we evil humans
can do is stay behind the glass, away from nature. We apparently
have no right to “manage” nature. We should close all the roads we
use to recreate on because our pick-ups, quads, bikes, and snowmobiles
will kill every critter we encounter. Even Caribou where there are
no Caribou. This is happening across BC as more and more land is
“parked”, based on the incorrect assumption that parks are “good,
roads are bad for wildlife”. Meanwhile, the species
that many of us hunt - elk, deer, moose, sheep - are
declining, while wolves, coyotes, bears [mainly grizzlies]
and cougars become more populous.
We need access to control predators. We need game
management to ensure we have healthy populations
of big game, while maintaining sufficient access to
our natural resources, which most rural families depend
on for employment.
Human impact on nature is not always positive but
neither is human interaction with nature always negative.
Active management through hunting, trapping
and harvesting timber etc. is essential. The idea that
nature will balance itself without human intervention
is absurd. Forest harvesting provides large quantities
of food for numerous species, especially when controlled
burns are used following the forest harvest.
When large areas are closed to human activities to
protect Caribou, you can be assured the Caribou will
decline like Spatsizi Park, many other National Parks,
along with the end of the Selkirk & Purcell woodland
Caribou. These areas become predator pits, wolves,
cougars Classifieds and bears love these no-go Classifieds zones. This is a
Classifieds Classifieds Classifieds
fact IF THESE AREAS WERE OPENED AND PROPERLY
MANAGED WE MAY STILL HAVE OUR CARIBOU TO-
DAY. We invite you to become a “CONSERVATION
