However, I do remember some things from
that time. Hardy’s reputation for meticulous
accuracy is well deserved, so it is with
some satisfaction that I avail myself of the
unusual opportunity to correct one of his
end-notes. He writes (p. 270) that ‘Schenk
(a Roman Catholic) and I (a non-believer)
became churchwardens of St Frideswide’s.
When the Archdeacon of Oxford … heard
of this, he had us removed.’ Although I was
brought up as a Roman Catholic, I had
become an Anglican by the time I was a
churchwarden. I also doubt whether, in the
checks and balances of the pluralist Church
of England, an archdeacon has the power
to have churchwardens removed. In any
event, the truth is more prosaic. We both
resigned after Arnold Mallinson had left the
parish, with the agreement of the retired
priest who took temporary charge of St
Frideswide.
Gifts to the Library
The Library welcomes gifts of books
from all its members, past and
present, which enhance its academic
collections and add to the pleasure of
its readers. This year the Library has
received two separate collections in
Ancient History from Professor Donna
Kurtz and Professor Janet Delaine. Dr
Stephanie Dalley notably donated an
eighteenth-century edition of Josephus
as well as other books. Books have
also been generously donated by those
whose names appear above, authors
or contributors being identified by an
asterisk.Thank you all.
