REPORTS Board Games Society by Michael Slota Two years ago, Nicola Dotti and I founded the Wolfson Board Game Society. With the funds given by the College this year, we were able to extend our collection of board games which comprises simpler and more complex games, so that players without previous knowledge can have fun, but experts will still be challenged. The collection contains strategic and role-playing games, as well as social games for larger gatherings. Games are being played regularly, and we like to think they extend the range of entertainment possibilities in College. They are a great way to meet new people and have fun together. We hosted a big event at Fresher’s Week with more than twenty people attending. It was a lot of fun and a great success in recruiting new players. Boat Club by Sophie Schauman This year the Club celebrated fifty years since our first appearance in Summer Eights, and we did it with a BANG! 2018/19 started like most years with a large intake of novices, many of whom soon found lots of fun, friends and fitness. The novice men finished the term with a win in Nephthys Regatta, and the women took second place in Christ Church Regatta. In Hilary the novice and senior squads merged to train together for Torpids. Wolfson entered more crews than any other college: five men’s crews and three women’s crews. Many members experienced bumping and getting bumped, but the bumps up outnumbered the bumps down. M4, consisting of recent alumni who wanted to row one last time, managed to bump every day and were awarded Blades. After Torpids, our sights were set on Summer Eights. Again, training meant early mornings on the river, blood, sweat and tears on the rowing machine. But training pays off, and at Summer Eights we again entered five men’s crews and three women’s. M4 (a beer boat out for fun and bumps) and M5 (a mixed crew that included three women) battled it out in the lower divisions. M4, which included many former first-crew rowers, had no problem catching the boats ahead and moved up six places. M5, on the other hand, got bumped every day and were awarded Spoons, but their spirits never faltered. Two of their members got their revenge when they joined M3, and bumped at every opportunity and were awarded Blades and the M3 Headship. W3 also succeeded in maintaining their W3 Headship, and bumped up 3 places. M2 and W2 both held their positions, both being bumped once and bumping once, with W2 also holding the W2 Headship. M1 fought hard in the top end of men’s division 1, but unfortunately went down one place. But W1 succeeded, for the first time ever in the history of the Club (both men and women), in reaching the Headship, the highest position on the river of all colleges. The fiftieth anniversary and the new Headship were celebrated at an alumni dinner on the Saturday of Summer Eights, which hosted both recent alumni and alumni from earlier years, including members of the very first (1969) crew. Our achievements owe quite as much to the commitment of previous members as to that of current members. 40 COLLEGE RECORD 2019
