Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Toolkit

2021

Welcome!

Dear Friend,

I hope this finds you doing well. What a year 2020 was, and 2021 is proving to have its own

challenges as well. As we began cancelling groups for 2020, our sadness mounted, and we

comforted ourselves with believing that 2021 would see us restored to normalcy. It appears that

was just a dream, and now we are faced with the harsh reality that 2021 will likely be much like

2020. After careful consideration, we believe that we cannot safely receive groups in 2021. Covid

cases continue to climb in Honduras with no hope of vaccines in the near future. The government

restrictions by both Honduras and the U.S. will add at least $200 to an individual’s trip cost, not to

mention the time involved in getting testing done coming and going. We also have serious

concerns for travelers getting ill with the virus in a country (Honduras) that does not have the

resources to e"ectively treat Covid. The safety of our visitors has been and continues to be a top

priority.

We hope and trust that 2022 will provide opportunities for short term teams once again. However,

the needs of the poor in Honduras are mounting and we desperately need teams. We have prayed

and contemplated how we might focus our resources to help with those needs. We are excited to

announce that in collaboration with the Edward Via School of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) we are

working towards opening a medical clinic in Santa Rosa de Copán that focuses on meeting the

medical needs of the poor in our city and region. This will by no means replace the e"ective

medical brigades in villages but will help to alleviate some of the su"ering in our city.

We are asking individuals and churches to consider donating what they would have spent on a trip

and project fees in 2021 toward the construction of this clinic. Thanks to a generous donor, we are

in the process of purchasing the warehouse we currently use in Santa Rosa for church, basketball

leagues, tutoring and our deaf school. This warehouse will be renovated to include a medical clinic

in addition to its current uses. We feel this is the best way we can extend our care and concern for

our community.

This year of 2021, in addition to donating what would have been spent on a trip, MUR wants to

equip, motivate and empower our supporters to further the mission of MUR through fundraising

on our behalf. This is our digital toolkit that we hope will help you start your peer-to-peer

fundraising. Share it with your team members and even your entire church. This is a way that even

those who don’t ever want to travel to a mission point can be a part of growing our mission.

We know that many of you have been prayerful about the people of Honduras during this past year,

and we ask that you continue to pray for them. We also hope that you will take the opportunity to

make a di"erence, even when you can’t be here to do so in a hands-on manner.

Blessings,

Phil and Donna Waldron

“Last summer, through the generosity of

my home congregation, I had the

opportunity to participate in the

DiscipleTrips short-term mission to

Honduras. When we arrived, I was fully

prepared to pour my heart out in service to

the people there. What I was not expecting

was the enormous impact that the people

left on my own life. I will forever

remember the sweet smiles on every

child’s face, the joy that came from seeing

a funny skit about the Prodigal Son, and

that, even when there is a language

barrier, laughter is a common language

that can bring people together.

I saw how much I take for granted in life—especially something like air conditioning, which I

considered a necessity. The children taught me more about being thankful and finding joy in

everything than I ever knew before. I returned home determined and worked hard to bless

someone every day.

This spring when I began receiving updates from Mission UpReach about the struggles they were

facing because of COVID-19, my heart longed to be back in Honduras. I remember looking at the

pictures I had taken there and felt compelled to help somehow. I contacted Mission UpReach about

their situation. They told me the biggest need was for food baskets. Costing just $25.00, each

basket will feed a family for two weeks. This was the moment I felt God telling me to take

initiative to do something, and I decided to call my e"ort Hope for Honduras.

I set a target goal of collecting enough funds to feed 200 families, something I never thought I

would reach, let alone exceed. It took a while to work up the courage to put my plan into action

because doing something like this was completely outside my comfort zone. I created a short video

and article to share with churches and individuals. I shared it on my personal social media

accounts and with churches I am personally connected with. Southgate Church of Christ, my

home church, was extremely supportive and willing to help the cause. Friends and family from

across the United States contacted me about this e"ort and how they could help. All these people

are supporting Mission UpReach through donations and prayers.

I prayed this fundraiser would make an impact on Mission UpReach and the people they serve. In

total, we raised enough funds to feed over 360 families! None of this would have been possible

without Him. God is good all the time! He continually shines through the smiles and laughter of

young children and through the service of organizations like Mission UpReach. I pray that God will

continually bless them and their e"orts to change lives, just as they changed mine.”

Fundraiser Ideas

If you have ever felt like you wanted to DO more, but didn’t have the financial

means to GIVE more, peer-to-peer fundraising is a great opportunity!

Bake Sale

Bake sales never go out of style. Who doesn’t

love buying treats that benefit a worthy

nonprofit organization? Expand your

participation by o"ering more healthy glutenfree

and low sugar alternative choices.

Exchange yummy treats for donations at

Honorary Fundraiser

Starting a peer-to-peer fundraiser in

someone’s honor is a powerful way to focus

your fundraising on sharing a very personal

story. These can be especially powerful if the

honoree is personally invested in the same

cause you’re supporting with your peer-to-

Creative Challenges

Virtual 5K

Grow beards, take a polar plunge, or race

rubber duckies in a pond! Be really creative

and fun with it and share, share and share on

social media to get attention for your event.

Coming up with a creative challenge can help

you get more attention during your event –

lots of people do fun runs or 5ks, so an

unusual challenge will help you stand out!

Athletic events are what most people think of

when they start thinking about peer-to-peer

fundraising. Runs are very popular events, and

you can easily sell team T-shirts to raise extra

fundraising dollars. Include a “fun walk” or

hike to include families with children.

Fundraiser Ideas

Teach or Host a Class

Teaching a yoga class or hosting a painting

night is a perfect opportunity to use your gifts

and talents to support a cause you love! If your

participants are able to create something to

take home with them, they will think of your

cause each time they look at it! Take it online

for a socially-distanced virtual option.

Dedicate Your Birthday

Use Facebook fundraisers to dedicate your

birthday to fundraising for your charity. In

lieu of gifts, ask people to donate! You could

also create a fundraiser for any special event.

Couples can set up a fundraising page where

people can go donate instead of buying

something from their wedding registry, and

they can leave their well-wishes for the couple

right on the fundraising page!

Trivia/Game Night

Golf Outing

Game and trivia nights are almost guaranteed

to reach another part of your supporter base.

Plus, they’re a surefire way to bring a touch of

competition and strategy to your fundraising

event. Whether it’s tabletop games with close

friends, or a trivia night over Zoom with a

large group, both are great ways to engage

your community in a fun night of awareness

for your cause!

Annual golf outings are a great fundraising

idea. Teams are important here; they can

work together to raise more money leading up

to the tournament and recruit other people to

participate. Bring in sponsorships to host

prizes or recognition for achievements like

“closest to the hole” and “hole in ones” to add

to the competition. Be sure you recruit a lot of

volunteers to o"er additional ra#e items

during the event.

Independent Consultant Party

There are many people that host parties as

independent consultants for companies like

Pampered Chef. You could promote the party

and donate your party earnings to Mission

UpReach. Consider hosting a virtual party!

Read-a-thon

"Thon" events are great for rallying support

and generating funds quickly. A read-a-thon

is a fun way to inspire kids to get involved.

With these events, participants collect

pledges, and then do the designated activity

for as long as possible. For a read-a-thon,

pledges could be based on each book read.

The possibilities

are endless!
