ON THE COVER9

Side Trip:

Everyone has experienced the mystery

of socks going missing in the laundry.

But I had a new one this weekend —

the padding from a sports top.

There wasn’t a lot of laundry on Saturday,

one load of darks and

one of whites. The

darks were mostly

workout clothes along

with the usual socks

and underwear and a

pair of jeans. The load

of whites was even

smaller — athletic

socks, one T-shirt and

one sweatshirt.

I was spreading out

the athletic items to

finish drying when I

realized one top was

MYRNA

missing the left side padding. It must still

be in the dryer with the socks, I thought. A

quick look and nothing turned up.

Perhaps it got left in the washer and is getting

extra clean with the load of whites.

When that load was finished, the extra

lining still had not surfaced.

Puzzled, I looked through all the other

laundry items again, checking pockets and

the insides of legs and sleeves, suspecting

static electricity for connecting two unrelated

items.

I even stuck my head inside the washer

and dryer cylinders for the wayward item.

Still nothing.

Frustrated I decided to look at the lining

that remained in the top, to know better

what I was looking for. What color was it

anyway? Black or green, like the top? Or

natural like most of the linings are?

That’s when I found the missing padding.

It hadn’t come out at all, but rather slid

from left to right, and was perfectly lined up

on the other side.

While it was nice to have that matter

cleared up, my discovery does nothing to

solve the ongoing mystery of missing socks.

Family Nature Night focuses

on water on March 26

Water is all around us and the

Dickinson County Nature

Center is hoping to inspire

families to care more about this precious

resource.

Their monthly Family Nature

Night program will feature two time

slots with one at 5 p.m. and another

at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26. The

program will focus on water with the

bilingual story, “I Know The River

Loves Me,” by Maya Christina Gonzalez.

The book will feature Spanish and

English.

“We chose this theme because we

thought it would be fun and different

to incorporate Spanish into a

Family Nature Night. It’s exciting to

learn words in other languages and I

think participants will really enjoy a

bilingual story time,” said naturalist

Ashley Hansen. “I think it’s beneficial

for children to be exposed to foreign

languages, especially at a young

age. We will also be learning about

the water cycle and it’s important to

know where our water comes from

and where it goes. Some children

may even find it surprising that water

can be stored underground!”

In addition to story time, the program

will teach the whole family

about the cycle water goes through

and there will be an opportunity to

do some painting with watercolors

and they will be playing some games.

“After the story we will go over the

water cycle and learn some Spanish

words related to where water can be

found on our planet. Participants

will play a game where they are water

droplets and get to go on an incredible

journey through the water cycle

and we will finish up with a watercolor

craft,” Hansen said.

In an effort to maintain social

distancing each family will be placed

at a table with art supplies for each

child coming with them. It will be

easy to social distance and families

won’t have to share supplies in the

interest of safety. Also, everyone age

two and up will be asked to wear a

mask. Space is limited for the event,

so people are asked to call ahead and

reserve a spot.

Hansen is exited to bring family

members together to learn about water.

“I really enjoy seeing all members

of the families work together and enjoy

a night out together. Sometimes

we see toddlers and moms at Nature

Tots and older kids from the same

family at school programs,” Hansen

said. “I love to see the toddlers and

their older sibling and mom and

dad, and maybe even grandma and

grandpa, all at one program.” F

A TIME TO

WEEP,

A TIME TO

LAUGH

Olde Towne Dinner

Theatre offers comedy

If you attend the show on stage at

Olde Towne Dinner Theatre you

are sure to exit laughing.

“Exit Laughing” by Paul Elliott is

not just the title of the show, it is also

a bit prophetic.

“There are definitely some curveballs

with this show, but with the

quick wit of the characters and the

funny situations people are just going

to laugh and laugh and laugh,”

said John Boe, the artistic director

with Olde Towne Dinner Theatre.

“Exit Laughing” is on stage now

and will continue there through

April 11.

The show’s cast numbers five and

the plot centers around someone

who isn’t there.

“The show is about

a group of ladies who

play bridge every week

and one of the ladies

passes away,” Boe said.

“They are meeting on

the first bridge night after

she passes and one

of the ladies decides to

break into the funeral

home and bring her

ashes along.”

From there the hilarity

and touching moments

ensue.

Boe think this show

is a perfect one for the

Olde Towne Dinner

Theatre.

“First and foremost,

it’s just a good show.

It’s nice when we find

a show that’s funny

and has some heart to

it. It landed right in the

sweet spot of what our

audiences really like,” Boe said.

He also knew after looking into

the show that he had actors who

would be perfect for the roles in the

play.

“I knew that we had very talented

actors in that age range that we

needed for this show and that we

could showcase their talents,” Boe

said. “For most shows, the leads are

in there 20s-40s or so, and anyone

older is more background characters,

but here they are three leads so

that is another cool thing about this

show.” F

COLORFUL

Art Center hosts All School Show

There is an explosion of color on

the walls of the Pearson Lakes

Art Center in Okoboji.

More than 300 student works of art

fill the spaces of three galleries until

April 17 for the Dickinson County

All School Show.

For Danielle Clouse Gast, visual

arts director at the art center, the show

is always a welcome sign of spring.

“The schools, teachers and kids all

anticipate it each year,” Clouse Gast

said. “This year especially since last

year we had the show up for a day

before we had to close down and everything

was virtual after that. So, it’s

really exciting to know we’re putting

this work up for the whole month

and inviting families into the art

center to see it on the wall. It really

puts a spotlight on these young artists,

the art education happening in

the county and the teachers who are

working with them. These students

are shining.”

The exhibit is broken down into

age categories including grades K-2,

3-5, middle school and high school.

Teachers can select 20 works of

art for each category. Schools represented

include Graettinger-Terril,

Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji and Spirit

Lake.

“We’re usually sitting right around

300 pieces for these shows and it has

to be really tough for the teachers to

pick with all the wonderful things

happening with their students,”

Clouse Gast said.

While the exhibit always seems to

be colorful, to Clouse Gast it seems

even more so this time around.

“There is always this

explosion of color and

I feel like this year we’re

just seeing a lot more. A

lot more rainbows, just

lots of color,” Clouse

Gast said. “And it’s bold

this year. The color use

is bold and the color

placement is confident.

I think at the beginning

of school the kids came

back ready to make

things and to create with no hesitation.”

Family, friends and the general

public will surely enjoy the colorful

creativity on display as winter finally

loosens its grip and spring slowly arrives

in the Iowa Great Lakes. F

Exhibition:

In further celebration of

Youth Art Education Month,

the art center has put together

another gallery show in the

ArtSmart area on the lower

level of the facility.

This particular show, “Childrens’

Classes Exhibition,”

highlights the work of students

produced in art classes hosted

at the art center itself.

The area has been closed to

the public during the ongoing

coronavirus pandemic, though

could be getting close to opening

once the exhibit concludes

on April 24.

“We thought it would be interesting

to use the space as a

gallery and it worked beautifully,”

Clouse Gast said. “It also creates

a kid friendly gallery space

to view kid art that is made right

here at the art center.”

Work from young students in

preschool all the way up to high

school is featured.

Chad Elliott painted a lot over the

past year.

Grounded from his typical

slate of gigs as a touring musician

due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemics,

Elliott focused more of his

attention on the canvas.

Many of the resulting works of art

are now on display through April 16

at Arts on Grand in downtown Spencer.

The gallery show, “Fleeting Light,”

features works large and small with

Elliott’s signature style taking visitors

through a bold, surreal and colorful

journey into nature as well as a

couple lively street scenes.

Time off from touring also gave Elliott

the chance to experiment in his

artwork a little bit.

“This exhibit is a good example

of a bunch of different things I’ve

explored in the painting realm this

year,” Elliott said. “Some are very

representational and some are more

abstract. Overall, the whole body of

work comes from the idea of inspiration,

being inspired and staying inspired.

It’s like catching lightning in

a bottle. That’s why I call it ‘Fleeting

Elliott was intrigued himself to see
