GUIDE

D U R I N G , A N D A F T E R A D I S A S T E R ?

Before

Identify risks and hazards in your own home and remedy them

Be aware of emergency exits in your residence

Keep a list of emergency numbers

Stay alert for emergency broadcasts

Inform yourself of the disaster plans and protocols in your

area

Inform yourself of the different safety measures per hazard

Plan a meeting place with your family in case of separation

during emergencies

Prepare an emergency kit. It must contain the following:

Biscuits and canned goods

Drinking water

First aid kit and other essential medical supplies

Sanitation supplies (such as soap, alcohol, tissue, etc.)

Cellphone or other communication devices

Portable, battery operated radio

Flashlight and extra batteries

Important personal records (such as IDs)

Money

Clothing

During

Always remember to listen to emergency alerts or alarms and

follow orders given to you in all disasters, if there are any.

For typhoons and floods

Stay updated and listen to broadcasts on the radio for status

updates

Stay inside your home unless advised to vacate by authorities

If you are staying inside:

Avoid windows and glass doors

Close all indoor doors and secure external doors

Turn off electricity and store electronics on high surfaces

if flood levels are rising

Move to higher ground and stay where you are

If you are vacating:

Equip yourself with protective gear such as raincoats and

boots

Follow routes specified by officials. Do not take shortcuts.

Do not cross in flooded areas, as you may get swept away

by rushing current or infected by water-borne diseases

Stay off bridges above fast-moving waters

If you are driving and get caught in fast-rising waters, get

out of the car immediately

For fires

If possible, try to put out the fire

Make sure to act fast

Use a fire extinguisher if available. If the fire does not go

out immediately, drop the extinguisher and evacuate.

If it is a stove fire, turn off the burner and cover the pan

with its lid until the pan is completely cool

If you have no means of extinguishing the fire, contact the

fire department and get out

Evacuate as quickly as possible to minimize exposure to the

smoke

Be sure to feel closed doors for heat to ensure that there

is no fire on the other side

If there is smoke on your current escape route, switch to

the second route

If you must exit through the smoke, stay low and crawl out

If you are surrounded by the fire and cannot get out safely,

stay in the room with the door closed

For earthquakes

If indoors:

Drop to the ground on your hands and knees, cover your

head and neck, and hold onto your shelter for sturdy

support

Face away from windows and glass doors

Stay away from glass and bricks

Protect your head and body from debris

Stay in place until shaking stops

If outdoors on foot:

Go toward open space, away from trees, buildings, walls,

and power lines

If no open space is available, head towards the nearest

shelter and take refuge there

Crouch low or lie down for balance

If outdoors and driving:

Stop your car and wait until shaking stops

Do not stop underneath overpasses and bridges

Stay below window level in your vehicle

Turn off the engine and turn on the radio for emergency

instructions and broadcasts

Stay in the vehicle if power lines have fallen on it and wait

for help

If you have to leave your vehicle, move to an open area

quickly

After

Stay posted on broadcasts for instructions from officials

Check for injuries

If minor, perform first aid

If serious, seek medical attention. Do not move the victim

unless needed.

If separated from family, head to the meeting place if it is

safe. If you do not have a meeting place, head to the nearest

evacuation center

For floods and fires: Public schools and covered courts (as

advised in Taguig)

For earthquakes: Open spaces

Check for other hazards in the area and control them

If you have evacuated, return only if officials ensure that it is

safe to do so. Make sure your home is completely risk and

damage free before returning.

Once allowed to enter your home, assess damages and repair

them immediately

Make sure to exercise caution
