The Points of Contact Between<br />

Estonian Drawn Animation<br />

and Neo-Avant-Garde<br />

The presentation examines works made in the drawn animation department<br />

of the Tallinnfilm film studio between 1973 and 1979, which<br />

employed artists influenced by western pop art and animated films<br />

like Yellow Submarine. These artists were Aili Vint, Leonhard Lapin,<br />

Sirje Lapin (Runge), Ando <strong>Rein</strong> Tammik and Priit Pärn. The case study<br />

will focus on the works “Taking Off” (1973), “Firebird” (1974), “The Tale of<br />

the Little Rabbit” (1975), “Rabbit” (1976), “Sunday” (1977) and “Vacuum<br />

Cleaner” (1978), “Is the Earth Round? ” (1977) and “And Plays Tricks”<br />

(1979).<br />

Andreas Trossek is an art historian and critic, who works as the<br />

editor-in-chief of the quarterly magazine kunst.ee. He graduated<br />

from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a bachelor’s degree in art<br />

sciences in 2003 and a master’s degree in 2007.<br />
