The Points of Contact Between
Estonian Drawn Animation
and Neo-Avant-Garde
The presentation examines works made in the drawn animation department
of the Tallinnfilm film studio between 1973 and 1979, which
employed artists influenced by western pop art and animated films
like Yellow Submarine. These artists were Aili Vint, Leonhard Lapin,
Sirje Lapin (Runge), Ando Rein Tammik and Priit Pärn. The case study
will focus on the works “Taking Off” (1973), “Firebird” (1974), “The Tale of
the Little Rabbit” (1975), “Rabbit” (1976), “Sunday” (1977) and “Vacuum
Cleaner” (1978), “Is the Earth Round? ” (1977) and “And Plays Tricks”
(1979).
Andreas Trossek is an art historian and critic, who works as the
editor-in-chief of the quarterly magazine kunst.ee. He graduated
from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a bachelor’s degree in art
sciences in 2003 and a master’s degree in 2007.
