This period marks the first films from important authors (Roze Stiebra, Ansis Bērziņš, Antanas Janauska, Zenona Šteinys, Nijole Valadkeviciute) and lays the foundation for the further development of the Baltic animation industry in the ‘<strong>90</strong>s with studios like Dauka. During this time animation techniques were being mastered and experimented with. Animation was produced in close collaboration with other arts and creators took inspiration from local literature and folklore, using the visual concepts of talented visual artists, as well as local composers’ works. It was a time when animation, like the rest of the arts during the Soviet period, often focused on political and social criticism through the use of Aesop’s language, it often delved into existential themes using the ability of animation to speak in symbols. 16

The Green Tale Original title: Zaļā Pasaka Roze Stiebra 1977 Telefilma-Rīga 14 min The film is based on Imants Ziedonis’ “Green Tale” (1973). Ecology of the human relationship with nature is an important subject in the ‘70s and ‘80s Latvia. 17
