Dear Junior Tennis Players, 

It’s very important for you to decide where tennis 

fits into your life. If you don’t know, and if you don’t 

define it, tennis can become very frustrating for you, 

and you can even develop a “dislike“ for it. 

Some players, may simply use tennis as a vehicle, 

to break out of their shyness, so they can socialize 

and meet friends. Others may take it very seriously, 

and pursue their dream of becoming the best player 

in the world. 

Some players, have absolutely no desire to become 

a professional tennis player, but just desire to get 

a scholarship, into college. The ultimate decision lies 

with you, and knowing where you want tennis to take 

you. Knowing this, will “uncomplicate“ your journey.

WOMEN’S GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONS 

The evidence speak for itself. The age of 

the women grand slam tennis champions 

is now 25 and under. 

What that says, is that junior tennis players 

(girls especially) in their teen years, are just a 

stone throw away, from being the next best 

tennis player in the world. 

This also means, that these players need to 

be very serious, and focused on perfecting 

their craft, right now! Even with the flaws 

in their games, they can still make it to the 

“big dance“. All it requires from them, is hard 

work and dedication.



THEY’RE FORCING YOU TO 

START FAST 


In todays “microwave mentality culture“, 

where everyone wants everything “right 

now“, junior tennis players, are suffering 

greatly. 

! 

Players can no longer work their way into 

matches, because it’s all systems go from 

the very first ball. That’s because the weekend 

(hurry up and let’s get everything done 

by 12:00 Sunday) format, leaves no room 

for slow starters. 

Players get either an abbreviated set (first 

to 4 games), with No-add scoring, or best 

of 3 Tie-breakers. 

These matches are over in a blink, and it 

never allows players to showcase what 

they are capable of. So most players (all the 

players who lost), leave the tournament in 

disbelief. 

Meanwhile on the pro circuit, it is possible 

for a player to lose the first set 6-0, and 

come back to win the match. Go figure!

Most junior players think that “one day“ 

they will become a professional tennis 

player. What they don’t understand, is 

that if they don’t become a professional 

player NOW, in their attitude, discipline, 

work ethic, training etc, they will never 

become that professional tennis player 

(they are dreaming of) in the future. 


Junior players (especially girls), are 

allowed to “make emotional decisions“, 

and their parents, in order to 

please them, go along with it, even 

though it hurts their tennis.

training with their friends, will help 

them. 

It becomes a social event. Even 

though parents are unhappy with 

their child progress, and the child 

is sad, and make excuses for their 

output, the child still has their way. 

The problem here is, the parent 

has a vision for their child in tennis, 

while their child has another. Players 

who are pursuing their dreams,

Stability is a very important factor 

for the growth and development of 

every junior tennis players. Unfortunately, 

some players never get the

opportunity to put down some roots. 

These parents, have wandering 

eyes, mega egos and vicarious tendencies 

where it come to tennis. 

So they jump around from coach to 

coach, and academy to academy, 

chasing after utopia. They never listen 

to reason, and believe they are 

correct. 

In the meantime their child’s game 

suffers de, because it never had 

time to develop properly, under one 

coach. Like it say “Too many cooks 

spoils the broth.“ 



“The greater the risk, the greater 

the reward“, also applies to tennis. 

If a player has been working with a 

coach for a long time, and has been

struggling and totally frustrated with 

their progress and outcomes, continuing 

to do the same things, is not 

going to help. 

The loyalty should always be to the 

player, so that they can become the 

best player they can be. The loyalty 

should never be to the coach or 

academy. 

So parent, if another coach says to 

you, I can do such and such for your 

child IN ONE WEEK, give them a 

chance, take the risk. This is about

From USA with Love

Hi, my name is Nandita Mahesh. I am 

11 years old, I was born in the USA, and 

I live in Woodbridge, Virginia. I have 

been playing tennis for more than a 

year now. 

I started playing tennis in summer 2019 

right after my dad’s trip to watch Wimbledon. 

He came back with a lot of interesting 

stories and wonderful gifts 

from the merchandise store, including 

my favorite white Wimbledon tennis 

hat. 

That’s where my tennis journey started. 

And my first tennis session (was with 

dad), one week after he came back from 

England! 





My first live tennis event as a spectator 

was the 2019 Citi Open in Washington, 

DC. 

I got to see and get autographs (on my 

favorite Wimbledon hat!) from Andy 

Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Augar-Aliassime, 

Nick Kyrgios, Marin Cilic, 

and many more. 

Tennis is an amazing sport! Since I wanted 

to get better soon, I started taking 

tennis lessons, and I have fallen in love 

with the sport more! 



Now I take tennis lessons few times a 

week with my coach at Montclair Tennis 

Club, and he is a wonderful coach! 

He has helped me with improving my 

strokes and teaching me the proper 

technique. I also play with my dad and 

another 10 year old girl couple of times 

a week. 

I hope to keep getting better at the 

sport and play competitive tennis in 

the future! Also, I want to one day go 

and watch Federer at Wimbledon, Nadal 

at the French open, and Djokovic 

at the Australian Open!

ANYONE & 

EVERYONE 


If you really want to improve quickly, don’t just 

hit with your peers. Hit with old school players 

who bring different “everything“ to the table. 

And if they are a much older player, don’t 

hit passing shot away from them. Run down 

every ball they hit, and bring it right back 

to them. That will improve your footwork and 

precision. You will soon learn that everyone 

hits the ball differently, and the more people 

you hit against, the better player you will become. 



LEARN

COMPETE 


Competing is striving to defeat or 

having superiority over something 

or someone. You often hear pro players 

saying, that they were so nervous, 

even though they just played 

an amazing match. They’ve learnt to 

compete in spite of, and defeat self 

doubt. Nerves actually helps to drive 

the competitive spirit, to demand 

more of yourself. You learn to totally 

compete against yourself, because 

it has nothing to do with the other 

person. 



During practice, your job is to run 

down every ball, and make a proper 

shot out of it. That is because in 

competition, no one knows how your 

opponent will think, or even what 

they are willing to do, in order to win 

the points. No matter what you do 

in practice, you can never duplicate 

those types of balls. Practice for/your 

impossible shots. That’s how you prepare 

for everything.

VERY IMPORTANT! 

HIT DOWN THE MID 

Hitting the ball down the middle (and 

deep), is an important strategy, for 

not opening up the court. Most junior 

players hit the ball away from their 

opponents, and that is good when 

you are dealing with slow beginner/ 

intermediate players. But when you 

are dealing with faster and advance 

levels, if you hit the balls away from 

them, they can run it down and make 

passing shot against you.
