March 2021

Dear Readers ...

As I write this it’s not known yet when

the current national and regional

lockdown restrictions will start

to ease. But I have been humbled

by the way that the Covid-19

vaccinations are being administered

across the country by the NHS and

an army of volunteers. At the last

count 1300 vaccination centres

have opened nationwide delivering

thousands of doses every day. This

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

is the biggest immunisation drive in

NHS history and I cannot help Track but Your Outdoor Exercise

admire the planning and logistics

required to make it happen. And I

thought getting 2 magazine editions

out of the door every month was

challenging!

March may be named after the

Roman god of war but as Spring

arrives, the days get longer, and

the trees burst into blossom there

are plenty of reasons to be happy.

March is the month of St David’s

Day (1 st ) International Women’s

Day (8 th ), Mother’s Day (14 th ), and

St Patrick’s Day (17 th ) as well as

many other awareness days. This

flurry of activity that March brings

is resonant of a reawakening, the

opportunity to shake off the Winter

blues and start to be more active.

After being cooped up indoors

for what seems like an eternity,

it’s great to be able to get outside

again, and it’s wonderful to feel that

first touch of warm sunshine on my

face. Exposure to sunlight brings

a much-needed boost both to our

morale and our physical health so

I for one will be making the most of

the lighter evenings to come.

Don’t forget - the clocks go forward

on the 28 th !!!

Whatever this month has in store

for you, please be safe.

Until next month ...

Knaresborough Museum and Heritage Hub

Knaresborough Museum Association are in the process of

negotiating the lease for the ground floor of the former Castle

Girl’s School in order to open a new museum and community

heritage hub. The new museum will aim to fill the current gap

in local heritage provision by telling the story of Knaresborough

focusing on social history, geology and archaeology while

ensuring space is set aside for community use where workshops

and interactive learning can take place with schools and local

groups. While work has already begun on a “Memories Project”

recording stories of local people who lived before, during and

after the war years, it is hoped too to launch an intergenerational

school project in Spring. KMA plan to work closely with Harrogate Museum service to create a new

cultural quarter in the Castle precinct boosting provision for visitors and the local economy.

KMA are in the process of trying to raise £40,000 to refurbish and equip the school building and

create a new wheelchair accessible entrance. A crowdfunder was launched in January (www.

crowdfunder.co.uk/help-us-make-a-new-museum-for-knaresborough) and to date has raised

nearly £8000 and other donations from Sir Graham Hall, Knaresborough Relief in Need and other

sources have raised more than £8000. To reach their target KMA Chair Kathy Allday said “We

are writing to local businesses and charitable trusts for donations and one way or another we are

optimistic we will get there. We are really grateful to the dozens of people who have donated so far

and to the many people who have offered to help in other ways”.

Local illustrator Caroline Miekina has drawn up visuals of some of the displays

and exhibitions KMA are hoping to have in the museum. They include a

reconstruction of the Trinitarian Priory and an immersive installation showing

the evolution of the gorge over millions of years to the present day and a

WW2 themed display with sound pods and featuring locals Ginger Lacey and

Winifred Jacob Smith.

Theatre For 1 Pound

Victoria Smith launched #theatrefor1pound

to help the Arts, in particular Northern Ballet

and Leeds Playhouse, following the Covid19

pandemic. Victoria’s daughter, Izzy, is a student

of The Academy of Northern Ballet and knows

first hand how badly hit the theatres have been

affected by the covid closures.

The idea behind #theatrefor1pound is that

most people are able to spare £1, even in these

financially astute times, but collectively, all these

£1s add up. Together, they can make a huge

difference to this theatre and ballet academy and

other theatres too.

Theatre is an instrumental part of life that has

been here for hundreds of years and needs to be

allowed to thrive and lovingly preserved.

With any performance it’s not just the dancers

that have been impacted by this situation but:

musicians; costume/set designers; special

effects; makeup;writers;

choreographers;

physiotherapists; conductors;

actors; photographers;

advertising; box office staff;

front of house; lighting

engineers and the driver of the

The list seems endless!

Live performers present different genres to

live audiences which is only experienced in the

theatre. Whatever you see or listen to at the

theatre, audiences use all their senses. It’s

an escape, can make you think and opens up

discussions whether it’s a serious piece of work

or a fun pantomime. It is thought provoking and

can only be experienced in these special, unique

venues.

Theatre gives you a “healthy feel good “ feeling!

It’s not just a job in The Arts it is a special gift

to be able to perform to an audience, it’s part of

your soul. It’s a big team that is involved not just

the people you see on stage.

The picture and logo of #theatrefor1pound is

of Izzy dancing in the sea while on holiday in

ARIES (Mar 20 th - Apr 19 th ) :

February’s mood of mental lethargy

carries on into March and there’s not a

lot of enthusiasm with you for anything.

This could cause some tension in

relationships, especially if partners are suggesting

you do “this”, “that” or “the other” without showing

any inclination to do anything themselves. You may as

well glue yourself to the TV set or retreat to the shed!

TAURUS (Apr 20 th - May 21 st ): Given

the circumstances, it’s quite natural

that you should be feeling a bit hemmed

in and claustrophobic but March is a

challenging month and you need to find

some more mental energy from somewhere. Also,

you need to avoid any kind of conflict or argument

because it won’t be too difficult for someone to light

the blue touch paper and then be totally surprised

when you explode. Hug a tree or take up Yoga!

GEMINI (May 22 nd - Jun 21 st ) :

Life goes on, albeit slowly – which is a

problem because you feel like running

when circumstances dictate that you

must walk. Family and friends will be

sympathetic and you’ll take some solace in knowing

that they’re feeling just the same as you. Oddly, this

could be seen as a time of great learning, either on

an academic level, or learning more about yourself.

CANCER (Jun 22 nd - Jul 23 rd ) : A

fractious month as you deal with other

peoples’ moans and groans, complaints

and problems. On the plus side, it

distracts you from some of your own

issues and provides you with an excuse for not

doing a few things that you weren’t sure were the

right things to do anyway. Some romantic overtures

during the last days of the month ... but frankly I

don’t think you’ll be too interested anyway.

LEO (Jul 24 th - Aug 23 rd ) : An expensive

month because you’re in the mood to

spend money on stuff you don’t really

need – but you want it, so you’re going

to have it ... and that’s that! The words

“retail therapy” come to mind here but it goes deeper

than that. You’re rebelling, making gestures, giving

the one fingered salute to anyone or anything that

says you shouldn’t, you mustn’t, or you can’t.

VIRGO (Aug 24 th - Sep 23 rd ) : Some

spring shoots but not the sort that

grow in your garden. A hopeful mood

... and that’s fine as long as you don’t

allow “hope” to become “expectation”.

Potentially a problem brewing involving an older

female member of the family and you may be faced

with the need to make an awkward decision on their

behalf. Emotional partnerships are okay providing

you avoid arguments over money.

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

Horoscopes

LIBRA (Sep 24 th – Oct 22 nd ) : Given

the Covid situation, this is quite

a welcome and reassuring month

for many Librans: their past efforts

and endeavours are recognised,

generating greater respect and appreciation, and

their advice and opinions are likely to be listened

to with greater interest and attention. Therefore,

if the mantle of leadership is draped across your

shoulders, accept it and wear it with pride.

SCORPIO (Oct 23 rd - Nov 22 nd ) : More

so than many other members of the

Zodiac, you will be finding some fresh

perspective – and ways around – the

Covid catastrophe, and as such, this

is good month for recognising short-cuts and

not being afraid to take them. Your new found

determination may come as something of a

surprise, not just to others, but also to yourself.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 rd - Dec 22 nd ):

Look, just go with the flow and don’t

try climbing any mountains you don’t

need to climb. Let other people do the

running and be content to follow where

they lead. The worth of this strategy is proven to

you between the 15 th and 22 nd when a few things fall

into place which are guaranteed to make life easier

and a bit less complicated.

CAPRICORN (Dec 23 rd - Jan 20 th ) :

Bottom line here is that March will be a

tricky month in which you are faced with

a couple of no-win decisions. Someone

is running when they should be walking,

and it will fall to you to slow them down a bit. They

may not thank you for this but yours must be the

voice of caution and common sense if some sort of

domestic disaster is to be avoided.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21 st - Feb 18 th ): This is

a time of change and evolution in the

lives of many Aquarians. There are no

hard slaps here, just a gradual process

of one situation leading to another:

accept the inevitability of this, for it is a process,

which at the end of the day, works very much to

your advantage. It might bring a little bit more

money and it will bring more time to enjoy what

you’ve got.

PISCES (Feb 19 th - Mar 19 th ) : Do NOT go

back on choices and decisions already

made, and do NOT allow yourself to

be held to ransom by other peoples’

needs and expectations. This is a time

for breaking the ties which bind and for forging

ahead towards new targets, and whether they are

emotional targets or professional ones, this is your

time to break free from old restraints and to succeed!

Camilla Cabello : Gone For A Song

A journey into the

light for Camila

Cabello, the Cuban

star who wants to

use her talent and

her influence wisely

by Richard Adhous

“Silvia Elizabeth Pangaro/Shutterstock.com”

For someone so young, Camila Cabello

has done so much. Still only 23, the

former X Factor star, who got her big

break on the reality show when she was

pitched into girl group Fifth Harmony,

is close to celebrating a decade in the

camera lens.

Indeed, it was 2012 that the Havanaborn

singer first leapt to the attention

of Simon Cowell and the music industry

elite, who quickly saw their faith repaid

“Featureflash Photo Agency/Shutterstock.com”

14

as the group scored a collection

of chart hits on both sides of the

Atlantic.

Relatively quickly, however, it

was clear the Florida-raised star

was the standout performer in

the quintet. “It was never the

case that I was looking for a solo

career as early as it came along,”

she says. “Simply, things move so

fast when you are in the throes of

making music and travelling around the

world, and it’s very easy to keep moving

fast with it, making big decisions that

perhaps you wouldn’t

usually make in such a hurry; but even

so, I have no regrets.”

In the case of turning solo, it was a

great move – Cabello has flourished

as her own person, utilising her own

unique sound.

Still, even now, at a point in her career

that offers so many avenues that she

may pursue, the artist has experience,

respect of her peers and, perhaps

most crucially, the confidence to

move forward with an image that is

undoubtedly hers.

“I feel as though I have been through

enough dark times to now be able to

deal with whatever is thrown my way,”

she says. “That might be complications

over records I am making, it may be

frustrations over touring, or perhaps it’s

just reminding myself how to deal with

criticism on social media, or wherever,

but what I have learned is there is so

much light and positivity and happiness

out there; and really, making music was

all I ever really wanted to do in life!”

Perhaps it’s fitting, given her place of

birth, that the sultry, traditional Latino

sounds of biggest hit Havana are what

defines the artist best. That’s despite

a range of musical influences that

includes Michael Jackson, Rihanna,

Eminem and John Mayer.

“I don’t want to be an artist who is

defined purely by influences,” she says.

“And by that I mean I want to stand on

my own two feet

as a creative

songwriter and

performer and

lead my own

way. However, I

would be lying

if I said there

weren’t a group

of artists who

have really

shaped not just

my music, but

my life and my

attitudes as well.

“Ismael Quintanilla III/Shutterstock.com”

“I feel it’s really important to know

where you come from as an artist, no

matter how far away from that you may

stray.”

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

process, before being flattened with

rather safe song choices when it comes

to releasing music.

“Having taken back a fair bit of freedom

when it comes to the music I want to

perform, I feel I can choose songs that

really do the best for me in terms of

using everything I have vocally to make

them work.”

Going forward, Cabello will want to

ensure she retains that same focus

on producing music that is original,

in demand, and true to her motives.

And yet, the distractions come from

all sides. In 2020, she was behind

a tasteful movement by artists to

raise awareness and funds for those

struggling through the Covid-19

pandemic. She has also joined other

artists in standing up against racism in

light of the BLM movement.

“Using my influence to help others

has been something I’ve always done,

but I feel it’s really important to follow

through on promises and ideas,” she

says. “We do see a lot of well-known

people standing up for an initiative just

for their own publicity, and I think that’s

a shame.

“When I commit to something I do that

because I passionately care about it,

and really want to help. And I think if

2020 taught us anything, it’s that more

people than ever around the world need

our help.”

Certainly, a more rounded pop sound

has emerged in her recent work, and it’s

a strategic, creative decision that has

Lockdown Success!

Many of you may remember Millie from Brux Hair & Beauty at Bond End. Covid hasn’t been too kindly but

she’s not one to let life get her down or hold her back! Here’s Millie’s lockdown story ...

Like many, each lockdown has made us rethink our business, rethink our income and

rethink our lifestyles. My partner Jake and I set up a new business during lockdown after

rethinking those things.

Jake is a labourer and roofer and has mostly been able to work throughout the lockdowns,

weather permitting. I, on the other hand, am a beauty therapist. I used to own Brux Hair,

Beauty & Aesthetics on Bond End in Knaresborough that sadly closed during the first

lockdown. I am still a beauty therapist working from a log cabin next to my home, but, with

each lockdown I have to shut shop and wait until the industry is allowed to reopen again.

We scratched our heads on what we could do, what did we enjoy doing, what could be done

Covid friendly and could we do something to incorporate our creative sides? I had been

making wax melts just for myself to use at home and loved creating crazy concoctions,

seeing how I was able to safely get the best strength of fragrance and the correct fragrances.

So, we decided to turn the hobby into a business and create ‘The Pampered Duchess’, we’re

loving every moment of it!

Part of our kitchen has become our workshop and our dining room had become our packing

and dispatch room. We’ve had incredible support from friends, family and clients and are

over the moon to be able to set up a company in lockdown that can operate safely. We

created The Pampered Duchess together and create everything from scratch. When Jake’s

working, I’m busy updating the website and sending out orders. Our house has turned into

a real hive of activity.

It was incredibly difficult to see the positivity in lockdown to start with on both a personal

and business level, endless phone calls, papers to be filled in and grant applications. When

we decided enough was enough, and we will remain positive, despite and incredibly difficult

year with bereavements and the salon closing. The Pampered Duchess has completely

turned things around for us and we couldn’t be more grateful! I’d strongly advice anyone

wanting to set up a business in lockdown, to do so, it’s been the best thing for us!

Always Here For You

We enjoy watching the seasons change in our private landscaped gardens

from our warm home and we’re looking forward to some sunny weather.

Every aspect of our home compliments our care, from our lovely gardens

to our luxurious bedroom suites and furnishings of the highest quality.

We have an active March planned at The Manor House Knaresborough.

To celebrate World Book Day on the 4th March, our staff will be dressing

up as characters from our favourite books and we’ll be making bookmarks.

We’ll be showing our appreciation to our ladies on Mother’s Day. There

will be flower arranging and pamper sessions, with a delicious Afternoon

Tea being served. We’ll be watching Riverdance and dressing up in green

to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday 17th March. We’re very proud to support charities, so we’ll

be holding a coffee morning for Comic Relief on Friday 19th March.

We understand that a home from home is important, so we provide a warm welcome for new residents.

Our friendly carers spend the initial settling in period getting to know our residents, ensuring that our

care is person-centred and encompasses their interests, preferences and lifestyles. From the moment

a new resident steps into our home, they can be assured that their care and wellbeing is our priority.

We take great pride in the range of high quality, seasonally focused and nutritionally balanced meals

available to residents on a daily basis. We appreciate that mealtimes are a sociable and pleasurable

part of each day. Our Sunday lunches and Fish and Chips each Friday are made freshly on site and are

especially anticipated.

We are currently offering two weeks free* for new residents joining us on

a permanent basis.

We are here to answer any questions you may have regarding our high

quality residential and residential dementia care. More information

Spring is well and truly

underway, with every

month that passes gifting

us with an extra hour of

sunshine to brighten our

days. For many, the bleak

winter weather has made

lockdown restrictions

feel unbearable, and this

year more than ever, we

are welcoming the joyful

signs of spring popping up

around Knaresborough and

Wetherby.

Re-igniting a British

love-affair for birds

and nature

Thankfully, we can observe

the colourful arrival of the

season transforming our

gardens and neighbouring

woodlands in Covidcomplaint

ways. We have

already seen snowdrops

growing beside the River

Nidd, poking their heads

above blankets of snow,

ahead of the daffodils and

bluebells that now flower

in their place. And as the

light flows slowly into the

hedgerows, we witness

once-bare branches begin

to bloom.

24

www.knaresboroughnow.co.uk

Spring Is In The Air

Representing the ultimate

freedom (at a time when

ours remains limited),

are the birds that are

noisier than ever this

time of year. Birdsong

has replaced the usual

constant hum of traffic,

making it easier to detect

when we have a nesting

bird for a neighbour. If

you spot rooks flying

here and there in early

March, it most certainly

means they are busy

building nests somewhere

for their little ones. The

Guardian reports on the

influx of new members to

grassroots bird-watching

and gardening groups

and acknowledges the

pandemic for “reigniting a

British love-affair for birds

and their song”.

It comes as no surprise

that people are finding

comfort in nature. With so

much time spent at home,

we have developed a fresh

awareness and appreciation

for our local surroundings.

Country walks have

replaced our everyday

rush to the station and a

picnic in the garden is our

substitute for a trip down

the pub.

info@knaresboroughnow.co.uk or info@wetherbynow.co.uk

The potential for life to

return to some semblance

of normality makes the

arrival of spring an even

more enticing prospect than

usual. The clocks will go

forward on the 28th of this

month and although we will

miss an hour’s sleep that

night, the extra warmth and

daylight in the evenings will

by all means make up for

this. Given how grim things

have been in recent months,

we should allow ourselves

to reflect on these simple

things. I think I can speak

for everyone when I say

that the crisis has brought

us firmly back to basics.

At the time of writing,

infection rates are falling,

and the country is well

on track to having every

person in the top nine

priority groups vaccinated

by April. We are not quite

at the end of the tunnel

yet, there are undoubtedly

some tough times ahead,

but the light is more visible

now, both literally and

figuratively, than it has ever

been.

A Maybe a little

If your irritation is
