A year of innovation exploration for net-zero in Scotland

In, 2020, Scotland’s 7 Innovation Centres joined forces with The Herald Media Group to start a year of conversation, collaboration and most of all, action, that will help Scotland reach net-zero targets. The Countdown to COP26 virtual conference held on 3 November 2020 discussed how to help Scotland to do two crucial things: • Maximise the collaboration opportunities emerging from the event • Help Scotland – and other nations – reach net-zero targets

Five essentials <strong>for</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g an <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

The most important th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

your bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Don’t try to<br />

go it alone.<br />

Get the public to buy <strong>in</strong>to your<br />

idea; it can help attract partners,<br />

funders, <strong>in</strong>vestors.<br />

Build<strong>in</strong>g a commercial demonstrator (and, later, achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial scale) is capital-<strong>in</strong>tensive. There will be dark days<br />

and many fund<strong>in</strong>g rounds, but the previous steps will help.<br />

People Partners Media Awards Fund<strong>in</strong>g<br />

If you can’t employ the<br />

people, partnerships<br />

are crucial.<br />

When strong organisations<br />

endorse you, people can<br />

believe <strong>in</strong> you.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong> Mart<strong>in</strong> Tangey, OBE (Celtic Renewables) <strong>in</strong>cluded this advice <strong>for</strong> start-ups<br />

CONSTRUCTION<br />

The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessions on this stage focused on<br />

construction. IndiNature is a start-up look<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

produce renewable <strong>in</strong>sulation and construction<br />

materials from fast-grow<strong>in</strong>g hemp, while Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Rebecca Lunn is work<strong>in</strong>g on a project to use<br />

bacteria to turn soil <strong>in</strong>to rock.<br />

Both echoed po<strong>in</strong>ts made on the Built Environment<br />

stage:<br />

• Construction impacts are tw<strong>of</strong>old: you have<br />

emissions from both construction processes<br />

(e.g. materials, transportation, construction itself),<br />

and build<strong>in</strong>g operations (e.g. energy usage).<br />

• Current reliance on cement and steel is unsusta<strong>in</strong>able.<br />

• Susta<strong>in</strong>able <strong>in</strong>dustrial processes require new<br />

l<strong>in</strong>kages across the ecosystem – <strong>in</strong> Rebecca<br />

Lunn’s case, that sees a civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with IBioIC on creat<strong>in</strong>g a bacteria supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />

THINKING POINTS AND NEXT STEPS<br />

The big picture questions aris<strong>in</strong>g on this stage were<br />

echoed across the other stages at the conference:<br />

• How do we take solutions and technologies to<br />

the large <strong>in</strong>dustrial scale, and keep manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>?<br />

• How do we help start-ups ‘bridge the <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong><br />

gap’, <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> commercialis<strong>in</strong>g research and<br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ance?<br />

the bioeconomy.<br />

IBioIC has helped the growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial biotechnology associated turnover<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> from £189 million <strong>in</strong> 2012 to £747 million <strong>in</strong> 2019, represent<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> over 170%.<br />

There’s a big opportunity <strong>for</strong> the UK to take a lead<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> a<br />

global, low-carbon civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
