NEW EARTH, NEW LIFE, NEW HOPE
Celebrating Earth Month at Conrad Manila
February 23 to May 9, 2021
By: Post-consumer Waste Artist Gilbert Calderon Angeles
As we approach this year’s Earth Day celebration, internationally aptly
themed “Restore Our Earth”, we are embracing and showcasing the
meaningful artworks of post-consumer artist, Gilbert Calderon Angeles.
Artist Angeles supports ongoing environmental advocacy to eliminate
single-use plastic sachet waste polluting our ecosystems. The goal is to find
creative ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle these plastic wastes that are
already in circulation.
A Fine Arts graduate of University of Santo Thomas, proud Bulakeño,
businessman, certified teacher and a family man, Artist Angeles found his
way back to his original passion for arts, ignited by his advocacy and sheer
desire to contribute to global action in helping restore and heal Mother
Earth. He uses single-use plastic sachet waste that is detrimental to our
environment and ecosystems. This original, unprecedented use of shredded
plastic waste in artworks is both unique and highly commendable. Artist
Angeles mixes shredded plastic with discarded and left-over acrylic he
calls “eco-paint”. Some of his canvases are also made of used wood panels
recovered from construction sites.
Artist Angeles creates attractively stunning, vibrant, and meaningful pieces
of contemporary abstract paintings — and literally turns everyday trash into
creative treasures! He is a 100% Post-Consumer Waste Artist.
Ecology, astronomy, sociology and artistry meet in this art collection of
interesting and relevant themes about Mother Earth and its surrounding
cosmic bodies, the forests, wilderness, oceans, sea creatures, animals,
flowers, as well as timely social and health issues plaguing our society.
Artist Angeles’ controlled accidents technique and distinctively organized
chaotic painting approach is eye catching to both novice and seasoned art
audiences. He encourages his audience to immerse themselves in memory
retrieval and free association as they view each artwork piece. Viewers
must exercise their own sense of control and independent interpretation to
immerse themselves in his art creations.
The unique art style and environmental advocacy platform of this artist has
caught the attention of social media, got him featured on three major local
TV networks, inspiring the global art community. Featured on Pambansang
Almusal, a National TV Morning show, he shared his efforts to save our
planet from further environmental degradation. He was on GMA 700 Club
Asia to echo the belief that we are God’s stewards on earth. As well, on
ANC’s TV Show Green Living, whose host’s remark about Artist Angeles is
worth repeating, “Only true artists can turn trash into treasure”.
NEW EARTH
Artist Gilbert Calderon Angeles believes more work need to be done in
reducing waste at the source, from cradle to grave. Industries, other plastic
producers and users must find compostable packaging alternatives. This
can only happen when consumers demand this.
Meanwhile, single-use plastics already in circulation must be inserted within
the circular economy from cradle to cradle in the product life cycle.
Through his efforts to save Mother Earth from further ecological deterioration,
Artist Angeles is promoting social and environmental awareness through his
unique art works. He wants to influence change in social behavior towards
zero waste lifestyle and eradication of single-use plastic.

NEW LIFE
Single-use plastic waste pollution is a global problem. In collaboration with
Green Antz, an eco-conscious construction company using locally collected
and shredded single-use plastics sachets used as primary raw material in
“eco-bricks,” Artist Angeles ingeniously turns these same shredded sachets
into works of art.
By increasing environmental awareness through his artworks, Artist Angeles
believes that behavioral and attitudinal changes will follow, and people
will be serious in sorting, collecting, and becoming more responsible with
disposal of their plastic garbage.
NEW HOPE
Artist Gilbert Calderon Angeles has founded GREEN ARTZ to support
ongoing environmental advocacy to eliminate single-use plastic waste
polluting our ecosystems. GREEN ARTZ is also his platform for art
enthusiasts and environmental advocates. Promoting a sustainable arts
culture is GREEN ARTZ’s small contribution to a wider global movement.
Moving forward, Artist Angeles hopes to influence artists and future artists
in using their craft and passion for the arts to protect and conserve our
environment one artwork at a time. He also believes every individual is
capable of being part of the solution by reusing, recycling and refusing
single-use plastics in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world.
“The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere
else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit,
yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we
make our stand.” - Carl Sagan
WHAT IS GREEN ARTZ?
A movement to promote awareness on sustainability through arts and a
collaborative platform for artists, arts enthusiasts, corporations, communities,
government and other organizations to create an environmentally
responsible culture and a sustainable future.
Defining Post-Consumer Waste Artist
A new breed of artists who use post-consumer wastes to create beautiful
artworks. They “turn our mess into a message” to change our existing
mindset towards a more sustainable culture.
Collection System
Collect post-consumer plastics in collaboration with Green Antz and
partners. Recover old paints, construction and demolition wastes (wooden
partitions, ply boards, formworks, used paints and others).
Preparation
Used wooden boards are converted into canvasses by community-based
carpenters and workers.
Transformation to Eco-paintings
Channeling the artist’s creativity and playing around with colors from old
paints and post-consumer plastics, these wastes are transformed into
beautiful and meaningful eco-paintings.
The following green art works are a repository of Gilbert’s inspirational
process and creative juices flowing freely in his Bulacan studio. Some of
his masterpieces are currently displayed at LAWISWIS KAWAYAN GARDEN
RESORT AND SPA located in Calumpit, Bulacan.
