CAMPUS SAFETY LEADERS<br />

North Campus: Lieutenant Terry McDonald directs the North Campus Safety Department.<br />

McDonald has worked as a Licensed Private Detective, Director of Safety and Security,<br />

Manager of Public Safety, Student Affairs Director, and a University Lecturer. He has led a<br />

group of detectives and managed a variety of criminal cases. Lt. McDonald’s educational<br />

background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice, a Master of<br />

Science in Education, emphasizing Educational Administration, and a Doctorate in Public<br />

Administration.<br />

Central Campus: Lieutenant Theodore (Ted) Hay leads the Central Campus Safety<br />

Department. Lt. Hay is a U.S. Navy veteran, having served four years aboard the nuclear<br />

aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. While deployed overseas part of his duties in the<br />

Navy included training and leading ordinance and safety teams. Lt. Hay received top honors<br />

in Basic Electronics, Weapons Certifications, and Nuclear Certifications and maintained<br />

Top Secret <strong>security</strong> clearance. He comes to Broward College with 16 years of management<br />

experience in multiple fields. Additionally, he has certifications from FEMA (Federal<br />

Emergency Management Agency), CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental<br />

Design), NST (National Seminars Training) for training and coaching, IACLEA (International<br />

Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators) courses and is an OC (pepper<br />

spray) instructor.<br />

South Campus: Lieutenant Daniel L. Hall, Jr. is the Director of Campus Safety and currently<br />

leads the campus safety operations on South Campus and the Partnership Centers. A native<br />

of Miami-Dade County, Lt. Hall has over 13 years of public safety experience in South Florida.<br />

He served as a Correctional Officer for the Florida Department of Corrections and during<br />

his time in private <strong>security</strong>, Lt. Hall served as a <strong>security</strong> manager. Lt. Hall joined Broward<br />

College in November <strong>20</strong>16. While serving as a Campus Safety Sergeant, he supervised and<br />

managed at multiply campuses over his time. Lt. Hall also served as the Crime Prevention/<br />

Community Engagement Sergeant for the DSSEP, where he was instrumental in offering<br />

over 100 crime prevention and community outreach programs to students, faculty, and staff.<br />

Lt. Hall continuously displays a high degree of integrity, responsibility, and commitment to<br />

the DSSEP mission of keeping Broward College safe.<br />

Willis Holcombe Center: Sergeant Mario Alvarado joined Broward College in February<br />

of <strong>20</strong>16. Sgt. Alvarado brings to the Broward College Campus Safety Department 23 years<br />

of managing experience in the public safety field. Sgt. Alvarado’s work experience includes<br />

managing a <strong>security</strong> company for 15 years, with over 500 <strong>security</strong> officers and staff. In <strong>20</strong>09,<br />

Sgt. Alvarado began his second journey in becoming the head of <strong>security</strong> for Vista BMW,<br />

where he supervised 30 <strong>security</strong> officers for nine years before joining Broward College. Sgt.<br />

Alvarado is currently working on his BAS degree in Office Management and looking forward<br />

to graduating from Broward College in December <strong>20</strong><strong>21</strong>.<br />

Partnership Centers: Sergeant Sonja D. Johnson has been working in the public safety<br />

field for 19 years, 18 of those years in the Broward College Campus Safety Department. Sgt.<br />

Johnson joined Broward College in <strong>20</strong>01 as a Campus Safety Officer and was promoted<br />

to Campus Safety Sergeant in <strong>20</strong>04. During her career at Broward College, Sgt. Johnson<br />

served as the interim Lieutenant at South Campus in <strong>20</strong>10. Sgt. Johnson also served three<br />

years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve and received an Honorable Discharge.<br />
