One lake –many faces:
sometimes gentle, sometimes
brisk. Waves, wind and fun.
Thelake
entirety
Ourlake,our greattreasure!
Averitable pearl in ourcrown:nestled
Lake Kaltern andits irresistible
sirencall: whowould even thinkabout
it’s afriendlylake. Alakewith
asoftspotfor people,flora, andfauna,
to be used as alivingspace,playground,and
caring:the southern shorebelongs
to thefloraand fauna, thenorthern
shoretothe lake-goers,while the
waterbelongs to everyone. Andthat
nearly all-year round. It canalsobe
enchanting during winter,whenthe
The lakeisalways there. Even if youcan’t see
it right now. Youhaveafeeling it’s there, you
feel it. It makes air lighter, itsparkles through
thecoverofthe forest, itcalls to us. It isn’t
big, nor is it deep. What an advantage! Lake
Kalternwarms up already in spring to pleasant
bathing temperatures and maintains them
well into autumn.
Soft water,
pleasant air –pure
swimming experience.
Enjoying the good life atthe beach café.
Lake Kaltern and the swimming pool Lido.
Enjoying the lake and some ‘me time’.
Thereare four swimming infrastructures to
satisfy thedemands of all shore-goers and
one of them, theLido, has been awarded an
architectural prize and features awhirlpool,
an underground cave,akiosk,and thelawn
forsunbathing, forpeace and quiet, fun, and
people-watching. And obviouslyyou can hire
pedal-boats, rowing boats, and surfequipment.
The sailing club is just ahop, skip, and
jumpaway,and thelake’sneighbours also
partake in thefun, withbirds swooping above
youand theother lake’sinhabitants dozing in
Then it’s time to head backtothe shoreby
circling thelake. Youcan walk,run, cycle,
and even push thepram–you won’tregretit.
Youcan find virtually
everything, and we
mean it, that makes
us who we aresurrounding
LAKE POOLS &LIDO —Onthe northern shore ofthe lake
there are four public pools with affiliated restaurants and
BIOTOPE —250 bird species nest here throughout the year,
and around 30 dragonfly species live all-year round in the
protected area. Youcan find 14 information boards scattered
around the circular lake path packed with interesting titbits
about this area.
LEUCHTENBURG —The ruin Leuchtenburg was originally the
home of the Lords ofRottenburg and goes asfar back asthe
The meeting spot is the fountain, where
else.
Followthe church bell towers. Thereare
at least as many church towers as thereare
neighbourhoods in Kaltern. Everypartof
thevillage has at least one. And eachofthem
stands out fortheir different ‘personality’
(Just ask thepeople who livehere!). They
couldn’t be moredifferent, likeday and night:
MARKET DAY —The farmer’s market trundles into the market
well during springtime and autumn. Vegetables, fruit, eggs,
herbs, cheese, flowers, honey, juices, wine and alot more goes
onto the stalls!
THE MARKET SQUARE FOUNTAIN —The ideal meeting spot.
If only stone could talk, the stories it would tell! It once lay dry
village wears its most festive garb and offers afestive
programme and special moments.
Ahistoric path? On theone hand, it certainlyis!
This beautiful area has been home
to settlements forsome time, and exquisite
wine also growshere, fruit and vegetables
it isn’t that historical. Allowustoexplain:
luckilyenough, theIce Agemissed Kaltern
by ahair’s breadth, as theglaciers shifted the
course of theriver to
theother side of the
valley,thus keeping
Year-long efforts around theKalterersee
wine arefinallybearing fruit:locals value
their ‘own’wine, of course, as do wine experts
from far and wide who’vehad apleasant
surprise upon sipping achalice. Asuccess
that will go down in historyfor Kalternwine.
Wine producers stand out fortheir unique
self-commitment:they’ve developed a
Kalterersee Charter containing criteria
ruling on quality, the typicality of wines,
vineyards, varieties and harvests,aswell as
cultivation methods, thelaunchofsales,
and theprocedures forawarding seals of
quality.Last year wein.kaltern celebrated its
firsttwenty year anniversary, while forthe
Kalterersee Charter it wasthe 10th one. If
that’s no reason to celebrate! Celebrations
that couldn’t be held in 2020 will be rescheduled
for2021. And of course, thewhole village
participates.
Wine production marks therythm of our life.
Whichiswhy thereare so many events on
wine: celebrations, tasting sessions, award
ceremonies. And wherethere’swine, there’s
also food. All celebrations include dishes
from local cuisine, which, likeeverything
in our area, happilycombines Alpine and
Mediterranean elements. Dumplings with
mozzarella, crunchy
‘Schüttelbrot’bread
withpasta, Speckwith
gorgonzola, farming
traditions mixed with
recipes from southern
Italy.
There isneither the village,
nor the lake –but it’s still
Kaltern: where grapes adorn
the vineyards inautumn.
“What youdoin
Kaltern isn’timportant:
wein.kaltern —wein.kaltern is an initiative standing for high
quality and traditional wine culture which are part ofthe
local industry in Kaltern. The goal is to create and secure the
rightful place inthe collective imagination of our local wine.
Youcan recognise members by the lettering ‘wein.kaltern’ or
by the ‘red point’.
THE WINE TRAIL —forms afigure of eight with acrossroads
at the winehouse PUNKT onthe market square and will lead
you across the vineyards surrounding Kaltern. You’ll discover
the historic names ofthe vineyards aswell as the diversity of
the local, thriving wine economy.
THE VINEYARDS —The Kaltern vineyards stretch between
200 and 600 maltitude. Red grape varieties, which need the
warmer temperatures, grow around Lake Kaltern, while white
grape varieties thrive athigher altitudes which favour the
development of their pleasant, fruity and fresh acidity.
