With a new exercise program being
one of the most common New
Year’s resolutions, many people are
experiencing the realities of muscle
soreness after working out. Although
sore muscles are a common ailment
in the fitness world, and some people
even enjoy the feeling because
they know it is a sign of progress, it
isn’t always comfortable to live with
sore muscles.
The first step to relieving soreness
is to know what you are feeling.
There are two types of muscle
soreness. Acute muscle soreness
happens right away and can ache
for up to 12 hours after an exercise.
It is caused by a buildup of lactic
acid in the muscles and can feel like
a burning pain. If you’ve ever had
trouble sitting down after a hard leg
day, you know what delayed-onset
muscle soreness feels like. Delayedonset
muscle soreness can last up to
72 hours and is caused by tears in
the muscle fibers and surrounding
connective tissue. When the muscle
repairs itself, it builds and strengthens
the fibers, hence the common
saying, “No pain, no gain.”
However, just because muscle soreness
can be an indicator of growing
strength, it doesn’t mean you can’t relieve
the discomfort. While you can’t
entirely avoid muscle soreness if you
are working out, it is possible to lessen
its severity and treat the soreness,
so you can recover faster and build
muscle more easily. To get relief from
sore muscles, consider the following:
• Medication. Taking an overthe-counter
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
(NSAID) pain medication
like aspirin or ibuprofen can help
relieve swelling and aches. You can
also take an acetaminophen such as
Tylenol or a naproxen such as Aleve.
If you experience sore muscles
regularly, you should avoid using
NSAIDs, as long-term use can interfere
with the muscle’s ability to repair
itself. Some people also turn to topical
analgesic heat rubs like IcyHot
or Bengay. These are counterirritants
that give the perception of pain relief
by causing the sensation of heating
and cooling the skin. While they
may make you feel better, they don’t
actually affect the muscle.
• Heat/cold. Using ice packs and
applying heat are common ways
to relieve sore muscles. To treat the
soreness immediately, you’ll want
to apply an ice pack that day to
reduce swelling in the area. Many
athletes also swear by cold therapy,
like an ice bath or cryotherapy, as
a recovery method. For the next
couple of days, apply heat to stimulate
blood flow and promote healing.
Heat can be applied through a
heating pad or a hot bath or shower.
Many people find a hot Epsom
salts bath to be both relaxing and
healing.
• Massage. For deep muscle
aches, massage can be an ideal
recovery tool. Massaging the area
that is sore releases built up lactic
acid, stimulates blood flow and reduces
swelling in the muscles. If you
can’t see a professional masseuse,
foam rolling is a popular form of
self-massage. Foam rollers come in
various sizes and densities to help
reach every part of the body. The
high-density Styrofoam uses your
own body weight to apply pressure
to the affected muscles. These offer
HOW TO ...
Relieve Sore Muscles
No Pain, No Gain ... Right?
Muscle pain is a part of working out, but
there are many ways to seek relief.
an inexpensive way to get a muchneeded
massage.
• Rest/active recovery. One of
the best ways to recover from sore
muscles is rest. Rest allows the muscles
to heal stronger than they were
before without continual tearing. For
very active individuals and athletes,
active recovery may be the best form
of rest. Active recovery involves performing
lighter workouts, so you can
continue with an exercise program
without further damaging muscles.
Active recovery can involve anything
from yoga to walking or jogging
to simply performing a different exercise,
using different muscles from
the workout that caused the initial
muscle soreness.
• Prevention. Get a head start on
recovery by reducing the severity and
frequency of sore muscles in the first
place. To help prevent muscle soreness,
drink plenty of water throughout
the day. Staying hydrated is essential
to staying healthy in general. You can
also eat anti-inflammatory foods like
tomatoes, olive oil, kale, almonds,
fatty fish, blueberries and strawberries.
Make sure you stretch before
and after a workout as well as warm
up your muscles before engaging in
any exercise. If you’re already sore,
stretching may be uncomfortable, but
it will help to keep the muscles from
stiffening up, giving relief in the long
term. Stretching and warming up before
a workout helps to limber up the
muscles and prevent damage.
It’s important to be aware of the
difference between soreness and
pain. Pushing your body too far past
its limits can result in pulled muscles,
sprains, torn ligaments and other injuries
that require prolonged rest or
more serious medical interference to
heal. If you experience acute pain
or soreness that lasts longer than 72
hours, consult a physician, as you
may have suffered an injury. ª
Finding
Confidence in Quarantine
As being in quarantine and weathering
the COVID-19 pandemic continue
to put a damper on things, American
women are turning to their makeup
routines to feel a sense of control and
comfort, according to research.
Marketing firm OnePoll asked
2,000 American women how they’re
staying positive and confident as
their time social distancing drags
on. According to the findings, 51%
said wearing makeup and changing
up their looks turned out to be small
ways to help them escape the stress
of current affairs.
If you’re feeling the need to switch
things up, you’re not alone. Read on
to discover more survey findings to inspire
ideas to help you feel your best:
• Going for natural beauty. Since
the onset of the pandemic, we’ve
seen a palpable shift in mood to a
more low-key, understated aesthetic.
After all, when video meetings and
open-air gatherings continue to define
our interactions, we may be
less focused on going for glam and
more on dressing for warmth and
casual comfort. For that reason, respondents
identified a rise in more
natural makeup looks as a key trend
of 2021.
• Leveraging makeup with benefits.
A flawless look always starts
with healthy-looking, radiant skin,
no matter how much we’re social
distancing. And that’s why, for a
majority of respondents (60%),
products that multitask get top billing.
For example, products that
contain vitamin E in the ingredients
or improve the skin’s appearance,
such as skin-smoothing or
eliminating the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles, are always a
win — quarantine or not. To help
you achieve that naturally beautiful
look, try Neutrogena makeup.
It’s “makeup fueled by skin care”
and delivers lasting makeup benefits,
packed with skin-healthy
ingredients.
• The eyes have it. For now, going
out usually means masking up,
whether we’re hanging out with
friends (while social distancing),
eating at a restaurant indoors or
outdoors, running errands or going
on a social-distancing compliant
date. Not surprisingly, nearly half
of respondents (48%) admit that
face masks have transformed their
makeup routine. That means the
eyes are now pulling focus. (Raise
your hand if you’ve attempted smiling
with your eyes, or “smizing.”)
Sixty percent say they want their
eyes to be a standout feature while
wearing a face covering. In 2021,
watch for the rise of dramatic eye
makeup to give the peepers some
serious pop.
• Ready for your screening. Being
in quarantine and staying home
doesn’t necessarily mean makeup
falls by the wayside. When it’s time
to make an appearance, say, right
before a video meeting, many found
a reason to pick up their makeup
looks. During our time indoors, mascara,
eyeliner and foundation were
the top three products respondents
found they couldn’t live without —
especially when they were due for a
video call for class or work.
• Getting a mood boost. Being in
quarantine and missing out on the
things we love doing most can be a
downer. While nearly half of respondents
(49%) admit to ditching their
normal makeup routine, just over
one-third (36%) say that wearing at
least some makeup actually gives
their mood a lift. One in four (24%)
have gone as far as trying new cosmetics,
while just over half (51%)
say that using makeup to change
up their appearance — perhaps to
compensate for the face-covering —
lets them feel a sense of control and
comfort during a stressful time.
Hobbies to Keep Your Body
and Mind Healthy and Happy
As the pandemic continues to restrict
many of the places you are
able or inclined to go, finding ways
to stay active is important for keeping
the body and mind healthy and
happy. Here are some ideas for new
hobbies to try:
• Learn a language. Bonjour!
Hola! With an array of online language
classes and tutorials available
at your fingertips, learning a
new language is more accessible
than ever. Start now while you fantasize
about a post-pandemic vacation
overseas.
• Play an instrument. Learning to
play an instrument is not only a great
distraction for the current moment, it
can provide you with years of joy
as your skill develops. Consider
starting your musical journey on a
Casiotone keyboard. By connecting
the keyboard to the free Chordana
Play app, you can easily learn to
play your favorite songs from downloaded
MIDI files. Once you’ve mastered
the instrument, the portability
of the keyboard will come in handy,
whether you play solo or join a
band.
• Become a home chef. From sushi
to soufflé to dumplings, there are
likely a range of dishes you have
never attempted making at home.
Tackle your culinary bucket list, one
by one.
• Go hiking. There is no better
hobby for staying fit and communing
with nature than hiking, which works
every muscle of the body, boosts
cardiovascular health and even improves
mood and mental well-being.
Track your hike using a wearable
tech tool geared for outdoor enthusiasts,
such as a watch from the
Casio’s Pro Trek line. Quad sensor
technology packs all the measurements
you need into one compact
hiking watch, including a compass,
altitude/barometer and temperature
measurements, along with an accelerometer
that tracks step count.
Calorie calculations use both step
count and altitude information to
take upgrades and downgrades
into consideration, and data is recorded
by the Pro Trek connected
app.
• Volunteer. At a time when many
people are struggling, consider volunteering
your time to serve those
in need. There are plenty of safe,
socially distant volunteer opportunities,
from delivering meals to the
homebound to videoconferencing
with socially isolated seniors to helping
boost adult literacy via remote
tutoring.
Amid the ongoing pandemic,
staying busy and positive may take
creativity. However, discovering
new hobbies and pursuits you love
can nurture the body, mind and
soul.
PDO threads that are so thin
and get placed under the skin
They are used to create more fullness
wrinkled areas of the face and neck.
the thread is fully absorbed and you
are left with new beautiful skin.
Are you dreaming about owning
your own home? If so, you’re not
alone. And, whatever your timeline,
it’s never too early to start planning.
Bank of America’s 2020 Homebuyer
Insights found that 89% of prospective
buyers remain motivated to buy
their first homes, and 4 in 5 consider
saving for it a priority. More than
half are either on pace or actively
accelerating their home purchase
plans. That’s not surprising, given today’s
favorable interest rates.
Despite this optimism, some challenges
remain.
“Some would-be buyers self-select
out of homeownership, assuming
they can’t afford a monthly mortgage
payment or the upfront costs,” said
AJ Barkley, a neighborhood lending
executive at Bank of America.
“Other potential buyers simply don’t
know where to start. No matter what
stage of the homebuying process you
are in, there are various solutions to
make homeownership affordable
and sustainable, such as innovative,
to help him realize the dream of
Answer the Question:
Are You Ready to Buy?
First-time homebuyers may be
holding off for the “right time,” but
there is no such thing, because
homebuying is such a personal
decision. While there is no secret
what they could afford. Begin by
asking yourself, “How much should
I borrow?” instead of, “How much
could I borrow?” This helps you focus
on the amount that comfortably fits
your budget. Then, a general rule of
thumb is to multiply your monthly income
Thinking of remodeling your home?
From safety and security to product
and contractor selection, there are
many factors to consider.
Follow these eight remodeling tips
to help minimize hassles during a
renovation:
• Create a budget. Decide on a
project budget and set a spending
limit. Whether you plan to utilize
savings, a home equity loan, line of
credit or free up funds through refinancing,
now is the time to identify
Tips for a Successful Home Renovation
be sure they have references, certification
and an understanding of the
project. For example, when tackling
window and door projects, officials
at Andersen Windows Inc. recommend
hiring an Andersen-certified
contractor to do the job. These
contractors receive product training
and installation resources, offer an
can sometimes cause delays. Build
this into the timeline so you’re not
taken by surprise.
• Address safety. Talk to your contractor
about what COVID-19 measures
they practice to help keep their
customers and employees safe. Find
out whether they’re following CDC
guidelines for businesses, including
wearing a mask, social distancing
whenever possible, and frequent
hand-washing. Also, ask if they offer
virtual consultations that allow you to
start the process contact-free.
• Add or update your security
system. With professionals frequently
coming in and out of your home,
a home renovation may be a good
time to add or update your security
system with reprogrammable smart
locks. Offering more convenience
and greater control, the Yale Assure
Lock for Andersen patio and entry
doors, for example, is a sleek, keyfree
entry lock that makes it easy to
grant access to contractors for limited
periods of time, lock and unlock
doors from anywhere, and monitor
from afar.
• Communicate openly and effectively.
If a renovation is done
correctly, you may never need to repeat
the process. This makes open
and honest communication with your
home renovation team essential. Be
sure to share your vision and to ask
questions as they arise. At the same
time, expect the professionals working
with you to communicate regularly
and address all your concerns.
• Get a return on your investment.
Prioritize projects that will potentially
raise the resale value of your home.
According to FortuneBuilders, the top
10 greatest returns on investment for
home renovations include bathroom
and kitchen remodels, landscaping,
replacing entry doors and replacing
windows. It also helps to select products
that come with transferable warranties.
This will give your property a
tangible leg-up on the market when
it’s time to sell.
(StatePoint) ª
Follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth renovation.
how you will finance the project and
how much you want to spend.
• Prepare the house. Before work
begins, clear all spaces where professionals
will be working as well
as walkways they will use to access
these areas. Remove valuables and
breakables to avoid damage, and
cover furniture in areas where paint
or dust could harm upholstery. Keep
other considerations in mind. For
example, if you’re renovating the
kitchen, you may need to create a
temporary food prep area.
• Work with reputable professionals.
When selecting a contractor,
exclusive two-year limited installation
warranty, and their expertise and
experience in an extensive range
of residential projects means they’re
able to capture your vision for your
home and work with you to provide
the right products.
Bottom line: Working with reputable
professionals makes all the
difference in the quality of the work
and the materials used to complete
the project.
• Schedule wisely. Choose a time
frame for your home renovation that
best fits your busy schedule. Keep in
mind that unforeseen circumstances
Now is the perfect time to create more
living space in your home. Whether you
need a place to take a break from daily
stressors, get some work done, or host
friends and family, look no further than
your own garage.
For many, the garage is simply a
place to park the car, store tools and
bikes, and hide old toys or off-season
items that have no other place to go.
But with a few easy upgrades, you can
turn the garage into a productive, funfilled
place. Here are five tips to get you
started:
Clean and Organize
The first step is to look at the current
state of your garage. To make the
best of your space, you’ll need to start
with a blank canvas. Do a deep-clean,
take stock of your tools, and consider
new ways to store and organize them.
Building custom shelves to get your
equipment off the floor will not only
give you a new project to take on, but
it will help clear the way for a place
where you can be productive and get
jobs done. One key item to have in your
upgraded garage shop is a portable
Add Fun & Function to Your Garage
The addition of an air compressor makes
projects in the garage easier.
electric air compressor, which can be
used for power nailers, sanders, paint
spray guns and more — plus, at less
powerful settings, it can be used to
quickly blow away dust and debris.
Heat it Up
Creating a year-round garage to enjoy
will mean you’ll have to take the extra
step to ensure the walls and ceilings are
insulated correctly. For extra warmth,
use a workshop heater like the Mr.
Heater Big Maxx Garage Heater from
Northern Tool + Equipment. A heater
this size can easily warm up a two- or
three-car garage, allowing you to work
and play comfortably in your space no
matter the outside temperature.
Let in the Light
Switching up the lighting is an easy
and inexpensive way to update your
garage. Most garages have just one or
two lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling,
but you’ll want more than that for your
new, useful space. Try an industrial-style
light fixture or customizable, sleek track
lighting to make the room feel more
inviting to friends for casual hangouts.
Plus, it’ll be easier to see when you’re
working on projects.
Bring on the Entertainment
To get the most out of your new
garage, make sure it is all about
entertainment. Think about how you’ll
be using the space. The garage is a
great place to hang a TV for football
Sundays and video games. Adding extra
speakers can provide a complete
experience, whether it’s watching the
game or listening to music while you
work on your latest project. If you plan
to host regular game nights, fill the room
with a poker or pingpong table that can
be easily folded up when not in use.
Get Comfortable
One of the most important parts of
your new garage space is seating.
Whether you go with recliners, a sofa,
stools or a combination of all three,
look for furniture that fits your space.
Find pieces that let you get comfortable,
can stand being outdoors, and are versatile.
Leather is a classic material, plus
it’s easy to clean and maintain. For another
way to add comfort — and more
entertainment possibilities — set up a
side bar with a refrigerator to keep cool
drinks and snacks at hand.
With these ideas as your playbook,
you’re ready to achieve garage greatness.
Officials of the town of Oakland
announced the opening of the
Healthy West Orange Arts and
Heritage Center at the Town of
Oakland on Fridays from 11 a.m.-3
p.m. Visitors have a chance to explore
the inaugural exhibition Est. 1887 to
rediscover Oakland’s rich history.
The center, which is located at 126
Petris Ave., is committed to preserving
the town’s past, present and future.
Visitors can see Oakland like
never before as they step into a gallery
filled with paintings, historical
photos, artifacts and more — all featuring
Oakland as its centerpiece.
The inaugural exhibit explores the
town’s history as the industrial and
social hub of Orange County more
than 130 years ago. Conceptualized
in conjunction with the Winter
Garden Heritage Foundation, it
features framed historic photographs
and content outlining Oakland’s early
history. It also features items relating
to Oakland’s incorporation in 1887,
such as minute books, the town seal
and artifacts borrowed from Oakland
Nature Preserve. A cornerstone piece
at the center is the historic Oakland
Presbyterian Church stained-glass
window. The window was made for
the second Oakland Presbyterian
Church building, a brick structure that
rose on the southeast corner of Starr
Street and Oakland Avenue in 1919.
Brooke Parker, LMHC
American Legion held its fourth annual
Challenge 22 Ruck Walk and
Suicide Prevention, benefiting Project
VetRelief, in Winter Garden. With
the help of a team of volunteers,
many of whom had no affiliation
with American Legion or its family,
the event alerted the community to
the crisis facing the veteran community
while having a ton of fun doing
it. Between 220 and 275 walkers
attended as well as an additional
150-200 people who weren’t able
to participate in the walk.
In addition to an in-person event,
Challenge 22 offered a virtual option.
And though it was the first year
attempting to do virtual, via the power
of social media, the event drew
participants from around the U.S.,
including Puerto Rico, California and
Oregon.
Challenge 22 events are fundraisers
to engage communities while
raising money and awareness to the
fact that 22 veterans per day commit
suicide due to PTSD. Project VetRelief
has been the primary beneficiary of
all fundraising from the Challenge
22 events around the state.
If interested in organizing a
Challenge 22 event, email Kurt
Gies at KurtGies@gmail.com. The
events can be anything that engages
the community to help others understand
the plight veterans are facing
from wounds suffered while serving.
The Lions came out victorious with a
score of 12-6.
The team was led by head coach
first championship. The Lions are
also grateful to first year assistant
coach Tyler Knight.
Daniel “Danny” Steele was
diagnosed with autism at age 2.
Now 22 years old, he has faced
many obstacles growing up on the
autism spectrum. Steele graduated
from Olympia High School and
the Orange County Public School
Transition program for challenged
young adults. During the three-year
program, he worked at the University
of Central Florida, The Ritz-Carlton/
JW Marriott, and Burlington retail
stores.
Six months ago, Steele approached
his parents, Nadja
Rivera and Jim Steele, with an
interest in learning golf. He previously
hadn’t shown an interest in
participating in any sport. Steele
has been receiving lessons from
Tony Keeton at Orange County
National Golf Center and Lodge.
Keeton has an autistic daughter and
Olympia High School graduate
Daniel “Danny” Steele, who lives with
autism, takes a swing at golf lessons.
has cultivated the patient ability to
communicate with and encourage
Steele.
Steele is excelling at golf, a sport
that requires fine motor skills, retention
of a large amount of information,
and patience to maintain a
positive attitude. He practices twice
a week, and his dream is to participate
in the Special Olympics Golf
Championship.
Winter Garden Business Owner Provides COVID-19 Relief
and Smiles to Children in Winter Garden
Iliana Ramos Jones, co-owner of Empire Finish Systems, has called
Winter Garden home for over 20 years. Iliana considers it an honor to
provide jobs and give back to the community that has blessed her life
so much. As a leader in the community, Iliana has directed her
organization to participate in various fundraisers, including donating
Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas gifts to local charities.
In the past few months, Iliana has partnered with the Winter Garden
Police Department by donating bicycles for children of different ages.
“It broke my heart to see so many children couped up inside due to
COVID-19. Bikes and outdoor activity are great ways for our children to
get exercise and enjoy a bit of normalcy,” Iliana said.
A challenge she faced was being able to find bicycles to purchase.
Bike riding has become so popular during the pandemic that bikes
were hard to find. The trail has been filled with more bike riders than
ever before.
Iliana Ramos Jones is running for Winter Garden Commissioner in
District 2. She told us the reason she is running is that she wants to
protect our community and keep the special feel that makes Winter Garden one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.
Iliana Ramos Jones understands the importance of family. She supports a city where children are welcome with activities to enhance
family life. Remember to vote for Winter Garden Commissioner on March 9th. For more information, visit www.jones4wg.com.
